Rhetorical Situation
Rhetoric is what can be known about a subject; it is engaged in speech or writing. Rhetoric is a
technique of using language effectively and persuasively in spoken or written form. This technique
can convince, please, or influence an audience. It achieves a particular emphasis or effect. Rhetoric
is any communication used to change the perspectives of others. Rhetorical Situation is the
circumstances in which you communicate. In the rhetorical situation, you have the subject, the
audience, the purpose/ aim, and the medium. The aim or purpose is the goal of the writer and it
depends on the effect the writer want to have a specific audience. The subject is the topic of the

Rereading is not an effective way to understand and learn the text. Reading response assignments
have taught me how to read the text carefully for main ideas, important information, and critiques. I
have learned when integrating your own ideas with the ideas of others you need to try to avoid

opinion and interpretation of the text and meaning while incorporating the ideas of the author or

Essay On Representing More People In Television
Representing More People in Television
Television is a form of media that has been around since the 1950's and has made slow but steady
progress in representing everyone since then. We have come a long way from the shows about a
white American, upper middle class, nuclear family that lives in the suburbs. Today, representation
in television is much broader, but still has shortcomings. From the 1950's to the 1990's, many shows
were about families or a group of friends, such as The Brady Bunch, Cheers, and The Fresh Prince
of Bel–Air. Progress has been made prior to the 2010's but nowhere near as much progress as the
shows that have been aired in this current decade.

For most of television history, women have been stereotyped and held secondary roles. The timeless
classic, I Love Lucy, was a program that was well ahead of its time. Lucille Ball plays the lead role
and breaks the stereotype that women aren't funny. But this is one of the few, if not, the only early
television sitcom that breaks the mold of its time. Many shows and series of the first few decades of
television feature women as the typical stay at home mom or the fragile damsel in distress that have
very simple lines. However, that sentiment is changing drastically because of shows like Orange Is
the New Black (OitNB), a show that is about a women's prison and the lives of the inmates. Many
types of women are represented; women of color, LGBT women, and even women with mental
illnesses. Each character is complex and portrayed realistically. No role is strictly designated as a
villain, hero, love interest, or the one character that has to be saved. This is completely different
from the roles that women played in the past. Oliver Lee Bateman of TeenVogue mentioned a
pattern in women's roles in sitcoms, "And nobody can overlook the slob husband/hyper–competent,
nagging wife dynamic on display in shows ranging from Home Improvement and Everybody Loves
Raymond to The King of Queens." Those shows aired in the 1990's and early 2000's, OitNB
premiered in 2013. It might be gradual but the drive to have more

Kentucky Law requires marriage licences to be issued in the county clerk's' name, and in fact all
marriage licences are obtained through the county clerk's office. If Gov. Beshear had provided a way
to take Davis' name off of the licence, perhaps there could've been resolution, and same–sex couples
could have left Davis' and stepped into a new chapter of life. We need to turn the no win into
everybody wins. As of now in Kentucky, there has been some resolution. As was requested over a
year ago, the name "Kim Davis" will not appear on any marriage licence issued in Rowan county.
Not because she has left her post, but because Gov. Beshear has ordered the removal of the county

Sitcoms Influence On American Culture
Sitcoms have long been characterized by laughter, large casts of characters, and recurring locations.
While these qualities have remained consistent over the years, sitcoms have adjusted over time to
better reflect their audience. A number of pre–2000s shows such as Friends and Cheers depict an
idealized group of friends who spend sizeable amounts of their days with each other. These
characters rarely come into conflict, and they confront any problem as a group. These shows possess
a generally positive vibe, acting as a form of escapism for anyone who might be feeling down.
However, these shows have become rarer and less popular over the course of the 2000s due to
changing American perceptions of the world, which have become more pessimistic over time.
Possible reasons for this include personal conflicts, financial struggles, or increased exposure to ...

The characters of It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia, collectively referred to as "the Gang," are a
group of almost irredeemable individuals who cannot truly be considered friends. Most episodes
depict one or more members of the group creating and carrying out a convoluted plot to acquire
something, such as money or revenge. Each character is willing to betray, manipulate, and abuse one
another in order to get ahead. They have very few positive qualities, and their many flaws include
addiction, illiteracy, sociopathy, repressed homosexuality, and extreme narcissism. In contrast, the
characters of The Office are far more good–natured. While the show often focuses on the conflict
between the characters, these disputes are much more tame and innocent compared to those in It's
Always Sunny in Philadelphia. Additionally, this strife often originates from misunderstanding or
ignorance, rather than outright malice. Despite their differences, many of the characters still end up

Sitcoms : A Sitcom And Sitcom Essay
A Comparative of Sitcoms A situation comedy, or sitcom, is defined as a comedy series involving
the same characters in various day–to–day situations which are developed as separate stories for
each episode (Dictionary.com). The structure of a sitcom has not changed much since its inception
on radio, but the characters and premises of the show change with the different times the shows are
based in. This paper will focus on the history of sitcoms as they made the transition from radio to
television, and a comparison of an early sitcom to one of modern times. Specifically, the themes that
the shows addressed, relationships in the show, diversity of the characters, and the portrayed roles of
women in the household will be compared and contrasted for I Love Lucy and Modern Family.
Situational comedies have been an important genre in story telling since the age of radio. At the
inception of radio in the mid–to–late 1920s, sitcoms were present (Edgerton 130). The simple comic
premise for each program meant a lot of time did not have to be committed to listening to the
program. Someone could listen to just one episode and then not again for weeks, but still be able to
understand what was happening. One of the first comedy series on radio was Amos & Andy which
premiered in 1926, and focused on the life of two black men and their friends (History of American
Radio). The characters of the program were urban, ethnic, working–class families in Harlem, and in
this way Amos and Andy was

INTRODUCTION
Plato once, prophetically, posed a question that hints at the very core of this project. In
philosophizing on the issue of entertainment and its various, sometimes questionable, sources he
asked his fellow citizens to consider the following
"Shall we just carelessly allow our children to hear casual tales which may be devised by casual
persons, and to receive into their minds ideas for the most part the very opposite of those which we
should wish them to have when they are grown up?"
Shall we indeed? It is an ongoing debate. Plato obviously recognized the power stories have to
shape who and what we are, and although some may be reluctant to admit to how much influence

The work of communication theorist and professor, Stuart Hall, confirms that meanings are not
inherently in people; rather they are derived from external sources, one primary source being the
mass media to which we are repeatedly exposed; in our homes, in our cars, and on the job. Hall
asserts " the media serves the myth of democratic pluralism–the pretense that society is held
together by common norms, including equal opportunity, respect for diversity, individual rights.."
(Griffin 2000). TV sitcoms may not be intended to mirror our society, but they are perceived as such
and the resulting ideology is a culture that at some level accepts what's being handed to them
without examining the messages within. This newsletter is an attempt to examine these messages on
a deeper, more critical level. OUTLINE

Seinfeld – Much Ado About Nothing
We like to label things in our culture. Those over the age of 65 are called senior citizens. Those
under the age of 18 are called children. Anyone falling in between those ages are considered adults
and there are certain expectations placed on that demographic. Adults are the backbone of society,
responsible for basically just about everything. Television reflects that responsibility, as adults are
usually portrayed as hard–working, career–oriented, and often married and raising children. With
television reinforcing these expectations, many young people have probably felt that they need to
grow into these roles and become responsible adults. A decade ago, however, NBC's sitcom Seinfeld
debuted ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
For the most part, they showed little interest in following the pack and doing what was expected of
them. For Jerry and the gang, the idea of getting married and having children was almost
preposterous. To engage in that level of responsibility would seriously hinder the sense of personal
freedom these characters enjoyed. The fact that these characters were, for the most part, happy with
their lives and situations is important. Their contentment shows viewers that there is life outside of
marriage and career, and it doesn't have to be empty. I think this is especially important for younger
viewers, such as teens and college students. Young adults are inundated with societal expectations
through their teachers and parents (as well as television and other media), and may feel they have to
achieve certain things in order to be considered successful. When we look at the number of adults
who suffer from depression due to work related stress, marriage problems, and divorce, it seems
evident that many, many adults are unhappy with their lives. It does not therefore, seem outlandish
to ponder that perhaps the reason so many people are unfulfilled is because they felt they had to live
a certain life in order to meet the expectations of others. All issues of entertainment aside, Seinfeld
was important because it offered impressionable viewers an alternative to a life that may not be
suited for them at all.

Seinfeld's Impact on American Culture
Jerry Seinfeld's television sitcom, "Seinfeld," which went off the air in 1999, is still one of the most
culturally pertinent shows today. The show dealt with little nuances of American society. A puffy
shirt, for example, could be the main subject for an entire show. This show, which was derived from
Jerry Seinfeld's observational humor, was voted as the "Greatest Show of All Time" by TV Guide in
2002. According to the show's official website, the ratings for the syndicated version of Seinfeld are
ahead of many of the current primetime comedies ("Seinfeld" 2/5).

Of his obsessive nature his mother said: "He never wanted just a piece of chocolate cake, it was the
whole cake. And he always waited until he got what he wanted" ("Jerry Seinfeld" 1/7).
Soon Seinfeld's easy–to–relate to humor gave way to regular appearances on "The Tonight Show"
and "Late Night with David Letterman." Other more gimmicky comedians failed the test of time, but
Seinfeld's steadfast style made his popularity bloom. Despite national exposure, Seinfeld still stayed
close to his roots, continuing to play at small venues as well as on television. With jokes like: "They
say Tide cleans bloodstains. I say if you've got a T–shirt with bloodstains, then maybe laundry isn't
your biggest problem" ("Jerry Seinfeld" 3/7) it's not hard to see why Seinfeld caught on.
In 1990, "Seinfeld," a sitcom based on Seinfeld's humor, debuted as a summer replacement show.
Seinfeld allowed characters on the show to embody some of the idiosyncrasies his stand–up comedy
had observed. Seinfeld played himself on the show, and the other characters on the sitcom were
based on friends and acquaintances in Seinfeld's real life. The show was set in a recognizable
Manhattan with specific storefronts and locales in the cut scenes and dialogue. The plot of an
episode of "Seinfeld" usually centered on the daily menial tasks of the characters and the little
quirks that they observed along the way. "Seinfeld," widely

In a 1988 BBC 'network' examination the former Chief Executive of Channel 4 Jeremy Isaccs said
of sitcom "It is a form in which it is impossible to bring new work. It is the most conventional form

Isaccs point still stands. Since television 's rise to dominance in the 50's and 60's television sitcom
hadn't progressed much from their radio sitcom forerunners, by the 1980's the cliche and the tropes

In writing about the translation of The Office Jim Benson notes that studios were being a bit
precatious in developing a new wave of sitcoms as comedy had seen a slump in the decade before
unable to emulate the success of Everybody Loves Raymond, Friends and Seinfeld. This slump in
interest from the US market was believed to be because the modern viewer didn 't have the same
connection the family home life and domestic situations as the generation before, therefore just like
Neale and Krutnik pointed out something new had to be added into the mix. Benson states that the
US networks tried to tap into the "obsession with Ultra–long work weeks, technology and pop–
culture." This almost satirical view of society is best explored in the office as the representation of
'real people' is both subtle and extreme blurring the lines between surreal and factual.

The Comedy of the American Dream Essays
The Comedy of the American Dream
In the early 1950s, the American dream was the nation's common heartbeat. Citizens longed for the
?ideal? family; most hid their shortcomings. The nuclear family included a mother, father, two
children and a pet, all residing in suburbia, USA. Fathers were the breadwinners, and mothers stayed
home, cooked, and cared for the kids. Each family included a boy and a girl, the former who always
parted his hair to the side and the latter who always wore pigtails. The nation was convinced that if
one worked hard enough, he or she could earn enough money to support the family and have plenty
of professional satisfaction. Everyone sat down to dinner together nightly, and discussed his/her day,

The main comedy of the picture arises from the innocence of the characters clashing with the
worldly realisms, and the color transformation of Pleasantville parallels the transition that American
humor has taken over the past half–century. Despite the harsh realities of the Depression and World
War II that led up to this age, an innocence was assumed during the 50s; today, no subject is too
controversial for television. In fact, the main facet of American humor today is the shock between
the ideology of the American dream as it supposedly existed earlier this century and the subsequent
recognition of reality.
Historians and academics offer definitions which underlie today?s humor. In 1937, Walter Blair,
whose 60–year study of humor focused on the nineteenth century development of the genre, stated
that American humor was neither produced only in America nor contained characteristics privy only
to Americans. He offered instead that American humor meant ?humor which is American in that it
has an emphatic ?native quality??a quality imparted by its subject matter and its technique? (92). H.
R. Haweis, half a century earlier in 1882, had defined the technique of American humor as the three
shocks of contrast: business and piety, Aboriginal and Yankee, and the bigness of American nature
versus the smallness of

Television And Its Impact On Society 's Life
Television comes in many forms, from a box in your living room to the screen on your smart phone.
From its creation to this very day it has impacted society's way of life and enforced ideologies that
affect various decisions. Television is what connects us to the outside world. It provides a sense of
belonging for many and, metaphorically, becomes a member of the family. The concept of
Patriarchy has been present in sitcoms and influences how we are supposed to act around others.
Despite the downfall of sitcoms recently, they still are used to help us gain an understanding. In
Modern Family's "Mother's Day" episode, these ideologies are reflected through how a normal
person would use them today. The discussion of place, home and family is illustrated yet also
broken down within the episode.
The concept of home is an influential and prevailing one to say the least. It is considered a place, as
there is an attached emotion and a sense of belonging. Adding to this, it is something that can be
constructed and shifted by an individual. As many see it, "to characterise someone as homeless is to
imply some moral lack or weakness" (Silverstone, 1994, p. 26). Home stacks together our identity,
belonging and how we are able to view the world. Alongside this, comes in television, which then is
placed in a shared area that is often referred to as the family or living room. The way a sitcom
portrays a family is how the viewing family will then use to influence their actions. For

Jerry's contribution to the fearsome four is as important as the peanut butter in a peanut butter and

sensible and laid back audience because they can relate. However, the complete opposite types
swoon over him because they envy the qualities that they would like to possess. I would have to say
that Jerry is mostly responsible for the shows immediate fame and without him Seinfeld just
wouldn't be Seinfeld. Jason Alexander, who plays George, has a unique combination of traits that
make him irresistibly hilarious. He pulls off the sympathetic and charming sort while other times
he's purely devious and radical. He plays Jerry's sidekick and together they foolishly run around

The Sitcom Of Television By William Asher 's ' Bewitched '...
Situation comedies, or sitcoms for short, first began between 1946 and 1947 in the United Kingdom
when broadcast station BBC aired Pinwright's Progress (Aaron,2014). The United States soon
followed airing their first sitcom in 1950. William Asher has been credited with being the "man who
invented the sitcom," having directed over two dozen of the leading sitcoms from the 1950s through
the 1970s (Cook, 1999). Some of Asher's finest works include "Bewitched" and "I Love Lucy",
classics that are still around today. Although situation comedies have been able to withstand time,
even with new evolving technology that allows a high focus on effects that have allowed science
fiction shows to thrive, they are far from where they began from William Asher's time.
Television has always portrayed the culture of the time and in the 1950s a very domestic picture was
painted. Family, marriage, and an obedient housewife were all a common factor in sitcoms during
this time. Contrary to popular belief, sitcoms in the 1950s rarely portrayed men as loving, doting,
patriarchs, but rather as distant providers of the family with stick and stern rules for both their
children and wife. (Anderson, 2012). Although television has changed rapidly since the 1950s I
argue that the representation of men in sitcoms have evolved very little over time. Using both
sitcoms from the 1950's and today I plan to prove that an emphasis on masculinity and male
dominance have remained a common underlying theme since

Theme Of Borders By Thomas King Borders
The mother in "Borders" by Thomas King reveals her pride and courage for her identity as she
crosses the border to visit her daughter Laetitia in Salt Lake City. Challenges like self–identity are
faced every step of the way, but it a person with pride and bravery who accepts it gladly. This is best
demonstrated by King and his use of conflict, repetition and literary devices. In the short story, there
is a conflict between the mother and the guards at the border. As the mother and son approach the
American border the mother refuses to give her citizenship as either Canadian or American. Once
she reaches the border, she has a conversation with the guard: "Purpose of your visit?" "Visit my
daughter." "Citizenship?" "Blackfoot," my mother told him. "Ma'am?" "Blackfoot," my mother

Mills, Brett. The Sitcom. Edinburgh: Edinburgh UP, 2009. Print.
Mill's piece provides an indepth look at the "Sitcom" and it's place in genre and vice versa. The
piece includes a brief history of the sitcom, the ways in which they are distinguished, and the
hybridity of sitcoms as a genre. Mill shows us that because sitcoms have been assumed to be so
clearly defined, little to no research has been done on them, when in fact there is very little agreed
upon amongst researchers, producers, and viewers alike. Mills concludes that what makes a sitcom
is that it has "foregrounds of comedic intent." Mills piece is thorough, but the back and forth of
using genre and sitcom to analyze one another creates confusion. At times, it makes the piece seem

This piece analyzes the sitcom in comparison to stand–up comedy. In the chapter "What's So Funny
About America?" sitcoms are broken down into elements that contrast those of stand–up. Marc
describes the two forms of comedy as very different. He states that sitcoms depend on "familiarity,
identification, and redemption of popular beliefs" while stand–up normally relies on "the shocking
violation of normative taboos."
Instead of defining sitcom as what it is, this piece draws heavily on what it is compared to stand–up
comedy. I agree with this piece that the two are very different, therefore I believe the best way to
analyze the two isn't in comparing or contrasting them. This piece relies too much on stand–up
comedy and treats sitcom as the inferior of the two.
The piece first notes that comedy forces people to forget that what they are seeing is fake, but in that
exchange experience pure emotion free from guilt. This quote, and the information about sitcoms
reinforcing a status quo help to form a realization of why they work and have continued to be a main
part of television throughout it's

"The Simpson's" is about the satiric adventures of a working class family in the city of Springfield.
"The Simpsons" is an example of an American sitcom. A sitcom is situation comedy, which is when
the same setting and same characters appear in every episode. Sitcoms surfaced in the 1950's in
America showing the "ideal" family. Slowly sitcoms started to show the reality of life and dealt with
social issues such as divorce and unemployment. Sitcoms have become very popular because people
could relate to the program, since they show problems that happen in every day life. In this essay, I
am going to analyze "The Simpsons" and demonstrate how it follows the conventions of the sitcom
genre.

This is makes the audience skeptical and appears unrealistic. She goes against her stereotype
because she is going against the norms of an eight–year–old girl. Later on in this episode, Bart gets a
tattoo. This goes against the norms of a young boy, because you rarely see someone getting a tattoo
that young. It adds comedic value as well. The tattoo parlor is being satirized because they are
shown as irresponsible for allowing a child to get a tattoo. Homer is shown as an unsupportive father
because he falls asleep when his children are performing on stage. He should be cheering and
watching, but he goes against his stereotype, which also adds comedic value. Marge is the only one
in this episode who does not go against her stereotype. She acts like a mother by getting angry with
Bart and watches the school production and cheers on her children.
The family as a unit is stereotyped. The father brings in the money while the mother stays at home.
The kids go to school. On the other hand, they have problems that are not "ideal" for a family. They
have a son who's failing in school, and they have financial issues. However, at the end of each
episode they are shown as happy even after the hardships. Even though they're not perfect they still
love each other. In the episode "Homer Bad Man", the family sticks together when Homer is
accused of sexual assault. The family supports him and tries to help him prove his innocence. The

Fighting Charges of Assimilation in Hansberry's A Raisin in the Sun and The Cosby Show
The critical reception of The Cosby Show, an enormously popular television sitcom in the 1980's,
roughly paralleled that of A Raisin in the Sun, Lorraine Hansberry's highly acclaimed play of the
1950's. Both the television series and the play helped change the way Blacks are portrayed in the
entertainment media. But despite being initially greeted with critical praise, both subsequently fell
under heavy scrutiny by many critics for being too assimilationist. However, in both cases, the
charges of assimilation may perhaps be too harsh. A Raisin in the Sun, a drama of a middle–class

He longs for the socioeconomic advantages of the affluent people and assimilates to their ideas. As
Darwin Turner explains, Walter "typifies the upward–moving American male. He honors ruthless

kind of attitude or ideal. Nor is it accurate to assume that the play is against such assimilationist
goals. Instead, A Raisin in the Sun remains decidedly and deliberately ambiguous in any sort of
moral judgment.
The 1950's was a decade in which black literature emphasized the issue of integration. Black writers
also consciously stressed the similarities between Blacks and Whites. Hansberry believed that blacks
and Whites had similar character traits and values, as A Raisin in the Sun demonstrates. However,
Hansberry "assumed a consciously ambivalent stance in regard to social integration" (Turner, 4).
The Youngers did not want to move into a white community merely out of a desire to live with
whites. They moved out of a desire for freedom and opportunity rather than for social integration.
But this motivation should not be construed as a desire to assimilate. Instead, it is a desire to achieve
an ideal shared by all Americans. In this regard, A Raisin in the Sun is not a mere proponent of black
assimilation––the play deals realistically

The Influence Of Family Sitcoms In The 1970's
The family sitcom has always been a form of entertainment that has brought people together, and
has played a pivotal role in American society. Family values often change over time to reflect the
issues being faced by each family member generationally. Media and entertainment are often
affected by the social and political issues of their time. Many of these issues, and the way that these
issues have shaped American values, have often influenced the content of television sitcoms.
Although family sitcoms often reflect the values of real American families, in the 1970s, many
television families had very few flaws, as opposed to the real families of the 1970s. Meanwhile,
television families more accurately represented real families in the 1980s. ... Show more content on

Before the seventies, family values were more conservative and traditional with the popularization
of the nuclear family in the fifties and sixties. The nuclear family was "...built around the nucleus of
the mother and father..." (Stanley, 2012). This changed in the 1970s due to the economic and social
struggle inflicted by the Cold War and Vietnam (Stanley, 2012). Family size began to go down
because people could not afford big families anymore. This trend continued into the eighties when,
"...the average family size dropped from 3.58 people in 1970 to 3.29 people in 1980..." (Suro, 1991).
Because of financial struggle, family size was less of a priority for the average family. Another
change in the 1980s was that marriage was not valued as much as it was in previous years. When a
group of high school seniors were surveyed, there was "...a modest (4%–5%) decline in the late
1980s in the fraction of female seniors saying that they thought it very likely that they would stay
married for a lifetime to the same person..." (Thornton & Young–Demarco, 2001). Because of the
lack of optimism in the 1970s, young women were not as enthusiastic about marriage as previous
generations. Because of social, political, and economic struggles and advancements, family values
changed between these two

Middle Class In Victorian Society
Representing the middle class in media predates modern entertainment to Victorian times, when
music–halls and novels entertained audiences with exaggerations of life. These early reflections
influenced the way television comedies do today. According to Banville (2011), "All of these
cultural forms have one thing in common, the goal of representing the livid experiences of ourselves
and others to both ourselves and others" (p. 17). Although the medium changed from music–hall to
sitcom, being middle class is a shared experience that transcends decades due to the diverse
audience that identifies with the material. Victorians stereotyped lower–class men who attempted to
gain wealth or appear wealthy as feminine, therefore unworthy of wealth or royalty (Banville, 2011,
p. 18). They used stereotypes of lower–class citizens to protect their way of life, and perpetuate
wealth disparity in England. Stereotypes sustained Victorian music–halls and novels to distinguish
the wealthy from the poor, and they used these stereotypes to stifle a class of people's quality of life.
The same stereotypes are the basis for many jokes in present day comedies such as Everybody
Loves Raymond (Banville, 2011, p. 24).
Scharr (2001) argues that, "Humorous exchanges are often expressions of power between the joke–
teller and the target of the joke," is a well–supported notion (p. 25). According to Berger (1987) "We
derive pleasures from the feelings of superiority endangered when we observe these

The Family Situation Comedy ( Sitcom )
For many years now when we picture the quixotic American family our thoughts often go to the
suburbs. We visualize a family with a father, a mother and the average 2.5 children. Perhaps, this
stereotypical family has roots in the 1950 's. After World War II, there was a substantial move from
urban and rural areas to the freshly sprouted suburbs. The GI bill, signed into law in 1944, provided
significant funding for this movement with low–interest mortgage loans. (Moon, n.d.) Into the
twenty–first century, the suburbs and metropolitan areas continued their growth. (Frey, 2012) During
the period the suburbs were in their genesis, a relatively new medium, the television, was placing its
roots as a staple in the suburban living room. This device replaced the radio as a family 's focal point
for news and entertainment. In the mid–fifties, a new form of entertainment emerged, the family
situation comedy (sitcom). The show, "Father Knows Best" was credited as the first successful form
of the new style of comedy in 1954, and would have an extended run in broadcast and syndication
for the next thirteen years plus spawn many imitators such as "Leave it to Beaver". (Taflinger, 1996)
Because of their high viewership and capacity to produce income for networks, producers, and
broadcast stations, the domestic sitcom continues to saturate the small screen today. (Academy of
Television Arts & Sciences Foundation, 2013) Feasibly, the capacity of the suburban family sitcom

The Abc Sitcom 2 Broke Girls
The CBS sitcom 2 Broke Girls has had continuous success ever since it first aired in 2011. What
makes 2 Broke Girls different than many other TV sitcoms is that almost every member of the main
cast has a different rationality, making the show one of the most diverse sitcoms to ever exist. The
two broke girls are named Caroline and Max. Caroline has blonde hair, blue eyes, and a slim figure.
She grew up in a wealthy home, never had to work, and attended college. Caroline lived an upper–
class lifestyle until her father was convicted of financial wrongdoings and lost everything. In
contrast, Max has brown hair, brown eyes, and a larger figure and has worked since she was very
young. The two girls are waitresses in a run–down diner. In addition, the diner is owned by a very
short Asian man named Han and the cashier is an elderly black man named Earl. The sitcom follows
their lives as they learn how to deal with each other and their lower–class lifestyles. Similar to many
sitcoms, 2 Broke Girls takes advantage of the diverse ethnic and racial stereotypes of the characters
to make comedic entertainment. While the comedy in the show does grab the attention of the
audience, what also stands out is the connection of the characters. All of the commonalities that
come with living in similar situations overpower their differences in race and ethnicity. Even though
the characters' stereotypes and interactions are constantly being mocked for comedic material, they
all have a special bond

(2016). Laughing at Risk: Sitcom Laugh Tracks Communicate Norms for Behavior. Media
Psychology, 19(3), 359–380. The function that sitcom laugh tracks play in the correspondence of
social standards was researched. Members (n = 112) were presented to a sitcom in which
thoughtless driving practices were shown. One group of the members saw a portion of the sitcom
with the laugh track on, and the other group saw the same portion with the laugh track cut out.
Results demonstrate that laugh tracks do suggest data about what sorts of driving conduct is normal.
In particular, the availability of unsafe driving injunctive standards was affected by the laugh track
and situation control. This impact was directed by relating with the character who showed foolish
conduct. Openness of hazardous driving standards at that point anticipated dispositions,
unmistakable standards, and behavioral goals with respect to unsafe driving. The ramifications of
the outcomes is that media accounts can communicate standards about conduct through the laugh
track in a sitcom. This article would beneficial to my research because it exemplifies how the laugh
track is used. The laugh track is shown to indicate when the light heartedness of the situation would

Codes and Conventions of Genres
A genre is a particular type of commodity . It has characteristic features that are known to and
recognised by the audiences because the same formula is reproduced many times.
Genre is a French word meaning that refers to types or categories of media products. Soap operas,
situation comedies, police series, quiz shows and news programmes are just some of the genres to be
found in television. Genres are identified by the particular conventions they use which are
recognised through regular contact. Conventions are any elements which are repeated in such a way

Black or female newsreaders, for example, have been appearing more frequently in recent years
therefore representing equality in society. However if generic conventions are simply repeated over
and over the films made could be dull and too predictable. The filmmaker relies upon conventions
but also mixes them with his or her own version and ideas in order to produce a successfully
constructed form of genre.
Nearly all stories in any genre are about situations which are disrupted by a problem for e.g., a
peaceful village is wrecked by robbers and one of the children is taken hostage, the villages find try
to find ways of getting the child back the 'good guy' is used to help the narrative along and therefore
resolves the problem. The purpose of the story provides tension for the audience, as on the other
hand the audience wish the problem to be solved but on the other hand the audience want the story
to continue in order to maintain the pleasure. Narratives have to operate strategies for both moving
towards a solution and yet simultaneously putting it off by complaints.
Genres are popular because they deal with universal dilemmas and appeal to universal needs. For
example, the dilemmas could be the hero or heroine fighting to clear his or her name; good finally
overcoming evil. Genres are entertaining in their own ways

Rosanne truly is what many consider modern family... the prequel. Much like its preceding sitcom;
All in the Family, the show openly dealt with some "socially unheard of" themes. These included:
domestic violence, infidelity, gay rights. The biggest one challenged accepted ideas of the woman's
role in the family. A female character led the household and her appeal was not based on her

Of course the "black sheep" to the modern family sitcom was Married... With Children. Instead of

and Andre's parents Pops and Ruby living in a predominantly white suburban neighborhood in Los

don't seem to realize their culture. With this being the basis of the show, it has caused an uproar,
with just its name alone being said to perpetrate racial stereotypes, leaving some with feelings that
the show should be canceled (Peyser). The sitcom has even received tweets from Presidential

1989 and 1998. The show explored daily life and numerous misadventures of Jerry Seinfeld, a New
York comedian, and his friends in 172 episodes, shared between nine seasons. The audience was
largely adults who could relate to the oh–so quirky situations Seinfeld himself would discuss in his
comedy bits, especially New Yorkers. In Season four, there were episodes that focused on messages
of gay issues and homophobia, however, Seinfeld and co–creator Larry David worried of truly
offending the gay community, they incorporated the catchphrase "Not that there's anything wrong
with that," throughout the episode of Seinfeld denying a relationship with his friend, ... Show more

The letters had been uncovered after a cabin–fire from a lit cigar left by Kramer as he and a woman
went down to the lake to skinny–dip. Mr. Ross was devastated that everything was lost in a fire
permits the audience to believe he was upset not only about the fire, but about the past life and
secrets the cabin hid from his family. Not only does Susan study the secret of her father's past, but
the audience learns how individuals would cover up their homosexuality in order to fit into society's
"norm" between 1989 and

Essay on Personal Statement
We are the media and the media is us. That statement is very broad and is so for a good reason.
Through out the world and the history of our society, media has transformed, melted, bent, molded
and made our society and culture what it is today. But at the same time, our culture and society has
done the exact same thing to media. It is hard to realize or imagine a time without televisions,
telephones, fax machines, printers, computers, cell phones, pagers and other electronic technologies
that have made our lives, hopefully, stress–free. Those items were and are still being invented today
to make our lives easier and better, but are they really making life easier and better? Media plays a
big part in defining what society wants and gets. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Of course, this is an exaggeration and other countries should know better than to think that
Americans live like the Simpsons characters, but that is what media does to people that do not know
the society being depicted.
In addition to creating negative images of the United States, our media tarnishes the character of
specific Americans as well. Lets take old Bill Clinton for a test drive here. When he was suspected
of having an affair with a White House intern, our media zeroed in on him to find out if he did or did
not have an affair with Monica Lewinsky. We had analysts examine whether he should or should not
tell us he did, what would happen if he did, what would happen to the relationship between him and
his wife. Our media told us how to think about situation and, what should happen to him if he
answered their questions a certain way. Our media never let us think what we wanted to think.
Instead they gave the false impression that we did have total control of what way we thought, but in
each station they took a viewpoint and bombarded us with it. The effect was similar to brainwashing
us. Some stations did explore alternative perspectives, but most stations had only one view. Then
when our media asked for the peoples opinion, amazingly the publics opinions were the same as our
media's opinions. In away, our media imbeds the seed of what to think, and hope the public follows.
Well, I have demonstrated a couple ways that the media, specifically television, has

  • 3. Essay On Representing More People In Television Representing More People in Television Television is a form of media that has been around since the 1950's and has made slow but steady progress in representing everyone since then. We have come a long way from the shows about a white American, upper middle class, nuclear family that lives in the suburbs. Today, representation in television is much broader, but still has shortcomings. From the 1950's to the 1990's, many shows were about families or a group of friends, such as The Brady Bunch, Cheers, and The Fresh Prince of Bel–Air. Progress has been made prior to the 2010's but nowhere near as much progress as the shows that have been aired in this current decade. One show that stomps on racial stereotypes is Master Of None, a show about ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... For most of television history, women have been stereotyped and held secondary roles. The timeless classic, I Love Lucy, was a program that was well ahead of its time. Lucille Ball plays the lead role and breaks the stereotype that women aren't funny. But this is one of the few, if not, the only early television sitcom that breaks the mold of its time. Many shows and series of the first few decades of television feature women as the typical stay at home mom or the fragile damsel in distress that have very simple lines. However, that sentiment is changing drastically because of shows like Orange Is the New Black (OitNB), a show that is about a women's prison and the lives of the inmates. Many types of women are represented; women of color, LGBT women, and even women with mental illnesses. Each character is complex and portrayed realistically. No role is strictly designated as a villain, hero, love interest, or the one character that has to be saved. This is completely different from the roles that women played in the past. Oliver Lee Bateman of TeenVogue mentioned a pattern in women's roles in sitcoms, "And nobody can overlook the slob husband/hyper–competent, nagging wife dynamic on display in shows ranging from Home Improvement and Everybody Loves Raymond to The King of Queens." Those shows aired in the 1990's and early 2000's, OitNB premiered in 2013. It might be gradual but the drive to have more ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 5. Koharih Maru Research Paper "This is the Kobayashi Maru... Please help!" Any true Star Trek fan knows the story of the Kobayashi Maru. It was the test only one Starfleet cadet had ever beaten. In your simulated Starship, you come across a badly damaged third class Neutronic Fuel Carrier, named the Kobayashi Maru, floating through a Klingon neutral zone. Intergalactic treaty states that Starfleet fighters, such as the one you are the Captain of, cannot enter the neutral zone. However the life support systems are down on the Kobayashi Maru and they require you to rescue the passengers and crew. You are presented with two options: Enter the neutral zone and start intergalactic war, or leave the Kobayashi Maru to die. If you chose the latter, you will have the death of 381 persons on your conscious, their screams pleas for help echoing in your head, and if you chose the ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Kentucky Law requires marriage licences to be issued in the county clerk's' name, and in fact all marriage licences are obtained through the county clerk's office. If Gov. Beshear had provided a way to take Davis' name off of the licence, perhaps there could've been resolution, and same–sex couples could have left Davis' and stepped into a new chapter of life. We need to turn the no win into everybody wins. As of now in Kentucky, there has been some resolution. As was requested over a year ago, the name "Kim Davis" will not appear on any marriage licence issued in Rowan county. Not because she has left her post, but because Gov. Beshear has ordered the removal of the county and name of the clerk on all marriage licenses. Instead of "Rowan County," the top of marriage licences now only say "Commonwealth of Kentucky," and Davis need not sign the documents anymore, as one of her deputies can sign them as a Notary ... • 7. Sitcoms Influence On American Culture Sitcoms have long been characterized by laughter, large casts of characters, and recurring locations. While these qualities have remained consistent over the years, sitcoms have adjusted over time to better reflect their audience. A number of pre–2000s shows such as Friends and Cheers depict an idealized group of friends who spend sizeable amounts of their days with each other. These characters rarely come into conflict, and they confront any problem as a group. These shows possess a generally positive vibe, acting as a form of escapism for anyone who might be feeling down. However, these shows have become rarer and less popular over the course of the 2000s due to changing American perceptions of the world, which have become more pessimistic over time. Each character is willing to betray, manipulate, and abuse one another in order to get ahead. They have very few positive qualities, and their many flaws include addiction, illiteracy, sociopathy, repressed homosexuality, and extreme narcissism. In contrast, the characters of The Office are far more good–natured. While the show often focuses on the conflict between the characters, these disputes are much more tame and innocent compared to those in It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia. • 9. Sitcoms : A Sitcom And Sitcom Essay A Comparative of Sitcoms A situation comedy, or sitcom, is defined as a comedy series involving the same characters in various day–to–day situations which are developed as separate stories for each episode (Dictionary.com). The structure of a sitcom has not changed much since its inception on radio, but the characters and premises of the show change with the different times the shows are based in. This paper will focus on the history of sitcoms as they made the transition from radio to television, and a comparison of an early sitcom to one of modern times. Specifically, the themes that the shows addressed, relationships in the show, diversity of the characters, and the portrayed roles of women in the household will be compared and contrasted for I Love Lucy and Modern Family. Situational comedies have been an important genre in story telling since the age of radio. At the inception of radio in the mid–to–late 1920s, sitcoms were present (Edgerton 130). The simple comic premise for each program meant a lot of time did not have to be committed to listening to the program. Someone could listen to just one episode and then not again for weeks, but still be able to understand what was happening. One of the first comedy series on radio was Amos & Andy which premiered in 1926, and focused on the life of two black men and their friends (History of American Radio). The characters of the program were urban, ethnic, working–class families in Harlem, and in this way Amos and Andy was ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

In philosophizing on the issue of entertainment and its various, sometimes questionable, sources he asked his fellow citizens to consider the following "Shall we just carelessly allow our children to hear casual tales which may be devised by casual persons, and to receive into their minds ideas for the most part the very opposite of those which we should wish them to have when they are grown up?" Shall we indeed? It is an ongoing debate. Plato obviously recognized the power stories have to shape who and what we are, and although some may be reluctant to admit to how much influence TV ... • 14. Television and Media Seinfeld – Much Ado About Nothing We like to label things in our culture. Those over the age of 65 are called senior citizens. Those under the age of 18 are called children. Anyone falling in between those ages are considered adults and there are certain expectations placed on that demographic. Adults are the backbone of society, responsible for basically just about everything. Television reflects that responsibility, as adults are usually portrayed as hard–working, career–oriented, and often married and raising children. With television reinforcing these expectations, many young people have probably felt that they need to grow into these roles and become responsible adults. For the most part, they showed little interest in following the pack and doing what was expected of them. For Jerry and the gang, the idea of getting married and having children was almost preposterous. To engage in that level of responsibility would seriously hinder the sense of personal freedom these characters enjoyed. The fact that these characters were, for the most part, happy with their lives and situations is important. Their contentment shows viewers that there is life outside of marriage and career, and it doesn't have to be empty. I think this is especially important for younger viewers, such as teens and college students. Young adults are inundated with societal expectations through their teachers and parents (as well as television and other media), and may feel they have to achieve certain things in order to be considered successful. When we look at the number of adults who suffer from depression due to work related stress, marriage problems, and divorce, it seems evident that many, many adults are unhappy with their lives. It does not therefore, seem outlandish to ponder that perhaps the reason so many people are unfulfilled is because they felt they had to live a certain life in order to meet the expectations of others. All issues of entertainment aside, Seinfeld was important because it offered impressionable viewers an alternative to a life that may not be suited for them at all. The characters of ... Seinfeld's Impact on American Culture Essay Seinfeld's Impact on American Culture Jerry Seinfeld's television sitcom, "Seinfeld," which went off the air in 1999, is still one of the most culturally pertinent shows today. The show dealt with little nuances of American society. A puffy shirt, for example, could be the main subject for an entire show. This show, which was derived from Jerry Seinfeld's observational humor, was voted as the "Greatest Show of All Time" by TV Guide in 2002. According to the show's official website, the ratings for the syndicated version of Seinfeld are ahead of many of the current primetime comedies ("Seinfeld" 2/5). Other more gimmicky comedians failed the test of time, but Seinfeld's steadfast style made his popularity bloom. Despite national exposure, Seinfeld still stayed close to his roots, continuing to play at small venues as well as on television. With jokes like: "They say Tide cleans bloodstains. I say if you've got a T–shirt with bloodstains, then maybe laundry isn't your biggest problem" ("Jerry Seinfeld" 3/7) it's not hard to see why Seinfeld caught on. In 1990, "Seinfeld," a sitcom based on Seinfeld's humor, debuted as a summer replacement show. Seinfeld allowed characters on the show to embody some of the idiosyncrasies his stand–up comedy had observed. Seinfeld played himself on the show, and the other characters on the sitcom were based on friends and acquaintances in Seinfeld's real life. The show was set in a recognizable Manhattan with specific storefronts and locales in the cut scenes and dialogue. Since television 's rise to dominance in the 50's and 60's television sitcom hadn't progressed much from their radio sitcom forerunners, by the 1980's the cliche and the tropes were so ingrained in British culture that it could have been viewed as a tired old medium. Citizens longed for the ?ideal? family; most hid their shortcomings. The nuclear family included a mother, father, two children and a pet, all residing in suburbia, USA. Fathers were the breadwinners, and mothers stayed home, cooked, and cared for the kids. Each family included a boy and a girl, the former who always parted his hair to the side and the latter who always wore pigtails. The main comedy of the picture arises from the innocence of the characters clashing with the worldly realisms, and the color transformation of Pleasantville parallels the transition that American humor has taken over the past half–century. Despite the harsh realities of the Depression and World War II that led up to this age, an innocence was assumed during the 50s; today, no subject is too controversial for television. In fact, the main facet of American humor today is the shock between the ideology of the American dream as it supposedly existed earlier this century and the subsequent recognition of reality. Historians and academics offer definitions which underlie today?s humor. In 1937, Walter Blair, whose 60–year study of humor focused on the nineteenth century development of the genre, stated that American humor was neither produced only in America nor contained characteristics privy only to Americans. He offered instead that American humor meant ?humor which is American in that it has an emphatic ?native quality??a quality imparted by its subject matter and its technique? (92). H. R. • 22. Television And Its Impact On Society 's Life Television comes in many forms, from a box in your living room to the screen on your smart phone. From its creation to this very day it has impacted society's way of life and enforced ideologies that affect various decisions. Television is what connects us to the outside world. It provides a sense of belonging for many and, metaphorically, becomes a member of the family. The concept of Patriarchy has been present in sitcoms and influences how we are supposed to act around others. Despite the downfall of sitcoms recently, they still are used to help us gain an understanding. In Modern Family's "Mother's Day" episode, these ideologies are reflected through how a normal person would use them today. The discussion of place, home and family is illustrated yet also broken down within the episode. The concept of home is an influential and prevailing one to say the least. It is considered a place, as there is an attached emotion and a sense of belonging. Adding to this, it is something that can be constructed and shifted by an individual. As many see it, "to characterise someone as homeless is to imply some moral lack or weakness" (Silverstone, 1994, p. 26). Home stacks together our identity, belonging and how we are able to view the world. Alongside this, comes in television, which then is placed in a shared area that is often referred to as the family or living room. The way a sitcom portrays a family is how the viewing family will then use to influence their actions. For ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 28. The Sitcom Of Television By William Asher 's ' Bewitched '... Situation comedies, or sitcoms for short, first began between 1946 and 1947 in the United Kingdom when broadcast station BBC aired Pinwright's Progress (Aaron,2014). The United States soon followed airing their first sitcom in 1950. William Asher has been credited with being the "man who invented the sitcom," having directed over two dozen of the leading sitcoms from the 1950s through the 1970s (Cook, 1999). Some of Asher's finest works include "Bewitched" and "I Love Lucy", classics that are still around today. Although situation comedies have been able to withstand time, even with new evolving technology that allows a high focus on effects that have allowed science fiction shows to thrive, they are far from where they began from William Asher's time. Television has always portrayed the culture of the time and in the 1950s a very domestic picture was painted. Family, marriage, and an obedient housewife were all a common factor in sitcoms during this time. Contrary to popular belief, sitcoms in the 1950s rarely portrayed men as loving, doting, patriarchs, but rather as distant providers of the family with stick and stern rules for both their children and wife. (Anderson, 2012). Although television has changed rapidly since the 1950s I argue that the representation of men in sitcoms have evolved very little over time. Instead, A Raisin in the Sun remains decidedly and deliberately ambiguous in any sort of moral judgment. The 1950's was a decade in which black literature emphasized the issue of integration. Black writers also consciously stressed the similarities between Blacks and Whites. Hansberry believed that blacks and Whites had similar character traits and values, as A Raisin in the Sun demonstrates. However, Hansberry "assumed a consciously ambivalent stance in regard to social integration" (Turner, 4). The Youngers did not want to move into a white community merely out of a desire to live with whites. They moved out of a desire for freedom and opportunity rather than for social integration. But this motivation should not be construed as a desire to assimilate. Instead, it is a desire to achieve an ideal shared by all Americans. In this regard, A Raisin in the Sun is not a mere proponent of black assimilation––the play deals realistically ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 49. The Influence Of Family Sitcoms In The 1970's The family sitcom has always been a form of entertainment that has brought people together, and has played a pivotal role in American society. Family values often change over time to reflect the issues being faced by each family member generationally. Media and entertainment are often affected by the social and political issues of their time. Many of these issues, and the way that these issues have shaped American values, have often influenced the content of television sitcoms. Although family sitcoms often reflect the values of real American families, in the 1970s, many television families had very few flaws, as opposed to the real families of the 1970s. Meanwhile, television families more accurately represented real families in the 1980s. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Before the seventies, family values were more conservative and traditional with the popularization of the nuclear family in the fifties and sixties. The nuclear family was "...built around the nucleus of the mother and father..." (Stanley, 2012). This changed in the 1970s due to the economic and social struggle inflicted by the Cold War and Vietnam (Stanley, 2012). Family size began to go down because people could not afford big families anymore. This trend continued into the eighties when, "...the average family size dropped from 3.58 people in 1970 to 3.29 people in 1980..." (Suro, 1991). Because of financial struggle, family size was less of a priority for the average family. Another change in the 1980s was that marriage was not valued as much as it was in previous years. When a group of high school seniors were surveyed, there was "...a modest (4%–5%) decline in the late 1980s in the fraction of female seniors saying that they thought it very likely that they would stay married for a lifetime to the same person..." • 51. Middle Class In Victorian Society Representing the middle class in media predates modern entertainment to Victorian times, when music–halls and novels entertained audiences with exaggerations of life. These early reflections influenced the way television comedies do today. According to Banville (2011), "All of these cultural forms have one thing in common, the goal of representing the livid experiences of ourselves and others to both ourselves and others" (p. 17). Although the medium changed from music–hall to sitcom, being middle class is a shared experience that transcends decades due to the diverse audience that identifies with the material. Victorians stereotyped lower–class men who attempted to gain wealth or appear wealthy as feminine, therefore unworthy of wealth or royalty (Banville, 2011, p. 18). They used stereotypes of lower–class citizens to protect their way of life, and perpetuate wealth disparity in England. Stereotypes sustained Victorian music–halls and novels to distinguish the wealthy from the poor, and they used these stereotypes to stifle a class of people's quality of life. The same stereotypes are the basis for many jokes in present day comedies such as Everybody Loves Raymond (Banville, 2011, p. 24). Scharr (2001) argues that, "Humorous exchanges are often expressions of power between the joke– teller and the target of the joke," is a well–supported notion (p. 25). • 53. The Family Situation Comedy ( Sitcom ) For many years now when we picture the quixotic American family our thoughts often go to the suburbs. We visualize a family with a father, a mother and the average 2.5 children. Perhaps, this stereotypical family has roots in the 1950 's. After World War II, there was a substantial move from urban and rural areas to the freshly sprouted suburbs. The GI bill, signed into law in 1944, provided significant funding for this movement with low–interest mortgage loans. (Moon, n.d.) Into the twenty–first century, the suburbs and metropolitan areas continued their growth. (Frey, 2012) During the period the suburbs were in their genesis, a relatively new medium, the television, was placing its roots as a staple in the suburban living room. This device replaced the radio as a family 's focal point for news and entertainment. In the mid–fifties, a new form of entertainment emerged, the family situation comedy (sitcom). The show, "Father Knows Best" was credited as the first successful form of the new style of comedy in 1954, and would have an extended run in broadcast and syndication for the next thirteen years plus spawn many imitators such as "Leave it to Beaver". (Taflinger, 1996) Because of their high viewership and capacity to produce income for networks, producers, and broadcast stations, the domestic sitcom continues to saturate the small screen today. What makes 2 Broke Girls different than many other TV sitcoms is that almost every member of the main cast has a different rationality, making the show one of the most diverse sitcoms to ever exist. The two broke girls are named Caroline and Max. Caroline has blonde hair, blue eyes, and a slim figure. She grew up in a wealthy home, never had to work, and attended college. Caroline lived an upper– class lifestyle until her father was convicted of financial wrongdoings and lost everything. In contrast, Max has brown hair, brown eyes, and a larger figure and has worked since she was very young. The two girls are waitresses in a run–down diner. In addition, the diner is owned by a very short Asian man named Han and the cashier is an elderly black man named Earl. The sitcom follows their lives as they learn how to deal with each other and their lower–class lifestyles. Similar to many sitcoms, 2 Broke Girls takes advantage of the diverse ethnic and racial stereotypes of the characters to make comedic entertainment. While the comedy in the show does grab the attention of the audience, what also stands out is the connection of the characters. All of the commonalities that come with living in similar situations overpower their differences in race and ethnicity. The function that sitcom laugh tracks play in the correspondence of social standards was researched. Members (n = 112) were presented to a sitcom in which thoughtless driving practices were shown. One group of the members saw a portion of the sitcom with the laugh track on, and the other group saw the same portion with the laugh track cut out. Results demonstrate that laugh tracks do suggest data about what sorts of driving conduct is normal. In particular, the availability of unsafe driving injunctive standards was affected by the laugh track and situation control. This impact was directed by relating with the character who showed foolish conduct. Openness of hazardous driving standards at that point anticipated dispositions, unmistakable standards, and behavioral goals with respect to unsafe driving. The ramifications of the outcomes is that media accounts can communicate standards about conduct through the laugh track in a sitcom. When he was suspected of having an affair with a White House intern, our media zeroed in on him to find out if he did or did not have an affair with Monica Lewinsky. We had analysts examine whether he should or should not tell us he did, what would happen if he did, what would happen to the relationship between him and his wife. Our media told us how to think about situation and, what should happen to him if he answered their questions a certain way. Our media never let us think what we wanted to think. Instead they gave the false impression that we did have total control of what way we thought, but in each station they took a viewpoint and bombarded us with it. The effect was similar to brainwashing us. Some stations did explore alternative perspectives, but most stations had only one view. Then when our media asked for the peoples opinion, amazingly the publics opinions were the same as our media's opinions. In away, our media imbeds the seed of what to think, and hope the public follows. Well, I have demonstrated a couple ways that the media, specifically television, has ...
