Introduction
This project aims to provide us with an opportunity to develop knowledge
towards building services systems to be applied into proposing an
appropriate solution for the building services for our individual Architecture
Design Studio IV building design.
We this project, we are to demonstrate an understanding of the applicability
of specific building services systems in the design in response to practical
considerations as well on our ability to resolve issues that arise from each
building service system.
My building is a double storey building. The spaces are listed as followed.
Ground Floor Level:-
i) Lobby
ii) Library
iii) Play / Reading Area
iv) Outdoor Deck
v) Toilet

Gang Switch Gang Switch contains two or
more distribution points of
electrical system. Functions to
turn electrical appliances on or
off.
Meter Box A meter device that measures
and record the amount of electric
energy used by a unit or an
electrically powered device.
Electrical Distribution Board A panel that distributes electrical
power feed into subsidiary
circuits. A protective fuse or
circuit breaker for each circuit in
a common enclosure is usually
included as well.
13 AMP Power Outlet An electrical device that allows
electrically operated equipment
to be connected to the primary
power supply in a building.
Recessed Down Lights A recessed light is a light fixture
that installed into a hollow
opening in a ceiling and
concentrates the light in a
downward direction as a broad
floodlight or narrow spotlight.
Electrical Services Fixtures
Building Services | Project 2: Building Services Diary
Fluorescent Light A low pressure mercury-vapor
gas-discharge lamp that uses
fluorescence to produce visible
light.
Ceiling Fan A mechanical fan suspended
from the ceiling that uses
hub-mounted rotating paddles to
circulate air.

PREVENTION OFDAMPNESS
Good building design and maintenance need to be taken to prevent
penetration of dampness into the building.
UBBL Section89
CHASE
A chase made in a wall for pipes and other service facilities shall leave the
walls at the back of the chase, with not less than 100mm thick in the external
walls and not less than 100mm thick in party walls and shall not wider than
200mm.
UBBL Section123
PIPES AND SERVICES DUCTS
1. Adequate for the accommodation of pipes, cable or conduits and for
crossings of branches and mains together with support and fixing.
2. Sufficiently large to permit access to cleaning eyes, stop cocks and other
controls there to enable repairs, extensions and modifications to be made to
each or all of the service accommodated.
Water Supply Services
Building Services | Project 2: Building Services Diary
Water Meter A device used to measure the
volume of water used by the
buildings that are supplied with
water by public water supply
system.
Stop Cock Used to control the flow of tap
water in services. It can be found
at the junction of a water main
and the branch leading to an
individual service, also inside the
structure, and are employed
when maintenance or emergency
repairs are conducted.
Gate Valve Gate valves are used to control
and prevent the flow of liquids.
Water Tank A storage unit that stores water
for distribution through a water
supply system
Galvanized Iron Pipe Galvanized Iron Pipe are used for
conveying raw water and
distribution of treated water in
majority or rural water schemes.

Floor Trap A plumbing fixture that is installed
on the floor of a structure for
removing any standing water
near it. The floor around the trap
is also sloped to allow the water
to be directed to the drain.
Man Hole An opening to an underground
utility vault that used to house an
access point for making
connections, inspection,valve
adjustments or performing
maintenance on underground
and buried public utility.
Gully Trap A basin in the ground which
receives wastewater from the
kitchen, bathroom and laundry
before it is emptied into the
sewer. The basin has a water
seal function to prevent foul
odours of the sewer reaching the
surface.
Vent Cowl A cowl is usually hood-shaped
covering connected to the
sanitary services in a building, an
outlet of odors coming from the
system and prevent backflow.

Gutter Drain A rain gutter channel is a
component of water discharge
system from the roof for a
building
Rainwater Downpipe A vertical pipe that directs
rainwater from rain gutter down
to ground level. The water is then
sent to a sewer
Sump A low space that collects
undesirable liquids such as
washed water or chemicalsand
also an infiltration basin that used
to manage surface runoff water
and recharge underground

Conclusion
The process of this journal has helped me in obtaining an
understanding and knowledge based on the building services that is
applied in building designs considerations to help provide a better
proposal for the services intended for the proposed building.
In order to incorporate building services better with the design of the
school, following the uniform building by-laws and restrictions by the
local authorities helped creating a successful building design. There
are several topic in this proposal which comprises of rainwater
harvesting, stormwater management, electrical supply system, water
supply supply system and sewerage management.
The project guided me on how to make use of relevant information
that related to water system, electrical supply system, rainwater
harvesting, stormwater management, sanitary management and also
with better use of drawing conventions for various type of building
services system.

  • 14. Building Services | Project 2: Building Services Diary Conclusion The process of this journal has helped me in obtaining an understanding and knowledge based on the building services that is applied in building designs considerations to help provide a better proposal for the services intended for the proposed building. In order to incorporate building services better with the design of the school, following the uniform building by-laws and restrictions by the local authorities helped creating a successful building design. There are several topic in this proposal which comprises of rainwater harvesting, stormwater management, electrical supply system, water supply supply system and sewerage management. The project guided me on how to make use of relevant information that related to water system, electrical supply system, rainwater harvesting, stormwater management, sanitary management and also with better use of drawing conventions for various type of building services system.
