On Friday June, 1st. 2012 we held a small seminar on Home and Building Automation Technologies, with a particular focus on peculiarities, issues and idiosyncrasies to account when starting to integrate a new technology in Dog.
After a first introduction on the general concepts of Home and Building Automation, the seminar focuses on 3 main technologies: MyOpen, KNX and Modbus and for each of them provides a short introduction highlighting the relevant features to account when integrating such technologies in Dog. The last part of the seminar analyzes the design and implementation choices driving the integration of such technologies in Dog, with a particular focus on the abstraction process.
The seminar is the first of 2 presentations on the Home and Building Automation topic. The next seminar will be held on Wednesday June 6th, 2012, and will focus on the Dog gateway, by providing a deep architecture analysis and by proposing several development guidelines.

Matthew Hause – Paper 1: Making the Smart Grid Smarter, MBSE Driven IoT The future of IoT success, including technology advancements and revenue generating potential across the business spectrum, is dependent on the application of solid Systems Engineering and Model Based Systems Engineering (MBSE) principals. Without MBSE, the complexity involved in the design, development, and deployment of IoT systems would consume both system and operational providers. Absent of any industry standards, IoT systems cannot be built in a vacuum and their success will only be realized through application of modern day systems engineering processes, methods, and tools. The infrastructure and management will need to be established prior to, or in conjunction with, the smart systems that support them. This paper will show an Energy system and connected systems and how an MBSE and SoS approach will help guide development.

The stricter safety requirements in the rail industry – implied by the EN 50128 standard – contribute to an increasing demand for testing rail vehicles and their subsystems, especially vehicle main controllers. Hardware-in-the-Loop method, which is commonly used in automotive and aerospace domains, has proved to be functionally useful. However, such systems would usually exceed the budget of a development project in the railway industry, due to short series manufacturing and multiple vehicle variants. To deal with this problem Tritem Microsystems has designed Virtual-HIL which decreases the overall cost and increases portability of this kind of a system. In this paper, we present both the classic approach and our groundbreaking system, along with a use case from one of our recent projects together with an automated testing framework built on the top of ourVirtual HIL.

In this paper we are mostly concerned with the problem of testing electronic control units of synchronized electric power actuators. This task is particularly complex for safety critical applications, where it is crucial that the control system properly reacts in response to the faults that are hard to reproduce and verify. A cost-effective flexible and reconfigurable test platform is proposed, discussing its architecture and implementation. The proposed system facilitates the phase of definition and development of the electronic control unit, allowing the interfacing towards both hydraulic and electromechanical actuators, and having a high flexibility as regards the I/O signals. Some results, obtained during the laboratory test activity, are also presented.

DC motors are an outstanding portion of apparatus used in automotive and automation industrial applications requiring variable speed and load characteristics, due to its ease of controllability. Creating an interface control system for multi DC motor drive operations with centralized speed control, from small-scale models to large industrial applications is in much demand. By using Lab VIEW (laboratory virtual instrument engineering workbench) as the motor controller, we can control a DC motor for multiple purposes using single software environment. The aim of this paper is to propose the centralized speed control of DC motor using Lab VIEW. Here, Lab VIEW is used for simulating the motor, whereas the input armature voltage of the DC motor is controlled using a virtual Knob in Lab VIEW software. The hardware part of the system (DC motor) and the software (in personal computer) are interfaced using a data acquisition card (DAQ) -Model PCI- 6024E. The voltage and Speed response is obtained using LABVIEW software. Using this software, the speed of a group of motors can be controlled from different locations using remote telemetry. The proposed work also focuses on controlling the speed of the individual DC motor using PWM scheme (Duty cycle based Square wave generation) and DAQ. With the help of the DAQ along with Lab VIEW front panel window, the DC motor speed and directions can be changed easily in remote way. In order to test the proposed system the laboratory model for an80W DC motor group (multi drive) is developed for different angular displacements and directions of the motor. The simulation model and experimental results conforms the advantages and robustness of the proposed centralized speed control.
