3. INTRODUCTION
IT @ school projectisthe Technologyarmof the general EducationDepartmentof
Governmentof Kerala,whichwassetupinthe year2000 for empoweringthe State School populace
b y impartinginformation CommunicationTechnology(ICT)enablededucationfromthe grassroot
level.Since itsinceptionthe projecthasachievedseveral milestonesinimplementingICTenabled
educationinover12000 schoolsinthe State includingenhancingthe intellectual productivityof
teachersandthe CurriculumComprehensionof students.The backbone of the projectisitsstrong
networkof 200 Master Trainersand 5600 School IT Coordinators(SITs) inthe state whoare
handpickedSchool teacherswhoare selectedbasedontheirinterestinlearningandteachingICT
enablededucation.Throughelaborativecapacitybuildingprocessthe projectaimstoempowerthe
existingteachersinschoolstouse the variousfacetsof InformationandCommunicationTechnology
as an educational tool.Asondate as manyas 2 lakhteachershave beengiventrainingsaspartof
the projectinitiatives.The initial yearsof the projectwasfocusedmore towardsimpartingvariousIT
basedtrainingprogrammesbasedonITand now the scope haselaboratedtoenable themtohandle
theirsubjectasa tool.
The projecthasprovidedBroadbandinternetconnectivitytoall Schoolsanddetailedusage
normswere alsoissuedtoall Schoolsto ensure safe andsecure browsinglaptopsandMultimedia
projectorswere suppliedtoall schoolsshiftingthe mere ITlabbasedtrainingstothe classrooms.
Hardware clinicswere conductedinall schoolstorepairor upgrade damagedcomputersatschools.
In ContentDevelopmentThe Free OS,IT@School GNU/Linux isbundle withseveral educational
softwareslike Dr geo,Kasmol,R-Techlab,GeogebraChemtool,Kalcium.

Today,as a resultof the variousinitiative oIT@ School projecteverystudentsstudyinginthe
GovernmentSchoolsinthe State enjoysthe mostof the educational facilitiesirrespective of his/her
background.Itis a fact that the GovernmentSchoolsinthe State hasthe state of art ICT equipments
beenusedwhichare unavailableinmostaidedorunaidedschools.Moreoverthe teachersin
GovernmentSchoolsare well trainedtouse these equipmentstoitsmaximumeffectiveness.The
projectworksentirelyonFOSSanditis simultaneousdeploymentof FOSSbasedICTeducationinthe
world.The combinationof the featuresof the integratedmodel followedbyit@ School programme
can be summarizedasintegratingICTwithregularschool processinvestinginteachercapacity
building,movingbeyondcomputerliteracytocompaidedlearninganduse of FOSSplatform.
The IT @ School projectisan informationtechnologyproject underthe Departmentof General
Education,Governmentof KeralainIndialaunchedin2001 the projecthasremodeledconventional
teachingmethodologiesinclassroomthroughthe use oIT.

4. The projectbeingimplementedinover12000 schoolsinthe State of Keralaandalso inschools
inMahe, LakshadweepandMiddle eastwhichfollow the State syllabus.Anestimated5million
studentsand200000 teachersare nowpart of thisprojectwhichhasa networkof 160 Master
Trainersand 5600 school IT Co-ordinatorsState wide whoare school teachersthemselves.The
projectalsoconductsspecializedtrainingforvisuallychallengedteachersinthe state.The project
functionsonfree software platform.

IT @ School isthe nodal agencyfor implementingEDUSATnetworkandrunson exlusive
channel foreducationcalledVICTERS(Versatile ICTEnabledResource forstudentswhichisnow
airedfor17 hoursa day-From6 am to 11 pm.India’sepochmakingfirstbroadbandnetworkon
EDUSAT FOR SHOOLS,VICTERSinauguratedbyAPJAbdul Kalamthe Presidentof Idiaon28th July
2005 inThiruvananthapuram.VICTERSoffersinteractive virtual classroomsthatenable the school
studentsaswell asthe teachersdirectlycommunicate withthe subjectexpertsandeducationists.It
alsoensuresthe disseminationof highqualityeducationtothe studentsandteachersfromthe
original source variousprogrammestelecastthroughVICTERSare asfollows.

PUBLIC AWARENESSPROGRAMME
The projectalsoengagedinorganizingstate awarenesscampaign,exposingthe everydaycomputer
userto the possibilitiesandadvantagesof usingLinux basedsoftware.Resource personsof the IT@
School Projectinthese sessions,demonstrate how there isfree software alternative toeachand
everycomputerapplicationthatanaverage userrequiresona dailybasis.
E-GOVERNANCE

6. IT @ School projectby implementedseveral E-Governance initiativesinthe State.The majore-
governance initiativesare the Single Window admissionsystemforPlusOne admissionsandthe
Online transferandpostingof technical assistance toteachers.Some of the othere-governance
initiativesof the projectincludethe Noonmeal distributionComputerizationYouthFestival
Software,pre metricscholarshiponlineCentralizedOnline TextbookIntendSystemImplementation
of SPARKwithinGeneral EducationDepartment,Total Physical FitnessProgramme Software etc.
CONCLUSION
National e-governance Awardforthe BestProjectin2005, E-Idiaaward2008-9. The
importance of technologyinSchoolsissoevidentinthe 21st Centurystudentswhoare not
computersavvywill struggle intheirfuture professionsasmostjobsrequire some type of computer
work.

7. In the overviewof TechnologyandEducation Reformonthe Ed-govWebsite researches
reportedthatdo be effective,technologyandteachersmustworktogethertoprovide challenging
learningopportunities.Technologycanbecome the catalystchange tohelpstudentstouse higher
orderthinkingskills.
