Student Leadership Reflection
Throughout the semester I have learned a lot about my strengths. At first, I had no clue what they were. I also had no clue that they can help explain
why certain people work well in a group together or why they don't. My strengths have helped me adjust to life as a college student and even helped
me to figure out what I want to do after my college career is over. Events like the Heritage Project, The Student Leadership book, the networking event,
and even the peer mentor presentations gave me a lot to think about when considering my future. This class has helped me develop my leadership skills
and grow as an Otterbein student by allowing me to better understand myself.
Throughout this semester I have encountered many different situations that I have never experienced before. I wasn't hesitant about starting college
but once I got here I found it a little overwhelming. I didn't know about many of the resources that are on campus and classes were very different
from what I expected them to be. FYS Goal one, found on the strengths reflection paper guidelines is, "To connect you to the resources that promote
belonging, wellness, personal development, and success in the first year". I feel as though FYS 1025 has helped me meet that goal because I now
know about many of the resources centers here. I learned about them through Jordan's peer mentor moments, whether she was talking about the Center
for Student Success or the CCPD. Jordan's peer mentor moments helped me locate the different resource around campus and even understand what
they were about. Even though I haven't been to some of them, I was able to help people not in our class find them and know what those resources are
about. This has helped me grow as a student because it increases my familiarity with campus and allows me to know that if I have a question there are
people that can provide me with information.
The course has developed me as a future leader at Otterbein by helping me understand myself. In the beginning I didn't know about strengths. Now that
I do, I see why they are important when beginning a new chapter in life. Before starting a project, I now think about how I'm going to accomplish my
goals. I use my strategic strength to plan out

Preserving Historic District Conservation Project
A historic district or heritage district is a section of a city which contains older buildings considered valuable for historical or architectural reasons. This
definition first appeared in Athens Charter, 1933. In China, any region that is classified as a historical district should contain a group of buildings that
have cultural heritage significance with relatively integrated exterior and structures. All of these historic districts are cultural artifacts, and their stories
are entwined with relevant human civilization. Thus, for cultural heritage conservation, 99 National Historic and Culturally Famous Towns have been
promulgated by Chinese State Council in three groups since 1982. At the same time, different provinces and autonomous regions have also issued their
own list of Historical and Culturally Famous communities. However, I considered that during the implementation of promoting historic district
conservation project, many people misunderstand the initial purpose and the process of restoration. Therefore, huge numbers of cultural heritages were
transformed to "fake antique", and the cultural heritage value of relevant places has been seriously diminished.
Currently, historic districts are seriously affected by urban modernization and commercialization. During different parties are willing to take part in
relevant conservation project, how to maintain a balance between development and cultural heritage conservation has become one of most popular
issue in

San JosГ© De Moro's Social Responsibility
1.Introduction of research question (500 words)
The territory in which the country of Peru is now located has been uninterruptedly occupied for thousands of years. This continuous human settlement
in the area has left us with a vast number of archaeological sites, historic buildings and religious structures. The large number of sites – in addition to
the large artifact collections that can be found in the Peruvian museums – creates an almost insurmountable labor for the federal, provincial and local
governments, as well as the professionals involved in the various aspects of the preservation of these materials.
Despite the richness in its cultural heritage, 9.7% of Peru's 30,973,000 population lives in poverty (Poverty headcount ratio at 2 PPP$ a day). This fact,
coupled with the lack of supervision and/or protection of archaeological and historic sites has exposed Peru's cultural heritage to looting and
destruction, the illegal occupation of areas designated as national patrimony, illicit trafficking of cultural ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The author believes that while it is a necessary first step towards developing a sustainable plan, the lack of vision and the poor implementation of the
proposal leaves the community with an unviable, halfway–done program which does little to engage the community in the preservation of the site.
Through the study and review of two specific aspects of San JosГ© de Moro's social responsibility plan: 1. The Modular Museum Program as a
heritage tourism tool, and 2. The Development of a Local Identity, it is the purpose of this paper to demonstrate that in order to achieve a sustainable
preservation of the site, the local community must be treated as an equal stakeholder and decision–maker. Unfortunately, this has not been the case.

Essay on Walker's Message of Personal Heritage in...
Alice Walker's "Everyday Use" is a short story about a mother and two very different daughters set in rural Georgia during the late 1960's. The plot is
centered around on the two daughters, Dee and Maggie, and focusing on the differences between the two and who will gain possession of two
hand–made quilts that are seen as a coveted trophy by Dee and are viewed as everyday items Maggie. The final decision of which daughter ultimately
receives the quilts will be made by Momma Johnson. Momma, who is never given a first name in the story, is a strong black woman with many
man–like qualities. "In real life I am a large, big–boned woman with rough, man–working hands. In the winter I wear flannel nightgowns to bed and
overalls during the... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
I will be focusing this paper on the reasons why Maggie should be given the quilts, reasons why Dee should not be allowed to take them, and what
this tell us about Alice Walker's sense of what it means to be in touch with one's heritage. Maggie deserves the quilts because she appreciates the
practical value of the items and would naturally use them as they were intended. Like her grandmother, Maggie is a person who values the quilts more
as a practical solution for staying warm at night than as folk art which should be displayed in a museum. Dee's thoughts of her simple–minded sister
come into full light during a conversation with Momma when her request for the quilts is denied. "Maggie can't appreciate these quilts! She'd
probably be backward enough to put them the everyday use. I reckon she would," Momma replied, "God knows I been saving 'em long enough with
nobody using 'em. I hope she will." (DiYanni 748) With little or no money during tough times, poorer families have often had to be more self–reliant
where learning to sew was a skill that was valued and passed down to the younger generation. Maggie embraced this skill while her more ambitious
sister did not see the value in learning such an ordinary task. "She can always make more, "Momma said, "Maggie knows how to

Multiculturalism In White Teeth Thesis
White Teeth. The title of Zadie Smith's novel exquisitely expresses the author's use of metaphor for unified race and cultural heritage. The author, by
implying that people all have white teeth, despite different forms and faiths, illustrates a unified picture of a diversified race and cultural heritage.
Indeed, race and cultural heritage are significant factors in the lives and experiences of the characters in White Teeth. The novel "tells the story of three
different families: the Chalfens, Bowdens, and Iqbals. All have been placed into the multicultural setting of London, England where characters question
their cultural practices and identities" (Thomas 15). The Iqbal family in London have been assimilated and integrated, still the first... Show more content

This was because they were born in the country their parents immigrated to and thus should assimilate easily. Yet, they were seen as strangers of the
society regardless of their citizenship. "Their identity [was] questioned [simply] due to their ethnicity" (Abrahamsson 15). In the novel, the Iqbal
family, hoping that one of their children can be raised up according to traditional Islamic values, sent one of the twins, Magid, back to Bangladesh, so
that he would become "a real Bengali, a proper Muslim" (Smith 179). However, he felt "the feeling of belonging nowhere that comes to people who
belong everywhere"(Abrahamsson 16). He then responded to the conflict by mimicking everything that he considered English so that he could fit in.
For instance, he began to call Alsana "mum" instead of "amma" and himself "Mark Smith" among his friends. His parents have hoped that he could
continue the Bengali tradition; however, in reality, his education in Bangladesh ironically made Magid discover his "Englishness" rather than his
Bengali roots, and eventually returned to Britain as "more English than the English" (Smith

Heritgae Museum Innovation
The Impact of Innovation on Heritgae Museum's identities
Sophia Borissenko, 126127973, sbor758@aucklanduni.co.nz
The purpose of this study is to define and examine the range design requirements for a variety of case studies on heritage museums with modern
intervention, each of which has a different type: internal intervention, addition or integration. In doing so, an analysis of the impact of the case by case
design requirements that the innovation has on the building's idenity can be made. Furthermore, the literature review will highlight the fact that there
are similarities and differences while finally considering the notion that comparisons and commendalities could be made and will be further explored.

The aim was to preserve the architectural integrity of the ex–isting building (Stott, 2014). The proposed design hides underground beneath the existing
footprint of the museum, which acts as a landmark for the ar–chitecturally conservative city. Ashley Hahn says, "the expansion is by excavation, and
removing ob–structions inserted into the museum's original de–sign, which allow for major improvements to light, circulation, and exhibition space."
These are the main design requirements of which the project is based. In other areas, Gehry added simple sand–stone–clad stair enclosures to
accommodate mod–ern safety regulations (Hahn, 2014). He began by studying the DNA of the building. He then looked at the significant assets that
the original architects provided to create a strong entry sequence and cir–culation pattern. The aim of this is to connect the new to the old giving the
impression that the mu–seum was of one harmonious design (Stott,

A Brief Note On The Conservation Of Ruins
CONSERVATION OF RUINS A heritage ruin is defined as a disused and incomplete place comes in all shapes and sizes, that through abandonment,
redundancy or condition, usually no longer maintained and unlikely to serves its original function or purpose other than interpretation (Australian
Heritage Council, 2013). Rizzi, added the definition of ruin from architectural point of view: 'A building which having lost a substantial part of its
architectural form has ceased to function as such. Elementary, but full of implications: a building that has lost its natural defences (roof, windows,
plasters, etc), unarmed against the ravages of atmospheric agents and consequently more vulnerable to the destructive effect of time; A building that
has stopped to fulfill its functions, to shelter human activities and which, in a sense, has begun its journey towards progressive decline and final
disappearance'. (Rizzi 2007, p.xx). Although the term "ruins" implies the abandoned condition of the building materials, this condition does not
resemble the loss of heritage values embedded to it (Australian Heritage Council, 2013). For this reason, it is obvious that heritage ruins are equally as
important as any other historic building survived. It is the evidence of past human activity; a "shared resources" that retain important heritage values,
and potentially possess tangible and intangible heritage attributes (Drury and McPherson 2008, Australian Heritage Council 2013). During the last

Everyday Use By Alice Walker
Alice Walker's "Everyday Use" is a short story included in her collection In Love and Trouble published in 1973. The story's setting takes place in the
Deep South during the Civil Rights Movement in the 1960s as many "blacks" were struggling to define their cultural identities (White). Traditions and
culture in "Everyday Use" is portrayed contrastingly between Ms. Johnson and Maggie, who still follow rural black cultural of the south and Dee who
has newly adopted a "native African" culture. An encounter over the use of quilts simplifies into two different interpretations of culture. Walker uses
symbolism and contrasting characters to portray these interpretations and implies that culture and heritage are a part of everyday life.

Walker is implying that Mama is comfortable with herself and accepts the reality of her body. Mrs. Johnson is at home with herself and through this
short description Walker implies Mama's acceptance and comfort in traditional ways and where she stands in relation to culture (Velazquez).
Comparatively, Mrs. Johnson's timid, maladjusted, young daughter, Maggie, is like her mother. Mama describes Maggie as a "lame animal". After
being left with an ugly scare from a childhood fire, she lives at home under the protection of Mama, untouched by society. Her solitude and lack of
education have left Maggie adversely shy, but Mama is plain–spoken about Maggie's problems. "Sometimes Maggie reads to me. She stumbles along
good naturedly but can't see well. She knows she is not bright. Like good looks and money, quickness passes her by" (Walker, 521). Maggie
represents purity and innocence and Mama has sympathy for her daughter. Maggie is much like her mother and traditions of their heritage have been
passed down to Maggie through Mama such as learning how to quilt.
On the other hand, Dee is the opposite of Maggie. She is characterized by attractiveness, desire, and education. Her education is most important in
characterizing Dee and essentially shapes her opposing values which separate her from her family. Mama comments on Dee's education several times:
"She used to read to us without pity; forcing words, lies, and other folks' habits... She washed us in a

The Chicago Teachers Union And Chicago Public Schools
Georgis, Donnell, Mike, Moose
For the second time in almost 4 years, over 350,000 Chicago Public School Students may not be able to go to school because of the CTU Strike that is
currently in progress today (The Washington Post). The issue between the Chicago Teachers Union and Chicago Public Schools has not been solved yet
due to disagreements about the income received. The Chicago Teachers Union has made offers to school administrations; however, the responses
were not in their favor. The union has been in progress of agreeing on a contract "since November 2011, [and the strike that occurred at the time]
was the first to hit the Windy City in 25 years" (Liebelson). The issue must have erupted due to a misconception or a realization of problems
occurring. Chicago Teachers Union choosing to strike does not affect charter schools since they are not a part of Chicago Public Schools. The issue
of school strikes can be fixed by increasing the budgets and providing useful resources to teachers in order to improve the level of education.
The Chicago Teachers Union (CTU) Strike in 2012 affected every single Chicago Public School and their Students in 2012. The strike affected about
600 public schools which is over 350, 000 students. The CTU began negotiating their contract with CPS in November of 2011, but their demands were
not met. Since the negotiating did not solve the issue, the Chicago Teachers Union chose to organize a strike for the first time in Chicago in 25 years.

Growing Up Research Paper
Growing up in Theresa was an experience that will live with me until the day I die. Theresa is a town with a population of roughly 2,000 people
and it is very rural. Theresa is a blue collar community where everyone works hard and everyone plays hard. I saw this 24/7 at home. It was a small
town. Everyone knew what was going on with everything in the town. The town of Theresa was basically one giant family. I went to school their from
Kindergarten through 4th grade. The school was three blocks from my house and I would walk to school and back every single day. I usually had
people who would walk with me. Some of those people I am still friends with to this very day. This was were I got my very first taste of school and

Analysis Of Silko 's Yellow Woman And Walker 's Everyday Use

Have you ever been at Christmas dinner and you were so interested and intrigued by your grandmother 's story that you wish you could place
yourself in her shoes right then and there? Well these two stories that I am going to analyze will do just that. I will prove that Silko's Yellow
Woman and Walker's Everyday Use are inherently drawn to traditions of the past. First, I will show how identity is a common factor in both stories
and plays such a large role in connecting the main characters and their past traditions. Second, I will illustrate how both stories are linked to
symbolism, which will give proof to my claim that they are inherently drawn to their past traditions. Finally, I will show that the use of irony plays a

An interesting note which I will bring up later to give proof to my claim, is that when Walker was 8 years old, she was shot in the eye with a BB gun.
After the incident, she became very self–conscience and felt like she did not fit in with the world around her. This helped her find her calling in
writing. As I noted in my thesis, I believe identity plays a very significant role in both of these short stories. Specifically, I believe identity is the
primary theme which inherently draws the characters in these stories to traditions of their past. In Silko's Yellow Woman, identity was the main
internal conflict for the "yellow woman." From the story we know that the yellow woman was a daughter, mother, and a wife. In addition, we see that
the yellow woman makes references to the stories that her grandfather used to tell her. This clearly illustrates that her heritage, culture, and family play a
huge role in her life. For example: "My old grandpa liked to tell those stories best. There is one about Badger and Coyote who went hunting and
were gone all day, and when the sun was going down they found a house. There was a girl living there alone and she had light hair and eyes and she
told them they could sleep with her. Coyote wanted to be with her all night so he sent Badger into a prairie–dog hole, telling him he thought he seen

Record making and the historic environment
Restoration of lakeshmaswara temple, Gadag,Karnataka
A record of a historic building or a site is an exponential aid in project planning or implementation. This involves a range of overlapping and mutual
activities. A thorough analysis and interpretation of historical elements of the buildings will help understand the process of decay and development to
its context. An uninformed resource cannot be effectively managed. For repair and maintenance of historical building its necessary to document both
the original state and the process of restoration as a record, particularly where an element or a structure of the building is removed or reconstructed as
a process of conservation.
Practitioners often collaborate, insights are generated by various specialists such as photographers, cadd technicians, surveyors etc, the records are
promptly shared and integrated as a consolidated document. In circumstances, the combination of all records is meticulously checked for accuracy as a

The Creators Of Salt Of The Earth
The creators of Salt of the Earth "had a consciousness of radical activism" (Aptheker 2015). Paul Jarrico, Michael Wilson, and Herbert J. Biberman
made connections between the Cold War anti–union sentiment and what was happening in the lives of the community at Hanover, New Mexico
(Balthasar 353). "Salt fuses the antiracist, anti imperialist sensibility...with the central popular front icon and narrative form– the strike tale. In this
sense Salt is not simply an expansion of a 1930s political aesthetic; it is the fulfillment of it" (Balthasar 356). This included thinking about how
different forms of oppression impact people. Their final film implicitly critiques the United States' imperialist policies and treatment of minority groups
(Balthasar 355), a dangerous move in the era of high tensions due to the red scare. This, along with affiliations with the Hollywood Anti–Nazi League
(HANL) made them targets of the United States government (Balthasar 354). Their careers had been destroyed, since no one wanted to make
themselves a target of the U.S. by being friendly with people that were accused of being communists, and their film was blacklisted. The leading
actress, Rosaura Revualtas, who had already radically starred in what is recognized as the first lesbian film (Aptheker), also faced punishment for

The last straw which led to the demise of these two CPA firm were PTL club to L&H and Enron to Anderson. PTL Club had a very weak internal

4) AU Section 560 defines Subsequent Events as "events or transactions occur subsequent to the balance–sheet date, but prior to the issuance of the
financial statements, that has a material effect on the financial statements and therefore require adjustment or disclosure in the statements."(AU Section

The time line of H&L's audit of PTL Club is: End of fiscal year (May 31, 1984), Audit Completion Date (Dual dated as August 31, 1984 and
October 24, 1984). Based on the timeline and the above definition of subsequent events, I believe that it is a subsequent event. But whether Deloitte
needed to evaluate the sales occurring after the balance sheet date of May 31, 1984 depends on the materiality of the over sales occurring during
May 31, 1984 and October 24, 1984. It was said that over sales occurred shortly after May 31, 1984. Then how big was the over sales between May 31,

The Use Of Irony In Everyday Use By Alice Walker
In the story "Everyday Use," Alice Walker deals with a young woman who is trying to find her place in her own heritage. "Everyday Use," is narrated
by the mother or Mama, an African–American woman living in the deep South of Rural Georgia with one of her two daughters. The family is living
in very poor conditions, they do not have fancy things, and the mother does all the work herself. The story begins with Mama and Maggie awaiting
on Dee, a college student, to arrive at home from college. When Dee went off to college she thought that her heritage was old and out of style, but
when she came back home for a visit she insists on taking many things from home. Dee also changed her name to Wangero, so she would not have the
same name as someone else in her family. She wants these different artifacts of her heritage because she wants to show them off for fashion and use
them for decorations. Dee points out the things that she thinks will stand out the most, such as the quilt, dashers, and the benches. Mama or Mrs.
Johnson, does not allow Dee to take anything but the dashers. She knows that Dee will not respect the things that their ancestors made. Mama and
Maggie respect their heritage very much and does not want anyone to use the artifacts in the wrong way. In the short story "Everyday Use," Alice
Walker applies the literary technique of irony to emphasize heritage as part of one daily life. The Johnson family has many problems throughout
the household. Mrs. Johnson has a harsh and difficult life; however, her daughters does not make it any better. Mama does not have a lot to show
for, but what she does have she appreciates and cares for it very much. The biggest problem would be that Dee does not respect her heritage and does
not want to live at home. Their home was not that nice, there were many things wrong with it, but that is where it shows your culture and heritage of
your past. Dee left home because she did not like the way her mama was living, she went off to college to try to better herself. Maggie, the youngest
daughter, is a very dull and unattractive girl. Walker writes,
Have you ever seen a lame animal, perhaps a dog run over by some careless person rich enough to own a car, sidle up to someone who is

Identification by definition is the state of being identified, which means the characteristics and feature that set you aside from everyone else. Question
is: What makes an identity? Is it the heritage of our parents? The people we interact with? Or how about the decisions we make on a daily basis? Each
of these are components to our identities in different manners though they each have different levels of impact upon us. Depending on the person,
everyone has different opinions as to how important their identity is. Some may say that their past identity is not of importance to them because they
relate to who they have become throughout time and others tend to place importance of where they come from. In his book, In the Name of ... Show

Enrolling to Heritage University I wasn't sure what to expect. While obtaining my Associate of Arts degree at Yakima Valley Community College my

Cultural Heritage Protection During Armed Conflict
Introduction The destruction of cultural heritage during armed conflict has become the forefront issue within the international discourse on its legal
protection in the last several decades. Many scholars and professionals have contributed to the development of international legal instruments
concerning cultural heritage protection. This thesis analyzes the existing international legal instruments to demonstrate their practical application, or
lack there of, in recent armed conflict situations vis–aМЂ–vis the changing paradigm in the execution of war. The complexity of the issue of law and
cultural heritage protection during armed conflict is that it involves a variety of disciplines: anthropology, archeology, architecture, conservation, law,
international affairs, politics and philosophy among others. Therefore when addressing the issue, all disciplines, as well as the many stakeholders
involved, must be considered and challenged. Nevertheless, this thesis focuses on a legal analysis of cultural heritage protection during armed conflict
to establish the importance that cultural heritage has on humanity at large and to emphasize the role of the international community in its safeguarding.
The conceptual basis of this thesis is cultural heritage, therefore a critical analysis of the ideology associated with the terms, culture and heritage, is
fundamental to understanding their development throughout time and within international legal instruments. The first chapter of this

Symbolism and Theme in Everyday Use
The short story Everyday Use by Alice Walker differentiates between a fake and a real heritage. To illustrate her point she uses one family consisting
of a mother and her two daughters and the way each of them views their ancestry and heritage. Through the behavior of these three people Walker is
able to clearly show the little things that separate a real heritage from the assumed fake mask. During the time of many positive changes to the lives of
black people across the America, the author illustrates what the true African American heritage should look like, compared to empty claims by those
who have no understanding it.
The first and perhaps the least complex of the symbols in the story is Mama's yard. In the very beginning of the story ... Show more content on

At the same time, judging from the way that Dee acts throughout her visit, such bonds to one's heritage can be easily broken or even completely
destroyed. And when these bonds are finally destroyed it becomes impossible for people like Dee to understand the meaning of such little objects
like the quilts in much the same way as it is impossible for her to even understand the origins and the legacy of her name. Again the history behind
the quilts is really important so Mama describes more of it: "Bits and pieces of Grandpa Jarrell's paisley shirts. And one teeny faded blue piece,
about the size of a penny matchbox, that was from Great Grandpa Ezra's uniform that he wore in the Civil War" (495). Made out of many small
pieces of Maggie's and Dee's ancestors' clothes, these quilts visually display the history of their family, including all of the struggles such as war,
racism and poverty experienced by its members over last century. What makes these quilts even more valuable and important is the fact that because of
her poverty Mama considers her heritage, contained in the things like these quilts, as the most important material object in her possession. Therefore
she decides that the best way to honor this heritage would be to pass them to Maggie to be used like they were intended to by those who made the
quilts and the legacy contained inside of them. The quilts then summarize the great and long heritage, passed on

Analysis Of A Pair Of Tickets By Amy Tan
"A Pair of Tickets" is a short essay in which Amy Tan, the author, portrays how a photograph can be used as a time capsule. June May, Tan's main
character, experiences the new view of herself rather than the blindness she had to her culture before her mother's death. Before her mother, Suyuan,
dies she predicted that one day, something would trigger the connection to her heritage little did she know it would come with devastating news.
Through her worldly travels to China to find her long–lost sisters and tell them about their mothers passing she also finds the heritage and piece of
identity that has been absent from her life. The plot structure and pacing create the stories main theme: people are often unable or unwilling to see
themselves as they really.
Although this short essay is based on a true incident in Tan's life it does contain pieces of fairytales and modernism. The story is revealed by Tan
through first person narrative. The narrator, June May, is speaking about the events that she is experiencing. It begins with the memory of when she
was in high school and how she was explaining to her mother that she did not feel Chinese (paragraphs 1–4). The narrator only knows of the situations
she has been told about and experienced. Tan explains exactly how the reader is feeling along with giving the reader hints through June Mays's actions
and words.
During her thirty–six years of life June May has felt lost in her identity. When she learns of her mother's death, she realized "I've never really known
what it means to be Chinese" (paragraph 5). Now there was no longer anyone who believed "Someday you will see... it's in your blood, waiting to be
let go" (paragraph 4). June May acknowledges the transformation she will go through during her journey to China. This suggests that the reader is
open to change; she believes that this is her way to honor her mother by reuniting her with her twin daughters. June May wants to tell them about their
mother's death but she then realizes that the scene she has dreamed of so many times is not going to go as she once wanted (paragraph 18). Then, in a
surprising twist, everything she thought she knew about the meeting would be revealed to her as wrong. The meeting was a long

The Importance Of Cultural Heritage
In an era of globalization governed by financial targets and money return, cultural heritage being an important humanity asset becomes victim of
oppressive and destroying actions meant to institute economic and social progress. Cultural destructiveness and ignorance are observed in Banksy's
graffiti of a worker jet blasting over prehistoric art from a city wall. As progress along with mass and cyber media tend to gain territory and people's
sympathy, we must be responsible to safeguard the cultural legacy which is the basis of humanity. Marcus Garvey said, "A people without the
knowledge of their past history, origin, and culture is like a tree without roots." (Brainy Quote). Being unique and irreplaceable, cultural heritage keeps
us attached to our religion, customs and ancestors and charges us to preserve it for the future generations. However, culture loss or deculturation
becomes a living threat caused by rapid modernization. Culture cannot fit itself in a money–oriented and fast paced world where people have a
tendency to become materialistic. Globalization as a promoter of integration of societies and new opportunities is in fact a culture killer which causes
loss of identity. How can antique or medieval art protect itself or withstand the contemporary art when our society insists to take the plunge into
globalization? Murzacov 2 A vivid example of modernization taking over the cultural heritage is the city of Manilla, Philippines presented by the

Heritage parks aim is to expand the business and their objectives are to fill up all their business and room spaces, increase the awareness of the
existence of the hotel and to increase the wedding trade as well as other special occasions. The achievement of these aims and objectives may be
supported by the online presence because tourists and companies on business trips may be looking for a hotel in the area that specialises in various
activities. Since the hotel has a wide range of amenities they can cover the majority of their customers' interests and for business meetings the hotel has
rooms especially designed for the purpose.
The online presence of the hotel means that the customers can actually see pictures of the hotel, leisure centre, bedrooms, restaurant and business
rooms giving the customer an idea from where they are sat rather than having to visit the hotel first. Online booking is effective as it is a much
quicker way of bringing money into the business. Customer feedback and guest books will give new customers a brief view on what previous
customers have thought of the hotel and whether it is a good hotel or not.

The Nomination Process For A Site
The nomination process for a site to be considered on the World Heritage List is comprised of five steps, which include the tentative list, nomination
file, advisory bodies, World Heritage Committee, and criteria for selection. The tentative list is where a country makes an inventory of all cultural and
natural heritages within the site 's boundaries. This tentative list may be submitted for inscription for the next five to ten years, and can be updated at
any time. This step needs to take place before the World Heritage Committee can consider a site for inscription on the World Heritage. The nomination
file includes all necessary documentation and maps of the site. This nomination can then be submitted to the World Heritage Centre for review. Once
complete the file can then be sent to the appropriate Advisory Bodies for evaluation. There are two Advisory Bodies. Both of which evaluate a site that
is being nominated, and include the International Council on Monuments and Sites (ICOMOS) and the World Conservation Union (IUCN). These
committees provide evaluations on a site. There is a third Advisory Body known as the International Centre for the Study of the Preservation and
Restoration of Cultural Property (ICCROM). This last group provides expert advice as to the conservation of cultural sites, along with training
activities. The World Heritage Committee will then make a final decision on whether a site will receive an inscription. This committee meets once a

Introduction
The illegal trade in antiquities or 'cultural property, as defined in the 1954 Hague Convention as objects of artistic, historical or archaeological
interest (appendix1), has become one of the largest and most lucrative criminal activities. Carried out on a transnational scale, it is believed to be the
third most common form of trafficking after drugs and arms (ISPAC, 2008). Despite the enormity of this problem however, it is tackled with only a
fraction of resources afforded to other criminal acts (Bazley, 2010). This is a worrying trend perhaps, given profits are often channelled into additional
areas of organised crime, including narcotics and more recently facilitation of terrorist movements (Interpol, 2014). The aim of this assignment
therefore is to explore this crime further, focussing primarily on stolen archaeological artefacts and identifying some key reasons for its proliferation. It
will also look at international laws and legal instruments currently in place, recognising any failings or cross–jurisdictional challenges that may

An Analysis Of Alice Walker And Kate Chopin
Heritage, a lot of people see it as being only the past, with no significance to their everyday lives whatsoever, others see it as merely objects and
money passed down from older generations to their younger generations, but really heritage means much more than that. Ones heritage is the
lessons learned from elders and passed down to their children and grandchildren to help them not make the same mistakes they made before,
heritage is the roots that makes a person who they are. The world without recollection of its's heritage, is a world without progress, a world that
only stands still waiting for the same missteps to cycle back around. A person with no knowledge of their heritage is a person with no knowledge of
themselves, and not knowing one 's self can lead to mishaps directing that individual down a path they would otherwise be able to avoid with a keen
understanding of where they originate. Alice Walker and Kate Chopin both touch on the struggles and outcomes of not knowing or taking advantage
of one 's heritage through their stories "Everyday Use" and "Desiree's baby." In both of the stories, the antagonist Dee/Wangero, and Armand has
problems with whom they truly are because of their lack of knowledge and acceptance of who they truly are. The misfortune of not appreciating one 's
heritage is clearly identified in Alice Walker 's "Everyday Use." The character used to demonstrate the tragedies that follows one who doesn't treasure
their heritage throughout the story is

Everyday Use Heritage
In "Everyday Use" by Alice Walker, there is a clear depiction of heritage and what it is; equally, there is also the image of how it may be construed.
In the story, the reader is introduced into the life of an African American family who live in a small house and struggle financially. It is a life that has
been lived by many throughout in history. Through the use of symbolism, Walker interprets the 'American Dream' as unique to each individual and the
possibility to lose it in the chaos of life. Immediately, the reader is introduced to a family who doesn't live at the top of the socioeconomic pyramid. A
family who, although live comfortably compared to many, still maintain the ideals of which they came from. Maggie and Mama live ... Show more

Collectively, these will lead to more opportunities for prosperity and success. These ideals are rooted from the Declaration of Independence, which
states that, "All men are created equal" with the right to "Life, Liberty, and the pursuit of Happiness." It is clear to see that in "Everyday Use,"
siblings of the same family have completely opposite outcomes in life. As Dee chooses to live a different life of that which she was brought into, and
Maggie's choosing the path of inheritance, culture, and tradition. In the eyes of the world, it would seem that Dee is living the "American Dream";
however, in the eyes of her family, Maggie is the one living the dream. She is true to their culture and traditions, which they hope she will keep alive.
This is perhaps the most important thing that the family has to pass on. She may not be intelligent in the sense of learning, but Maggie has the ability to

Alice Walker's Themes In Everyday Use By Alice Walker
Alice Walkers short story, "Everyday Use," is a story that focuses on ones heritage, dignity and to figure out the person that one really is. The story
is narrated by Mama, who is Dee and Maggies mother. The setting of the story mostly takes in place in the yard of the house between the 1960s
and 1970s. Upon reading the story, the reader is given a clear description of what the yard is like. Mama tells us, "A yard like this is more
comfortable than most people know. It is not just a yard. It is like an extended living room. When the hard clay is swept clean as a floor and the fine
sand around the edges lined with tiny, irregular grooves, anyone can come and sit and look up into the elm tree and wait for the breezes that never

At one point Dee started pointing out things that she was going to take back with her to decorate her house with. One of the items was a butter
churn that had been passed along many generations and had imprints of the people who had used it. Mama said, "You didn't even have to look close
to see where hands pushing the dasher up and down to make butter had left a kind of sink in the wood. In fact, there were a lot of small sinks; you
could see where thumbs and fingers had sunk into the wood." Dee wasn't aware of how long this churn had been the family which shows how much
she wanted to run away from her heritage. One of the most important symbols used in "Everyday Use" was the quilts, which to Dee had no
significant value before she had gone off to college; however, towards the end of the story Dee requested to have the quilts after leaving them behind
when going off to college, saying that she was the only one who could "appreciate" them. Maggie being as kind–hearted and shy as she was said that
Dee could have the quilts, Mama refused saying that she had already promised Maggie the quilts. The quilts symbolize the family heritage and what
the family went through during slavery. Mama says, "In both of [the quilts] were scraps of dresses Grandma Dee had worn fifty and more years

Should Culture Be A Commodity
Should culture be a commodity? In other words, should culture be able to be bought and sold for a profit? Cultural artifacts, by any meaningful
measure, currently are a commodity. They are bought and sold on the art market in places as far and wide as legitimate auctions in London or New
York to sale on the thriving black market trade currently funding a brutal terrorist organization in Syria and Iraq. A more famous example, ofculture
acting as commodity, took place in 2007 when the Guennol Lioness, a famous Mesopotamian statue, was sold in Sotheby 's for an astounding fifty
seven point two million dollars. It was bought by a private collector and is now, of course, out of the public eye. Coming back to the central question,
I am of the opinion that culture should not be a commodity due to its effect on the context of the objects as well as its effect on the cultural value of the
artifacts to the various stakeholders in question. If the buying and selling of cultural artifacts does one thing well, it is the destruction of context. In
The Ethics of Archaeology (2006), Robert Layton and Gillian Wallace state that "the crime of the undocumented antiquities trade is its undocumented
destruction of context" (p. 57). As they point out, this destruction of context can be simple and in some ways benign. Something as simple as the
removal of a Byzantine coin being removed from its original context "in a money pouch" to "a museum case or a collector 's coin display board"

A Study On Urban Conservation
In our twenty–first century, urban conservation has become an inescapable element of the way cities remake themselves ( Pendlebury and Strange,
2011). Since at least the 1960s, urban conservation is a concept that has been with the UK (Rodwell, 2007), but the start of conservation in different
countries has different situation. Compared with the UK conservation, conservation in China begins relatively late. In this essay, the studying area is
in China. By learning from the UK conservation principle, the theoretical knowledge and the practical experience based on the lectures and
references, this essay aims at the actual situation of historic site and discusses the conservation theme for it. A Brief Introduction of the Site At the

Heritage, a Theme in Alice WalkerВґs "Everyday Use
Alice Walker sets "Everyday Use" as a story of a mother and two daughters where the older daughter, Dee, is coming home to visit them after being
away for a while. Walker sets the tone of the story by displaying how poor and uneducated the family is and how Dee while growing up was always
looking for better things never appreciating the aspects of her life. As the story develops, the focus of the story is on a set of quilts made by the
mother from pieces of clothing that belonged to her grandparents and the personal battle of who should really keep them in order to appreciate the
heritage behind them. In "Everyday Use" a person can see how Maggie and Dee differ on the fact that heritage is a characteristic of pride that a person
displays every day of their life versus a fad for a specific period of someone's life.
While growing up Dee was always resentful of the lifestyle that she had as it did not measure to the better things she was always dreaming of.
While the mother recounts the story of when their original house burned to the ground, she mentions how Dee stood there concentrating at the way
the house slowly disappeared in the fire since "she hated the house that much" (Walker 298). This aspect sets the tone of how Dee was never
willing to embody the characteristics of her life growing up, and it can be seen how she was ashamed of where she came from as later she writes her
mother in a letter of how she will always try to visit them, but "she will never bring her

"Everyday Use" by Alice Walker, is a story of a black family composed of a mother and her two daughters: Maggie and Dee. Walker does an excellent
job illustrating her characters. There are all types of characters in this short story from round to static. Dee is a flat character, yet Walker uses Dee's
character to warn people of what might happen if they do not live properly. Walker describes Dee's character as arrogant and selfish, and through
Dee's character one is allowed to perceive the wicked effect of an egotistical world.

Dee does not truly value the heritage, and her interest in the quilts seem to reflect a cultural trend. This cultural trend becomes evident when the mother
says, "I had offered Dee a quilt when she went away to college. Then she had told me they were old–fashioned, out of style"(Walker 96). We learned
early in the story that Dee acquired a style at a young age, and she allowed the world around her to alter and manipulate that style.
Dee believes she is more cultured than her family. She may have more knowledge about different cultures and religions that she learned in school,
but she does not know as much about the family heritage as she thinks she does. For example, when Dee changes her name to "Wangero Leewanika
Kemanjo" she destroys important links to her heritage that she will never understand. Her mother tries to explain to her that her name is significant
because it belonged to particular beloved ones. However, Dee seems to reject the names of her ancestors, yet she is eager to seize their handmade
goods. When Dee realizes she is not going obtain possession of the quilts, she storms out of the house without saying a word. It is apparent that the
only reason for her visit is to get the family heirlooms, not to see the house, her mother, or Maggie.
Maggie is illustrated as Dee's foil. Dee is everything that Maggie cannot be externally. Maggie is implemented into the story to provide a greater

Student Leadership Reflection

  • 1. Student Leadership Reflection Throughout the semester I have learned a lot about my strengths. At first, I had no clue what they were. I also had no clue that they can help explain why certain people work well in a group together or why they don't. My strengths have helped me adjust to life as a college student and even helped me to figure out what I want to do after my college career is over. Events like the Heritage Project, The Student Leadership book, the networking event, and even the peer mentor presentations gave me a lot to think about when considering my future. This class has helped me develop my leadership skills and grow as an Otterbein student by allowing me to better understand myself. Throughout this semester I have encountered many different situations that I have never experienced before. I wasn't hesitant about starting college but once I got here I found it a little overwhelming. I didn't know about many of the resources that are on campus and classes were very different from what I expected them to be. FYS Goal one, found on the strengths reflection paper guidelines is, "To connect you to the resources that promote belonging, wellness, personal development, and success in the first year". I feel as though FYS 1025 has helped me meet that goal because I now know about many of the resources centers here. I learned about them through Jordan's peer mentor moments, whether she was talking about the Center for Student Success or the CCPD. Jordan's peer mentor moments helped me locate the different resource around campus and even understand what they were about. Even though I haven't been to some of them, I was able to help people not in our class find them and know what those resources are about. This has helped me grow as a student because it increases my familiarity with campus and allows me to know that if I have a question there are people that can provide me with information. The course has developed me as a future leader at Otterbein by helping me understand myself. In the beginning I didn't know about strengths. Now that I do, I see why they are important when beginning a new chapter in life. Before starting a project, I now think about how I'm going to accomplish my goals. I use my strategic strength to plan out ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 2. Preserving Historic District Conservation Project A historic district or heritage district is a section of a city which contains older buildings considered valuable for historical or architectural reasons. This definition first appeared in Athens Charter, 1933. In China, any region that is classified as a historical district should contain a group of buildings that have cultural heritage significance with relatively integrated exterior and structures. All of these historic districts are cultural artifacts, and their stories are entwined with relevant human civilization. Thus, for cultural heritage conservation, 99 National Historic and Culturally Famous Towns have been promulgated by Chinese State Council in three groups since 1982. At the same time, different provinces and autonomous regions have also issued their own list of Historical and Culturally Famous communities. However, I considered that during the implementation of promoting historic district conservation project, many people misunderstand the initial purpose and the process of restoration. Therefore, huge numbers of cultural heritages were transformed to "fake antique", and the cultural heritage value of relevant places has been seriously diminished. Currently, historic districts are seriously affected by urban modernization and commercialization. During different parties are willing to take part in relevant conservation project, how to maintain a balance between development and cultural heritage conservation has become one of most popular issue in ... • 3. San JosГ© De Moro's Social Responsibility 1.Introduction of research question (500 words) The territory in which the country of Peru is now located has been uninterruptedly occupied for thousands of years. This continuous human settlement in the area has left us with a vast number of archaeological sites, historic buildings and religious structures. The large number of sites – in addition to the large artifact collections that can be found in the Peruvian museums – creates an almost insurmountable labor for the federal, provincial and local governments, as well as the professionals involved in the various aspects of the preservation of these materials. Despite the richness in its cultural heritage, 9.7% of Peru's 30,973,000 population lives in poverty (Poverty headcount ratio at 2 PPP$ a day). This fact, coupled with the lack of supervision and/or protection of archaeological and historic sites has exposed Peru's cultural heritage to looting and destruction, the illegal occupation of areas designated as national patrimony, illicit trafficking of cultural ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The author believes that while it is a necessary first step towards developing a sustainable plan, the lack of vision and the poor implementation of the proposal leaves the community with an unviable, halfway–done program which does little to engage the community in the preservation of the site. Through the study and review of two specific aspects of San JosГ© de Moro's social responsibility plan: 1. The Modular Museum Program as a heritage tourism tool, and 2. The Development of a Local Identity, it is the purpose of this paper to demonstrate that in order to achieve a sustainable preservation of the site, the local community must be treated as an equal stakeholder and decision–maker. Unfortunately, this has not been the case. 2.Explain the method on how you researched or developed the topic (250 ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 4. Andrew Kennedy 's Article On Credibility Of The Author Article No.: 4 Credibility of the author: The author of this source is Chloe Kennedy, a regarded journalist with over 650 articles written spanning over 16 years. Within this vast experience, she has worked for numerous publications, with the City Messenger, the Leader Messenger, The Advertiser, the News Review Messenger and the Standard Messenger being some of the few. Being so widely read, it is likely that this will increase the reliability of her work; mistakes are less likely where a reputation may be implicated. However, though the City Messenger appears to be a legitimate newspaper, by nature such articles may not always be fully reliable, and this must be taken into consideration. Maggie deserves the quilts because she appreciates the practical value of the items and would naturally use them as they were intended. Like her grandmother, Maggie is a person who values the quilts more as a practical solution for staying warm at night than as folk art which should be displayed in a museum. Dee's thoughts of her simple–minded sister come into full light during a conversation with Momma when her request for the quilts is denied. "Maggie can't appreciate these quilts! She'd probably be backward enough to put them the everyday use. I reckon she would," Momma replied, "God knows I been saving 'em long enough with nobody using 'em. I hope she will." (DiYanni 748) With little or no money during tough times, poorer families have often had to be more self–reliant where learning to sew was a skill that was valued and passed down to the younger generation. Maggie embraced this skill while her more ambitious sister did not see the value in learning such an ordinary task. "She can always make more, "Momma said, "Maggie knows how to ... • 8. Multiculturalism In White Teeth Thesis White Teeth. The title of Zadie Smith's novel exquisitely expresses the author's use of metaphor for unified race and cultural heritage. The author, by implying that people all have white teeth, despite different forms and faiths, illustrates a unified picture of a diversified race and cultural heritage. Indeed, race and cultural heritage are significant factors in the lives and experiences of the characters in White Teeth. The novel "tells the story of three different families: the Chalfens, Bowdens, and Iqbals. All have been placed into the multicultural setting of London, England where characters question their cultural practices and identities" (Thomas 15). In the novel, the Iqbal family, hoping that one of their children can be raised up according to traditional Islamic values, sent one of the twins, Magid, back to Bangladesh, so that he would become "a real Bengali, a proper Muslim" (Smith 179). However, he felt "the feeling of belonging nowhere that comes to people who belong everywhere"(Abrahamsson 16). He then responded to the conflict by mimicking everything that he considered English so that he could fit in. For instance, he began to call Alsana "mum" instead of "amma" and himself "Mark Smith" among his friends. His parents have hoped that he could continue the Bengali tradition; however, in reality, his education in Bangladesh ironically made Magid discover his "Englishness" rather than his Bengali roots, and eventually returned to Britain as "more English than the English" (Smith ... In doing so, an analysis of the impact of the case by case design requirements that the innovation has on the building's idenity can be made. • 10. A Brief Note On The Conservation Of Ruins CONSERVATION OF RUINS A heritage ruin is defined as a disused and incomplete place comes in all shapes and sizes, that through abandonment, redundancy or condition, usually no longer maintained and unlikely to serves its original function or purpose other than interpretation (Australian Heritage Council, 2013). Rizzi, added the definition of ruin from architectural point of view: 'A building which having lost a substantial part of its architectural form has ceased to function as such. Elementary, but full of implications: a building that has lost its natural defences (roof, windows, plasters, etc), unarmed against the ravages of atmospheric agents and consequently more vulnerable to the destructive effect of time; A building that has stopped to fulfill its functions, to shelter human activities and which, in a sense, has begun its journey towards progressive decline and final disappearance'. (Rizzi 2007, p.xx). Although the term "ruins" implies the abandoned condition of the building materials, this condition does not resemble the loss of heritage values embedded to it (Australian Heritage Council, 2013). For this reason, it is obvious that heritage ruins are equally as important as any other historic building survived. It is the evidence of past human activity; a "shared resources" that retain important heritage values, and potentially possess tangible and intangible heritage attributes (Drury and McPherson 2008, Australian Heritage Council 2013). • 11. Everyday Use By Alice Walker Alice Walker's "Everyday Use" is a short story included in her collection In Love and Trouble published in 1973. The story's setting takes place in the Deep South during the Civil Rights Movement in the 1960s as many "blacks" were struggling to define their cultural identities (White). Traditions and culture in "Everyday Use" is portrayed contrastingly between Ms. Johnson and Maggie, who still follow rural black cultural of the south and Dee who has newly adopted a "native African" culture. An encounter over the use of quilts simplifies into two different interpretations of culture. Walker uses symbolism and contrasting characters to portray these interpretations and implies that culture and heritage are a part of everyday life. To begin ... Mrs. Johnson is at home with herself and through this short description Walker implies Mama's acceptance and comfort in traditional ways and where she stands in relation to culture (Velazquez). Comparatively, Mrs. Johnson's timid, maladjusted, young daughter, Maggie, is like her mother. Mama describes Maggie as a "lame animal". After being left with an ugly scare from a childhood fire, she lives at home under the protection of Mama, untouched by society. Her solitude and lack of education have left Maggie adversely shy, but Mama is plain–spoken about Maggie's problems. "Sometimes Maggie reads to me. She stumbles along good naturedly but can't see well. She knows she is not bright. Like good looks and money, quickness passes her by" (Walker, 521). Maggie represents purity and innocence and Mama has sympathy for her daughter. Maggie is much like her mother and traditions of their heritage have been passed down to Maggie through Mama such as learning how to quilt. On the other hand, Dee is the opposite of Maggie. She is characterized by attractiveness, desire, and education. Her education is most important in characterizing Dee and essentially shapes her opposing values which separate her from her family. The issue between the Chicago Teachers Union and Chicago Public Schools has not been solved yet due to disagreements about the income received. The Chicago Teachers Union has made offers to school administrations; however, the responses were not in their favor. After the incident, she became very self–conscience and felt like she did not fit in with the world around her. This helped her find her calling in writing. As I noted in my thesis, I believe identity plays a very significant role in both of these short stories. Specifically, I believe identity is the primary theme which inherently draws the characters in these stories to traditions of their past. In Silko's Yellow Woman, identity was the main internal conflict for the "yellow woman." From the story we know that the yellow woman was a daughter, mother, and a wife. In addition, we see that the yellow woman makes references to the stories that her grandfather used to tell her. This clearly illustrates that her heritage, culture, and family play a huge role in her life. For example: "My old grandpa liked to tell those stories best. There is one about Badger and Coyote who went hunting and were gone all day, and when the sun was going down they found a house. There was a girl living there alone and she had light hair and eyes and she told them they could sleep with her. • 19. The Use Of Irony In Everyday Use By Alice Walker In the story "Everyday Use," Alice Walker deals with a young woman who is trying to find her place in her own heritage. "Everyday Use," is narrated by the mother or Mama, an African–American woman living in the deep South of Rural Georgia with one of her two daughters. The family is living in very poor conditions, they do not have fancy things, and the mother does all the work herself. The story begins with Mama and Maggie awaiting on Dee, a college student, to arrive at home from college. When Dee went off to college she thought that her heritage was old and out of style, but when she came back home for a visit she insists on taking many things from home. Dee also changed her name to Wangero, so she would not have the same name as someone else in her family. She wants these different artifacts of her heritage because she wants to show them off for fashion and use them for decorations. Dee points out the things that she thinks will stand out the most, such as the quilt, dashers, and the benches. Mama or Mrs. Johnson, does not allow Dee to take anything but the dashers. She knows that Dee will not respect the things that their ancestors made. Mama and Maggie respect their heritage very much and does not want anyone to use the artifacts in the wrong way. In the short story "Everyday Use," Alice Walker applies the literary technique of irony to emphasize heritage as part of one daily life. The Johnson family has many problems throughout the household. Mrs. Johnson has a harsh and difficult life; however, her daughters does not make it any better. Mama does not have a lot to show for, but what she does have she appreciates and cares for it very much. The biggest problem would be that Dee does not respect her heritage and does not want to live at home. Their home was not that nice, there were many things wrong with it, but that is where it shows your culture and heritage of your past. Dee left home because she did not like the way her mama was living, she went off to college to try to better herself. Maggie, the youngest daughter, is a very dull and unattractive girl. Cultural Heritage Protection During Armed Conflict Introduction The destruction of cultural heritage during armed conflict has become the forefront issue within the international discourse on its legal protection in the last several decades. Many scholars and professionals have contributed to the development of international legal instruments concerning cultural heritage protection. The complexity of the issue of law and cultural heritage protection during armed conflict is that it involves a variety of disciplines: anthropology, archeology, architecture, conservation, law, international affairs, politics and philosophy among others. • 25. Analysis Of A Pair Of Tickets By Amy Tan "A Pair of Tickets" is a short essay in which Amy Tan, the author, portrays how a photograph can be used as a time capsule. June May, Tan's main character, experiences the new view of herself rather than the blindness she had to her culture before her mother's death. Before her mother, Suyuan, dies she predicted that one day, something would trigger the connection to her heritage little did she know it would come with devastating news. Through her worldly travels to China to find her long–lost sisters and tell them about their mothers passing she also finds the heritage and piece of identity that has been absent from her life. The plot structure and pacing create the stories main theme: people are often unable or unwilling to see themselves as they really. Although this short essay is based on a true incident in Tan's life it does contain pieces of fairytales and modernism. The story is revealed by Tan through first person narrative. The narrator, June May, is speaking about the events that she is experiencing. It begins with the memory of when she was in high school and how she was explaining to her mother that she did not feel Chinese (paragraphs 1–4). The narrator only knows of the situations she has been told about and experienced. Tan explains exactly how the reader is feeling along with giving the reader hints through June Mays's actions and words. During her thirty–six years of life June May has felt lost in her identity. When she learns of her mother's death, she realized "I've never really known what it means to be Chinese" (paragraph 5). Now there was no longer anyone who believed "Someday you will see... it's in your blood, waiting to be let go" (paragraph 4). June May acknowledges the transformation she will go through during her journey to China. This suggests that the reader is open to change; she believes that this is her way to honor her mother by reuniting her with her twin daughters. June May wants to tell them about their mother's death but she then realizes that the scene she has dreamed of so many times is not going to go as she once wanted (paragraph 18). • 26. The Importance Of Cultural Heritage In an era of globalization governed by financial targets and money return, cultural heritage being an important humanity asset becomes victim of oppressive and destroying actions meant to institute economic and social progress. Cultural destructiveness and ignorance are observed in Banksy's graffiti of a worker jet blasting over prehistoric art from a city wall. As progress along with mass and cyber media tend to gain territory and people's sympathy, we must be responsible to safeguard the cultural legacy which is the basis of humanity. Marcus Garvey said, "A people without the knowledge of their past history, origin, and culture is like a tree without roots." (Brainy Quote). Being unique and irreplaceable, cultural heritage keeps us attached to our religion, customs and ancestors and charges us to preserve it for the future generations. However, culture loss or deculturation becomes a living threat caused by rapid modernization. Culture cannot fit itself in a money–oriented and fast paced world where people have a tendency to become materialistic. Globalization as a promoter of integration of societies and new opportunities is in fact a culture killer which causes loss of identity. How can antique or medieval art protect itself or withstand the contemporary art when our society insists to take the plunge into globalization? Murzacov 2 A vivid example of modernization taking over the cultural heritage is the city of Manilla, Philippines presented by the reporter, Erika ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Since the hotel has a wide range of amenities they can cover the majority of their customers' interests and for business meetings the hotel has rooms especially designed for the purpose. The online presence of the hotel means that the customers can actually see pictures of the hotel, leisure centre, bedrooms, restaurant and business rooms giving the customer an idea from where they are sat rather than having to visit the hotel first. The Nomination Process For A Site The nomination process for a site to be considered on the World Heritage List is comprised of five steps, which include the tentative list, nomination file, advisory bodies, World Heritage Committee, and criteria for selection. The tentative list is where a country makes an inventory of all cultural and natural heritages within the site 's boundaries. This tentative list may be submitted for inscription for the next five to ten years, and can be updated at any time. This step needs to take place before the World Heritage Committee can consider a site for inscription on the World Heritage. The nomination file includes all necessary documentation and maps of the site. This nomination can then be submitted to the World Heritage Centre for review. Once complete the file can then be sent to the appropriate Advisory Bodies for evaluation. There are two Advisory Bodies. Both of which evaluate a site that is being nominated, and include the International Council on Monuments and Sites (ICOMOS) and the World Conservation Union (IUCN). These committees provide evaluations on a site. There is a third Advisory Body known as the International Centre for the Study of the Preservation and Restoration of Cultural Property (ICCROM). This last group provides expert advice as to the conservation of cultural sites, along with training activities. The World Heritage Committee will then make a final decision on whether a site will receive an inscription. This committee meets once a ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Laws & Legislations8–10 3 International Organisations (with list of acronyms) 11–12 Introduction The illegal trade in antiquities or 'cultural property, as defined in the 1954 Hague Convention as objects of artistic, historical or archaeological interest (appendix1), has become one of the largest and most lucrative criminal activities. Carried out on a transnational scale, it is believed to be the third most common form of trafficking after drugs and arms (ISPAC, 2008). Despite the enormity of this problem however, it is tackled with only a fraction of resources afforded to other criminal acts (Bazley, 2010). This is a worrying trend perhaps, given profits are often channelled into additional areas of organised crime, including narcotics and more recently facilitation of terrorist movements (Interpol, 2014). The aim of this assignment therefore is to explore this crime further, focussing primarily on stolen archaeological artefacts and identifying some key reasons for its proliferation. It will also look at international laws and legal instruments currently in place, recognising any failings or cross–jurisdictional challenges that may ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 31. An Analysis Of Alice Walker And Kate Chopin Heritage, a lot of people see it as being only the past, with no significance to their everyday lives whatsoever, others see it as merely objects and money passed down from older generations to their younger generations, but really heritage means much more than that. Ones heritage is the lessons learned from elders and passed down to their children and grandchildren to help them not make the same mistakes they made before, heritage is the roots that makes a person who they are. The world without recollection of its's heritage, is a world without progress, a world that only stands still waiting for the same missteps to cycle back around. A person with no knowledge of their heritage is a person with no knowledge of themselves, and not knowing one 's self can lead to mishaps directing that individual down a path they would otherwise be able to avoid with a keen understanding of where they originate. Alice Walker and Kate Chopin both touch on the struggles and outcomes of not knowing or taking advantage of one 's heritage through their stories "Everyday Use" and "Desiree's baby." In both of the stories, the antagonist Dee/Wangero, and Armand has problems with whom they truly are because of their lack of knowledge and acceptance of who they truly are. The misfortune of not appreciating one 's heritage is clearly identified in Alice Walker 's "Everyday Use." The character used to demonstrate the tragedies that follows one who doesn't treasure their heritage throughout the story is ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

In the story, the reader is introduced into the life of an African American family who live in a small house and struggle financially. It is a life that has been lived by many throughout in history. Through the use of symbolism, Walker interprets the 'American Dream' as unique to each individual and the possibility to lose it in the chaos of life. Alice Walker's Themes In Everyday Use By Alice Walker Alice Walkers short story, "Everyday Use," is a story that focuses on ones heritage, dignity and to figure out the person that one really is. The story is narrated by Mama, who is Dee and Maggies mother. The setting of the story mostly takes in place in the yard of the house between the 1960s and 1970s. Upon reading the story, the reader is given a clear description of what the yard is like. Mama tells us, "A yard like this is more comfortable than most people know. It is not just a yard. It is like an extended living room. One of the items was a butter churn that had been passed along many generations and had imprints of the people who had used it. Mama said, "You didn't even have to look close to see where hands pushing the dasher up and down to make butter had left a kind of sink in the wood. In fact, there were a lot of small sinks; you could see where thumbs and fingers had sunk into the wood." Dee wasn't aware of how long this churn had been the family which shows how much she wanted to run away from her heritage. One of the most important symbols used in "Everyday Use" was the quilts, which to Dee had no significant value before she had gone off to college; however, towards the end of the story Dee requested to have the quilts after leaving them behind when going off to college, saying that she was the only one who could "appreciate" them. Maggie being as kind–hearted and shy as she was said that Dee could have the quilts, Mama refused saying that she had already promised Maggie the quilts. The quilts symbolize the family heritage and what the family went through during slavery. Mama says, "In both of [the quilts] were scraps of dresses Grandma Dee had worn fifty and more years ... • 36. Should Culture Be A Commodity Should culture be a commodity? In other words, should culture be able to be bought and sold for a profit? Cultural artifacts, by any meaningful measure, currently are a commodity. They are bought and sold on the art market in places as far and wide as legitimate auctions in London or New York to sale on the thriving black market trade currently funding a brutal terrorist organization in Syria and Iraq. A more famous example, ofculture acting as commodity, took place in 2007 when the Guennol Lioness, a famous Mesopotamian statue, was sold in Sotheby 's for an astounding fifty seven point two million dollars. It was bought by a private collector and is now, of course, out of the public eye. Coming back to the central question, I am of the opinion that culture should not be a commodity due to its effect on the context of the objects as well as its effect on the cultural value of the artifacts to the various stakeholders in question. If the buying and selling of cultural artifacts does one thing well, it is the destruction of context. In The Ethics of Archaeology (2006), Robert Layton and Gillian Wallace state that "the crime of the undocumented antiquities trade is its undocumented destruction of context" (p. 57). As they point out, this destruction of context can be simple and in some ways benign. Something as simple as the removal of a Byzantine coin being removed from its original context "in a money pouch" to "a museum case or a collector 's coin display board" ... Since at least the 1960s, urban conservation is a concept that has been with the UK (Rodwell, 2007), but the start of conservation in different countries has different situation. Compared with the UK conservation, conservation in China begins relatively late. In this essay, the studying area is in China. • 38. Heritage, a Theme in Alice WalkerВґs "Everyday Use Alice Walker sets "Everyday Use" as a story of a mother and two daughters where the older daughter, Dee, is coming home to visit them after being away for a while. Walker sets the tone of the story by displaying how poor and uneducated the family is and how Dee while growing up was always looking for better things never appreciating the aspects of her life. As the story develops, the focus of the story is on a set of quilts made by the mother from pieces of clothing that belonged to her grandparents and the personal battle of who should really keep them in order to appreciate the heritage behind them. In "Everyday Use" a person can see how Maggie and Dee differ on the fact that heritage is a characteristic of pride that a person displays every day of their life versus a fad for a specific period of someone's life. While growing up Dee was always resentful of the lifestyle that she had as it did not measure to the better things she was always dreaming of. While the mother recounts the story of when their original house burned to the ground, she mentions how Dee stood there concentrating at the way the house slowly disappeared in the fire since "she hated the house that much" (Walker 298). This aspect sets the tone of how Dee was never willing to embody the characteristics of her life growing up, and it can be seen how she was ashamed of where she came from as later she writes her mother in a letter of how she will always try to visit them, but "she will never bring her ... Walker does an excellent job illustrating her characters. There are all types of characters in this short story from round to static. Dee is a flat character, yet Walker uses Dee's character to warn people of what might happen if they do not live properly. Walker describes Dee's character as arrogant and selfish, and through Dee's character one is allowed to perceive the wicked effect of an egotistical world. This cultural trend becomes evident when the mother says, "I had offered Dee a quilt when she went away to college. Then she had told me they were old–fashioned, out of style"(Walker 96). We learned early in the story that Dee acquired a style at a young age, and she allowed the world around her to alter and manipulate that style. Dee believes she is more cultured than her family. She may have more knowledge about different cultures and religions that she learned in school, but she does not know as much about the family heritage as she thinks she does. For example, when Dee changes her name to "Wangero Leewanika Kemanjo" she destroys important links to her heritage that she will never understand. Her mother tries to explain to her that her name is significant because it belonged to particular beloved ones. However, Dee seems to reject the names of her ancestors, yet she is eager to seize their handmade goods. When Dee realizes she is not going obtain possession of the quilts, she storms out of the house without saying a word. It is apparent that the only reason for her visit is to get the family heirlooms, not to see the house, her mother, or Maggie. Maggie is illustrated as Dee's foil. Dee is everything that Maggie cannot be externally. Maggie is implemented into the story to provide a greater emphasis on ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
