4. Peace
Peace has been defined as ‘absence of violence’.
Peace should mean not only absence of war, but also violence in all
forms, such as conflicts, threat to life, social degradation,
discrimination, oppression, exploitation, poverty, injustice, and so on.
5. Peace is a state of mind.
This is beautifully expressed in the Preamble to the
UNESCO Constitution:
"Since wars begin in the minds of men, it is in the minds of men
that the defence of peace must be constructed".
Peace is more than absence of violence; it is tolerance, understanding,
and respect of differences and it is love.
It is concern for others over concern for self.
6. “Peace is the behaviour that encourages harmony in the way
people talk, listen, and interact with each other and
discourages actions to hurt, harm, or destroy each other.”
Theresa M. Bey and Gwendolyn U. Turner (1995)
How to cultivate that ‘peace-behaviour’ among children,
youth and adults is the broad concern of peace education.
7.
8. Peace education is holistic. It embraces the physical, emotional,
intellectual, and social growth of children within a framework deeply
rooted in traditional human values. It is based on a philosophy that teaches
love, compassion, trust, fairness, co-operation and reverence for the
human family and all life on our beautiful planet
— Fran Schmidt and Alice Friedman (1988)
9. Peace education is skill building. It empowers
children to find creative and non-destructive
ways to settle conflict and to live in harmony
with themselves, others, and their world......
Peace building is the task of every human being
and the challenge of the human family.
—Fran Schmidt and Alice Friedman (1988)
10. Peace education is a planning strategy of eliminating the conflicts
and violence caused by injustice, inequality and human rights
violations, and implementing the ways and means of reducing the
same through appropriate teaching and learning tactics by means
of producing responsible global citizen to attain and spread the
peace in the world. Therefore peace education is a goal of
education.
13. It encourages the search for alternatives as well as possible non-violent skills and
sharpens the awareness about the existence of holistic relationships between people
and within and between nations.
Peace Education helps the students to develop a rich vision of peace to work for a
viable global society by fostering the changes in order to make the world a better and
more humane place.
Peace Education helps to develop the values and skills to assist the students in
striving for the fullness of life through the creation of constructive behaviours for
dealing with problems so to minimize and eliminate conflict. It also helps to explore
peace both as a state of being and as an active process for the promotion of positive
human relations.
14. The practice of the philosophy and processes
embedded in Peace Education is essential for
the betterment of oneself and society.
The strategies of Peace Education helps one to
keep
pace with the continuity of his/her life by the
formation of positive attitude and motivates one
to change his / her outlook.
conclusion
15. Thus, Peace Education is indeed the
