UNIT 2:
THE CLASSIFICATION OF
LIVING THINGS
1.- HOW DO WE CLASSIFY VERTEBRATE
ANIMALS?
Mammals
Reptiles
Vertebrates Fish
Birds
Amphibians
MAMMALS
Their body is
covered by skin and
hair (fur)
MAMMALS BODY RESPIRATION
EXTREMITIES
REPRODUCTION
They have lungs
They are
viviparous.
Female mammals
produce milk to feed
their babies
Terrestrial mammals have
four legs.
Aquatic mammals have
fins.
Many mammals also have a
tail
REPTILES
REPTILES BODY RESPIRATION
EXTREMITIES
REPRODUCTION
They have scales.
Some reptiles have a
hard shell (turtles)
They have lungs
They have four legs.
(Snakes don`t have
legs)
They are oviparous:
they are born from
eggs
FISH
FISH BODY RESPIRATION
EXTREMITIES
REPRODUCTION
They breathe with
their gills.
They are oviparous:
they are born from
eggs
They have a long
body covered by
scales
They have fins and
tail.
BIRDS
BIRDS BODY RESPIRATION
EXTREMITIES
REPRODUCTION
They have lungs
They are oviparous:
they are born from
eggs
They have
aerodynamic
bodies. Their bones
are thin and light to
fly.
They have four
extremities: two legs
and two wings.
AMPHIBIANS
AMPHIBIANS BODY RESPIRATION
EXTREMITIES
REPRODUCTION
When they are young they
have gills.
When they become adults,
they have lungs.
They are oviparous:
they are born from
eggs
They have thin,
smooth skin.
They have four
legs.
Many amphibians
also have a tail.
Molluscs
Coelenterates
Invertebrates Porifera
Echinoderms
Arthropods
Annelids
2.- HOW DO WE CLASSIFY INVERTEBRATE
ANIMALS?
MOLLUSCS
-They have soft bodies and
most have a hard shell.
-They breathe through
gills.
COELENTERATES
-They have a soft body.
-They have tentacles.
jellyfish
PORIFERA
-They have a soft body
with holes called pores.
sponges
ECHINODERMS
-Their bodies are covered
with sharp spikes.
starfish
ARTHROPODS
-They have an exoskeleton.
-Insects, spiders and
crustacean are arthropods
Insects spiders
crustacean
ANNELIDS
-They have a long, soft
body divided into
segments.
Worms leeches
Mussels snails
oyster
INVERTEBRATE ANIMALS
3. HOW CAN WE CLASSIFY PLANTS?
Seed plants:
they reproduce
by seeds
Plants
Non-seed plants:
They don`t have seeds. They reproduce by a special cells called spores. Ex.
Fern and mosses
Angiosperms: They produce flowers
(flowering plants)
Gymnosperms: They produce cones
(conifers)
Seed plants
Angiosperm Gymnosperm
Non-seed plants
Fern Mosses
4. WHAT ARE THE MONERA, FUNGI AND
PROTISTA KINGDOM?
FUNGI
FUNGI BODIES
They can be multicellular
or unicellular.
They consist of a cap,
stem
and hyphae.
NUTRITION
They produce a
substance that
breaks down plant
and animal matter.
REPRODUCTION
They produce
spores that are
carried by the wind.
Mould
Mushrooms
MONERANS
MONERANS BODIES
They are unicellular
organisms.
NUTRITION
They produce a
substance that
breaks down plant
and animal matter.
Bacterias
REPRODUCTION
They reproduce by
dividing.
PROTISTA
PROTISTA BODIES
They can be
multicellular
or unicellular.
NUTRITION
Some of them
contain
chlorophyll and
carry out
photosynthesis
Algae
REPRODUCTION
They reproduce by
dividing or by
spores.
