Question 1
1. Question 1:
In what way does your media product
use, develop or challenge forms and
conventions of real media products?
2. After I did my research I became familiar with
some conventions that are used in real life
media products. To achieve a high standard in
my music video I did follow certain conventions
to make it look professional although I did
challenge some forms.
3. It is normal for music videos to be 3-4 minutes
long, the music video I created was 3:34 minutes
so I have kept within the normal time limit of a
music video, due to the fact the original sound
clip was close to 5 minutes long, I cut the start
and the end of the song off as i felt that was too
long and may start to get quite boring for the
audience watching.
4. After watching many videos it's clear that most
music videos follow the Todorov theory. This
isn't something I have used in my video, perhaps
because it's a performance based video.
5.
6. Throughout the video I used different shots,
close ups, media close ups and long shots. I did
this because it makes the video look more
professional and allows the audience to see the
artist from all different angels, so they are able
to see body language and facial expressions; as
it's an emotional song I felt it only right to let
the audience see the raw emotion from the
artist.
7. The mise en scene of the video had a pop rock feel to it,
due to the make up and outfit choices, I decided to go for
this look as the genre of song is pop rock. As well as the
artist clearly showing she is an independent women as
she doesn't overalls sexualise herself and is clearly
portraying herself to be a serious artist. This goes against
certain stereotypes of female artist such as Miley Cyrus,
Britney Spears and Rihanna which do use their sexuality
to get sales, the artist isn't following this trend. Although
as she's clearly heartbroken over a male, it does follow
the stereotype that males have more power, even though
the artist is being strong her ex boyfriend clearly has
some hold over, thus having the power.
8. Looking at similar songs to the one I choose on
YouTube and looking at the music videos I saw that
a lot of them were using a performance based
video, this is why I decision to follow this
convention. With a ballad song I feel it more
appropriate to let the audience connect with the
artists performance and for them not to be
distracted by a narrative. As the lyrics are personal
to the artist, it better that the audience can get the
chance to truly hear the lyrics while enjoying a
performance given by the artist.
9. When editing my video I used longer cuts this
was because it went with the beat of the song,
after looking at different videos this is
something all of them do, because if they don't
the music video just wouldn't fit in with the
song. This was a convention I made sure I stuck
to and spent time planning where each clip
would go and for how long it would be played.
10. While adding effects and brightness I didn't
want to make the video very bright as I felt the
video should have a certain dark/grainy look to
it. Looking at Avril Lavigne's videos who is within
the same genre she did the same thing, so using
her videos as inspiration I decided to add it for
more effect.
