3. WHAT IS A CARBON FOOTPRINT?
A carbon footprint is defined as the total amount of greenhouse
gases produced to directly and indirectly support human activities,
usually expressed in equivalent tons of carbon dioxide (CO2).
Your carbon footprint is the sum of all emissions of CO2 (carbon
dioxide), which were induced by your activities in a given time frame
and it measures the greenhouse gases that you are responsible for
creating. Also common activities, like using electricity and driving a
car, emit those gases.
Usually a carbon footprint is calculated for the time period of a year.
4. Greenhouse gases are gases in Earth’s
atmosphere that trap heat. They let sunlight
pass through the atmosphere, but they
prevent the heat that the sunlight brings
from leaving the atmosphere. Examples of
greenhouse gases are: ozone, water vapor
and carbon dioxide.
5. DIRECT AND INDIRECT CARBON EMISSIONS
Direct carbon emissions comes
from the site of production, so
they are raw material such as
petrol, diesel,natural gas…
Indirect carbon emissions
comes from a process of
tranformation (for examples
electricity)
6. THE MAIN EFFECT OF CARBON FOOTPRINT
The ultimate effect of the carbon footprint is the climate
change caused by greenhouse gases, whether natural or
human-produced. This cause the rising of the temperature
and a a consequent melting of glaciers.
7. HOW TO REDUCE YOUR CARBON FOOTPRINT
We can do some little things to reduce our carbon footprint:
•Use more public services,bike or walk more, instead of using
the car;
•Reduce the use of energy: for examples leaving our
electronics unplugged at all times,because even if they are
powered down, they continue to use energy. Or also using less
the dishwasher and the washing machine, and so on…;
•Switch to a renewable energy option (like solar panels);
•Eat less meat: in fact the production of red meat uses a lot of
feed, water and land. Cows themselves also give off methane
emissions;
•Recycle as much as possible.
These are some of the possibility to reduce carbon footprint,
but there are many others
