The start of the Civil War was April 12, 1861 when Confederates attacked a Union fort. Fort Sumter
took a heavy beating that day and would later surrender after the second day of the Confederates
attacking (Roark et al. 424–5). Once the war started, the U.S. Navy created a blockade around the
3,500 miles of the South's coastline. The fleet was originally just 36 ships, but it grew to 150 with
new ships being added almost weekly. Few Confederate ships were able to cross the blockade,
unless they were specially designed stealthy steam boats. These ships were known as "blockade
runners" and were able to bring back important supplies like guns and medicine. But the blockade
runners were in no way designed to destroy the Union's blockade or even the ships that formed it for
that matter. The Union's navy was expanding too fast for the Confederates to keep up. The
Confederacy decided to build two ironclad warships, the Merrimack and Virginia. These warships
were powerful and sank two wooden Union ships. But the Union was not ready to give up their

Allies were determined to stop the Soviets from controlling Germany and were in the process of
planning a campaign to restore Western Germany's economy. As a result, the Allies proposed a

this blockade was to cut of Western Allies ' railway, road, and canal access to the eastern side of the
city. The Soviets proposed an offer to the west, in which they would drop the blockade, if newly

The Civil War was the bloodiest war in American history, as the schism between the North and the
South turned friends into foes and brothers into sworn enemies. While this war is widely known for
the battles that took place upon the land, the United States Navy contributed to the war effort upon
the sea and rivers as well. Secretary of the Navy Gideon Welles had three objectives for the Navy
during the Civil War and one of them was to blockade the Confederate State of America. The overall
goal of the blockade was to stifle the Confederacy so that it could easily be defeated by the Union
forces. However, the blockade was not the Navy's most important contribution to the preservation of
the Union, as the blockade failed to smother the Confederacy due to the poor ships that it was
composed of and the inefficiencies that they presented.
The Union blockade struggled to establish itself due to the ships that made up the blockade. When
the blockade was first formed it was nothing more than a paper blockade as the Union had only a
handful of warships that were available to patrol the some 3,000 miles of Confederate coastline.1
Welles realized that the Navy needed more vessels to sufficiently cover the Confederate coast so he
made Union naval officers responsible for purchasing the vessels that would bolster the blockade.2

In late April, after the beginning of hostilities at Fort Sumter, Lincoln ordered a naval blockade of
the states that has succeeded so far. Knowing that the South could not match the Union 's navy, the

armor on ships, decided that instead of trying to match the production power of the north, they
would build ships that were superior to the North 's individually. Mallory hired a group of men to

pointed out that instead of building new engines they could use the hull of the already ready

types of guns, along with twenty–six inches of armor composed of pine wood and iron.

More than 25 yrs ago, it was documented that post operative residual curarization
(PORC) was frequent in patients given long acting neuromuscular blocking agents [1].
Later studies have confirmed this finding even with intermediate acting neuromuscular blocking
agents [2–5].
Undetected residual neuromuscular blockade is common in the post anaesthesia care unit (PACU).
In fact 16–42% of patients receiving intermediate acting muscle relaxants in the operating room
(OR) have train of four (TOF) ratios < 0.7–0.8 in the
PACU [2, 5, 6]. These findings suggest that anaesthesia care providers are unable to reliably detect
residual neuromuscular block in the OR using standard clinical criteria.

Annotated Bibliography: The Cold War
Research this week was fruitful and my bibliography grew substantially. A large part of the reason
for this growth was the mining of the bibliography of other sources. One of the most fruitful was,
The Cold War in a Cold Land: Fighting Communism on the Northern Plains. The book provided me
with a variety of both primary and secondary sources. The list of sources includes, books, articles,
and government reports. A second book that provided more sources was, How We Forgot the Cold
War. The bibliography provided some sources created by the North Dakota State Historical Society.
In addition to these sources, I have been looking into newspapers. I have ordered some rolls of
microfilm of the Griggs County Sentinel–Courier and am still waiting for them to arrive. I started
with these rolls because they came from the paper closest to the geographic center of my research,
as well as the dates of my research. In addition to the rolls, I have ordered The Cold War in a Cold
Land, which provided a list of other newspapers that may be useful. In addition to ordering more
microfilm reels that I will have sent to me at school, I will also have the opportunity to examine

The location of some of the government reports is not clear, so finding them will be a priority. Many
of my secondary sources are located in different libraries, so I will continue to use interlibrary loan
to get and read them. The sources I found this week also alerted me to a new source that are worth
pursuing. One of the bibliographies I examined listed some news reports from local North Dakota
news outlets. Many of theses are also located in the State Historical Society. I am currently
exploring the best way to examine these as well. I will continue to read my secondary sources,
