National Aquaculture Development Authority (NAQDA)
was established in 1999 under the provisions made available
by the National Aquaculture Development Authority Act
(No. 53 of 1998). It is the main state sponsored organization
mandated for the task of development of the aquaculture and
inland fisheries sector in Sri Lanka. Presently, it is coming
under the purview of the Ministry of Fisheries and Aquatic
Resources.
The vision is to be an apex body in the region
responsible for sustainable development and
management of aquaculture and inland fisheries to
ensure food security in order to improve the quality of
life of the people
The mission is to contribute to the improvement of the
socio-economic conditions of rural societies through
alleviation of poverty by increasing freshwater and
brackish water fish production and introducing new
technologies for utilization of aquatic resources for
small, medium and large scale enterprise development.

 Artificial Breeding of Carp species
 Breeding of GIFT Tilapia
 Rearing of Fish
 Feeding of reared species
 Packing and Transporting
 Mature parent fish are injected with spawning inducing
agents
 Without these agents Chinese/ Indian carp will not
spawn in ponds because the external ecological
conditions in the fish ponds cannot satisfy the
reproductive requirements of the brood fish
 Fish are injected with extraneous hormones
* PG
* HCG
* LHRH - A
 Select mature fish
 Inject hormones
 Release to breeding hapa/ spawning tank
 Remove brooders and collect eggs or eggs are stripped
from female fish and artificially fertilized with sperm
 Fertilized eggs are transferred to incubation tank /
hatchery jar
Female
 Smooth pelvic fin
 Bulging soft abdomen
 Swollen, soft, reddish
vent
Male
 Rough pelvic fin
 Milt exuded when
press the abdomen
gently
 We participated in catla catla breeding season on 28.03.2011
 Artificial breeding is a short time work done within 24 hours
 They were selected 12 matured males and 6 matured female
fishes for breeding activity

 There are 2 main divisions of rearing
1. Post Larvae to Fry Rearing
Managed By : Mr. Pathmasiri
2. Fry to Fingerling Rearing
Managed By : Mr. Mangala
 They use eggs to newly hatched post larvae’s. They
give these eggs for 3- 4 days for P/Ls they haven’t
developed mouth particles.
 After the 4 days they give soya milk
 When animals are reached fry level they use prima
fish foods.

02 Fingerlings and advanced
fingerlings
03 Brooders
 NAQDA supply fish seeds for farmers as their
demand
 There are some measuring instruments to count the
number of fish seeds while packing
 They use average value to pack fish seeds and
transport them by vehicles
 10mL ( For P/L measuring )
 15 mL – 1 tb spoon
 60mL – ¼ cup
 80mL – 1/3 cup
 125mL – ½ Cup
 P/L packing to Pollonaruwa (14/03/2011)
 Rohu fry packing to Anuradhapura (15/03/2011)
 Gift Tilapia fry packing to Galnawa (23/03/2011)
 Catla Catla and Grass carp packing (28/03/2011)
 Learnea – Neguan 5 ppm prolong emersion
 Aargulus – Salt bath 30ppt- 10-30 second
 Tricodina – Formalin 15-25 ppm prolong emersion
 Transport facilities to Dambulla centre is vey lack, Labors
face difficulties about day by day transports. So it is necessary
to improve these facilities.
 There is a hostel for trainees but it is with lack facilities so we
faced some difficulties too. So NAQDA must improve
facilities.
 There is a public road within the centre’s land area. It caused
some problems about theft and damaging activities. So they
must remove that public road to outside of the center.
