This document discusses the elements and principles of art as they relate to photography composition. The elements are line, shape, space, value, texture, and color. The principles are emphasis, balance, unity, contrast, movement/rhythm, and pattern/repetition. Understanding these elements and principles allows photographers to intentionally compose photographs that are visually interesting and engaging for viewers.

n creating a design one of the components which interact is the Art Elements The elements and principles of design are flexible and should be interpreted within the context of current fashion. A design can be defined as an arrangement of lines, shape, colors and texture that create a visual image. The principles of design are the rates that govern how elements are combined. The elements are therefore the raw materials that must be combined successfully.

2024.06.01 Introducing a competency framework for languag learning materials ...Sandy Millin
http://sandymillin.wordpress.com/iateflwebinar2024
Published classroom materials form the basis of syllabuses, drive teacher professional development, and have a potentially huge influence on learners, teachers and education systems. All teachers also create their own materials, whether a few sentences on a blackboard, a highly-structured fully-realised online course, or anything in between. Despite this, the knowledge and skills needed to create effective language learning materials are rarely part of teacher training, and are mostly learnt by trial and error.
Knowledge and skills frameworks, generally called competency frameworks, for ELT teachers, trainers and managers have existed for a few years now. However, until I created one for my MA dissertation, there wasn’t one drawing together what we need to know and do to be able to effectively produce language learning materials.
This webinar will introduce you to my framework, highlighting the key competencies I identified from my research. It will also show how anybody involved in language teaching (any language, not just English!), teacher training, managing schools or developing language learning materials can benefit from using the framework.

We all have good and bad thoughts from time to time and situation to situation. We are bombarded daily with spiraling thoughts(both negative and positive) creating all-consuming feel , making us difficult to manage with associated suffering. Good thoughts are like our Mob Signal (Positive thought) amidst noise(negative thought) in the atmosphere. Negative thoughts like noise outweigh positive thoughts. These thoughts often create unwanted confusion, trouble, stress and frustration in our mind as well as chaos in our physical world. Negative thoughts are also known as “distorted thinking”.

2. Elements
The basic building blocks
• Line
• Shape/Form
• Space
• Value
• Texture
• Color
3. Lines
• A mark made by a moving point.
• Has greater length than width.
• Directs the eye – horizontal, vertical,
diagonal, curvy, zig-zag, etc.
• Can be actual obvious lines or the borders
or edges of shapes.
5. Shape/Form
• A contained area.
• Can be GEOMETRIC (man-made) ex.
Square, triangle, circle, etc.
• Can be ORGANIC (natural) ex. Leaves,
humans, puddles, etc.
• Shapes are 2-Dimensional and flat. (circle)
• Forms are 3-Dimensional with height, width
and depth. (sphere)
• Used to create a sense of space and
substance.
7. Space
• The area used or unused in a composition.
• Positive space – the area the objects/subject
takes up.
• Negative space – the area around, under,
through and between.
• Gives the photo a 3-dimensional feeling.
(Depth)
• Foreground (closest), Middle ground, and
Background (farthest).
• Can be open, crowded, near, far, etc.
9. Value
• Black and White and all the Grays in
between
• Dark to Light
• Can add drama and impact to composition.
• Can give a sense of timelessness
• Train your eye to read color as Black and
White!
11. Texture
• The surface quality.
• How an object feels, or how it looks like
it feels.
• Rough, smooth, bumpy, gooey, sharp,
etc.
• Adds interest! Sense of sight and sense
of touch involved.
15. Principles
• The different arrangements – or
compositions - of the ELEMENTS of design
to create artistic, interesting, more visually
powerful photographs.
• Principles
16. What are the Principles of Art?
• Emphasis
• Balance
• Unity
• Contrast
• Movement/ Rhythm
• Pattern/Repetition
17. Pattern/Repetition
• An element that occurs over and over again
in a composition.
• Can repeat the element in a consistent
pattern.
• Can repeat the element in a variation of the
pattern.
19. EMPHASIS or Focal Point
Emphasis in a composition refers
to developing points of interest to
pull the viewer's eye to important
parts of the body of the work.
21. Balance
Balance is a sense of stability in
the body of work. Balance can be
created by repeating same
shapes and by creating a feeling
of equal weight.
25. CONTRAST
Contrast refers to the opposites
and differences in the work. You
can achieve variety by using
different shapes, textures, colors
and values in your work.
27. Movement
Movement adds excitement to your work by
showing action and directing the viewers eye
throughout the picture plane. Rhythm is a type of
movement in drawing and painting. It is seen in
repeating of shapes and colors. Alternating lights
and darks also give a sense of rhythm.
29. The Rule of Thirds
Try not to shoot anything dead Center!!! Your viewer
will spend more time with your image is the objects are
placed all around the center.
Dead center means just that…DEAD. When the
audience only has to look at the center , they spend very
little time viewing and thinking about your image
30. Elements and Principles in
Photographic Composition
• The Elements and Principles are used in
making photographs – not just taking
photographs.
• You have to know and understand the
elements and principles of art to see them
all around you and capture them in your
photos.
• Good luck!
