1. WHAT KIND OF MEDIA
INSTITUTION MIGHT DISTRIBUTE
YOUR MEDIA PRODUCT AND WHY?
2. The media institutions that might distribute our film are going
to be from British studios. Such as:
This is because of certain factors. Such as:
Culturally Specific
British themes
Character driven
British fundingFilmed in Britain
3. The colouring within thriller films try to make a contrast. Our film represents a contrast between characters, we have shown
this through parts being black and white and others colour. The twist in our colouring is that the darkest character is in colour
so you don’t expect her and the innocent character is in black and white which makes the audience have a certain feeling
about that character. This is backing up our contrast of the two storylines joining together and contrasting.
British media institutions may be interested in our film because it is culturally specific. This includes features such as ‘how
the film looks’ and how it ‘comes across to the audience’. Our film is matching the theme of a thriller with the low key lighting
and the dark characters as it gives off a certain atmosphere which relates to conventional thrillers. This will generally help
the creepy affect come across to the audience which is what they expect from a thriller.
One more aspect that will make British media institutions interested is that it is character driven which allows the all the
action/drama to come from the characters. For example, all the hunting and torturing in our opening sequence comes from
specific characters not machines which makes the experience more intimate and eaary. Having a British theme is again
going to appeal to British media institutions. Our storyline has targeted a student at university, which is including targeting our
audience of students and young adults.
Our opening sequence shows many British themes such as typical ‘dark’ characters and the typical innocent character
having to deal with the scariest situations. However, we do have other themes that feature an unexpected twist. But
this will again appeal to the British media institutions as our audience love to have a surprise ending rather than being
able to guess the obvious.
4. British media institutions may produce our film because we are trying to portray moral statements about the British
culture. Our main moral statement we show is “there will always be a punishment for a bad action”. We showed this
statement through a computer hacker and a hegemonic male. This links to our police system for punishing someone
for a crime, however we have put a twist on it and had the punishment not come from the law.
Our film could also be distributed through the internet. Using the internet would increase our chances of access to
our target audience (teenagers and young adults). This would make our film a lot more accessible to our audience
as that generation our very computer orientated. We could distribute our film on YouTube, Facebook and Twitter to
get into the right framework and audience.
5. There are some small British institutions that may produce our film such as Film4. Film4 may produce our film because
the genre they show tends to be thrillers/horrors and our theme is a thriller. This would mean they attract around the
same target audience we are trying to attract. This studio is very ‘current’ and shows the up and coming/popular films
which appeals to the younger audience. Film4 may also want to produce our film because we do show both
conventional and unconventional features such as a torturing but done by a female this means our film will be different
from the typical thrillers produced and therefore a wider audience would be interested because its different.
Our film is doesn’t appeal to a mass audience because we don’t include typical conventions to appeal to an American
audience. As we don’t shown famous American landmarks, we don’t have famous actors and our budget is extremely
low therefore the American audience would see this film as ‘amateur’. This is again explaining why our film would
appeal to mainly British institutions. The controversial subjects we used includes torture scenes which is very common
in thriller films and therefore could be off putting to a large majority of people.
6. Our film does show some of the typical British themes such as a simple torture scene and a student. Many British thrillers tend
to include a torture of some kind and therefore our story being based around a university student could be potentially ‘typical’
therefore mass audiences wouldn’t find it original, which is again suggesting why we couldn’t appeal to a mass audience.
Some people may just be ‘bored’ of seeing bad things happen to students or it could also bring a worried issues to close to
home for some parents etc. and therefore wont want to watch it.
Our low budget is appealing to the British media institutions because it is a well known challenge that British films face
compared to the American industry. This would prove that our film should belong in the British film industry. And again, this is
showing why our film wouldn’t appeal to a mass audience as the budget doesn’t allow the film to have all the conventions larger
audiences are looking for, it can only contain a few. Having a niche audience is again attracting a small audience because it
shows it belongs to a British film industry, which means it doesn’t need to attract the American audience.
Hollywood would not be interested in our film because it doesn’t include American actors, typical American locations and it
doesn’t have a huge budget therefore special effects are limited. Our film also doesn’t include fantasy's of the American dream
and therefore would put off that audience all together. Which is again suggesting why our film belongs mainly to the British film
industry and why we wouldn’t be able to attract a mass audience, only the British.
