R&B music originated in the 1940s and combines elements of rhythm and blues, soul, funk, pop, hip hop and dance. Rhythm and blues, often abbreviated to R&B or RnB, is a genre of popular African-American
music that originated in the 1940s.
RnB is often combined with elements of rhythm and blues, soul, funk, pop, hip hop and dance.
After watching RnB music videos and listening to artists such as Beyoncé, Rihanna and Mariah
Carey who are the ideal RnB artists especially Beyoncé and Mariah Carey as they are both
often known as the queen of RnB inspired me to do an RnB music, I am also a big fan of this
genre.
3. Research:
Stereotypically the fashion of RnB for men is:
Topless- artists such as Chris Brown and Trey Songz is usually
pictured in his videos as well as magazine covers with very minimal
clothes on; because their target audience is women.
Tattoos- a lot of RnB male artists have a huge amount of tattoos the
majority of the time they are on their chest.
Jewellery- RnB stars wear subtle jewellery such as a watch, chain,
earring- whereas, in hip hop the wear huge sum of jewellery such as
big chains.
The fashion of RnB for women:
Minimal clothing- women in RnB usually have very little clothing
on. Women are objectified in RnB due to the fact that their target
audience are male
Hair and makeup- their hair is always styled in a very dramatic and
eye catching. Their makeup is also very bold and defined, especially
their eyes with the winged eyeliner which makes their eyes stand out
and also they use very dark eye shadows to get that smoky eye
effect witch again makes their eyes stand out. They add the gold eye
shadow which makes their eyes alluring. To show power some
females wear red lipstick in their music magazine and also in a
photo-shoot which makes them look seductive.
Jewellery- Big earrings and sometimes big necklace which is
unusual but when they do wear big necklaces they are breaking
gender stereotypes because it is usually men artists who wear big
chains.
4. Target Audience Profile:
The majority of RnB fans are usually teenagers and young adults- from the age of
16 to 35 due to the explicit lyrics however, females are more attracted to RnB as
RnB female artists stereotypically sing songs about love and being heartbroken-
this is something that greatly appeals to teenage girls and young adults as females,
especially teenagers are stereotypically known for looking for love. The fast paced
RnB songs (HipHop) involves a lot of fashion and the synergy of music and also
fashion is something that also attracts females.
The target audience of RnB - males is also majorly made up of females because
they are portrayed in a very sexual way, through their nudity and lyrics. In most
RnB/ Hiphop songs, women are objectified. Some males are attracted to the
jewellery, naked women and deception of wealth of the music videos as it is
something they do not see on a daily basis. The music videos of RnB consists of
cars, mansions, money and women. The videos are very ambitious.
The target audience are mainly from a black ethnic background.
