7. – Abscesses : localized collections of
purulent inflammatory tissue caused by
suppuration buried in a tissue, an organ,
or a confined space
Morphologic Patterns of Acute Inflammation
SUPPURATIVE OR PURULENT INFLAMMATION
8. Suppurative inflammation. A, A subcutaneous bacterial abscess with collections
of pus. B, The abscess contains neutrophils, edema fluid, and cellular debris.
11. – A fibrinous exudate is characteristic of
inflammation in the lining of body cavities, such as
the meninges, pericardium and pleura
Morphologic Patterns of Acute Inflammation
FIBRINOUS INFLAMMATION
12. Acute inflammatory tissue
Note the vascular reaction as evidenced by the engorgement of the
capillaries and marked neutrophilic infiltration in the area
13. Eosinophils
Note the bilobed character of the nucleus and the eosinophilic
granules in the cytoplasm; seen in parasitic and allergic conditions.
14. Lymphocytes
Note the dense nucleus almost completely filling the entire cells
leaving a thin rim of basophilic cytoplasm – seen in large number
in chronic inflammation and lymphoid leukaemia.
15. PLASMA CELLS AND MACROPHAGES
Plasma cells
Round or oval shaped; eccentric nucleus with chromatin
arranged like a clock-face or cart-wheel. Cytoplasm
basophilic (Pyrinophilic).
16. GIANT CELLS
Foreign body giant cell
Nuclei scattered irregularly in
the cytoplasm.
Langhan’s giant cell
Nuclei arranged peripherally like horse-shoe
(tuberculosis) or at poles
