3. WHAT IS PEACE?
• THE WORD PEACE IS MOSTLY USED IN A NARROW SENSE TO MEAN ABSENSE OF
WAR.IT SHOULD MEAN NOT ONLY THE ABSENSE OF WAR,IN VIOLENCE IN ALL
FORMS SUCH AS CONFLICT,THREAT TO LIFE,SOCIAL DEGRADATION,
DISCRIMINATION,POVERTY,INJUSTICE AND SO ON.
• JOHN GALTONG(1964) SAID ABOUT TWO TYPOLOGIES OF PEACE. A)POSITIVE
PEACE B)NEGETIVE PEACE.
• ABSENCE OF ALL SUCH UNHELPFUL FACTORS TO A GOOD LIFE,CAN BE CALLED
NEGETIVE PEACE.
• POSITIVE PEACE IS PRESENCE OF SOCIAL JUSTICE,NON VIOLENCE,INTEGRATION
OF HUMAN SOCIETY,NON EXPLOITATIVE RELATIONSHIPS AS WELL AS HUMAN
AND ECOLOGICAL WELL BEING.

5. WHEN DID PEACE EDUCATION START
• Max Lawson and Vardiana Grossi,gives two views of the historical departure point
before WW2.
• Lawson’s beliefs(17th century) a unity based knowledge that aim to bring people
together.
• Grossi starts in the early 19th century when the peace movement began from
organisations. Children should be learn moral, ethic and religion in the Sunday
schools.
• Grossi writes “Between 1889and 1939, 33 universal peace congress take place,
most of which address peace education.”
• In 1912 American school peace league was founded and a lot of teacher in
different countries became members, and an annual school peace day
(May18)which was celebrated in schools.
6. CONCEPT OF PEACE EDUCATION
Peace education is more effective and meaningful when it is adopted according to the
social and cultural context and the needs of a country.
It should be global relevant.
According to Harris 2008,”Peace education is the process of teaching people about the
threats of violence and strategies for peace, and may take place inside or outside our class
room”.
The NCF view of peace education: The NCF speaks of the compelling need for peace
education. Clearly stating that education must be oriented towards values associated with
‘peaceful and harmonious co-existence’.
Peace education in UNICEF refers to process of promoting the
knowledge,skills,attitudes,and values needed to bring about behaviour changes that will
enable children, youth and adult to prevent conflict and violence, both overt and
structural; to resolve conflict peacefully.

8. AIMS AND OBJECTIVES OF PEACE EDUCATION
• To create in the learner the awareness, knowledge and sensivity regarding issues that
deals with war and peace, power and justice, ecology and environment, conflict etc.
• To develop skill in critical thinking and problem solving/conflict resolution, empathy,
assertiveness, sharing and cooperation.
• To instil in the learner the attitude of self respect and self esteem, respect for other,
open mindness and vision, environment concern, commitment to justice etc.
• Create framework for achieving peace and peaceful creative societies etc.
Peace education need not
be imparted as a separate
subject as a time-table.
It is a interdisciplinary
subject
9. SCOPE OF PEACE EDUCATION
INDIVIDUAL/SELF-DEVELOPMENTAL LEVEL: Positive thinking, assertive
behaviour,Empathic listening,decision making,critical thinking.
SCHOOL LEVEL: Friendly teacher-pupil relationship,co-operation
NATIONAL LEVEL: Citizenship Education,understand current socio-
political and economic problem
GLOBAL LEVEL: Children have developed a sensible world view.Gender
issue,population,world culture.
10. INTERNATIONAL AND INDIAN ATTEMPS ON PEACE EDUCATION
The UNESCO recommendations on education for international
understanding,peace,human rights, and fundamental freedoms.
ASP net(Associated Schools project Network) was launched by UNESCO in 1953 to
promote international understanding for peace.
As 2003,ASP net includes institution ranging from nursery school to teacher
training institution in 117 countries.
ASP’S Project ‘peace and disarmament education's being implemented in 4
countries:Albania,Niger,Peru,and Columbia by the UN Dept. of Disarmament
Affairs(UNDDA) and the Hague Appeal for Peace(HAP).
The Centre for Research on Education for Peace(CREP) at the university of Haifa,
Israel, has undertaken a number of research projects on education for peace.
The Gandhi Peace Foundation, Gandhi's Smriti and Darshan Smriti,Gandhian
Institute of Studies and Jaipur Peace Foundation are work for peace education.
12. ACTIVITIES FOR EDUCATION FOR PEACE IN THE SCHOOL
• Student can develop skills for peace making by including peace
issues in dibet,seminar and audio visual shows.
• Participation children in role plays, dramas,composing peace
poem,peace song etc.
• Participation in various day observation internationally.
• Religious festival and national days could be celebrated in the
school and in the neighbourhood.
