Epistemic Interaction - tuning interfaces to provide information for AI supportAlan Dix
Paper presented at SYNERGY workshop at AVI 2024, Genoa, Italy. 3rd June 2024
https://alandix.com/academic/papers/synergy2024-epistemic/
As machine learning integrates deeper into human-computer interactions, the concept of epistemic interaction emerges, aiming to refine these interactions to enhance system adaptability. This approach encourages minor, intentional adjustments in user behaviour to enrich the data available for system learning. This paper introduces epistemic interaction within the context of human-system communication, illustrating how deliberate interaction design can improve system understanding and adaptation. Through concrete examples, we demonstrate the potential of epistemic interaction to significantly advance human-computer interaction by leveraging intuitive human communication strategies to inform system design and functionality, offering a novel pathway for enriching user-system engagements.

3. STEVEN HOLL - SAIL HYBRID Knokke-Heist, Belgium, 2005-- PROGRAM: 3 architectures: Sail-Like Planar (hotel and apartment tower) Volumetric (restored, reprogrammed casino) Porous (congress hall) CLIENT: Knokke-Heist SIZE: 232,880 sf STATUS: design phase The Belgian seaside resort town of Knokke-Heist required a renovation and transformation of their existing casino. The enhanced program intends to provide an iconic landmark and bolster the town's stature and urban spaces. The Sail Hybrid design was inspired by the René Magritte mural, The Ship Which Tells the Story to the Mermaid, commissioned for the casino in 1953. The mural inspired a hybrid transformation of the casino into three architectures: an early-modern restored volumetric architecture (white restored, reprogrammed casino), a porous-bridge Hybrid Architecture (perforated congress hall), and a sail-like Planar Architecture (glass planes - hotel and apartment tower) to create a synergy of new functions. The new three-part hybrid transformation rebuilds one of Belgium's great architect's fine works, becoming a glowing new beacon on the Atlantic wall and interconnecting the ensemble of city buildings in Knokke-Heist.
4. STEVEN HOLL – LINKED HYBRID LINKED HYBRID Beijing, China, 2003-August 2008 PROGRAM: 622 apartments, cinematheque, galleries, retail shops, 60-room hotel, kindergarten, underground parking garage; 210,000 sm CLIENT: Modern Investment Group, Beijing SIZE: 210,000 sm STATUS: construction phase Filmic urban space; around, over and through multifaceted spatial layers, are the central aims of this Hybrid Building complex sited adjacent to the center of Beijing. The aspiration of the developer Modern Group is for an ultra-modern expression of 21st Century ecological urban living. Current development in Beijing is almost entirely "object" and free standing towers. This "city within a city" envisions urban space-as well as all the activities that can support the daily life of over 2500 inhabitants. The 8 towers are linked at the 20th floor by a ring of cafes and services. Focused on the experience of the body passing through spaces, the towers are organized according to movement, timing and sequence generating random city-like relationships.
5. STEVEN HOLL - MEANDER Helsinki, Finland, 2006- - PROGRAM: 49 apartments, 500 sm rental space, garage, rooftop sauna and running track CLIENT: City of Helsinki & Senate Properties SIZE: 29,200 sf STATUS: design phase Located in Helsinki's cultural and historical (Sibelius lived nearby) district Taka-Töölö along the Taivallahti Bay, the site is enclosed by the Taivallahti Barracks, two apartment buildings and an office block. Out of the bounded inner block Steven Holl Architects' 8886 sm Meander rises in section towards the sea horizon, providing breathing space to the historic barracks and maximizing views and sunlight to the 49 apartments in the new building. The 180 meter long glass building with a height varying from two to seven floors, meanders across the rectangular courtyard like a musical score, shaping garden void spaces within the block. Meander is carried by load bearing perpendicular concrete walls, and glazed with horizontally hinged panels of intelligent glass to maximize control of light and solar gain. This glass skin of the building slightly varies in shade from transparent to opaque with thermal elements and functions like a chameleon skin. During the evenings, the building glows like an ice sculpture. The apartments, ranging from 62 sm to 222 sm, all have private saunas, balconies, and views of the sea or of Hesperia Park. Pivoting walls maximize user control on spatial variations. Among the public spaces for residents is a rooftop sauna with sea views, which opens onto a jogging track spanning the full building length.
6. Herzog & de Meuron Portsmouth FC stadium Pompey's stunning plans include 36,000 seat stadium and 750 apartments in £600m development . Designed by Olympic stadium architects Herzog & de Meuron, a new football stadium will seat 36,000 people. The Waterfront Quarter scheme will also include more than 1m sq ft of residential on a 13-acre reclaimed land site adjacent to the city’s dockyards, as well as a 1.5 acre public space.

29. CARLSBERG LEIHAKETA – INDUSTRI ERABILERA MIXTOAK, NAHASTU ETA DENSIFIKATU Over the coming years, after beer production has stopped in the area, the Carlsberg site is to be converted into a dense, vibrant, pulsating city district on a human scale, set within a framework of historical buildings and new facilities. The vision is to create a lively city district that offers a wealth of experiences, surprises and stories. It should be a city district in constant development, so that the spirit of the place will be revitalised and reinforced on an ongoing basis. Competition entrants were requested, on the basis of this vision, to submit responses to five key points, in all of which identity should be an important aspect and city life the overall goal: identity, city life, urban form, sustainability and realisation.

The frame illustrates a kind or artistic architectural laboratory developing over time. The second frame – Wheeled Tracks – uses the infrastructure to create form instead of function as intermediary spaces, and it links Carlsberg to Vesterbro both functionally and in terms of infrastructure. The third frame – Travolator – takes its starting point in the railway track area and Enghave Station and, with new programmes and connections, links the area to Copenhagen and Valby within a greater context. The fourth frame – Nature Sphere – reaches out to the Søndermarken district, creating an organically structured area with spaces for structures reserved for Carlsberg’s use of natural energy sources.

Arkitektoek, LORATEGI LINEALA deitzen diote Proiektuari.
