a Dozen in Custody Following Elder Abuse Investigation. A shocking case of elderly abuse occurred
in my own backyard; in a small town just minutes down the road. In the end, the owner and twenty
employees of the Alzheimer 's Care of Commerce were arrested. Some of the alleged abuse included
patients being tied down with bed sheets, being 'double diapered ' so that they would not have to be
changed as often, patients being hit and having water thrown on them, and being over medicated
causing death. Eighteen people were indicted on charges resulting from the investigation. One of
these cases was just recently tried earlier this month and the first person, who was accused of
illegally restraining a patient, was acquitted. The remaining cases have not been tried nor have a

The elderly are neglected around the world every day, and it is a problem that sometimes goes
unnoticed for days, months, years and sometimes never noticed at all. The neglect can happen at
home, or in a nursing home and is usually done by a caregiver. The caregiver is usually a trusted
individual that has been selected by their loved ones; which is one of the reasons it happens without
anyone noticing as these caregivers are trusted by family members and give the family no reason to
ever suspect harm or foul played being done to their elderly loved ones when no one is around.
Elderly neglect can also be defined as an elderly person who is not taking care of themselves
whether done on purpose or by mistake, because they have simply just forgotten how to take care of

statement is false. Substance abuse is not a minor problem with any population and the elderly are
not an exception. Substance abuse in the elderly tends to focus on a different set of psychoactive
substances than those abused by younger adults, with the exception of alcohol, which is commonly
abused across the adult life span (Segal, Qualls, & Smyer, 2011). With the younger generation they
are more likely to abuse illegal drugs, but with the older generation they are more likely to abuse
