The Student Transitional Empowerment Program
Thanks to the Student Transitional Empowerment Program (STEP), it has been very easy transitioning
to Mason. Everyday I ask myself what I would do if I did not have STEP. Nobody understands how
much I appreciate STEP for getting me ready for college, because I did not feel like a lost puppy one
the first week of school. Without STEP I would be coming into campus with only one friend, but
thanks to STEP I came into campus with over 30 friends, which I now call family. I have people who I
can study with, grab lunch with and people who I can participate in activities with. In addition, where
would I go in between my classes? Thanks to ODIME office, I have a place to relax and study in
between my classes. However, not everything has been flowers and sun shine, because I have had
some difficulties transitioning to Mason, two in particular. One being that I have to commute over 30
minutes from my house. In high school, it would literally take me two minutes to drive, now I have to
go through a mission to get to my classes. The second thing I am having difficulties with is, how there
are no school lunches and I do not have mason money from STEP. Personally, it is difficult to pack
lunch when I get home and in the mornings because I am to tired and busy to do so at both times, so I
go without food the whole day.
This fall semester has been very different from the summer semester for me personally. One reason it
has been different, is how the class lectures go at a slower pace.

The Burmese Python Problem
Pythons, wild pigs, and red foxes are all very scary to other animals and to humans. Throughout the
years many people in the U.S have brought different invasive animals that can hurt the ecosystem they
live in and can cause a serious problem with endangered species. Invasive species came into the U.S s
eyes earlier in the day and the problem could either be getting better or worse. These animals are all
over our U.S including Texas and Florida etc. Invasive species are a problem and there are many
creative ways the problem is being addressed.
There are many different problems with invasive species. The burmese python is a danger to Florida s
National State Park. They reached the National Park by becoming pets. In the 1990 s they use to be ...

The people that own the Florida s Everglades National park hired scientists to track the snakes and
trap them and the commissioner of Florida also asks people if they see a python to report it
immediately. The Florida fish and Wildlife commission also began the python challenge. The python
challenge is a competition to find the biggest python and if you do find the biggest python you receive
a price. In Texas the wild pig is hunted down by hunters and it is killed year round. When they are
captured or killed they are sold to restaurants to be cooked and considered exotic meat. If it wasn t for
a local farmer named Marsh the sheepdog idea never would have been a solution. Marsh is a chicken
farmer and since he is a chicken farmer he has to stay up all night so the foxes will not come and eat
them. While Marsh was doing his job keeping the foxes away, he heard a dog barking. He had realized
it was a sheepdog barking at the foxes. So one day Marsh got a sheepdog and named him Ben. Ben
did a great job protecting the chickens and when Marsh heard the news of the penguins he suggested
using sheepdogs to patrol and guard the penguins. In 2006 the first sheepdog was put to the test, when
the puppy patrol started up the population rebounded to around 150. Ever since the first sheepdog
came no fox has touched one of those foxes.
There are many creative ways the of invasive species is being addressed and they are a problem. There
are many different problems with invasive species. There might be problems with invasive species,
but people are coming up with fun and different ways the problem can be addressed. Pythons, wild

if everyone thinks they are gone, they will come back every time even if it is a different

Two Standards Of Auditing
As accountants and auditors, we are held to, and must comply with, two standards of professional
conduct. Those standards are generally accepted accounting principles (GAAP) and generally
accepted auditing standards (GAAS). GAAP enforces the uniform standards for preparing and
presenting financial statements. GAAS governs the ways and means are used by public accountants
when conducting an audit. GAAS establishes the standards for field work and mandates that sufficient
evidence be found to provide reasonable assurance for issuing an audit opinion.
Liability to Clients
Please remember, as accountants we are held liable to our clients when we enter into contracts and are
hired to perform services. The liability we face can come from items such as breach of contract, fraud
and negligence. When an accountant enters into a contract, also known as an engagement, with a
client the terms of said engagement are specified. In a contract an accountant has explicit and implicit
duties. The accountant must perform all explicit duties in the contract. The implicit duties of the
contract are implied, and the accountant agrees to perform them in a proficient and professional
manner. If an accountant fails to perform the duties of the contract, he or she may be held in breach of
the contract.
An accountant may be found liable for two types of fraud. These two types are actual and
constructive. Actual fraud occurs when there is a deliberate omission or misrepresentation of a

Describe Michael s Identity In This Is It
1. Aesthetics. How do Michael s wardrobe, dance, vocal, poetic, and performative choices all point to
a particular style? What would you, as a critic, call this style, and why? As a critic, I would call
Michael s style transgressive. Michael tacitly challenged gendered, sartorial mores and wore women s
couture like Givenchy and Balmain, adding androgynous touches like his trademark ornamented glove
and cropped pants. His dance skills were similarly daring from his pioneer pop lock style to his
signature, risqué crotch grab. His performative choices blended this corporeal innovation with digital
spectacle and married with them with a mélange of sound, which distilled elements of pop, funk and
soul. Perhaps most transgressive were his vocal choices, however; a high tenor, Michael had a three
and a half octave range, according to vocal coach Seth Riggs, and he managed to connect this range in
a fluid, unprecedented way. 2. Identity. How would you describe this identity, and ... Show more

His perfectionism is displayed in the film multiple times: (1) When he corrects the band s bass level

cue that conflicts with the director s initial cue for Smooth Criminal ; and (4) when he corrects the
timing on the appearance of the bulldozer during the Earth Song rehearsal. With respect to his
humanitarian side, Michael demonstrates patience and benevolence toward his entourage and
evidences a similar goodwill in his socially conscious songwriting namely the Earth Song, which

aunt jennifer tigers Essay
Aunt Jennifer s Tigers
By Adrienne Rich
Aunt Jennifer s tigers stride across a screen
Bright topaz denizens of a world of green.
They do not fear the men beneath the tree;
They pace in sleek chivalric certainty.
Aunt Jennifer s fingers fluttering through her wool
Find even the ivory needle hard to pull.
The massive weight of uncle s wedding band
Sits heavily upon Aunt Jennifer s hand.
When Aunt is dead, her terrified hands will lie
Still ringed with ordeals she was mastered by
The tigers in the panel that she made
Will go on striding, proud and unafraid.
The first stanza sets the setting for Aunt Jennifer s dream world for her and her tigers (Aunt Jennifer

What does she intend to illustrate? How does the poem illustrate this point/s?
I believe she meant to illustrate a narrative of a woman, Aunt Jennifer, under the oppression of a male.
This is illustrated in the 2nd stanza when Rich describes Aunt Jennifer s hand as being too heavy to
pull the needle through the wool because of the massive weight of Uncle s wedding band (7, 633).
This massive weight is man s control over his wife and the wedding band is a symbol of his control.
This idea is also supported in the third stanza when Rich describes Aunt Jennifer dead being still
ringed with the ordeals she was mastered by (9 10, 633). Overall the poem illustrates oppression by
stating in the first stanza what she really desires and then describing how she is oppressed and held
back by the male in her life.
For a poem to coalesce, for a character or an action to take shape, there has to be an imaginative
transformation of reality which is no way passive...Moreover, if the imagination is to transcend and
transform experience it has to question, to challenge, to conceive of alternatives, perhaps to the very
life you are living at that moment. You have to be free to play around with the notion that day might
be night, love might be hate, nothing can be too sacred for the imagination to turn into its opposite or
to call experimentally by another name. For writing is

The Theory Of Corporate Management
Summary: (Zahraa)
Corporate management has evolved over the years becoming a complicated process even to the most
refined managers. Classical management styles can no longer be relied upon to organize efficiently the
several factors that come into play in the modern business world.
Meijer Company is no exception and therefore specialized and thoroughly researched management
methods are required to solve the ever changing corporate world. Tools that guide critical thinking in
business management are thus essential for Meijer.
Combinations of SWOT (Strength, Weakness, Opportunities, Threat) and PESTLE (Political,
Economic, Social, Technological, Legal, Environmental) analysis come in handy in the management
of Meijer Company. They were especially helpful with aligning project plans with the company vision
and mission and its core values of customer satisfaction, innovation, and teamwork.
Lewin s Force Field Analysis is important in countering opposition to change. It is also crucial in
effecting the necessary changes required in Meijer s management. The Porter s five macroeconomic
forces explain the performance of an organization regarding various market characteristics such as the
power to bargain by both suppliers and buyers.
Introduction: (Aziz)
Meijer is a family owned business that used to be a small grocery store. It was founded in 1936, and
today is considered the 19th largest privately held company in the country. They now have over 200

Core Concepts Of Quality And Associated Academic Theory
The history of quality movement can be traced back to medieval Europe (American Society for
Quality , 2016) but fundamental quality processes and practices came into effect in the early 20th
century. In the 1920 s statistical theory began to be applied effectively to quality control and by the
1950 s quality management practices were developing rapidly in Japan s manufacturing market,
becoming fully embedded in industry in Europe and the USA by the 1980 s (Department of Trade and
Industry, n.d.). But what is quality? Although there are many re occurring themes, quality means
different things to different people and there are many variations on the academic interpretation of
quality. The subject of this assignment will be to investigate the ... Show more content on

But is a little vague, this could relate to a number of characteristics for example reliability and cost
when in relation to products, or accessibility and efficiency in relation to the services sector. The
Chartered Quality Institute believes quality is about making organisations perform for their
stakeholders from improving products, services, systems and processes, to making sure that the whole
organisation is fit and effective (Chartered Quality Institute, 2016) This definition of quality is specific
and up to date with today s requirements of the application of quality. This definition demonstrates
Feigenbaum s (1961) idea that quality is from the cradle to the grave and also addresses stakeholders.
This could be the customer of a product, or client of a service for example a patient in a hospital.
Comparatively this definition of quality is more rounded than the ISO and Dictionary definitions and
encompasses the idea of satisfying the customer and constant improvement. Constant improvement
and customer satisfaction is a common theme within the principles of many philosophers of quality.
The contribution of quality innovators have made contemporary quality what it is today by developing
and deploying new frameworks and techniques. (Rose, 2005). One of the earliest pioneers of quality
was Dr. William Edwards Deming. Deming, born in 1900, was an eminent scholar and teacher in
American academia and was considered by many to be the master of continual

The Feet Of Jesus And The Earth
In order to support yourself it is more than likely that you will have to work with either your head or
your hands. Many Americans choose to work with their heads; however not all Americans were
always given a choice on how they wanted to work. Viramontes Under the Feet of Jesus and Rivera s
And the Earth Did Not Devour Him gave accurate descriptions to the types of situations many
Hispanic families used to face when trying to support a whole family while working in the fields. In
both Under the Feet of Jesus and And the Earth Did Not Devour Him, Viramontes and Rivera illustrate
how depending on physical labor jobs created additional obstacles for migrant families. In the novel
Under the Feet of Jesus , Estrella is the oldest of the children and has a larger recollection of memories
from when her family was struggling the most. Recalling the consequences of her father s departure
...every job was not enough wage, every uncertainty rested on one certainty: food. The phone was
disconnected. She remembered the moving, all night packing with trash bags left behind to a cheaper
rent they couldn t afford... (14). Viramontes displays the severity of these situations because these
memories are being recollected by a child. Even at such a young age, Estrella recognized that food
was the main priority for her family, something they needed but were not always sure they would had.
Estrella s family faced additional struggles because they were seen as immigrants and automatically

Similarities Between The Alchemist And The Curious...
Both novels, The Alchemist by Paulo Coelho and The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night time
by Mark Haddon, can be viewed as journeys of discovery to the reader. Both journeys in both novels
are a very significant part of the development of the story itself. The Alchemist is a journey of self
discovery for Santiago, the young Andalusian protagonist, which is all about him fulfilling his
Personal Legend which would strip him of all of his impurities. The Curious Incident of the Dog in the
Night time is also journey of self discovery for Christopher, the young British protagonist. Christopher
s journey of discovering himself is about him finding out that his mother has not died and she is still
alive, which he learns through his journey, he discovers a lot of new things about himself that he did
not previously know or knew he had in him.
In The Alchemist by Paulo Coelho, Santiago is a young Andalusian shepherd who is told he must go
to Egypt by a gypsy after he keeps having the same dream about a child telling him to go to the
Pyramids and find the treasure. This is the start of his journey of self discovery. The first person to tell

Essay On Collaborative Law
Ending a relationship is rarely a pleasant experience. Many people envision a divorce as being one of
the worst things they could have to endure. Splitting up property, agreeing to child custody and other
aspects of ending a marriage can be traumatic.
However, there is a simpler way. Collaborative law can settle family legal issues such as divorce,
without the need to go to court. Here is an explanation of what collaboration is and how it can be
better than a traditional divorce.
Collaboration Is Not Mediation
Frequently, collaboration and mediation are thought to mean the same thing in divorce. They are not.
Mediation is an attempt to reach a settlement agreement prior to a divorce going to trial. It may prove
successful, but the cases ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Collaborative law is a voluntary process that provides a venue to reach an amiable settlement. It
involves a binding agreement contract that both parties consent to as a way to avoid a time consuming
and costly divorce.
Why Collaborative Law Might Be Right for You
The thought of a divorce hearing can create an unparalleled level of anxiousness. Collaborative law by
its nature is designed to reduce the level of anxiety surrounding a divorce. There are three basic
reasons why using collaboration may be right for your situation.
Informal and Relaxed Setting
One of the most appealing aspects of collaborative law is that it can avoid the necessity of going to a
courtroom. While there may be a number of meetings between both parties and their legal
representation, each can take place in an informal, relaxed environment.
By avoiding the stressful litigation process, collaborative law spare families the inherent pressure of
courtroom divorce.
The Help of Outside Professionals
Unlike an official divorce proceeding, collaborative law allows outside professionals to help with the
process. They do not have to be called to testify. Each will be asked to attend a joint session to provide

You can be serious without a suit. Great just is not good enough. These ten principles are a much laid
back atmosphere, not top down, approach to the structure of a company. However, this is the way Brin
and Page want Google to be organized and works well for the company. This is a very democratic and
simple way to design a company.
The way Google has structured its management and divided the stock has put Brin and Page in a
position to which they will be able to retain most of the power of the company aside from
stockholders, whereas management will remain flat under them. The questions that the other
stockholders have about the way the company is structured will not have an effect on the future of
Google. Stockholders will have very little say in the decisions of how to run the company.
Google faces a large amount of competition in the technology industry, but with their management
style believe that they can keep the best and brightest people. This is a company believes in teamwork
and being able to keep everyone happy, not just the customers. This will enable them to keep workers
who enjoy their jobs and want to put their full effort into making Google the best company in tech.
Brin and Page are very determined to not only keep up with other companies in the industry but also
to surpass them in all areas of technology that Google competes in. However, Brin does believe that a
company tends to self destruct when they are obsessed with their competition.

Things Fall Apart by Chinua Achebe Essay
In Achebe s book, Things Fall Apart , the life of a Nigerian man named Okowkwo is depicted. At first
look, it may seem that Okowkwo s story is the main theme of the book, but upon further examination
it is easy to see that the plight of his indigenous Igbo people are the main theme representing what
really fell apart.
Achebe introduces the reader to the intricate culture of the Igbo people from the earliest chapters in
the book. He describes rituals, laws, and religion of these people with great attention to detail allowing
the reader to further understand and identify with the Igbo people on a personal level. An example of
this is the tradition of kola nut and how it is shared when welcoming someone into a home. Achebe

His punishment for this is a seven year exile for his entire family. For the reader this presents as a sign
that things are about to change and that the dynamics of the book are heading in a different direction.
At this point the reader may believe that this is the turning point in the book, but it is merely a sign of
things to come. Achebe also provides readers with another sign of things to come in the destruction of
Abame, a neighboring village located near the village of Okonkwo s exile. A white man arrived at
Abame and was later killed by the people of the Abame village who feared he would bring about the
destruction promised by the Oracle (Achebe, 1994). The destruction of the Abame village is Achebe s
first signal to readers that the people of the Igbo may never be the same. After the destruction of
Abame, missionaries arrive in Mbanta to spread the message of their Christianity bringing along with
them, the English government system (Achebe, 1994). Achebe describes the arrival in such a manner
that the reader can visualize the distinct differences between the two groups of people. The Christians
are visibly more modern with a religious foundation that is extremely different from that of the Igbo
people. They also bring with them laws that function in no way close to the Igbo culture s form of
crime and punishment. When Okonkwo hears this news he feels like

believe that everyone has one true love somewhere in the world, and spend their lives searching for
that person. Love is not difficult to find though. It exists in many forms, including love between
family members, friends, different races, and even the love for oneself, both in the novel Fried Green

Second Punic War Essay
The outcome of the second Punic War turned Rome into the single most powerful force in the western
Mediterranean. Indirectly, it also forced Rome to grow politically and militarily as it learned to deal
with acquisitions and powerful opponents beyond the Italian peninsula.
Direct Consequence of the Second Punic War (218 201)
(Morey, 1901a, Par. Battle of Zama and End of the War)
1. Carthage became a dependent state, loosing it s right to declare war without permission of Rome.
2. Carthage lost all lands in Spain, and was split up into the two Roman provinces of Hither and
Farther Spain which was then governed by a Roman praetor.
3. Carthage lost claim to all Mediterranean islands between Carthage and Italy.
4. Carthage was saddled with tribute of 200 talents payable for fifty fifty.
5. Masinissa was recognized as King of Numidia, and became a staunch ally of Rome.
6. Syracuse lost it s independence, and became a part of the Sicilian province.
Indirect Impacts of the War

The Reflection Of Music
Music is one of the most important parts of human society. It is used as an emotional outlet and allows
people to express themselves. Music is a reflection of self. Music is the relationship between tones
that normally on their own would not be too exciting, but once put together they convey emotions,
thoughts, and ideas. Music is meant to transport an individual to another world, the composer s world.
A composer will construct a story influenced by their own lives and their society. An important part of
the music is also the history behind it and how it has impacted people. Music is defined as a practical
activity, and is an art form that has always invited theoretical speculation and critical reflection. Music

Victor Frankenstein s The Monster
Nicholas Monds
Miss Sibbach
English IV
11 December, 2015
Victor... Creator or Destroyer Victor Frankenstein worried about everyone else and playing God,
rather than trying to do right, morally. Victor had to go through a lot of steps and difficulties to create
the monster. After the creation of the monster, everyone including Victor abandoned him. Victor
refused to create a girl creature to avoid a lot of problems, but he did not realize the hell the monster
would end up causing him. Victor regrets trying to play God because his action would cause him great
troubles and consequences. Victor Frankenstein had the great idea of creating a human like creature
that ultimately became bigger, stronger, and meaner than everyone around. The process and steps took
a lot longer than what Victor predicted. When the creature finally took his first breath, the two long
years of anticipation finally relieved Victor of his stress. Victor stayed up numerous nights and missed
so many meals stressing over this creature. He never gave up despite all the difficulties wanting to
become the first ever bringing life to a creature. So much has been done, exclaimed the soul of
Frankenstein more, far more, will I achieve; treading in the steps already marked, I will pioneer a new
way, explore unknown powers, and unfold to the world the deepest mysteries of creation (sparknotes).
The creature was very hideous, gigantic, and didn t look to friendly to humans. All the time and work

Love Is Only A Temporary Illusion In The Chaser By John...
The Chaser is a short story written by John Collier referring to a man named Alan attempting to
purchase a cheap love potion so a woman, Diana will love him the way he loves her. The theme of the
story is Love is only a temporary illusion. Lots of ordinary people fall in love and naively believe it
will last forever. As they are in the grasp of the illusion they will do ANYTHING to acquire a type of
control over their loved ones, but once reality finally sets in the once passionate lovers eyes are finally
opened to reality and he understands the one he is tied to is completely incompatible with him and
doesn t satisfy his expectations for the relationship.
Alan was a love sick man who desperately wanted this woman who seemed to be not so fond of him.
He doesn t want to except the fact Diana doesn t love him so Alan goes to an old man who sells him a
love potion for $1 and warns him that it is not reversible. The old man also mentions the most
expensive potion he has, the life cleaner. . In the short story, the old man states in line 16 ,I look at it
like this, please a customer with one article and he will come back when he needs another, even if it is
more costly. He will save up for it, if necessary. This quote gives the reader the idea that something is

Aging Population
To a large extent, current research and development and government policies have helped to ease the
aging process. Discuss this statement in relation to your particular field of study or interest (e.g.
economics, science, medicine, social policy, architecture, psychology, technological inventions).
Population ageing is both a triumph and a challenge (Lim, 2008). With the advances in economics and
medical development as well as better health systems, Singaporeans now are having longer life
expectancy than they used to have in the past. Current research has shown that Singapore is one of the
fastest ageing populations among Asia. However, the drop in birth rates over the past years has
resulted in a smaller ratio of younger ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The health care system within the country has been upgraded to cater to the seniors. This is to provide
a complete and affordable health care system for the elderly. These care systems or places can be
easily accessed, afforded and directed to many different needs faced by the elderly. For example,
building more hospitals so that they can be easily accessible and topping up of the Medisave accounts,
when there is a surplus, for the less well off Singaporeans as the priority (Sadasivan and Osman,
2006).
Research has shown that most seniors will want to live independently. By enabling ageing in place
(Lee, 2009), the government improves the infrastructures, such as the Housing Development Board
(HDB) buildings, and public transport system. These improvements will enable them to move around
freely and easily and they will find it easier to gain ace to public amenities with the elderly friendly
transport system.
From the researches done, it can be seen that the problem of ageing is a norm for economic developed
countries. The shift in age structure will have an effect on the country s economy. However, this
problem can be solved by having policies that benefit both the elderly as well as the country. We are
crafting new policies, improving our infrastructure and developing effective programs to enable older
citizens to lead full and happy lives (Lee, 2009). The government ensures

The Day Of Year Thou Mayst
The Speaker in That Time of Year Thou Mayst in Me Behold
We re all going to die. At the end of the game, no matter how sinful or pious, the king and the pawn
return to the same box. It is the most self evident of truths, one discovered by all people at some point
in their lives and acknowledged by every culture, every religion, and every civilization since the dawn
of time. And yet as individuals, the concept of death boggles our minds to the extent that we cannot
comprehend it in its essence: nothingness so dimensionless we can t even miss it. Death troubles us so
deeply that we lie to ourselves; we convince ourselves of our own immortality either through the idea
of eternity in heaven and God, the coming marvels of genetic engineering, our deep legacy to our
family or nation, or even just by craving our name into stone, all of which we perceive as eternal. This
way of thinking, while arguably necessary for the sake of our own sanity, helps us maintain our
delusion immortality. In the rare occasions when we do acknowledge our impermanence, it is often
through insipid catchphrases like YOLO. In stark contrast to this idea that there s always tomorrow,
Shakespeare s sonnet That Time of Year Thou Mayst in Me Behold addresses the epiphany of human
impermanence through the lens of a dying man, likely of old age or poor health, who acknowledges
his approaching conclusion and must reconcile this reality with the fact that his lover (perhaps his
wife) will long outlive him. This

Kami Is Like Shintoism
Within all religions, there is a belief in beings that live around us and can have the means to answer
certain prayers. Kami is a term used in Shintoism as spirits that live closely with human beings, which
are anything out of the ordinary, awe inspiring, mysterious, powerful, marvelous, and beyond human
control or comprehension. (Brood 318) Kami is often associated with ancestors and loved ones who
have passed on from the world of the living or even evil being who wish to do harm to those still
living. Shintoism states that many of these Kami can have the power to not only alter human events
but can also influence natural forces. Kami when applied to spirits that live in things is a way to attach
a meaning to the word, but it also applies ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Shinto has no concept of sin, but rather it teaches that evil actions can contaminate individuals by
causing them to accrue impurities that poison innocence and offend the Kami. To rid one s self of
these impurities, Shintoism prescribes ritual washings in natural phenomena like a large source of
flowing water or salt. The symbolism of water recognizes that the purification process is letting the
person previous sins and acts of uncleanliness flow out of their soul and allowing the Kami, in this
case water spirit, to carry it away. The uses of salt could be applied to purify the land before any use
such as agriculture or construction of buildings. The rituals of purification do not apply to only
individuals and groups, but to the christening of new buildings and the start of a new business or a
change in government officials. A high priest, who calls out to the Kami, performs most rituals where
large groups are involved to request the Maiden of the Descent into the Current, Maiden of the Swift
Cleaning, the lord of the Breath blowing place, and the Maiden of Swift Banishment to wash away,
gulp down, blow away, and to abolish away the sins of the group to purify their minds and souls. (The

The 17th Amendment Of The United States Constitution
The 17th Amendment The American government was created based on the principle of federalism, the
system of government that establishes a written constitution that divides the powers of government to
a federal and state level. The U.S. Federal Government consists of three branches, the Executive,
Legislative, and Judicial. It also utilizes checks and balances so these branches have equal power. The
main goal of federalism is to balance the central government with the state government, and initially
the U.S. Constitution established that the Senate shall be composed of two Senators from each State,
chosen by the Legislature (US Const. Article I, Section 3). However, in 1912 the 17th Amendment
was ratified, which changed how Senators are elected. Instead of the people voting for state legislators
who elect Senators, the people elected the Senators, making the election process of Senators a direct
democracy. The Framers chose to create a republic instead of direct democracy in order to prevent
social and elite groups from taking power. The 17th Amendment goes against does not just oppose the
Constitution, but it also disputes the ideology of the American Government as a federal republic.
Although most supporters of the 17th Amendment believe that it serves as a better mechanism for a
representative government, it is unconstitutional because of its opposing qualities against the Framers
who created the United States government with the vision of federalism and a republic. The

Industrialization occurred in Britain in the 1750s due to the environmental and social climate prime
for mechanization in industries. Due to the change in economic exportations from agricultural to
mechanized products, Britain s society began to change as people migrated to work in factories. The
migration of the newfound middleclass led to mass urbanization of various areas in England which
contrasted the previous quintessential English countryside that had dominated the nation. Through the
expansion of mechanical goods, the countryside lost land to factories and the environment was also
deeply affected by the influx of smoke climbing into the air. Contrary to the environmental problems,
the British were experienced economic glory as the became a superpower in the advancing
technologies. Through the industrialization, Britain would develop advanced war machines and would
vastly change British society hundreds of years later in 20th century London. JRR Tolkien was
profoundly affected by industrialization throughout his time in World War I. Beginning in 1915,
Tolkien was enlisted in the war but it did take much time for him to leave: in November of the same
year he was sent back to London because he was diagnosed with Trench fever. Although he soon
recovered from the illness by christmas it was recurring through 1917 to 1918. Despite this epidemic,
Tolkien continued to make camp visits to various army bases in London. In a particular visit to the
Hull area, Tolkien and Edith had been walking in the woods when Edith danced for him in a place
filled of hemlock. This inspired Tolkien in the Legendarium or The Silmarillion as is is now known, as
he described the tale of Beren and Luthien. Furthermore, the warfare in World War I inspired his
descriptions of the Wars that take place within the Silmarillion. World

In addition the protecting ourselves, having more privacy can protect the rights of other individuals.

Classification Systems For Offenders Essay
Over the last few decades classification systems for offenders have been used for a variety of
organizational purposes. Over time these classification systems have evolved, not only as a whole in
the criminal justice system, but also varying between different organizations. Classification systems
that create models based on the risks and needs of offenders are most popular. Throughout the years
these models and the purposes for their use have been in a state of change, as well as the way their
effectiveness is gaged. One of the most commonly used classification systems for offenders is the
combination of risk assessment and need assessment. The combination of these two systems of

The second generation was characterized by the custody classification risks and parolees being
classified on their risk of reoffending based on their custody classification. These early models were
administered routinely but scores rarely changed because the information in the assessment was static
and did not change over time (Van Voorhis, et al., 2009). Such information as the severity of prior
convictions, and prior felonies did not change between assessments and led to an overly simple
classification system that did not offer any options for treatment or change within offender behavior.
Additionally, it was proven that the earliest risk assessment models were not accurate in dealing with
female offenders because the history of women offenders is not as indicative of future behavior as it is
with male offenders (Van Voorhis et al., 2008). While the original risk assessment models were helpful
in achieving a basic glance at offender behavior risks, it lacked the quality assessment tools needed to
not only determine whether an offender was going to be a danger while institutionalized or the
community once paroled, but to fully offer options for rehabilitation. More recently, the combination
of risk/needs assessments have changed the course of classification models. No longer are risks
assessments conducted solely for the institutionalized but also are used to foresee new transgressions
with needs that are similarly elements of offender

Climate Change Research Paper
Climate change, a problem affecting many things, is affecting everyone, even if you do not notice it
directly. That is when it can hurt the most. It is affecting agriculture all around the world which means,
our food sources, economy, and many other important parts of life are feeling the effect of climate
change. From what we know today, Africa, Latin America, and South Asia together, in 2011,
accounted for approximately ninety five percent of the world s agricultural population. Other places,
however, in Northern European, Asian, and American countries, agricultural productivity many even
temporarily increase. This can increase because rising CO2 levels can stimulate plant growth,
although, this can decrease nutritional value. Crops, being a vital part of our food supply, are being
affected by climate change. This is not, and will not, be a positive or healthy change in our future.
Climate change will cause more extreme temperatures, so while this happens the temperature may
exceed the crop s optimal temperature. When this happens, the amounts of water and nutrients that a
certain crop needs to grow will not be available. High and extreme temperatures can also cause
droughts which will harm the crops by taking their water sources away. The crop s growing cycle will
be affected because they can not grow without water and nutrients. Extreme precipitation will also
affect a crop s growing cycle. Floods will provide to much water and could potentially drown the
crops.

Wife Of Bath And Pardoners Tale Essay
The Pardoner and The Wife of Bath by Geoffrey Chaucer was a intriguing read. The Canterbury Tales

Cold War Vs America
The end of the Cold War has brought about a renewed debate over competing theoretical traditions in
the study of international relations (Pietrzyk, 2001). With the mutual enemy of Nazi Germany, logic
would dictate that as America and the USSR fought as allies during World War Two, their relationship
after the war would be solid and friendly. However, the two countries despised each other because
they were both capable of destroying the other with the Atomic bomb.
As the scientific battle of enhancing the Atomic bomb varied between the countries, the struggle of
USSR communism versus US capitalism grew immensely. The animosity matured into pure
detestation as the Soviet Union passed the Warsaw and as America embarked on aggressive
nationalism. President Truman displayed America s power by prancing the USS Missouri battleship

In Søren Kierkegaard s book, Philosophical Fragments he first prefaces his writing by explaining his
own inadequacy to do so. It is his desire to deliberate upon the actuality of truth and it s application to
the human existence, but in order to do so, he deemed it necessary to admit that What is offered here is
only a pamphlet...without any claim to being a part of the scientific scholarly endeavor... (Preface 1 IV
176). Near the end of his preface Kierkegaard, in efforts to convey his intent to write without bias,
claims he will not share his opinion (IV 178). Upon establishing his character as a writer, Kierkegaard
divulges into what he calls his Thought Project as is found in part one of Philosophical Fragments. In
this section he starts by contemplating if indeed truth can be learned, and bases a lot of his
understanding and philosophical thought on the influences of socratic idealizations. Based upon this
thought process, it is established that all learning and seeking are but recollecting. Thus the ignorant
person merely needs to be reminded... (A.6 7 IV 180). Kierkegaard then further expounds upon the
processes of learning in order to establish a foundation for his Thought Process pertaining to the
teacher and the follower. According to kierkegaard, The teacher is to be the occasion that reminds the
learner, he cannot assist him to recollect that he actually does know the truth, for the learner is indeed
untruth (B. b. 25 IV 184). So in saying this it

The Clean and Green law also states that the Use Value must reflect the potential of the individual
parcel to produce, based upon soil capability. Another way to explain Use Value is the amount of
money that a prudent investor might invest in an acre of land and receive a reasonable rate of return
from the land use itself. 6. WHO DETERMINES CLEAN AND GREEN USE VALUES? Each year,
the Department of Agriculture publishes maximum Use Values for each county. Counties may apply
Use Values lower than the State maximums as long as the are applied uniformly to all properties and
are supportable by county appraisers. 7. DO I GET A TAX REDUCTION ON MY BUILDING(S)
UNDER CLEAN AND GREEN? Partially. The Clean and Green program primarily benefits the land
portion of the assessment. The value of the residence and commercial buildings is not affected by
Clean and Green. The 1998 amendment to Clean and Green now requires counties to use the
contributory value methodology when appraising farm or outbuildings. 8. DOES THE USE VALUE
ASSESSMENT AFFECT ALL OR PART OF MY TAXES? All. If the Clean and Green application is
approved, then the Use Value assessment will be used when computing all county, municipal, and
school real estate taxes. 9. IS THE LAND UNDER MY HOUSE AND OUTBUILDINGS ELIGIBLE
FOR USE VALUE ASSESSMENT?

Compare And Contrast Salt And Saline Soil
4. SALTS CREATE SALINE, SODIC, AND SALINE CONDITION IN SOIL:
Saline soils contain adequate amounts of salts to harm plants growth prominently. It may be identified
by white or light brown crusts on the soil surface. Saline soils usually have an EC of more than 4
mmho cm 1. Salts that are usually created in saline soils include NaCl (table salt), CaCl2, gypsum
(CaSO4), magnesium sul¬fate, potassium chloride and sodium sulfate.
The pH of saline soils is generally below 8.5. The normal desired range is 6.0 to 7.0, but many Texas
soils are naturally 7.5 to 8.3. Leaching the salts from these soils does not increase the pH of saline
soils. On the other hand Saline sodic soils are same as saline soils, except that they have significantly

Bolt Action Rifle History
A bolt action rifle is a very reliable, and very useful tool that was invented in 1824 by Johann
Nikolaus von Dreyse. The bolt action rifle has been used for hunting, protection, and has proved to be
a reliable weapon for military use in the defense of our country. The United States purchased 900 bolt
action rifles in 1862 which were used in the American Civil War at the battle of Antietam. These rifles
were single shot, paper cartridges that proved to be much faster in reloading than the muzzle loading
rifle previously used by American troops. Since then, America has used these rifles in nearly every
war fought. It wasn t until 1874 when the French began bolt action rifle production of their own, that
metal cartridges were invented and ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
While the bolt is being rotated upward, the firing pin is also rotating into a locking mechanism as a
safety feature. The firing pin is the needle looking rod that strikes the butt of the shell and ignites the
primer compound. After rotating the bolt all the way upward, pull the bolt all the way back until you
can no longer move it. This action ejects the previous shell and the chamber is now empty and ready
to receive the next shell. If the rifle is a single shot bolt action, now is when a new cartridge will need
to be manually inserted into the open chamber of the rifle. Then the bolt is pushed all the way forward
which loads the new shell into the chamber. If the rifle is an internal or an external magazine fed rifle,
the bolt will strip the next round from the magazine and push it forward until it is locked into the
firing chamber. Now, push the bolt all the way down. This action locks the shell in the chamber with
what are called locking lugs attached to the rotating receiver. This will lock the bullet in the chamber
and free the firing pin. Release the safety on the rifle which will be located either on or near the trigger
guard or on top of rifle back where the stock and metal action of the rifle meet. The rifle is now ready

Eli Whitney and the Cotton Gin Essay
Eli Whitney and the Cotton Gin
Eli Whitney :
Eli Whitney was the inventor of the cotton gin and a pioneer in the mass production of cotton.
Whitney was born in Westboro , Massachusetts., on Dec. 8, 1765, and died on Jan. 8, 1825. He
graduated from Yale College in 1792. By April 1793, Whitney had designed and constructed the
cotton gin, a machine that automated the separation of cottonseed from the short staple cotton fiber.
Eli Whitney s machine could produce up to 23 kg (50 lb) of cleaned cotton daily, making southern
cotton a profitable crop for the first time, but Whitney failed to profit from his invention, imitations of
his machine appeared, and his 1794 invention was not upheld until 1807.
Eli Whitney and his business ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Ironically, it was as a manufacturer of muskets that Whitney finally became rich.
Background on the Cotton Gin
The cotton gin is a device for removing the seeds from cotton fiber. Simple devices for that purpose
have been around for centuries, an East Indian machine called a charka was used to separate the seeds
from the lint when the fiber was pulled through a set of rollers. The charka was designed to work with
long staple cotton, but American cotton is short staple cotton. The cottonseed in Colonial America was
removed by hand, usually the work of slaves.
Eli Whitney s machine was the first to clean short staple cotton. His cotton engine consisted of spiked
teeth mounted on a boxed revolving cylinder which, when turned by a crank, pulled the cotton fiber
through small slotted openings so as to separate the seeds from the lint a rotating brush, operated via a
belt and pulleys, removed the fibrous lint from the projecting spikes.
The gins later became horse drawn and water powered gins and cotton production increased, along
with lowered costs. Cotton soon became the number one selling textile.
After the invention of the cotton gin, the yield of raw cotton doubled each decade after 1800. Demand
was fueled by other inventions of the Industrial Revolution, such as the machines to spin and weave it
and the steamboat to transport it. By mid century America was growing three quarters of the world s
supply of cotton, most

The Necklace, A Monkey s Paw, And The Gift Of Magi
The Necklace, A Monkey s Paw, and The Gift of Magi all have a distinctive technique that leads to a
deeper meaning of the story. The technique of The Necklace is represented by symbolism of the
necklace. In A Monkey s Paw, the technique that is seen is foreshadowing. In The Gift of Magi, irony
is the technique that is noticed throughout the story. All three short stories deal with the irony of
consequence. Each story involved a major decision and in each case the result of the decision was
incredibly unexpected. Through symbolism, foreshadowing, and irony the authors conclude that what
s inside the heart is far more important than material wealth. In The Necklace Mathilde is a poor
young woman who idolizes beautiful things ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
If she would ve been proud of her inner beauty and not so focused on wealth and status, then her life
would have been so much more rewarding. She learned the incredibly tough consequence of not
Madame Forester about losing the necklace. Her decision cost herself time and money but more
importantly, cost Mathilde her pride. In The Gift of Magi, Della and Jim sacrifice their prized
possessions for each other and for love. Irony is represented in this story when Della and Jim both get
each other gifts that mean a lot to each other. However, what they did not realize is that when Della
cut her hair to to buy Jim a chain for his watch, she was unaware that Jim was going to sell his watch
to buy her combs for her hair. The irony of their gift exchange is monumental as their unconditional
love for one another took over for their own personal possession. Jim exclaims, I don t think there s
anything in the way of a haircut or a shave or a shampoo that could make me like my girl any less. But
if you ll unwrap that package you may see why you had me going a while at first. The magi which are
described as wise men also signifies irony because Della and Jim s presents were more than wise.
They represented that a gift does not need to be expensive to have value. A gift can be more
meaningful just by the thought. The Monkey s Paw, deals with a family s unwillingness to accept
things as they should be. They desired more and paid the dire

  • 3. The Student Transitional Empowerment Program Thanks to the Student Transitional Empowerment Program (STEP), it has been very easy transitioning to Mason. Everyday I ask myself what I would do if I did not have STEP. Nobody understands how much I appreciate STEP for getting me ready for college, because I did not feel like a lost puppy one the first week of school. Without STEP I would be coming into campus with only one friend, but thanks to STEP I came into campus with over 30 friends, which I now call family. I have people who I can study with, grab lunch with and people who I can participate in activities with. In addition, where would I go in between my classes? Thanks to ODIME office, I have a place to relax and study in between my classes. However, not everything has been flowers and sun shine, because I have had some difficulties transitioning to Mason, two in particular. One being that I have to commute over 30 minutes from my house. In high school, it would literally take me two minutes to drive, now I have to go through a mission to get to my classes. The second thing I am having difficulties with is, how there are no school lunches and I do not have mason money from STEP. Personally, it is difficult to pack lunch when I get home and in the mornings because I am to tired and busy to do so at both times, so I go without food the whole day. This fall semester has been very different from the summer semester for me personally. One reason it has been different, is how the class lectures go at a slower pace. ... Throughout the years many people in the U.S have brought different invasive animals that can hurt the ecosystem they live in and can cause a serious problem with endangered species. Invasive species came into the U.S s eyes earlier in the day and the problem could either be getting better or worse. These animals are all over our U.S including Texas and Florida etc. Invasive species are a problem and there are many creative ways the problem is being addressed. In Texas the wild pig is hunted down by hunters and it is killed year round. When they are captured or killed they are sold to restaurants to be cooked and considered exotic meat. If it wasn t for a local farmer named Marsh the sheepdog idea never would have been a solution. Marsh is a chicken farmer and since he is a chicken farmer he has to stay up all night so the foxes will not come and eat them. While Marsh was doing his job keeping the foxes away, he heard a dog barking. He had realized it was a sheepdog barking at the foxes. So one day Marsh got a sheepdog and named him Ben. Ben did a great job protecting the chickens and when Marsh heard the news of the penguins he suggested using sheepdogs to patrol and guard the penguins. In 2006 the first sheepdog was put to the test, when the puppy patrol started up the population rebounded to around 150. Ever since the first sheepdog came no fox has touched one of those foxes. • 5. Two Standards Of Auditing As accountants and auditors, we are held to, and must comply with, two standards of professional conduct. Those standards are generally accepted accounting principles (GAAP) and generally accepted auditing standards (GAAS). GAAP enforces the uniform standards for preparing and presenting financial statements. GAAS governs the ways and means are used by public accountants when conducting an audit. GAAS establishes the standards for field work and mandates that sufficient evidence be found to provide reasonable assurance for issuing an audit opinion. Liability to Clients Please remember, as accountants we are held liable to our clients when we enter into contracts and are hired to perform services. The liability we face can come from items such as breach of contract, fraud and negligence. When an accountant enters into a contract, also known as an engagement, with a client the terms of said engagement are specified. In a contract an accountant has explicit and implicit duties. The accountant must perform all explicit duties in the contract. The implicit duties of the contract are implied, and the accountant agrees to perform them in a proficient and professional manner. If an accountant fails to perform the duties of the contract, he or she may be held in breach of the contract. An accountant may be found liable for two types of fraud. These two types are actual and constructive. Actual fraud occurs when there is a deliberate omission or misrepresentation of a material ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 6. Describe Michael s Identity In This Is It 1. Aesthetics. How do Michael s wardrobe, dance, vocal, poetic, and performative choices all point to a particular style? What would you, as a critic, call this style, and why? As a critic, I would call Michael s style transgressive. Michael tacitly challenged gendered, sartorial mores and wore women s couture like Givenchy and Balmain, adding androgynous touches like his trademark ornamented glove and cropped pants. His dance skills were similarly daring from his pioneer pop lock style to his signature, risqué crotch grab. His performative choices blended this corporeal innovation with digital spectacle and married with them with a mélange of sound, which distilled elements of pop, funk and soul. Perhaps most transgressive were his vocal choices, however; a high tenor, Michael had a three and a half octave range, according to vocal coach Seth Riggs, and he managed to connect this range in a fluid, unprecedented way. 2. Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... What does she intend to illustrate? How does the poem illustrate this point/s? I believe she meant to illustrate a narrative of a woman, Aunt Jennifer, under the oppression of a male. This is illustrated in the 2nd stanza when Rich describes Aunt Jennifer s hand as being too heavy to pull the needle through the wool because of the massive weight of Uncle s wedding band (7, 633). This massive weight is man s control over his wife and the wedding band is a symbol of his control. This idea is also supported in the third stanza when Rich describes Aunt Jennifer dead being still ringed with the ordeals she was mastered by (9 10, 633). Overall the poem illustrates oppression by stating in the first stanza what she really desires and then describing how she is oppressed and held back by the male in her life. For a poem to coalesce, for a character or an action to take shape, there has to be an imaginative transformation of reality which is no way passive...Moreover, if the imagination is to transcend and transform experience it has to question, to challenge, to conceive of alternatives, perhaps to the very life you are living at that moment. You have to be free to play around with the notion that day might be night, love might be hate, nothing can be too sacred for the imagination to turn into its opposite or to call experimentally by another name. Meijer Company is no exception and therefore specialized and thoroughly researched management methods are required to solve the ever changing corporate world. In the 1920 s statistical theory began to be applied effectively to quality control and by the 1950 s quality management practices were developing rapidly in Japan s manufacturing market, becoming fully embedded in industry in Europe and the USA by the 1980 s (Department of Trade and Industry, n.d.). But is a little vague, this could relate to a number of characteristics for example reliability and cost when in relation to products, or accessibility and efficiency in relation to the services sector. The Chartered Quality Institute believes quality is about making organisations perform for their stakeholders from improving products, services, systems and processes, to making sure that the whole organisation is fit and effective (Chartered Quality Institute, 2016) This definition of quality is specific and up to date with today s requirements of the application of quality. This definition demonstrates Feigenbaum s (1961) idea that quality is from the cradle to the grave and also addresses stakeholders. This could be the customer of a product, or client of a service for example a patient in a hospital. Comparatively this definition of quality is more rounded than the ISO and Dictionary definitions and encompasses the idea of satisfying the customer and constant improvement. Constant improvement and customer satisfaction is a common theme within the principles of many philosophers of quality. The contribution of quality innovators have made contemporary quality what it is today by developing and deploying new frameworks and techniques. (Rose, 2005). Many Americans choose to work with their heads; however not all Americans were always given a choice on how they wanted to work. Viramontes Under the Feet of Jesus and Rivera s And the Earth Did Not Devour Him gave accurate descriptions to the types of situations many Hispanic families used to face when trying to support a whole family while working in the fields. In both Under the Feet of Jesus and And the Earth Did Not Devour Him, Viramontes and Rivera illustrate how depending on physical labor jobs created additional obstacles for migrant families. In the novel Under the Feet of Jesus , Estrella is the oldest of the children and has a larger recollection of memories from when her family was struggling the most. Recalling the consequences of her father s departure ...every job was not enough wage, every uncertainty rested on one certainty: food. The phone was disconnected. She remembered the moving, all night packing with trash bags left behind to a cheaper rent they couldn t afford... (14). Viramontes displays the severity of these situations because these memories are being recollected by a child. Splitting up property, agreeing to child custody and other aspects of ending a marriage can be traumatic. However, there is a simpler way. Collaborative law can settle family legal issues such as divorce, without the need to go to court. Here is an explanation of what collaboration is and how it can be better than a traditional divorce. Collaboration Is Not Mediation Frequently, collaboration and mediation are thought to mean the same thing in divorce. They are not. Collaborative law is a voluntary process that provides a venue to reach an amiable settlement. It involves a binding agreement contract that both parties consent to as a way to avoid a time consuming and costly divorce. Why Collaborative Law Might Be Right for You The thought of a divorce hearing can create an unparalleled level of anxiousness. Collaborative law by its nature is designed to reduce the level of anxiety surrounding a divorce. There are three basic reasons why using collaboration may be right for your situation. Informal and Relaxed Setting One of the most appealing aspects of collaborative law is that it can avoid the necessity of going to a courtroom. While there may be a number of meetings between both parties and their legal representation, each can take place in an informal, relaxed environment. By avoiding the stressful litigation process, collaborative law spare families the inherent pressure of courtroom divorce. The way Google has structured its management and divided the stock has put Brin and Page in a position to which they will be able to retain most of the power of the company aside from stockholders, whereas management will remain flat under them. The questions that the other stockholders have about the way the company is structured will not have an effect on the future of Google. At first look, it may seem that Okowkwo s story is the main theme of the book, but upon further examination it is easy to see that the plight of his indigenous Igbo people are the main theme representing what really fell apart. Achebe introduces the reader to the intricate culture of the Igbo people from the earliest chapters in the book. He describes rituals, laws, and religion of these people with great attention to detail allowing the reader to further understand and identify with the Igbo people on a personal level. His punishment for this is a seven year exile for his entire family. For the reader this presents as a sign that things are about to change and that the dynamics of the book are heading in a different direction. At this point the reader may believe that this is the turning point in the book, but it is merely a sign of things to come. Achebe also provides readers with another sign of things to come in the destruction of Abame, a neighboring village located near the village of Okonkwo s exile. A white man arrived at Abame and was later killed by the people of the Abame village who feared he would bring about the destruction promised by the Oracle (Achebe, 1994). The destruction of the Abame village is Achebe s first signal to readers that the people of the Igbo may never be the same. After the destruction of Abame, missionaries arrive in Mbanta to spread the message of their Christianity bringing along with them, the English government system (Achebe, 1994). Achebe describes the arrival in such a manner that the reader can visualize the distinct differences between the two groups of people. The Christians are visibly more modern with a religious foundation that is extremely different from that of the Igbo people. They also bring with them laws that function in no way close to the Igbo culture s form of crime and punishment. When Okonkwo hears this news he feels like ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

UNLV Reflection Essay As UNLV Graduates its 2016 Spring class, its commencements speakers offer words of community and impact The city of Las Vegas is full of excitement and wonder kind of like exiting the doors of your final lecture as a senior in college. College can be a difficult transition for many; and it s easy to get caught up in the social pressures while trying to find your place. As we try and find ways of connecting with one another, UNLV s 2016 Spring graduation commencement speakers Daniel Waquar (under) Monica Moradkhan (graduate) use their personal experiences and educational attainment to connect with their peers in their respective fields. At the end of the game, no matter how sinful or pious, the king and the pawn return to the same box. It is the most self evident of truths, one discovered by all people at some point in their lives and acknowledged by every culture, every religion, and every civilization since the dawn of time. And yet as individuals, the concept of death boggles our minds to the extent that we cannot comprehend it in its essence: nothingness so dimensionless we can t even miss it. Death troubles us so deeply that we lie to ourselves; we convince ourselves of our own immortality either through the idea of eternity in heaven and God, the coming marvels of genetic engineering, our deep legacy to our family or nation, or even just by craving our name into stone, all of which we perceive as eternal. This way of thinking, while arguably necessary for the sake of our own sanity, helps us maintain our delusion immortality. In the rare occasions when we do acknowledge our impermanence, it is often through insipid catchphrases like YOLO. In stark contrast to this idea that there s always tomorrow, Shakespeare s sonnet That Time of Year Thou Mayst in Me Behold addresses the epiphany of human impermanence through the lens of a dying man, likely of old age or poor health, who acknowledges his approaching conclusion and must reconcile this reality with the fact that his lover (perhaps his wife) will long outlive him. Shinto has no concept of sin, but rather it teaches that evil actions can contaminate individuals by causing them to accrue impurities that poison innocence and offend the Kami. The symbolism of water recognizes that the purification process is letting the person previous sins and acts of uncleanliness flow out of their soul and allowing the Kami, in this case water spirit, to carry it away. The uses of salt could be applied to purify the land before any use such as agriculture or construction of buildings. The rituals of purification do not apply to only individuals and groups, but to the christening of new buildings and the start of a new business or a change in government officials. • 30. The 17th Amendment Of The United States Constitution The 17th Amendment The American government was created based on the principle of federalism, the system of government that establishes a written constitution that divides the powers of government to a federal and state level. The U.S. Federal Government consists of three branches, the Executive, Legislative, and Judicial. It also utilizes checks and balances so these branches have equal power. The main goal of federalism is to balance the central government with the state government, and initially the U.S. Constitution established that the Senate shall be composed of two Senators from each State, chosen by the Legislature (US Const. Article I, Section 3). However, in 1912 the 17th Amendment was ratified, which changed how Senators are elected. Instead of the people voting for state legislators who elect Senators, the people elected the Senators, making the election process of Senators a direct democracy. The Framers chose to create a republic instead of direct democracy in order to prevent social and elite groups from taking power. The 17th Amendment goes against does not just oppose the Constitution, but it also disputes the ideology of the American Government as a federal republic. Although most supporters of the 17th Amendment believe that it serves as a better mechanism for a representative government, it is unconstitutional because of its opposing qualities against the Framers who created the United States government with the vision of federalism and a republic. Due to the change in economic exportations from agricultural to mechanized products, Britain s society began to change as people migrated to work in factories. The migration of the newfound middleclass led to mass urbanization of various areas in England which contrasted the previous quintessential English countryside that had dominated the nation. Through the expansion of mechanical goods, the countryside lost land to factories and the environment was also deeply affected by the influx of smoke climbing into the air. Contrary to the environmental problems, the British were experienced economic glory as the became a superpower in the advancing technologies. These early models were administered routinely but scores rarely changed because the information in the assessment was static and did not change over time (Van Voorhis, et al., 2009). Such information as the severity of prior convictions, and prior felonies did not change between assessments and led to an overly simple classification system that did not offer any options for treatment or change within offender behavior. Additionally, it was proven that the earliest risk assessment models were not accurate in dealing with female offenders because the history of women offenders is not as indicative of future behavior as it is with male offenders (Van Voorhis et al., 2008). While the original risk assessment models were helpful in achieving a basic glance at offender behavior risks, it lacked the quality assessment tools needed to not only determine whether an offender was going to be a danger while institutionalized or the community once paroled, but to fully offer options for rehabilitation. More recently, the combination of risk/needs assessments have changed the course of classification models. It is affecting agriculture all around the world which means, our food sources, economy, and many other important parts of life are feeling the effect of climate change. From what we know today, Africa, Latin America, and South Asia together, in 2011, accounted for approximately ninety five percent of the world s agricultural population. Other places, however, in Northern European, Asian, and American countries, agricultural productivity many even temporarily increase. This can increase because rising CO2 levels can stimulate plant growth, although, this can decrease nutritional value. Crops, being a vital part of our food supply, are being affected by climate change. This is not, and will not, be a positive or healthy change in our future. Climate change will cause more extreme temperatures, so while this happens the temperature may exceed the crop s optimal temperature. When this happens, the amounts of water and nutrients that a certain crop needs to grow will not be available. • 38. Zzzz Best Case 1.9 1. Ernst Whinney never issued an audit opinion on financial statements of ZZZZ Best but did issue a review report on the company s quarterly statements for the three months ended July 31, 1986. How does a review differ from an audit, particularly in terms of assurance implied by the auditor s report? A review and an audit report are both a form of an attestation engagement. A Review, however, is less in scope so it provides a moderate level of assurance on the financial statements. It is considered a sniff of an audit, which comparatively provides reasonable assurance that no material misstatements occurred. Since a review deals with a limited scope, it does not provide the basis for expressing an opinion on the presentation of the ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Tom Padgett made the confirmations and management provided the paperwork, yet all the sources were involved in the fraud. 3. In testimony before Congress, George Greenspan reported that one means he used to audit the insurance restoration contracts was to verify that his client actually received payment on those jobs. How can such apparently reliable evidence lead an auditor to an improper conclusion? It is possible for an auditor to come to an improper conclusion because documents, like invoices, could be easily falsified if management originally handles them or if the auditor receives them from management, like in the case of ZZZZ Best and Minkow. The auditor must always confirm payments directly with the third party. 4. What is the purpose of predecessors successor auditor communications? Which party, the predecessor or successor auditor, has the responsibility for initiating these communications? Briefly summarize the information that a successor auditor should obtain from the predecessor auditor. The purpose of the predecessor successor auditor communication is to inform the successor auditor of the nature of the industry and specific attributes of the client to help determine if the successor auditor wants to take them on as a client. • 40. Cold War Vs America The end of the Cold War has brought about a renewed debate over competing theoretical traditions in the study of international relations (Pietrzyk, 2001). With the mutual enemy of Nazi Germany, logic would dictate that as America and the USSR fought as allies during World War Two, their relationship after the war would be solid and friendly. However, the two countries despised each other because they were both capable of destroying the other with the Atomic bomb. As the scientific battle of enhancing the Atomic bomb varied between the countries, the struggle of USSR communism versus US capitalism grew immensely. The animosity matured into pure detestation as the Soviet Union passed the Warsaw and as America embarked on aggressive nationalism. President Truman displayed America s power by prancing the USS Missouri battleship and the USS Franklin Roosevelt aircraft carrier through the wanted territory, Straights of Dardanelles, of the Soviet Union. This is parallel to the Salem Witch Trials described in Arthur Miller s book, The Crucible. During the Salem Witch Trials, many of the so called witches were merely the neighborhood heroes that made average folk envious. The jealousy that the Trials brought is evident as Miller writes, I marvel how such a strong man may let such a sickly wife be PROCTOR, angered at himself as well: You ll speak nothin of Elizabeth! • 41. Philosophical Fragments By Soren Kierkegaard Essay In Søren Kierkegaard s book, Philosophical Fragments he first prefaces his writing by explaining his own inadequacy to do so. It is his desire to deliberate upon the actuality of truth and it s application to the human existence, but in order to do so, he deemed it necessary to admit that What is offered here is only a pamphlet...without any claim to being a part of the scientific scholarly endeavor... (Preface 1 IV 176). Near the end of his preface Kierkegaard, in efforts to convey his intent to write without bias, claims he will not share his opinion (IV 178). Upon establishing his character as a writer, Kierkegaard divulges into what he calls his Thought Project as is found in part one of Philosophical Fragments. In this section he starts by contemplating if indeed truth can be learned, and bases a lot of his understanding and philosophical thought on the influences of socratic idealizations. Based upon this thought process, it is established that all learning and seeking are but recollecting. Thus the ignorant person merely needs to be reminded... (A.6 7 IV 180). Kierkegaard then further expounds upon the processes of learning in order to establish a foundation for his Thought Process pertaining to the teacher and the follower. According to kierkegaard, The teacher is to be the occasion that reminds the learner, he cannot assist him to recollect that he actually does know the truth, for the learner is indeed untruth (B. b. 25 IV 184). The bolt action rifle has been used for hunting, protection, and has proved to be a reliable weapon for military use in the defense of our country. The United States purchased 900 bolt action rifles in 1862 which were used in the American Civil War at the battle of Antietam. These rifles were single shot, paper cartridges that proved to be much faster in reloading than the muzzle loading rifle previously used by American troops. Since then, America has used these rifles in nearly every war fought. It wasn t until 1874 when the French began bolt action rifle production of their own, that metal cartridges were invented and ... The firing pin is the needle looking rod that strikes the butt of the shell and ignites the primer compound. After rotating the bolt all the way upward, pull the bolt all the way back until you can no longer move it. This action ejects the previous shell and the chamber is now empty and ready to receive the next shell. If the rifle is a single shot bolt action, now is when a new cartridge will need to be manually inserted into the open chamber of the rifle. Then the bolt is pushed all the way forward which loads the new shell into the chamber. If the rifle is an internal or an external magazine fed rifle, the bolt will strip the next round from the magazine and push it forward until it is locked into the firing chamber. Now, push the bolt all the way down. This action locks the shell in the chamber with what are called locking lugs attached to the rotating receiver. • 47. Eli Whitney and the Cotton Gin Essay Eli Whitney and the Cotton Gin Eli Whitney : Eli Whitney was the inventor of the cotton gin and a pioneer in the mass production of cotton. Whitney was born in Westboro , Massachusetts., on Dec. 8, 1765, and died on Jan. 8, 1825. He graduated from Yale College in 1792. By April 1793, Whitney had designed and constructed the cotton gin, a machine that automated the separation of cottonseed from the short staple cotton fiber. Eli Whitney s machine could produce up to 23 kg (50 lb) of cleaned cotton daily, making southern cotton a profitable crop for the first time, but Whitney failed to profit from his invention, imitations of his machine appeared, and his 1794 invention was not upheld until 1807. Background on the Cotton Gin The cotton gin is a device for removing the seeds from cotton fiber. Simple devices for that purpose have been around for centuries, an East Indian machine called a charka was used to separate the seeds from the lint when the fiber was pulled through a set of rollers. The charka was designed to work with long staple cotton, but American cotton is short staple cotton. The cottonseed in Colonial America was removed by hand, usually the work of slaves. Eli Whitney s machine was the first to clean short staple cotton. His cotton engine consisted of spiked teeth mounted on a boxed revolving cylinder which, when turned by a crank, pulled the cotton fiber through small slotted openings so as to separate the seeds from the lint a rotating brush, operated via a belt and pulleys, removed the fibrous lint from the projecting spikes. The gins later became horse drawn and water powered gins and cotton production increased, along with lowered costs. Cotton soon became the number one selling textile. After the invention of the cotton gin, the yield of raw cotton doubled each decade after 1800. Demand was fueled by other inventions of the Industrial Revolution, such as the machines to spin and weave it and the steamboat to transport it. But if you ll unwrap that package you may see why you had me going a while at first. The magi which are described as wise men also signifies irony because Della and Jim s presents were more than wise. They represented that a gift does not need to be expensive to have value.
