MENSURATION
What is Mensuration?
• According to Meriam-Webster Dictionary, it is the
“geometry applied to the computation of magnitude
lengths, areas or volumes from given dimensions or
angles.”
• The act of measuring.
In the field of computing, we are not required to use
specific measuring tools. What we have are ”virtual”
measurements.
Computers can only understand and perform the
manipulations of 0s and 1s, which are called binary
digits.
The smallest unit of information that a computer
supports, refers to bits. These are being combined to
represent a character, number or symbol.
Computers understand machine language. Every letter, symbol,
punctuation, etc. that we write in the instructions given to the
computer, gets converted into machine language. This machine
language comprises of numbers. In order to understand the
language used by computers and other digital system it is crucial
to have a better understanding of number system.
What is a number system?
• are also called NUMERAL SYSTEM. Number system is any
notation that represents numerals or numbers.
• are the technique to represent numbers in the computer
system architecture, every value that you are saving or
getting into/from computer memory has a defined number
system.

It can be classified into its sub-types on the basis of
base of that system. Base of a number systems plays
crucial role in understanding the number system and
to convert it from one sub-type to other sub-
type. Base is also sometimes referred as radix; both
these terms have same meaning.
Number
System
 the most common number system
 the basis of how we count
 has a base or radix of 10,
 considered as the computer machine language
 the only recognizable data to the computer
 stimulates the toggle switches that a computer uses
to perform its calculations
 has a base or radix of 2
 uses only 0 and 1
 a result of simplifying the representation of
characters in programming a computer.
 grouping the binary bits into groups of three called
octets.
 has a base or radix of 8.
 spin off from the octal system
 Has a base or radix of 16
The need to input and represent different characters must be
made as the computer evolved to be an all-around computing
device. A system was introduced to translate characters to
binary digits. The idea was to assign a special decimal number
for each character (numbers, letters, punctuations and other
special characters) converting it into string of bits.
The string of bits is now what we call a byte, consisting of 8
binary bits that could represent a total of 255 characters.
These 255 characters are now mapped in an ASCII CODE
TABLE.
