Dream Reader Anthony Shafton Analysis
Everyone has dreams, but not all are remembered. However, some stay with us for a lifetime. Many
people, like Joseph and Pharaoh, from have vivid dreams they cannot shake from their thoughts
upon waking from a deep slumber. They are left filled with confusion and apprehension. These lucid
thoughts lead, not only them but also us to wonder the meaning behind dreams and their purpose in
our lives. Dreams are here to enlighten our minds to unconscious needs, profound internal thought,
and self–discovery.
All individuals have insufficiencies; it is essentially what makes them human. Anthony Shafton, the
author of Dream Reader, wrote a book describing the different theories of understanding and

I had never tried to make a connection between illness and dream before. I do remember having
many dreams about my teeth falling out when I came to college. There was a time when the thought
plagued me for a couple of weeks. Shafton said, "a terrifying symptom is usually your greatest

Consciousness can be defined as our awareness of ourselves and our environment. When dreaming
we are in an altered state of consciousness. Dreaming is a sequence of images, emotions, and
thoughts passing through a sleeping person's mind. My dreams can be described as internal conflicts
or subconscious fears. These dreams are more so influenced by things I watch on television or things
occurring in my life. The patterns of my dreams consist of things that frighten me. It possibly stems

I was going crazy trying to figure out what my dreams represented. Were they about me at the
present time? Where they about my past life? Where they about my future? What did my dreams
mean? These are the kind of questions I was looking answers for, but didn't get far with anything. Of
course I was looking for these answers in my mother country where there aren't that many people

My next overwhelming feeling was being totally directionless. This had never happened to me
before. I always know where I am and have a great sense of direction no matter where I am. This
was of great concern to me, not knowing where to start and in what direction to go. I started walking
with my brother behind me. We did not speak to one another. We would come across other people
frantically looking for their loved ones and stop to try and help them.

of Freudian dream theory and will go on to describe the various components of personality structure

The latent content is the underlying, hidden part of the dream that holds the true meaning of the
unconscious desires (Solms, 2000). The process by which the latent content is transformed into the
disguised manifest content is what Freud referred to as the dream work (Sharpe, 1988). The dream
work can disguise the latent views through the following four mechanisms: 'condensation' (the
condensing of multiple thoughts into one), 'displacement' (replaces a latent element by a concealed
trivial reference to it e.g. your mother is represented as a cat), 'symbolism' (which transforms
thoughts into visual elements) followed by a process of 'secondary revision' in which the dreaming
mind takes all these distorted elements and organises them into a more comprehensible format
(Schredl, 2008)

Week Four Thoughts In the video this week, it states "Individuals are afraid of succeeding because
of fear" (Mateusz et al., 2013). This quote captured my attention upon my initial viewing of the
video titled, "Dream: Motivational Video," because of the boldness it projected to the audience. The
speech is approximately six minutes and was published on July 2, 2013. It provides the audience
with a background on how they should make their dreams realistic. Although obstacles will get in
our way when trying to fulfill dreams–the purpose is to separate from negativity and dream big.
Even though the fear of failure overtakes our mind, we cannot allow the fear to detour us from
living out our dream. Finally, the speech uses clips from movies titled, Into The Wild, Rocky 4,

The 1994 Documentary, Hoop Dreams, directed by Steve James, is a masterful display of human
drama. The story–line is so captivating and theatrical that it seems crafted from fiction. The
Documentary boasts cinematic techniques and private investigating that rivals most film of this time
period. The film follows the high school careers of two boys from the Cabrini–Green housing
projects in Chicago. The aggressive authenticity of cinema verite does not only peek through in

In contrast with interviews that James conducts as a source or witness, in which he sets the mise–
en–scene, James tends to keep the camera true–to–life with the mother (Bellour, 50). James
maintains a shaky camera technique to solidify his position as "the eye looking into their world."
During panning or other establishing shots, narrated sequences, and interviews with characters, a
tripod is used to separate those moments from the story. Although not entirely non–diegetic, the
interviews are spaces in the film shot outside of the story. The audience is given confirmation of
how William and Arthur must be feeling during this time, allowing character development. Along
with the ethical concerns of not tampering with reality, aesthetic efforts during the interviews was
necessary to separate them from reality (Ellis, 222) Arthur's mother, Sheila Agee, was a symbolic

Dream Counseling Session Analysis
For my 30 minute dream counseling session, I worked with my mom. We share our dreams
frequently with each other so it seemed very natural to do this session with her. We sat alone
together in the living room and I asked her to tell me her whole dream with as much remembered
detail as possible, just like we do in class when we do dream work.
While we do share our dreams frequently, it's usually more in levity than in analysis, so the dynamic
was immediately different than it usually is. She took more care in explaining her dream, and I made

As I mentioned previously, I'm usually empathetic in my daily conversations, especially with my
mom. However, I did notice a much different environment to our usual conversations about our

It was very windy and I was tree to touch it as I was being instructed to. As I approached the

Have you ever wondered if it was easy or hard to attain childhood dreams? Through this poem, full
of symbolism and detail, the character recalls back to the time in his life where it was hard to

September 3, 2015 Dreams are the key to the future. Every idea starts with a dream. And dreams
about past experiences are meant to bring back old feelings and emotions. They can trigger guilt,
hope, and anything in between. In the novel, 1984, by George Orwell, Winston Smith has many
dreams that connect to the deep–rooted issues within Winston's conscience. These dreams signify
everything that the Party hopes to eliminate. However, they also signify Winston's morbid future. To
start, Oceania begins as a place that WInston knows is unpleasant. He understands the corruption of
the Party, and he recognizes the poverty. He hopes of someday living somewhere happy, and

My dream began in a huge mansion late one night. I began to walk down the long, narrow hall.
