prepare for edit
1. Unit 16.2prepare for editing
After I had collected all of my footage, I had to edit it into sequence but there were some
processes in which I had to undergo before I could begin editing my footage together. To begin
with I created a bin for each of the scenesin my one-minute short film but since it was only one
minute it only had one scene and therefore I only created one bin and named it ‘Crime scene.’
This is my bin:
This bin would ensure that I knew where to find what footage for whatever scene in which I was
editing as not all of the footage would have beenshot at the same time as eachother and
looking through everythingwould waste time, especially if the production was a bigger one
producing a feature film.
I would then have to view all of my rushes and put them into the correct bins but since I only had
one, I just imported them into my ‘crime scene’ bin so I would be able to find them later on when
I was editing.
Next,I had to watch all of my rushes and log them. I renamed them, the shot type and whether
or not they were good or bad, if I had more than one scene thenI would have put the scene
number as well. Shots were generally labelled as bad if there was some kind of positioning, acting
or movementproblem. For example, one of the shots breaks continuity so it was labelled as bad
while another one was of someone opening a letter but they struggled to do so which lead to it
being labelled as bad. This would also save time as I would easily be able to tell if a shot was
good or bad and where it was in the sequence, this would mean I wasn’t wasting time by re-
watching my rushes wheneverI neededto add in a new piece of footage. These are all of my
footage and the names in which I logged them.
All of this preparation before the edit is very important before editing. This is because all of it
helps to keep the footage all organised and together, therefore saving time when it comesto the
editing proccess. It is important to save time as it meansaving money because if time is wasted
money will have to be paid on editing facilities and editors in a higher budget film production. In a
2. low bidget film like this one, moneycant be wasted on time because it will mean limiting the
other funds and therefore lowering the quality of the movie.
This kind of time wasting can also lead the film into missing important deadlines. It is important
to hit deadlines as in the filming industry it can lead to job losses and falure to meet deadlines can
lead to falure of the project and more money spent on facilities.
When logging my shots, I notced that a lot of the shots had something wrong with them.As you
can see by my screengrab, one flaw was the lighting of the shots which varied due to the fact
that we filmed over more than one day. These shots, however, I did not log as bad as they had a
lot of potencial and were generally good. To combat the lighting issue, whenediting I matched
the colour grading which meant that all of the footage that was to light would be able to be used
after all.
After this, I went ahead and editedmy sequence. Before editing the sequence, for the same
purpose of saving time, money and trying to meetdeadlines, I gave my self some soft deadlines.
For example,I dedicated my first hour of time to prepare for editing. I then set a rough cut
deadline on the 18th
march which was when the rough cut would have to be finished. This meant
that if all else failed I would have the basics of the story line. I then had an actual deadline of 25th
march but I would set my soft deadline for the 23rd
of march so that I knew everything would be
done on time. After I had edited it, I neededto export an Editing DecsionList.
This is a screenshot of my edit decsion list
This piece of documentation a document that gives all of the properties my edit. It is used to
transport the project to anywhere via the web. This can often be used in film production so send
things suchas ruff cuts to the editor so that he can finish the final cut. This is important as it can
3. save a lot of time transporting material. It can also mean that editors can work from home saving
them a lot of time and energy. On a whole it helps to increase the speed and price of production.
