The document provides instructions for building a Tesla turbine using hard drive platters, threaded rod, acrylic or wood casing, and other basic materials. Tesla's bladeless turbine uses adhesion rather than aerodynamics to power itself with steam at up to 95% efficiency. The hard drive platters are layered on a threaded rod and spun, with gas entering between the disks and exiting through holes to turn the assembly. With minor modifications, the design can also be reversed to act as a pump. The turbine is surprisingly simple and efficient but remains underutilized since Tesla did not mass produce it.

This final year project presents the design, fabrication and testing of Tesla Bladeless Turbine for a 500 W hydropower system. One of the important components of Tesla turbine is the disc; its dimensions are determined from previously conducted research from Warren Rice, who mathematically modeled the flow between two co-rotating discs. Other scientists validated his results and published turbine performance plot, which can be used for further research. Using these results of the discs, the dimensions of the shaft were determined by considering a shaft under cyclic loading. Bearings were selected using analytical techniques and then the dimensions of the stator that is the outer cylinder were determined considering it as a thin walled cylinder. The nozzle slot in the outer cylinder was considered as an initial crack and stress analysis were performed to ensure safe operation. The design parameters and the processes adopted to calculate these parameters are shown in the report. Using these dimensions, a three dimensional CAD model of the turbine is generated using Solid works 2016, and modified to eliminate any problems in the shape and dimensions of individual parts. The parts were then manufactured and assembled in the innovation lab at FME GIKI. Once the assembly is completed, the turbine was tested under different working conditions, at the fluid mechanics lab of FME GIKI. In the end, the performance of the turbine was compared with that of conventional hydro-powered turbines, to see how much it can compete with the already accomplished turbines, used in the industry.

Nikola Tesla invented this bladeless turbine (patented 1913) originally, which uses boundary layer effect to run and not impingement of fluid upon the blades as in conventional. There are number of discs sequentially mounted on a shaft and the fluid is made to flow in a tangential direction with considerable pressure onto the discs with the help of an efficient nozzle, then follows a spiral path towards the centre and exits axially. The discs rotate due to the basic properties of the fluid – viscosity and adhesion, as momentum is transferred via this forces and kinetic energy of fluid is converted into the rotational energy of the shaft. Many researchers have studied this concept and given various improvements with proofs basically into two ways – one suggesting modifying the design of various components involved while others to change the parameters involved.

This integrated media series is focused on a simple thing most people take for granted: the cellular phone. This presentation isn't focused on its' strong points or its' history, however--oh no--this is all about the Anti-Cell Phone movement. More specifically, it's a brief introduction to the current lobbying efforts to ban the devices, and two entities going about it in two completely different manners. As far as the design of the slideshow is concerned, a more gray scale approach was taken, to reflect the coloring of typical phone screens (as the background is a zoomed in image of a cellular screen), but also how cold phones as a technology are. Without the texts and phone calls, they hardly catch our eye. That was the theme chosen, and hopefully you see it as fitting. Without further interruption, I leave you to your viewing.
