Everyone needs a place to escape the everyday complications of life. Life has its ups and downs and
we all learn to deal with them in different ways. Some people use exercise to release stress while
others find places to hide from the stress for short periods of time.
I found a place of relaxation hundreds of feet above everyone looking down. Right outside of town
there is a cliff that overlooks the downtown area. There I feel as though I am above everyone and
nothing could touch me. I feel comfort just knowing I can observe thousands of people below me,

I believe we both developed a better understanding not only of each other, but of others as well. We
could have spent hours just talking, laughing, and really feeling alive. What we really found
hilarious and surprising was that Dubuque actually looked absolutely immaculate from such a
height. We would never have guessed the difference in appearance just by looking downward on the
city.
One of the first times my friend and I explored the cliff she found a ragged looking envelope with a
dated letter of desperation in it. It was addressed to Whom it May Concern, and its contents were
packed with problems, dreams, answers, and lies in a sing song pattern. We had to read it a couple of
times to fully consume the poetry and figure out the words that were erased from the still damp
paper. About three pages the poet went on about life in general. It really touched the both of us and
after that, we began to bring our poetry to the cliff and read aloud some of our thoughts. We never
did find out who the author of the poetic letter was, however, it gave us both the feeling of new
hope. I found it very refreshing to know that some people face life's obstacles in such a creative way.
The way I see it and I think the way the author of the poem sees it, is that when in nature, and
especially looking down upon the world, there is a distance you begin to take on from that world,

I was raised in a Christian home and taught that the Bible is the only truth, "The Word of God." I
was encouraged to not put my trust in men, because men will always make mistakes, but trust in
God, because he is perfect. I solemnly believed that in order to trust in God, I had to obey the Bible.
When I was 18 years old, I became a volunteer translator for a non–denominational American
religious organization in Brazil. During that time, I visited hundreds of churches in many Brazilian
states. American missionaries founded most of the churches in Brazil. During my first training, I
was directed not to translate or mention anything about controversial issues, because it could cause
conflict with the denomination's teachings. Over the years I started to question: why are there so
many denominations? Why are all these churches following the same Bible but cannot agree with
each other? Why are there so many divisions when the Bible teaches unity?
Christians follow the Bible. Christianity is the most popular, and the most followed religion in the
world as it is practiced by at least 33.39% of the world's population (Central Intelligence Agency).

The One Child Policy
China has had the new population control for almost 36 years, composed by the one–child policy
and prohibited excess reproduction. The birth control plan has received praise on reducing the
population, but also received criticism over the late 20th century. In 1979, couples were forced to
pledge not to give second birth or bear any more children (Feng, 2014). From 1979 to 2015, while
the population growth rate has reduced substantially, this implementation has been tremendously
restructured how Chinese families value family structure, child preferences, marriage, parenting,
living arrangements, and eldercare. This one child policy has transformed into a problematic system
for the Chinese family to maintain their traditional value, and also introduced new problems to the
family.
Family Size and Structure
As an immediate outcome of the one child policy effective on 1979, the fertility rate has cut more
than 50% of its total fertility rate in 1970, six births, to 2.3 births by 1980 (Coale & Chen, 1987). A
survey data of 1,293 families in Hubei Province has shown 80 percent of their family size were
three, and out of all the three–member families, they were all only–child families (Feng, 2014). This
new family structure was very different from the baby boomers generation (the parent), and both

Childhood Isolation And Its Effects On Children
Being an only child, I have always wondered if I was affected by childhood isolation. I consider
myself to be quite shy and quiet which got me thinking, has childhood isolation shaped me to be this
way? From what I know, childhood isolation has many long–term affects on children such as
shyness, depression, and can make a person antisocial. "How has being only child effected me", is
my primary question. From this question I hope to learn the different aspects of childhood isolation,
like what does it really mean to be isolated, does it have different effects on people, and if so why?
By answering these questions, I can discover if I experienced isolation in my childhood and how it
might have impacted me physically, mentally, psychologically, and socially. I started my research by

Locke And John Locke : The Concept Of Personal Identity
The concept of personal identity examines what makes a person at one time identical with a person
at another. Many philosophers believe we are always changing and therefore, we cannot have a
persisting identity if we are different from one moment to the next. However, many philosophers
believe there is some important feature that determines a person's identity and keeps it persistent.
For John Locke, this important feature is memory, and I agree. Memory is the most important
feature in determining a person's identity as memory is a necessary and sufficient condition of
personal identity.
John Locke believes that A is identical with B, if and only if, A remembers the thoughts, feelings,
and actions had or done by B. This shows that the important feature, memory, is linking a person
from the beginning of their life to the end of their life. Locke's memory theory would look
something like this: The self changes over time, so it may seem like personal identity changes too.
However, even if you are changing, you are still retaining past memories. Therefore, if you can
retain memories, memories are the link between you and an earlier you, so personal identity persists
over time. So, memory is the necessary and sufficient condition of personal identity. Locke's theory
says that we continuously exist and consciousness, or memory, is the link that informs you of the
past, therefore memory is the necessary condition of personal identity.
Many people, such as Thomas Reid, disagree with Locke's memory theory. Reid's most famous
objection has become known as the brave officer objection. He introduces three scenarios or events.
The first event was a boy being flogged in childhood (A), the second event was a brave officer
stealing the enemy's standard (B), and the third was a general being praised (C). Reid gives us his
objection to Locke in the following scenario: If the general being praised remembers being a brave
officer stealing the enemy's standard, and the brave officer remembers being flogged as a child, then
the general must remember being flogged as a child. However, the general has no recollection of
being flogged as a child, so it seems that all three are not identical with one another. This cannot be

with the example that if one was to undergo a brain transplant, "your memories and other mental

even though given the conclusion form the first example this body now contains a different person.
Given person A's emotive response, it would perhaps appear that, despite the lack of psychological
continuity, the A–body–person may in fact still be person A; therefore, psychological continuity may

The order in which a person is born into their family plays substantial role in the individual's
development of personality. Birth order is believed to influence many aspects of one's personality.
The familial atmosphere is the first group experience a child has and the child's role in their family
influences the development of the child's individual personality traits. In families, children learn
what is valuable and meaningful to their parents and siblings and they compete with their siblings
for various roles before they find their personal niche in the family (Stewart et al., 2001). As

Alfred Adler was most famous for his perspective on how the development as a person based on
your birth is progressed. He believes that each family is different and that his birth order scale just
happens to be a possible tool to help people understand the general roles of children. Even though
Adler states the types of position you were born are important, he also describes his birth order scale
as "it is not birth order itself that accounts for differences among siblings, but the psychological

campaigns in the world, receiving both praise and sharp evaluation over the past quarter of a

If there is one thing I have noticed during my, admittedly, short sixteen years, it is the racial

listened to countless conversations where people would nonchalantly insult their own culture and

absolve a wrongdoer from blame. It is interesting to say in the least. What are they saying that is
wrong? Are we wrong to have been forcefully and unknowingly assimilated into Western culture? I

As Shirley Manson, singer/songwriter, once said, "I was a redhead and a middle child; both can
make you feel excluded. It's like fighting to be included, in the swim of things. After a while you
start to develop a bit of a victim mentality, which isn't great for a happy life." Despite being an only
child, this book taught me something about what it feels like to be a middle child, and all of the
responsibilities they are forced to take on. First Impressions is a short, good book that teaches a
valuable life lesson that holds true even for today's teenager: Living with siblings isn't always easy,

Whether it 's noticeable or not, the way in which siblings are born can have massive impacts on their
lives. Many characteristics set aside by the concept of birth order are known to us already, such as a

How To The Marshall M. Fredericks Sculpture Museum
I went to the Marshall M. Fredericks Sculpture Museum for my art experience project. I was
impressed with the amount of statues I was able to see in one place. A majority of them seem to
have been created and donated by the Fredericks family themselves. As I said before the amount of
statues in this little space is impressive, however my first impression is the feeling of
claustrophobia.
The statues are packed in fairly tight and the space overall doesn't seem to be well utilized. The
room it was in did however provide an ample amount of natural light from the large windowed wall
to the north. This coupled with the recessed lighting did a good job of lighting the statues facing the
northern wall. Unfortunately though, some of the statues are facing the southern wall and lose a little
detail to not being as well lit from only the recessed lighting. The contrast between well–lit and
dimly–lit does lend to contrast in light and shadow for the statues facing the east and west walls. The
contours of these statues are much more defined because of the line of contrast so they seem to draw
me in the most. I also get this cold feeling, even though the floors are more of a warm/neutral color.
I believe this is due to the lack of a large amount of the statues not being colored at all. The few that
are colored are just antiqued bronze so they are mostly that powder blue/green color. The lack of
color though, I feel, is intended to make a point.

Growing up with siblings has become a social norm among American families. According to the
2009 census, seventy– eight percent of children have at least one sibling living in the same
household as them, whether that be half siblings, or fully biological. With this statistic it raises
questions as to the effects of having siblings and not having siblings. In most situations having
siblings is deemed positive, as an encourager of beneficial behaviors or attitudes. As for not having
siblings the effects are long lasting, that can affect relationships with peers and others.
Having siblings can have a host of effects for an individual. As a sibling myself I am able to attest to
most of these. As far as behaviors are concerned having a close relationship with your sibling or
siblings can have either positive or negative effects dependent on the behavior exhibited. For
example a study in "Big Sibling's Big Influence: Some Behaviors Run in the Family", describes how
an older sibling has more influence on a younger sibling than a parental figure does. Smoking was
examined in one of the studies, where if the older sibling smokes, the younger sibling is twenty–five

Anand Smilansky : A Developmental Theorist Who Has On...
Sara Smilansky is a Developmental Theorist who has identified four types of play: Functional play,
Constructive play, Dramatic play, and games with rules. Smilansky says that Dramatic play is the
most mature type of play because this is the time where children start to understand their
surroundings and imitate what they see others doing. The research on play focused on sociodramatic
play and the impact it has on children's learning. In Smilansky's book 'The Effects of Sociodramatic
play on Disadvantaged Preschool Children', she says that "...a form of voluntary social play activity
in which preschool children participate". Sociodramatic play coincides with dramatic play where
children engage in a social setting. Sociodramatic play includes two elements: imitative and

In a research conducted by Roberts and Blanton, they found out that the number of families in the
U.S. having only child are getting higher compared to the past generations having many children.

He was simply apprehended based upon the color of his skin and he was then convicted through an
unjust trial where the jury apparently could not find any reason to doubt his guilt, even though he
had an alibi and witnesses to his whereabouts at the time of the crime. The definition I have come to

The play Only Drunks and Children Tell the Truth is a historically influenced tale that focuses on
themes of separated families and the mending of broken bonds. Along with author: Drew Taylor's
Ojibwe heritage, the Sixties Scoop was the historical event that inspired the play. The characters in
the play are directly influenced by the Sixties Scoop which is the heart of the conflict between
Janice(Grace) and Barb. Although unconventional, Grace's random visit results in various

My mother was consumed by substance abuse problems for as long as I knew her, Dad never had
those problems, he never smoked, only drank socially. More specifically, after my mom's death, he

and acting out more. Looking back, he must have had someone watching her, he always knew what
was going in and when he came home there was hell to pay.
Since he made all the major decisions, a pattern of "waiting until your dad comes home" began. It
was along about this time that our house burned down. Because he had bought it and remodeled it
for her, customizing the kitchen to accommodate her 4'11 stature. I think he felt that she was
disrespecting him.

her family and given to a white family during the sixties scoop. She is hesitant to acknowledge her
birth family due to fear of it opening up old wounds. This would be a counterproductive approach to

I understand why Tam would think that one–child created selfish kids, I acknowledge that some of
them did have mental or behavior problem but it is only a small part of the population. Above all I
think one–child policy is a great strategy to control the population from getting too huge.
In the next section Tam inferred to a psychiatrist Dr. Cui, he suggested that there are irremediable
character defects among the new one–child generation. Apparently, Cui suggested that a whole
generation born after 1978 has developed a large number of mental and behavior problems and has
significantly affected population quality. In my point of view, a child spoiled by their own parent

history of depression and frustration of patients who were only child. He also gave some

In an interview with an renowned psychiatrist, it was found out that many children comes to pay
visit to psychiatrists for depression related problem. A number of those patients complains that they
are suffering from depression due to some family problems. Couple of them are only child in the
family and they feel a huge frustration due to family's high expectations. Many young kids are also
found to pretend to remain sick during morning time in order to make excuse for not going to
school. When they are talked to alone with this doctor, they admitted that due to the fear of their
parents they pretend to get sick. Some of the parents almost orders their child to get the first position
in everything by hook or by crook. Even to ensure that, they snatch away the play time from this
children's life. Doctor suggested the parents of the only child to be more resoanable and give them
proper support and space to grow up in a healthy mental state.
