3. "Let's Simulate Mitosis"
Introduction
The mitosis process ensures the generation of
two identical cells from the mother cell. In this
way two diploid cells are generated from a
diploid cell.

4. Needed for each group
8 pipe cleaners of which 4 are long
(two for each color) and 4 are shorter
(two for each color).
Beads of various colors to be inserted into
the brushes
White papers
Colored pencils of various colors

6. We will have to simulate mitosis by
reproducing the various phases using the
material made available. The built model
of each phase will have to be reported.
So we will make some photos to be used
showing how it is done.
Description of the activity:

7. Target:
Simulate the process of mitosis in all its
phases

8. Procedure (Mitosis):
1. Combine your 2 desks that will make up
your cell.

11. 2. Beads represent genes; put them in
the brushes to build the chromosomes.
The diploid cell of your model will
have two homologous pairs of
chromosomes (2n = 4).

12. To keep track of these pairs, make a
longer and shorter one. Build a long
chromosome by inserting 3 beads of
color 1 (as desired) at one end and 3
beads of color 2 at the other end into
the brush.

14. 3. Make the second chromosome of the
long pair using 3 beads of color 3 at
one end and 3 beads of color 4 at the
other end.

16. 4. For the second pair of chromosomes
use 8 beads (2 color 5, 2 color 6, 2
color 7 and 2 color 8) to be inserted
in the 2 homologous chromosomes
