GIFT Tilapia: a Potential fish for climate smart
aquaculture in meeting fish food, nutritional
and livelihood support

Introduction
• The farming of tilapias, especially of Nile tilapia (Oreochromis niloticus) in its
crudest form is believed to have originated more than 4000 years ago from Egypt.
• The first recorded scientifically oriented culture of tilapia was conducted in Kenya
in 1924 and soon spread to many parts of the world.
• Tilapia, native to Africa and the Middle East and popularly known as “aquatic
chicken”, is widely farmed in about 145 countries worldwide.
• Once considered “a poor man’s fish”, tilapia has emerged from mere obscurity to be
one of the world’s most productive and internationally traded food fish.
• It is a versatile species, being hardy and quick growing, can be farmed in a wide
array of culture environments and systems, ranging from extensive rural subsistence,
low-input pond culture using agriculture by-products to intensive systems such as
recirculating aquaculture systems (RAS), Biofloc systems, raceways and so forth.
• About 70 species of tilapias, of this commercial tilapia production mainly on three
species, Nile tilapia (Oreochromis niloticus), has for many decades been responsible
for the significant increase in global tilapia production from freshwater aquaculture
due to its short generation time, high tolerance to variable water quality and diseases
and ability to grow in diverse farming systems
• The average production growth of farmed tilapia reached 10.1 % between 1999 and
2018 with production increasing from 3.49 million tons in 2010 to 6.03 million tons
in 2018.
• Globally, tilapia is among the most important species produced in aquaculture that
grows a 7% annually 7% and the production of tilapia worldwide has reached the 6
million tons in 2020.

• The development of Genetically Improved Farmed Tilapia (GIFT) –
through traditional selective breeding techniques to improve
commercially important traits – by WorldFish and partners is a
major milestone in the history of not only tilapia aquaculture but
also the aquaculture of tropical finfish as a whole.
• WorldFish estimates that more than 50 percent of global tilapia
production is from GIFT and GIFT-derived strains.
• In India, fish consumption is steadily increasing, and the
government has set a target of achieving annual per capita
consumption of 12 kilograms by 2024-25 against an estimated
consumption of 5.6 kilograms in 2018-19.
• To achieve this goal, the government of India has set a target of
producing 22 million tons of fish by 2024-25 as against a
production of 13.75 million metric tons in 2018-19 – an increase of
about 8 million metric tons – to meet the demand of a growing
population and also increasing per capita consumption of fish.
• Much of the increase in production is projected to come from
inland aquaculture.
• Farming of fish in cages to intensive production systems such as
recirculating aquaculture (RAS) and Biofloc systems, in addition to
traditional pond production systems – an urgent need is felt to
identify a species that is amenable to farming in these varied
systems, besides Pangasius.
• Species for Aquaculture
• Tilapia belongs to the family Cichlidae under order Perciformes.
• The tilapias have recently been classified into three genera, based
on parental incubation of eggs.
• The species of the genera Sarotherodon and Oreochromis are
mouth brooders, while Tilapia incubates eggs in a lake or pond
bottom built-in “nest”.
• There are about 70 species of tilapias, of which nine species are
used in aquaculture worldwide (FAO 2008).
• Important commercial species include: the Mozambique tilapia
(Oreochromis mossambicus), blue tilapia (O. aureus), Nile
tilapia(O. niloticus), Zanzibar tilapia (O. hornorum), and the red
belly tilapia (O. zilli).

• Mono sex culture of tilapia is advantageous because of faster
growth and larger and more uniform size of males.
• The development of Genetically Improved Tilapia (GIFT)
technology is based on traditional selective breeding and is
meant to improve commercially important traits of tropical
farmed fish which is a major milestone in the history of tilapia
aquaculture.
• Through combined selection technology, the GIFT program
achieved 12-17% average genetic gain per generation over
five generations and cumulative increase in growth rate of
85% in O. niloticus (Eknath and Acosta,1998).
• Other varieties like ‘red tilapia’ also hold promise. There is
high potential of export of tilapia to US, Europe and Japan.
Habitat and Biology
• Nile tilapia is a tropical species that prefers to live in shallow water.
• It is an omnivorous grazer that feeds on phytoplankton,
periphyton, aquatic plants, small invertebrates, benthic fauna,
detritus and bacterial films associated with detritus.
• Sexual maturity in ponds is reached at an age of 5-6 months.
• Spawning begins when the water temperature reaches 24°C.
• The female incubates the eggs in her mouth and broods the fry
after hatching until the yolk sac is absorbed.
• Fecundity is proportional to the body weight of the female.
• A 100 g female will produce about 100 eggs per spawn, while a
female weighing 600-1000 g can produce 1000 to 1500 eggs.
• Nile tilapia can live longer than 10 years and reach a weight
exceeding 5 kg.
• Hormonal sex reversal involves the, use of this technique however
has not been fully accepted in some countries due to concerns on
impact on human health. Production of ‘supermales’ through
genetic manipulation could solve this issue.
Tilapia in Indian aquaculture
• In the past, there was a misconception that tilapia is a pest in Indian aquaculture due to the introduction of the
wrong species – Mozambique tilapia – in 1952.
• The culture of this species was met with failure due to its undesirable characteristics and production of small,
low-value fish at harvest. As a result, tilapia farming was banned in 1959.
• With subsequent studies indicating the potential of farming Nile tilapia, the ban was lifted in 2009 and the
government of India formulated guidelines for responsible farming of the species. State governments were
mandated to monitor, control and surveil hatchery, nursery and farming facilities.
• Biosecurity and licensing are the key aspects of the guidelines and the state governments are authorized to issue
licenses and register farms.
• Under the guidelines, some private hatcheries, and companies as well as the Rajiv Gandhi Centre for
Aquaculture (RGCA) were initially allowed to import commercially viable tilapia strains from overseas and set
up multiplication centers and hatcheries in the country.
• In 2019–20, close to 94 million fry was produced by about 11 licensed and more than 25 unauthorized tilapia
hatcheries.
• The major strains produced by licensed hatcheries in India were GIFT, Chitralada and Golden.
• While there is a steady increase in the production of tilapia in states like West Bengal, Maharashtra, Madhya
Pradesh, Chhattisgarh, Bihar, Jharkhand and Kerala, the major hub for commercial aquaculture production in
India, Andhra Pradesh, farms primarily Indian carps.
• Farmers are not keen on tilapia farming in the absence of an assured market for large production.
• Some of the main factors for low production of tilapia in India are the non-availability of quality seeds, lack of
awareness and knowledge of the species among farmers and consumers as well as limited access to markets.
• In 2011, RGCA – under the aegis of the Marine Products Development Authority of India (MPEDA) –
collaborated with WorldFish to establish a satellite breeding program for GIFT.
Guidelines for Responsible Farming of
Tilapia in India
• Monosex population (all male) also could be produced with provision of 17± Methyl testosterone treated feed
for four weeks.
• Only four fish farmer groups, M/s Aresen Bio Tech, A.P, Vijaywada, M/s Ananda Aqua Exports(P) Ltd.,
Bhimavaram, A.P, M/s Indepesca Pvt. Ltd., Mumbai M/s CP Aqua (India) Pvt. Ltd., Chennai, and M/s Rajiv
Gandhi Centre for Aquaculture (RGCA), the R & D arm of the Marine Products Export Development Authority
(MPEDA) are already permitted by Government of India for the seed production and farming of tilapia (Mono
sex and mono culture of Nile/GIFT/golden tilapia) in accordance with the guidelines for the hatchery operation
and farming of tilapia, developed by the Sub-Committee under the National Committee on Introduction of
Exotic Aquatic Species into Indian Waters.
• Farming Systems: Tilapia farming ranges from a rural subsistence (extensive, low input practices, non-
commercial and for household consumption) to a large-scale (capital intensive, commercial purpose and
market driven) level.
• Water-based systems
• Cage farming:
• Cage culture of tilapia avoids problems with over breeding because eggs fall through the cage meshes.
• The other main advantage is that the farmer does not necessarily need to own the water body where the cages
are placed.
• The cages can be made of netting or are sometimes made from bamboo or other locally available materials.
• The fish derive most of their nutrition from the surrounding water; however they may also be fed
supplementary feeds.
• Typical stockingrates are 10 kg/m3 maximum.
• Intensive cage culture with stocking rates of around 25 kg/m3 is also getting popular.
• Average production levels are variable in different systems and countries.
• Under intensified cage culture production levels of 100-305 kg/m3 are reported (Alceste and Jory, 2002, Costa
et al., 2000).
Land-based systems for Tilapia Farming
• Ponds:
• The main advantage of ponds is that fish can be grown very cheaply through fertilization.
• Many different types of ponds are used for tilapia culture.
• The most widespread, but most unproductive are low input ponds with uncontrolled
breeding and irregular harvesting; yields are typically 500-2000 kg/ha/yr of uneven sized
fish.
• If monosex fish are stocked and regular manuring and supplementary feeding is practiced
yields can be up to 8000 kg/ha/yr of even sized fish.
• Polyculture of tilapia with other native fishes in freshwater ponds is also widely integrated
with agriculture and animal farming.
• Intensive tanks:
• Intensive tank culture avoids problems with overbreeding because there is no space for
males to set up territories. It requires a constant supply of water, either gravity fed or
pumped.
• Usual maximum stocking rates in tanks where the water is changed every 1-2 hours would
be around at 25-50 kg/m3.
Husbandry Techniques
• Four hatchery and stocking practices have contributed most
to this change:
● Stocking good species such as Oreochromis niloticus instead of
Oreochromis mossambicus
● Hand sexing of juveniles: There are clear differences between
the sexes in tilapia species, particularly in the form of the
urinogenital opening, fin morphology and adult colouration.
• Skilled hatchery workers can achieve over 95 % male
populations on 5-7 cm fish.
● Hybridization: O. hornorum is the only known species which
consistently produces all male fry when crossed with O.
niloticus or O. mossambicus. The main problem is the
maintenance of the pure lines.
● Hormonal sex reversal: Fry can be collected at the yolk sac or
first feeding stages, no later than one week after released
from the female, and fed with feed containing the sex reversal
hormone.
Guidelines for Tilapia Culture in India
I. Steering Committee
• i. The Ministry of Agriculture (MoA), Govt. of India may constitute a Steering
Committee at National level to oversee and monitor the tilapia seed and grow-out
production.
• This Committee may empower respective State Fisheries Departments for
monitoring, controlling and surveillance (MCS) of Hatchery/Farming (Nursery as
well as Grow-out) facility.
ii. The Steering Committee constituted by the MoA shall recommend standard
guidelines with regard to quarantine measures required for tilapia brood
seed(stock) importation for Hatchery and Breeding Programmes.
iii. This Steering Committee is empowered to modify/revise the guidelines as and
when required.
• The steering committee based on feedback on implementation of guidelines will
give more specific guidelines on vulnerable areas / sanctuaries and permissible
therapeutics.
iv. A Committee constituted by the respective State Government is authorized to call
for details from any Hatchery/Breeding/Nursery/Farm facility registered for tilapia
aquaculture in case of violation of the prescribed guidelines.
v. The Farmers/Entrepreneurs who intend to undertake tilapia
Hatchery/Breeding/Nursery/Grow-out Farming shall register with the respective
State Fisheries Department using the appropriate format prescribed by the
Steering Committee.
II. Culture Systems and Practices
i. Registration: Farmers who intend to take up Tilapia culture shall apply to
the
• State Fisheries Department in the prescribed Proforma (Annexure-I) for
permission.
ii. Location: Farms may be located in areas which are not prone for floods or
in a buffer zone around a declared sanctuary or bio-reserve or other
vulnerable areas in order to avoid escape to the open water bodies.
iii. Type and culture Intensity: Farming of only monosex male/sterile (through
either hormonal manipulation or cross breeding) is permitted.
iv. Area of culture systems: Each Farm should not be less than 1.0 Acre water
spread area. Size of each pond should not be more than 10.0 Acres.
v. Species: Species recommended is Nile Tilapia or improved strains/hybrids
of Tilapia
• vi. Size of the seed to be stocked: Grow-out ponds should be stocked with
sex reversed tilapia (SRT) seed of more than 10 g. 30 Days old sex reversed
tilapia (SRT) to be reared to 10 g size raised in on-farm nurseries or in
registered seed farms.
• vii. Stocking density: Maximum of 5 nos/m2

viii. Bio-security: The approval for farming of tilapia shall be
accorded only to those ponds/farms which could maintain
bio-security of the farm to ensure no escape of the biological
material from the farm to the water source or to any other
source even in situations like flooding.
• Therefore, there should be a standard design specifying the
minimum requirement of bund height water management
systems and other bio-security measures which are
necessary for farming.
• Outlet water from culture ponds must be screened and
treated before releasing into drains/canals/rivers during
culture practice or subsequent to harvesting in order to
prevent escape of eggs into natural water bodies (b) Provision
of Bird scaring device/fencing is mandatory, (c) Bund height
should be high enough to avoid fish escape and (d) sluice
gates must be provided with appropriate mesh size to prevent
escape of fish/eggs/fry.

ix. Cage culture in reservoirs and tanks: Cage culture of tilapia shall
be restricted to those reservoirs which are having already
established stocks of tilapia.
• Before initiation of such farming, assessment studies should be
carried out by respective State Fisheries Departments in order to
ascertain the presence of tilapia population in such reservoirs.
• Cage area in the reservoir should not exceed 1% of effective water
area (EWA).
• Stocking size in cages must be more than 50 g weight.
• Accordingly, cage net should have appropriate mesh size.
• Use of formulated floating pellet feed with minimum protein
content of 25% is encouraged in cage culture.
x. Intensive tilapia culture: Farms intending to undertake
recirculatory farming practice should register with state fisheries
departments with a stocking density of not more than 150 nos/m3
with provision of floating feeds.
• Biosecurity measures followed in this case must conform to the
standards specified for Grow-out farms
III. Establishment of Hatchery
• Entrepreneurs who intend to establish tilapia seed hatcheries have to obtain approval from
steering committee and also to be registered with State Fisheries Departments.
• Hatcheries shall obtain brood stock from the approved foreign/Indian companies. Hatcheries
shall sell seed only to the registered nurseries/farms.
IV. Seed Production of Tilapia
i. The Steering Committee will recommend establishment of tilapia National Breeding
Programme (tNBP) for tilapia through ICAR fisheries research institutes and other similar
agencies.
ii. The steering committee shall identify and approve the Foreign/Indian companies who are
eligible to supply brood seed (stock) to commercial hatcheries.
iii. The steering committee shall inspect and approve the design and lay-out of hatchery
including quarantine facility. Quarantine of imported seed for 21 days is necessary to avoid
any incidence of disease outbreak.
• Imported seed stock may also need to be quarantined with companion species in order to
assess susceptibility/resistance against exotic pathogens.
iv. Production of mono-sex male tilapia by the hatcheries should conform to the protocols
specified under the guidelines.
v. Tilapia breeding programme with an objective of selective breeding for genetic improvement
in subsequent generations involving geneticist should be encouraged to avoid future
catastrophe due to inbreeding.
vi. Sex reversal using non-hormonal techniques/technology should be encouraged.
V. Seed Nurseries
• Nurseries which are intending to raise seed (Seed Farms) for tilapia culture have to be
registered with State Fisheries Departments following the guidelines available for Grow-out
farms.
• Nurseries should procure sex reversed tilapia (SRT) seed only from the registered hatcheries.
VI. Health Monitoring
• Health of the farm stock may be checked periodically and in case of disease incidence,
permissible therapeutics may only be used judiciously.
VII. Record Keeping
• Registers should be maintained pond wise on day to day management of the farm indicating
the details of stocking, source of seed, inputs, sampling details, water quality details, health,
growth etc. The records should be produced at the time of inspection by the concerned
fisheries authorities.
VIII. Harvesting
• Feeding should be suspended one/two days prior to harvest.
• Harvesting may be done using drag nets or any other quick harvesting methods.
IX. Post-Harvest and Transport
• Harvested fish should be immediately iced and transported for domestic markets/processing
plants.
• Adequate infrastructure facilities for processing of tilapia in value added items should be
encouraged
XII. Evaluation and Impact Assessment
i. Evaluate the effectiveness of preventive steps taken up to prevent escape of tilapia
from ponds and cages and improve them
ii. Impact of escapees on ecosystem and how they would modify the invasive capacity
of existing tilapia species to be determined.
XIII. Further Technical Suggestions
i. Fertilization: Fertilization in pond culture using organic manures can be done
depending on the nutrient status of the soil as and when required.
ii. Types of feeds: Formulated floating pellet feed/farm made pellet feed with
minimum protein content of 20%
iii. Feed storage: Proper feed storage facility should be provided at the farm site with
proper ventilation and management of humidity.
• The feed should be stacked on raised wooden platforms without touching the walls
to avoid mold.
• The feed should be used within three months from the date of production.
iv. Harvesting: Feeding should be suspended one/two days prior to harvest.
Harvesting may be done using drag nets or any other quick harvesting methods.
v. Post-harvest and transport: Harvested fish should be immediately iced and
transported for domestic markets/processing plants.
• Adequate infrastructure facilities for processing of tilapia in value added items
should be encouraged.

Pre-stocking management
• Pre-stocking management aims to properly prepare pond to
remove the causes of poor survival, unsatisfactory growth,
etc., and ensure ready availability of natural food in sufficient
quantity and quality for seed/fry/ fingerlings to be stocked.
• Pre-stocking part of the management involves the following
sequential measures.
• Pond Drying In the course of harvesting ponds, water is
drained; pond bottom should be exposed to bright sun for
about 15-20 days till it cracks.
• It is a general rule that ponds should remain as dry as possible
until the next production season.
• Cleaning and cultivation of pond bottom Removing objects,
vegetation and aquatic weeds is the second step of pond
preparation.
• Passing of dry pond bottom with a ploughing will ensure
healthier life of benthos.
Eradication of unwanted fish and disinfection of pond bottom
• The predatory or invasive fishes like directly
pray upon the juveniles (young once of the
fish) and compete with GIFT tilapia for food,
space and oxygen.
• Prior to stocking of desirable species utmost
care shall be taken for complete eradication of
undesirable species which shall be done by
repeated netting of pond or using fish toxicant
(Mahua Oil Cake), Liming Quick lime at the rate
of 200 kg/ha is recommended for accelerating
the mineralization of organic matter and act as
prophylactic measure.
• It acts as buffer against pH changes and it
increases the availability of carbon for
photosynthesis
• It is essential nutrient play a vital role in the
productivity of the pond where fish prefer
natural fish food is expected.
• Organic manure i.e. cattle dung @ 1000 kg/ha
is generally applied in 4 equal installments.
Inorganic fertilizers like Urea @ 25
kg/ha/month and single super phosphate 20
kg/ha/month. Manuring and fertilization
should be applied at monthly intervals.
Stocking Management

• Acclimatization and Stocking Before
stocking fish for grow-out into a
pond, the number of fish, the
average individual weight and the
total quantity must be estimated.
• The fish from the polybags /
transport tanks are to be gradually
acclimatized to the water quality
parameters in the pond before
release into the open ponds or
nursery hapas in the ponds.
• Initial biomass calculation followed
by periodic checks at regular
intervals during the culture period
will allow reliable projections on
biomass and survival rates.
Post - stocking Management
• Post-stocking management involves maintenance of
pond environment and harnessing the pond
productivity in the form of natural fish food,
maintaining supplementary feeding and health care.
• As per guideline, could maintain bio-security of the
farm to ensure no escape of the seed or Broodstock
and continuous.
• Supplementary Feeding Soon after stocking, the fish
start grazing natural food available in the pond
irrespective of their stage of life cycle.
• Seed feeds voraciously on plankton (if available).
• GIFT tilapia seeds need more food than the naturally
available food in the fish pond. Artificial food in
floating form is useful for their growth.
• Tilapia eats almost all types of supplements, but
responds very well to artificial foods.
• Guideline stated that formulated standardized
certified floating pellet feed/farm made pellet feed
with minimum protein content of 20% should be used.
• Care should be taken to ensure that the water quality
of the pond does not deteriorate due to excessive
feeding.
• However, feeding has to be at the discretion of the
pond manager, with feed consumption, the pond
conditions and the general environmental conditions
be considered before deciding on the quantity of feed
to be provided.
Water Quality Management
Regular Sampling and Fish Health
Management
• Periodic sampling of fish is necessary to
observe the growth and health status of
the production biomass.
• Fishes should be sampled once in every
15 days to check the health and growth.
• The body surface should be checked for
presence parasites if any.
• If there is mass mortality occurred,
immediately check the water parameter
and other sign of infection.
• The flow of pesticide-rich water from
crop fields or the release of hazardous
industrial waste, etc. may cause a mass
mortality of fish in a farm pond.
• Harvesting:
• Tilapia usually weighs 500 to 600 gm in
5-6 months after stocking.
• The periodical harvesting is done
subsequently with dragnet of suitable
mesh size and final harvesting is carried
out by completely draining the pond.

Stocking: The size of the farm pond and the seed
size determine the stocking density. In general, it is
advised to stock 15000–20000 GIFT per acre, with
an average size of 0.20–0.30 gram

AN ECONOMIC EVALUATION OF BIOFLOC & Silpaulin tank culture of GIFT Tilapia
(Ref: Soorya Gopan et al.2022)
• The culture system included five Biofloc tanks and one
silpaulin tank culture (STC) having 25, 000 L each.
• The GIFT tilapia were stocked at 1250 fingerlings per tank.
• The study was carried out for a year, and two cycles (each
cycle of five months) were carried out.
• At the end of the trial, fish attained an average body weight
of 450.65 ± 24.20 g in biofloc units, which was 94% higher
compared to STC tanks (232.25 ± 13.40).
• The mean specific growth rate (SGR) was higher in biofloc
system (0.66 ± 0.02) than the STC (0.35 ± 0.04).
• The total harvest weight in biofloc and STC systems were
578 kg and 260 kg, respectively.
• The net profit obtained ranged from Rs. 92,500 – 1,06,500
and Rs. 4650 in biofloc system and STC.
• The biofloc system yielded a higher benefit: cost (B.C.) ratio
(2.03-2.17) and rate of return (108.05-123.27) compared to
STC.
• The biofloc fish farming also showed a higher economic
viability (B:C ratio: 1.89-2.03 and rate of return: 100.55-
115.77) in comparison with the STC (B:C ratio: 1.05 and rate
of return: 23.78).
• The biofloc fish farming could be identified as an alternative
source of livelihood for the fishermen/farmers.
• In the context of higher production rates, farmers also
should take care of marketability of the fish by adopting
novel marketing strategies such as live fish trade and value
addition

Importance of Genetically Improved Farmed Tilapia
(GIFT) seeds of RGCA (Ref:
• Tilapia commonly known as "Aquatic Chicken" is one of the most popular seafood
commodities across the world with a growing global market of 11 to 12% per
annum.
• WorldFish Centre, Malaysia Joined hands with MPEDA-RGCA as sole authority in
India, for Successful implementation of GIFT selective breeding programme.
• RGCA is successfully conducting pedigreed breeding programme of GIFT in Indian
condition and produced G8 generation.
• FAO described Tilapia as one of the most important food fish of the 21st century.
• Fully pedigreed selectively bred stocks

Introduction • The farming of tilapias, especially of Nile tilapia (Oreochromis niloticus) in its crudest form is believed to have originated more than 4000 years ago from Egypt. • The first recorded scientifically oriented culture of tilapia was conducted in Kenya in 1924 and soon spread to many parts of the world. • Tilapia, native to Africa and the Middle East and popularly known as “aquatic chicken”, is widely farmed in about 145 countries worldwide. • Once considered “a poor man’s fish”, tilapia has emerged from mere obscurity to be one of the world’s most productive and internationally traded food fish. • It is a versatile species, being hardy and quick growing, can be farmed in a wide array of culture environments and systems, ranging from extensive rural subsistence, low-input pond culture using agriculture by-products to intensive systems such as recirculating aquaculture systems (RAS), Biofloc systems, raceways and so forth. • About 70 species of tilapias, of this commercial tilapia production mainly on three species, Nile tilapia (Oreochromis niloticus), has for many decades been responsible for the significant increase in global tilapia production from freshwater aquaculture due to its short generation time, high tolerance to variable water quality and diseases and ability to grow in diverse farming systems • The average production growth of farmed tilapia reached 10.1 % between 1999 and 2018 with production increasing from 3.49 million tons in 2010 to 6.03 million tons in 2018. • Globally, tilapia is among the most important species produced in aquaculture that grows a 7% annually 7% and the production of tilapia worldwide has reached the 6 million tons in 2020.

  • 4. • The development of Genetically Improved Farmed Tilapia (GIFT) – through traditional selective breeding techniques to improve commercially important traits – by WorldFish and partners is a major milestone in the history of not only tilapia aquaculture but also the aquaculture of tropical finfish as a whole. • WorldFish estimates that more than 50 percent of global tilapia production is from GIFT and GIFT-derived strains. • In India, fish consumption is steadily increasing, and the government has set a target of achieving annual per capita consumption of 12 kilograms by 2024-25 against an estimated consumption of 5.6 kilograms in 2018-19. • To achieve this goal, the government of India has set a target of producing 22 million tons of fish by 2024-25 as against a production of 13.75 million metric tons in 2018-19 – an increase of about 8 million metric tons – to meet the demand of a growing population and also increasing per capita consumption of fish. • Much of the increase in production is projected to come from inland aquaculture.
  • 5. • Farming of fish in cages to intensive production systems such as recirculating aquaculture (RAS) and Biofloc systems, in addition to traditional pond production systems – an urgent need is felt to identify a species that is amenable to farming in these varied systems, besides Pangasius. • Species for Aquaculture • Tilapia belongs to the family Cichlidae under order Perciformes. • The tilapias have recently been classified into three genera, based on parental incubation of eggs. • The species of the genera Sarotherodon and Oreochromis are mouth brooders, while Tilapia incubates eggs in a lake or pond bottom built-in “nest”. • There are about 70 species of tilapias, of which nine species are used in aquaculture worldwide (FAO 2008). • Important commercial species include: the Mozambique tilapia (Oreochromis mossambicus), blue tilapia (O. aureus), Nile tilapia(O. niloticus), Zanzibar tilapia (O. hornorum), and the red belly tilapia (O. zilli).

Cont… • Mono sex culture of tilapia is advantageous because of faster growth and larger and more uniform size of males. • The development of Genetically Improved Tilapia (GIFT) technology is based on traditional selective breeding and is meant to improve commercially important traits of tropical farmed fish which is a major milestone in the history of tilapia aquaculture. • Through combined selection technology, the GIFT program achieved 12-17% average genetic gain per generation over five generations and cumulative increase in growth rate of 85% in O. niloticus (Eknath and Acosta,1998). • Other varieties like ‘red tilapia’ also hold promise. There is high potential of export of tilapia to US, Europe and Japan.
  • 7. Habitat and Biology • Nile tilapia is a tropical species that prefers to live in shallow water. • It is an omnivorous grazer that feeds on phytoplankton, periphyton, aquatic plants, small invertebrates, benthic fauna, detritus and bacterial films associated with detritus. • Sexual maturity in ponds is reached at an age of 5-6 months. • Spawning begins when the water temperature reaches 24°C. • The female incubates the eggs in her mouth and broods the fry after hatching until the yolk sac is absorbed. • Fecundity is proportional to the body weight of the female. • A 100 g female will produce about 100 eggs per spawn, while a female weighing 600-1000 g can produce 1000 to 1500 eggs. • Nile tilapia can live longer than 10 years and reach a weight exceeding 5 kg. • Hormonal sex reversal involves the, use of this technique however has not been fully accepted in some countries due to concerns on impact on human health. Production of ‘supermales’ through genetic manipulation could solve this issue.
  • 8. Tilapia in Indian aquaculture • In the past, there was a misconception that tilapia is a pest in Indian aquaculture due to the introduction of the wrong species – Mozambique tilapia – in 1952. • The culture of this species was met with failure due to its undesirable characteristics and production of small, low-value fish at harvest. As a result, tilapia farming was banned in 1959. • With subsequent studies indicating the potential of farming Nile tilapia, the ban was lifted in 2009 and the government of India formulated guidelines for responsible farming of the species. State governments were mandated to monitor, control and surveil hatchery, nursery and farming facilities. • Biosecurity and licensing are the key aspects of the guidelines and the state governments are authorized to issue licenses and register farms. • Under the guidelines, some private hatcheries, and companies as well as the Rajiv Gandhi Centre for Aquaculture (RGCA) were initially allowed to import commercially viable tilapia strains from overseas and set up multiplication centers and hatcheries in the country. • In 2019–20, close to 94 million fry was produced by about 11 licensed and more than 25 unauthorized tilapia hatcheries. • The major strains produced by licensed hatcheries in India were GIFT, Chitralada and Golden. • While there is a steady increase in the production of tilapia in states like West Bengal, Maharashtra, Madhya Pradesh, Chhattisgarh, Bihar, Jharkhand and Kerala, the major hub for commercial aquaculture production in India, Andhra Pradesh, farms primarily Indian carps. • Farmers are not keen on tilapia farming in the absence of an assured market for large production. • Some of the main factors for low production of tilapia in India are the non-availability of quality seeds, lack of awareness and knowledge of the species among farmers and consumers as well as limited access to markets. • In 2011, RGCA – under the aegis of the Marine Products Development Authority of India (MPEDA) – collaborated with WorldFish to establish a satellite breeding program for GIFT.
  • 9. Guidelines for Responsible Farming of Tilapia in India • Monosex population (all male) also could be produced with provision of 17± Methyl testosterone treated feed for four weeks. • Only four fish farmer groups, M/s Aresen Bio Tech, A.P, Vijaywada, M/s Ananda Aqua Exports(P) Ltd., Bhimavaram, A.P, M/s Indepesca Pvt. Ltd., Mumbai M/s CP Aqua (India) Pvt. Ltd., Chennai, and M/s Rajiv Gandhi Centre for Aquaculture (RGCA), the R & D arm of the Marine Products Export Development Authority (MPEDA) are already permitted by Government of India for the seed production and farming of tilapia (Mono sex and mono culture of Nile/GIFT/golden tilapia) in accordance with the guidelines for the hatchery operation and farming of tilapia, developed by the Sub-Committee under the National Committee on Introduction of Exotic Aquatic Species into Indian Waters. • Farming Systems: Tilapia farming ranges from a rural subsistence (extensive, low input practices, non- commercial and for household consumption) to a large-scale (capital intensive, commercial purpose and market driven) level. • Water-based systems • Cage farming: • Cage culture of tilapia avoids problems with over breeding because eggs fall through the cage meshes. • The other main advantage is that the farmer does not necessarily need to own the water body where the cages are placed. • The cages can be made of netting or are sometimes made from bamboo or other locally available materials. • The fish derive most of their nutrition from the surrounding water; however they may also be fed supplementary feeds. • Typical stockingrates are 10 kg/m3 maximum. • Intensive cage culture with stocking rates of around 25 kg/m3 is also getting popular. • Average production levels are variable in different systems and countries. • Under intensified cage culture production levels of 100-305 kg/m3 are reported (Alceste and Jory, 2002, Costa et al., 2000).
  • 10. Land-based systems for Tilapia Farming • Ponds: • The main advantage of ponds is that fish can be grown very cheaply through fertilization. • Many different types of ponds are used for tilapia culture. • The most widespread, but most unproductive are low input ponds with uncontrolled breeding and irregular harvesting; yields are typically 500-2000 kg/ha/yr of uneven sized fish. • If monosex fish are stocked and regular manuring and supplementary feeding is practiced yields can be up to 8000 kg/ha/yr of even sized fish. • Polyculture of tilapia with other native fishes in freshwater ponds is also widely integrated with agriculture and animal farming. • Intensive tanks: • Intensive tank culture avoids problems with overbreeding because there is no space for males to set up territories. It requires a constant supply of water, either gravity fed or pumped. • Usual maximum stocking rates in tanks where the water is changed every 1-2 hours would be around at 25-50 kg/m3.
  • 11. Husbandry Techniques • Four hatchery and stocking practices have contributed most to this change: ● Stocking good species such as Oreochromis niloticus instead of Oreochromis mossambicus ● Hand sexing of juveniles: There are clear differences between the sexes in tilapia species, particularly in the form of the urinogenital opening, fin morphology and adult colouration. • Skilled hatchery workers can achieve over 95 % male populations on 5-7 cm fish. ● Hybridization: O. hornorum is the only known species which consistently produces all male fry when crossed with O. niloticus or O. mossambicus. The main problem is the maintenance of the pure lines. ● Hormonal sex reversal: Fry can be collected at the yolk sac or first feeding stages, no later than one week after released from the female, and fed with feed containing the sex reversal hormone.
  • 12. Guidelines for Tilapia Culture in India I. Steering Committee • i. The Ministry of Agriculture (MoA), Govt. of India may constitute a Steering Committee at National level to oversee and monitor the tilapia seed and grow-out production. • This Committee may empower respective State Fisheries Departments for monitoring, controlling and surveillance (MCS) of Hatchery/Farming (Nursery as well as Grow-out) facility. ii. The Steering Committee constituted by the MoA shall recommend standard guidelines with regard to quarantine measures required for tilapia brood seed(stock) importation for Hatchery and Breeding Programmes. iii. This Steering Committee is empowered to modify/revise the guidelines as and when required. • The steering committee based on feedback on implementation of guidelines will give more specific guidelines on vulnerable areas / sanctuaries and permissible therapeutics. iv. A Committee constituted by the respective State Government is authorized to call for details from any Hatchery/Breeding/Nursery/Farm facility registered for tilapia aquaculture in case of violation of the prescribed guidelines. v. The Farmers/Entrepreneurs who intend to undertake tilapia Hatchery/Breeding/Nursery/Grow-out Farming shall register with the respective State Fisheries Department using the appropriate format prescribed by the Steering Committee.
  • 13. II. Culture Systems and Practices i. Registration: Farmers who intend to take up Tilapia culture shall apply to the • State Fisheries Department in the prescribed Proforma (Annexure-I) for permission. ii. Location: Farms may be located in areas which are not prone for floods or in a buffer zone around a declared sanctuary or bio-reserve or other vulnerable areas in order to avoid escape to the open water bodies. iii. Type and culture Intensity: Farming of only monosex male/sterile (through either hormonal manipulation or cross breeding) is permitted. iv. Area of culture systems: Each Farm should not be less than 1.0 Acre water spread area. Size of each pond should not be more than 10.0 Acres. v. Species: Species recommended is Nile Tilapia or improved strains/hybrids of Tilapia • vi. Size of the seed to be stocked: Grow-out ponds should be stocked with sex reversed tilapia (SRT) seed of more than 10 g. 30 Days old sex reversed tilapia (SRT) to be reared to 10 g size raised in on-farm nurseries or in registered seed farms. • vii. Stocking density: Maximum of 5 nos/m2

Bio-security: The approval for farming of tilapia shall be accorded only to those ponds/farms which could maintain bio-security of the farm to ensure no escape of the biological material from the farm to the water source or to any other source even in situations like flooding. • Therefore, there should be a standard design specifying the minimum requirement of bund height water management systems and other bio-security measures which are necessary for farming. • Outlet water from culture ponds must be screened and treated before releasing into drains/canals/rivers during culture practice or subsequent to harvesting in order to prevent escape of eggs into natural water bodies (b) Provision of Bird scaring device/fencing is mandatory, (c) Bund height should be high enough to avoid fish escape and (d) sluice gates must be provided with appropriate mesh size to prevent escape of fish/eggs/fry.

Cage culture in reservoirs and tanks: Cage culture of tilapia shall be restricted to those reservoirs which are having already established stocks of tilapia. • Before initiation of such farming, assessment studies should be carried out by respective State Fisheries Departments in order to ascertain the presence of tilapia population in such reservoirs. • Cage area in the reservoir should not exceed 1% of effective water area (EWA). • Stocking size in cages must be more than 50 g weight. • Accordingly, cage net should have appropriate mesh size. • Use of formulated floating pellet feed with minimum protein content of 25% is encouraged in cage culture. x. Intensive tilapia culture: Farms intending to undertake recirculatory farming practice should register with state fisheries departments with a stocking density of not more than 150 nos/m3 with provision of floating feeds. • Biosecurity measures followed in this case must conform to the standards specified for Grow-out farms

Establishment of Hatchery • Entrepreneurs who intend to establish tilapia seed hatcheries have to obtain approval from steering committee and also to be registered with State Fisheries Departments. • Hatcheries shall obtain brood stock from the approved foreign/Indian companies. Hatcheries shall sell seed only to the registered nurseries/farms. IV. Seed Production of Tilapia i. The Steering Committee will recommend establishment of tilapia National Breeding Programme (tNBP) for tilapia through ICAR fisheries research institutes and other similar agencies. ii. The steering committee shall identify and approve the Foreign/Indian companies who are eligible to supply brood seed (stock) to commercial hatcheries. iii. The steering committee shall inspect and approve the design and lay-out of hatchery including quarantine facility. Quarantine of imported seed for 21 days is necessary to avoid any incidence of disease outbreak. • Imported seed stock may also need to be quarantined with companion species in order to assess susceptibility/resistance against exotic pathogens. iv. Production of mono-sex male tilapia by the hatcheries should conform to the protocols specified under the guidelines. v. Tilapia breeding programme with an objective of selective breeding for genetic improvement in subsequent generations involving geneticist should be encouraged to avoid future catastrophe due to inbreeding. vi. Sex reversal using non-hormonal techniques/technology should be encouraged.

Seed Nurseries • Nurseries which are intending to raise seed (Seed Farms) for tilapia culture have to be registered with State Fisheries Departments following the guidelines available for Grow-out farms. • Nurseries should procure sex reversed tilapia (SRT) seed only from the registered hatcheries. VI. Health Monitoring • Health of the farm stock may be checked periodically and in case of disease incidence, permissible therapeutics may only be used judiciously. VII. Record Keeping • Registers should be maintained pond wise on day to day management of the farm indicating the details of stocking, source of seed, inputs, sampling details, water quality details, health, growth etc. The records should be produced at the time of inspection by the concerned fisheries authorities. VIII. Harvesting • Feeding should be suspended one/two days prior to harvest. • Harvesting may be done using drag nets or any other quick harvesting methods. IX. Post-Harvest and Transport • Harvested fish should be immediately iced and transported for domestic markets/processing plants. • Adequate infrastructure facilities for processing of tilapia in value added items should be encouraged
  • 18. XII. Evaluation and Impact Assessment i. Evaluate the effectiveness of preventive steps taken up to prevent escape of tilapia from ponds and cages and improve them ii. Impact of escapees on ecosystem and how they would modify the invasive capacity of existing tilapia species to be determined. XIII. Further Technical Suggestions i. Fertilization: Fertilization in pond culture using organic manures can be done depending on the nutrient status of the soil as and when required. ii. Types of feeds: Formulated floating pellet feed/farm made pellet feed with minimum protein content of 20% iii. Feed storage: Proper feed storage facility should be provided at the farm site with proper ventilation and management of humidity. • The feed should be stacked on raised wooden platforms without touching the walls to avoid mold. • The feed should be used within three months from the date of production. iv. Harvesting: Feeding should be suspended one/two days prior to harvest. Harvesting may be done using drag nets or any other quick harvesting methods. v. Post-harvest and transport: Harvested fish should be immediately iced and transported for domestic markets/processing plants. • Adequate infrastructure facilities for processing of tilapia in value added items should be encouraged.

  • 21. Majorly Preferred culture practices for GIFT Tilapia farming(Pond, Cage culture, RAS & Biofloc technology)
  • 23. Pre-stocking management • Pre-stocking management aims to properly prepare pond to remove the causes of poor survival, unsatisfactory growth, etc., and ensure ready availability of natural food in sufficient quantity and quality for seed/fry/ fingerlings to be stocked. • Pre-stocking part of the management involves the following sequential measures. • Pond Drying In the course of harvesting ponds, water is drained; pond bottom should be exposed to bright sun for about 15-20 days till it cracks. • It is a general rule that ponds should remain as dry as possible until the next production season. • Cleaning and cultivation of pond bottom Removing objects, vegetation and aquatic weeds is the second step of pond preparation. • Passing of dry pond bottom with a ploughing will ensure healthier life of benthos.
  • 24. Eradication of unwanted fish and disinfection of pond bottom • The predatory or invasive fishes like directly pray upon the juveniles (young once of the fish) and compete with GIFT tilapia for food, space and oxygen. • Prior to stocking of desirable species utmost care shall be taken for complete eradication of undesirable species which shall be done by repeated netting of pond or using fish toxicant (Mahua Oil Cake), Liming Quick lime at the rate of 200 kg/ha is recommended for accelerating the mineralization of organic matter and act as prophylactic measure. • It acts as buffer against pH changes and it increases the availability of carbon for photosynthesis • It is essential nutrient play a vital role in the productivity of the pond where fish prefer natural fish food is expected. • Organic manure i.e. cattle dung @ 1000 kg/ha is generally applied in 4 equal installments. Inorganic fertilizers like Urea @ 25 kg/ha/month and single super phosphate 20 kg/ha/month. Manuring and fertilization should be applied at monthly intervals.

Stocking Management • Stocking Management In HDPE lining pond, only stocking and Post-Stocking Management operations may performed. • Initially for 20-30 days, it is preferable to stock GIFT seed in small ponds or hapas (net enclosures) so that feeding and survival may be easily monitored. • Hapa In a nursery pond or in hapa, tilapia fish seeds should be kept for a month. • The effective implementation of nursery care in it is necessary to achieve optimum fish survival and an improvement in production. According to the Responsible Farming of Tilapia in India 2020 guidelines, the optimum stocking density of GIFT tilapia are 5/m2 or as the diversified system demands. The stocking density is based on culture system in which fish will grow

Acclimatization and Stocking • Acclimatization and Stocking Before stocking fish for grow-out into a pond, the number of fish, the average individual weight and the total quantity must be estimated. • The fish from the polybags / transport tanks are to be gradually acclimatized to the water quality parameters in the pond before release into the open ponds or nursery hapas in the ponds. • Initial biomass calculation followed by periodic checks at regular intervals during the culture period will allow reliable projections on biomass and survival rates.
  • 27. Post - stocking Management • Post-stocking management involves maintenance of pond environment and harnessing the pond productivity in the form of natural fish food, maintaining supplementary feeding and health care. • As per guideline, could maintain bio-security of the farm to ensure no escape of the seed or Broodstock and continuous. • Supplementary Feeding Soon after stocking, the fish start grazing natural food available in the pond irrespective of their stage of life cycle. • Seed feeds voraciously on plankton (if available). • GIFT tilapia seeds need more food than the naturally available food in the fish pond. Artificial food in floating form is useful for their growth. • Tilapia eats almost all types of supplements, but responds very well to artificial foods. • Guideline stated that formulated standardized certified floating pellet feed/farm made pellet feed with minimum protein content of 20% should be used. • Care should be taken to ensure that the water quality of the pond does not deteriorate due to excessive feeding. • However, feeding has to be at the discretion of the pond manager, with feed consumption, the pond conditions and the general environmental conditions be considered before deciding on the quantity of feed to be provided. Water Quality Management

Regular Sampling and Fish Health Management • Periodic sampling of fish is necessary to observe the growth and health status of the production biomass. • Fishes should be sampled once in every 15 days to check the health and growth. • The body surface should be checked for presence parasites if any. • If there is mass mortality occurred, immediately check the water parameter and other sign of infection. • The flow of pesticide-rich water from crop fields or the release of hazardous industrial waste, etc. may cause a mass mortality of fish in a farm pond. • Harvesting: • Tilapia usually weighs 500 to 600 gm in 5-6 months after stocking. • The periodical harvesting is done subsequently with dragnet of suitable mesh size and final harvesting is carried out by completely draining the pond.

AN ECONOMIC EVALUATION OF BIOFLOC & Silpaulin tank culture of GIFT Tilapia (Ref: Soorya Gopan et al.2022) • The culture system included five Biofloc tanks and one silpaulin tank culture (STC) having 25, 000 L each. • The GIFT tilapia were stocked at 1250 fingerlings per tank. • The study was carried out for a year, and two cycles (each cycle of five months) were carried out. • At the end of the trial, fish attained an average body weight of 450.65 ± 24.20 g in biofloc units, which was 94% higher compared to STC tanks (232.25 ± 13.40). • The mean specific growth rate (SGR) was higher in biofloc system (0.66 ± 0.02) than the STC (0.35 ± 0.04). • The total harvest weight in biofloc and STC systems were 578 kg and 260 kg, respectively. • The net profit obtained ranged from Rs. 92,500 – 1,06,500 and Rs. 4650 in biofloc system and STC. • The biofloc system yielded a higher benefit: cost (B.C.) ratio (2.03-2.17) and rate of return (108.05-123.27) compared to STC. • The biofloc fish farming also showed a higher economic viability (B:C ratio: 1.89-2.03 and rate of return: 100.55- 115.77) in comparison with the STC (B:C ratio: 1.05 and rate of return: 23.78). • The biofloc fish farming could be identified as an alternative source of livelihood for the fishermen/farmers. • In the context of higher production rates, farmers also should take care of marketability of the fish by adopting novel marketing strategies such as live fish trade and value addition
