5. INTRODUCTION
• Dental hygiene is the most important for human body
• There are many products are present in the market for
the dental hygiene of the teeth and are considered as
dental products.
• DENTAL PRODUCTS: The substances used to
produce effect on teeth and in dental cavity is called
as dental products.

Caries: How do teeth develop decay?
Bacteria
Food
Teeth
Bacteria break down food into acids that eat away at
the tooth.
DECAY
17. Dental caries
Dental caries also known as tooth decay or a cavity, caries is a
biofilm dependent disease, bacterial in origin, that causes
demineralization and destruction of the hard tissues of the. It is a
result of the production of acid by bacterial fermentation of food
debris accumulated on the tooth surface

18. Dental caries
• If demineralization exceeds saliva and other
remineralization factors such as from calcium and
fluoridated toothpastes, these once hard tissues
progressively break down, producing dental caries
(cavities, that is, holes in the teeth).

19. Dental caries
• Depending on the extent of tooth destruction, various
treatments can be used to restore teeth to proper form,.
• Instead, dental health organizations advocate preventive and
prophylactic measures, such as regular oral hygiene and
dietary modifications, to avoid dental caries.

Risk factors shared by adults and children include:
•Bacteria: High bacterial counts
•Family history of (cavities)
•Diet: Frequently consuming sugary foods & drinks
•Inadequate fluoride
•Low Saliva or Dry Mouth from many prescription drugs
•Low socio-economic status – may indicate poor diet, lack of
access to care
•Aging, disease, and disease treatment can contribute to risk
for tooth decay in adults
21. PREVENTION…
• Maintaining dental hygeine with the help of
dentrifices- Dentrifices enhance removal of
dental plaque and stains
• Flossing and brushing regularly
• Administration of Fluoride (Anti caries
agents- Sodium Fluoride, Stannous Fluoride,
Sodium Monofluorophosphate)

26. Dentifrices or Cleaning Agent
• Dentifrices is a material which is used for
cleaning of teeth and adjancent gums
• Dentrifrices are applied as powders or pastes
• The powders and paste such as Calcium
Carbonate, Calcium Phosphates, Calcium
Sulphate etc
• Dentifrice or tooth pastes are responsible for
physically removing plaque and debris.
• They may also contain some sweetening agents.

29. Anticaries Agent
• These are the agents which help in prevention
of dental decay.
Decay due to bacterial metabolism
Due to action of lactic acid, where food is
attaches
e.g. Sodium fluoride, stannous fluoride, sodium
monofluorophosphate

30. ROLE OF FLUORIDE
• Fluoride helps in preventing dental caries
• Fluoride forms a extra layer on teeth and prevent tooth
decay
• We get fluoride from municipality water
• If there is huge fluoride is present on teeth it is known
as dental fluorosis
• Fluoride is anticariogenic as it replaces the hydroxyl
ion in hydroxy apatite with the fluoride ion to form
fluorapatite in the outer surface of the enamel.
• It can be administrated by two routes- Orally and
Topically.

31. ROLE OF FLUORIDE
• Fluoride in low concentration (1-2 parts per million), if
present in drinking water, also causes, the decrease in
development of incidence of caries in the population.
• Fluoride can also be administrated orally as Sodium
Fluoride tablets or drops added in water or fruit juice. But
it is not beneficial as such.
• A 2% aqueous solution of sodium fluoride and 8%
solution of stannous fluoride are extensively used for
topical application.
• Two such well established fluorides are Sodium fluoride
and Stannous fluoride.

33. ROLE OF PHOSPHATE
• Inorganic phosphate salts can also be useful in the
prevention of dental caries.
• Phosphate ions are needed for stronger bone as well
as for healthy teeth.
• It is also used as cleansing agent.

35. Desensitizers
• Desentising agents are used in tooth decay or
in perception of heat and cold
• It is used to reduce sensitivity of heat and cold
• It probaly acts like local anaesthetic

39. Cement & filler
• Dental cements are used to temporarily cover
protection that had gone operation
• Its is applied as a paste which solidfy later
• Eugenol is antispetic and act as local anaesthetic is
used in cement as a medicated product
• Gold and sliver are used as permanent filling
