Northern Coalfields Limited (NCL) is a coal mining company headquartered in Singrauli, Madhya Pradesh, India. It was formed in 1985 as a subsidiary of Coal India Limited. NCL mines the Singrauli coalfields, which have a total area of 2,202 square kilometers containing high quality coal reserves. NCL is the third largest coal producer in the world and has over 16,000 employees. While NCL has many strengths like low costs and large reserves, it also faces challenges like outdated mining technology and illegal mining. However, NCL has shown improving financial performance in recent years with increased profits and earnings per share.

Mining history in this region is very old. The first
systematic mining, however, was started by NCDC in
Jhingurda during early sixties.
The master plan of the coalfield (Moher Basin) was
prepared by P&D Division of NCDC in consultation
with Soviet Experts.This envisaged construction of
large mechanised opencast mines.
The coalfield can be divided into two basins, viz.
Moher sub-basin (312 Sq.Km.) and Singrauli Main
basin (1890 Sq.Km.).

part of the coalfield and is largely unexplored.
Northern Coalfields Limited was formed in
November 1985 as a subsidiary company of Coal
India Limited. Its headquarter is located at
Singrauli, Distt. Singrauli (M.P.). Singrauli is
connected by road with Varanasi (220 Km).
With the formation of Northern Coalfields Limited
(NCL), Singrauli coalfield came under jurisdiction
of NCL with its Headquarter at Singrauli.
