The Maddaddam Trilogy
Many games appear in the MaddAddam trilogy (Three–Dimensional Waco, Kwiktime Osama,
Barbarian Stomp, Extinctathon, Blood and Roses, and Painball to name a few), and they have
varying levels of significance to the plot. Some games were significant for Crake and Glenn's
budding friendship, as fodder for them to bond and spend time together. Extinctathon became the
means of organizing the MaddAddam group, the group through which Glenn teams up with Adam
One and eventually coerces the scientists to help develop the Crakers. Chess is another game which
reoccurs in the series, and instrumentally facilitates the apocalyptic events of the trilogy. In
MaddAddam, Pilar smuggles out six pills–two red, two white, two black–in a white bishop. During

The Froley: The Lack Of Big Boom
There are several reasons, though they all boil down to one simple statement – the soundtrack cues
the audience as to their emotional reaction.First off, consider the foley and sound effects. We all
know what breaking glass sounds like, how tires sound when a car careens around a tight corner,
and so forth. This is also the reason for the huge, rumbling explosions in space – as unrealistic as it
is to hear an explosion in space, we're so accustomed to hearing them in real life that the lack of Big
Boom would violate our necessary suspension of disbelief.
Additionally, a recognizable sound (such as a gunshot, a bestial growl, or a child's scream) that
doesn't relate to what's on–screen at the moment ratchets up the suspense by several notches.

Cs Lewis Research Paper
C.S. Lewis
C.S. Lewis was a famous Christian and children's literature author. Even 50 years after his death, his
Chronicles of Narnia books are still a favorite of young children and his Christian books are still
read by Christians today.
Clive Staples Lewis was born on November 29, 1898, in Belfast, Ireland into a Christian family. His
parents were Albert James Lewis and Flora Augusta Hamilton Lewis. He had a brother named
Warren Hamilton Lewis. When he was younger, he had a dog named Jacksie, who was hit by a car.
He "changed" his name to Jacksie which he later shortened to Jack. A name he would go by the rest
of his life. As a child, Lewis and his brother loved Beatrix Potter's books and often made their own
stories and own worlds. One of those worlds was called ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Lewis created a group called the 'Inklings'. They were a group of men that would meet and talked
about their works. They would meet at a place called The Eagle and The Child or at Magdalen
College. There he was joined by J.R.R Tolkien, Warren Lewis, Owen Barfield, Christopher Tolkien,
Roger Lancelyn, Adam Fox, Hugo Dyson, J.A.W. Bennett, Lord David, and Nevill Coghill. The
group ended when C.S. Lewis died. Several of his books were based on his belief in his Christin
faith. Some of his most famous books about Christianity are Mere Christianity, Miracles and The
Problem of Pain. He, also, came up with ideas for stories from Mythology. Till We Have Faces, was
written about Cupid and Psyche. While he was writing his first book in The Chronicles of Narnia
series, he was greatly criticized by his friend, Tolkien. Tolkien was very critical of the book, he gave
him grief about the mixed mythology. Lewis stopped writing the book and threw out his first copy.
But, Lewis kept dreaming about a lion and later started the book completely over, because of this, it
took ten years to finish the first book. Tolkien started to approve of the books when Aslan came into

Theban Trilogy, Oedipus At Colonus By Sophocles
Thousands of years after its origin, the dramatic tragedy remains one of the arts most popular forms,
combining the potent elements of love, hate, revenge, ambitions, and the human condition.
Sophocles, took place to be one of the greatest tragedy writers of his time. Sophocles has written
many plays over the course of his lifetime; his plays are one out of three tragedy writers whose plays
survived. The Theban Trilogy, one of many plays Sophocles had written, composed of 3 different
plays, Oedipus the King, Oedipus at Colonus, and Antigone. Oedipus the King, a tragedy that shows
the role of fate, chance and pride inside of a family and community. Oedipus at Colonus, dramatizes
the end of a tragic hero's life, Oedipus, and his importance to Athens. Antigone, the last play in the
trilogy, shows the empowerment of Antigone after she decides to choose her own path in life. The
chorus, the voice of a greater society, plays three major roles in the trilogy; mediating, directing and
dramatizing. Throughout the trilogy we are introduced to the chorus, and their importance in the
plays.
Mediating, one of the most important roles the chorus plays in the trilogy. The chorus mediates in
the sense of space and understanding, such as comments and making known certain ideas and
themes that developed in the dramatic world. The chorus had made comments on the fall of
Oedipus, about his greatness, weakness and fate and frailty of man, the commentary also sets and
creates the mood and aura

The Dark Knight
2012 was a great year for nerds like myself. The Avengers, The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey,
and The Dark Knight Rises all came out during this year. Each movie piqued the anticipation of fans
everywhere. For me, the last of these three seemed the most intriguing. Christopher Nolan, fresh off
the brilliant Inception was concluding his epic The Dark Knight Trilogy. The Dark Knight became
one of the best sequels ever, so I expected The Dark Knight Rises to live up to Batman Begins, at
least. Unfortunately, lightning did not strike twice because The Dark Knight Rises, while still a good
movie, is the worst in the trilogy.
This film takes place eight years after the awe–inspiring events of The Dark Knight. The lies told at
the end of the previous film have served their purpose. Gotham has become a cleaner, more crime–
free city than ever before. But not all is well. Bruce Wayne (Christiaan Bale reprising his role) has
become a recluse. Jim Gordon (played again by Gary Oldman) feels overwhelmed by guilt. To top it
all off, Gotham faces a new terrorist threat from an unknown entity known as Bane (Tom Hardy). To
combat Bane, Batman must return from his self–imposed exile to save Gotham once more.
All the returning actors give worthy performances in their respective roles, which they have made
their own. Christian Bale simply inhabits Batman at this point, and he adds more depth to Bruce
Wayne in this third movie. Morgan Freeman provides a characteristically on point performance as

The back–story for the notorious FBI's Trilogy Information Technology Modernization Program was
chosen as a case–study material because it is the most heavily cited and its magnitude is so large.
The case study aims to perform a critical analysis of what went wrong, and make recommendations
that might help future project managers avoid ending up with a similar position. Base on the
analysis the reference, the general consensus in the research is that this enterprise project fell into
the most basic traps of software development, from poor planning to bad communications
throughout the lifecycle of the project. Our team will focus on the following aspects including
scope, human resource, procurement, unrealistic scheduling, contracting and contract management,
program management and enterprise architecture, the report will analyze each topic and make
corresponding recommendation to improve the practice. The primary lessons learned from the

Soundtrack Of Star Wars
Star Wars is one of those franchises that spans generations, and is beloved around the world. The
sights and sounds of Star Wars has prevailed throughout the decades, whether as nostalgia, or to
complain about the prequel trilogy. Star Wars has become ingrained in the part of society reserved
for pop culture references, memes, and wasted money on official (and not so official) merchandise.
Overall, every aspect, but particularly the sounds, of the Star Wars franchise is made to connect back
to the original trilogy. Despite being spread across decades and multiple facets of the franchise, the
familiar, continuing sounds of Star Wars is a way of retaining continuity, and nostalgia, as well as
identifying characters and themes. The scene chosen ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The sounds match the area and environments, as discussed in above paragraphs it is the robots and
technology that were created within the realm of the film's universe and genre that set the
environment. Aurally the sense of space is not similar to what is being visually portrayed in some
parts, particularly when characters are talking; there is no reverberation off of metal or plastic when
Obi Wan Kenobi is talking to Padmé in the spacious hospital room full of plastics and metal, he
sounds more like he is in a closed environment, and close to the microphone. Despite this the
soundscape is still used to effectively shape the environment seen on screen into a "hallucination" of
a fully real world, one is able to almost sense and touch within one's mind. Most evidently at the
very end scene when Darth Vader is overcome by anguish at the revelation that he killed Padmé. In
that part he loses his control over the Force and starts to destroy the robots and equipment still
present in the room after his surgery. One can hear the familiar sounds of bottles and glass being
smashed, and crinkles of cans

Star Wars: The Force Awakens
For years I was ridiculed and shunned for admittedly never watching the Star Wars saga; therefore,
when I finally decided to binge–watch all six movies in preparation for the new release of Episode
VII, Star Wars: The Force Awakens, my expectations were extremely high. Unfortunately, my
expectations were tragically unfulfilled. The story idea was fascinating, but poorly created. In
comparison, my expectation for Episode VII was also high, but unlike the first six, it did not
disappoint. While critics may accuse the plot of Episode VII of being too similar to that of Episode
IV, Star Wars, no detail was overlooked when putting this movie together. Episode VII outdoes the
first six Star Wars films in nearly every category: acting, dialogue, writing, ... Show more content on

The original six movies, especially Episodes IV, V, and VI, were made in a time with far less
technology than what filmmakers can use today. Naturally, the film itself is not as clear as the
movies of today's standard. Some of the props, like Yoda, as well as the laser beams during fight
scenes look extremely fake. The original movies were impressive for their time, but have no
comparison to the quality of the newest movie (Star Wars 1977, 1980, 1983). Not only is the film
itself crystal clear, the props are more detailed: BB8 even has a layer of dust covering his orange and
white casing. Also, the computer generated images (CGI) are well–done and seamless, an important
quality for a movie taking place in space (Star Wars: The Force Awakens

The Star Wars Film On The Vietnam War
"A long time ago, in a galaxy far, far away..." This was the beginning of the first film of one of the
most successful movie franchises of all time. Not only did the films eventually lead to a gross of
over $27 billion between the box office, DVDs, toys, video games, etc, but it also influenced
America and the rest of the world. (Forbes) The Star Wars films show similarities to various aspects
of history and American society. It has been proven that George Lucas wrote the movies based on
The Vietnam War, with aspects of other American events. It is evident that these aspects have had a
major influence on the concept of "War in America" after the release and success of the Star Wars
movies. This will be investigated by analyzing the movies, critical reviews, and other texts relating
to the subject. Star Wars was originally released in 1977 and became one of the largest grossing
films of all time. George Lucas developed two additional sequels and a prequel that developed the
extremely successful franchise. The first film Star Wars Episode IV: A New Hope placed the viewers
into the middle of a civil war between The Republic and The Empire. The story follows a young
Jedi Knight (Luke Skywalker) and his journey to defeat (with a lot of help) The Empire. As the story
progresses through the the next movie, more characters are introduced and Luke becomes closer and

Star Wars Influence On American Culture
From the opening text that crawl with a line "A long time ago in a galaxy far, far away..." along with
John William's timeless score, American culture has always been massively impacted by the Star
Wars universe and all of its wonders. Starting its first movie 1977, Star Wars created a phenomenon
across the US due to its originality in storytelling and amazing works in special effects. Beyond its
popularity, Star War was even selected by the Library of Congress to be preserved as a national
treasure for being aesthetically, culturally and historically significant. This shows that the spectrum
of influence of the franchise does not stop at just filmmaking, but also stretches further to
American's pop culture, history, religion and politics. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
He had the whole space fantasy world painted in his mind, but it seemed to be just a fantasy after all
since the technology available was still limited to produce such visual effects. Lucas quickly
realized that in order for his universe to come to life, he was going to have to build it by hand
(theneweconomy, 1). It may have sounded a little ridiculous at first, but for anyone who worked
with Lucas knew that there were no impossibilities when it came to build one of the biggest
franchises in the world. John Dykstra, a visual effect designer, was chosen to work as the head
director in special effects by Lucas for the original trilogy described how he and his group were
spending months to build models and robots from scratch to achieve the realism that Lucas wanted
(theneweconomy, 1). He stated that, "Back in the days of Star Wars, we kind of walked into an
empty warehouse and sat on the floor and went 'How are we going to do this?" Lucas and Dykstra
were paying close attention to the details and motions of every creature and miniature in the film,
especially how to make them look as life–like as possible through the use of animation and motion
control photography that, surprisingly, still looks fresh today. Star Wars was the first movie to use

Archetypal Conflicts In Star Wars
George Lucas, an American filmmaker, is one of the most valued writers of all time for his
American epic, "Star Wars". He lived a good life, born in 1944 and getting into writing movies at a
young age. After many award winning films, he wanted something that would be extraordinary, so
he created Star Wars. Lucas spent long hours on the movie, working out every detail. He employs
many archetypes throughout the movies to teach themes and lessons to its viewers. One of the most
important that he implemented were archetypal conflicts. These show character development and
hardships that we have to deal with in real life. In the original Star Wars trilogy, George Lucas
employs the use of archetypal conflict of seeming vs being, head vs heart, and ... Show more content

First, in "A New Hope", Obi–Wan's fight with Vader expresses the good vs evil conflict. When Obi–
Wan states, "You can't win, Darth. If you strike me down, I shall become more powerful than you
can possibly imagine" (67), he shows that good will win the fight no matter what happens. In their
fight, the two are balanced with each other. Towards the end, Vader uses the overwhelming force of
his talents and youth to take down Obi–Wan. Even though Obi–Wan is no longer alive, he became
more powerful, showing that good will always prevail against evil. Lucas expresses how good is
always more knowledgeable then evil and uses it to exploit evil's weaknesses to defeat them. Even if
it seems like evil has won a small victory, good always wins more from it. Next, in "The Empire
Strikes Back", Luke fights a good vs evil conflict within himself in the Dagobah cave. Luke realizes
the evil inside of him when his head pops out of Darth Vader's mask, stated when the narrator says,
"The black helmet and mask fall away to reveal Luke's head. Across the space, Luke gasps..." (51).
Luke realizes the anger and aggression inside of him and what it could make him. Luke has to chose
if he will prevail with good or become an evil servant to the Dark Side. He knows after his head

C.S. Lewis and the Influence of Dante in Out of the Silent Planet All throughout Lewis novels there
is evidence that clearly connects the themes and symbolism from other aspects of traditional
Christian literature both during and before he began writing. One of the most distinct examples of
this occurring within Lewis' works is the influence that Dante had on the concepts that he reflects on
while conveying thoughts to his readers. This is specifically more notable a connection between
Dante and Lewis when you examine the parallels that take place within Lewis' Out of the Silent
Planet and Dante's Inferno. The literary tradition left behind by Dante is both one able to influence
the thoughts of others and to teach the value of Christianity through within a fictional environment.
This is similar to Lewis' Space Trilogy in more ways than one, some of which include Ransom
journey in place of the pilgrim as he travels through strange, new, territory in order to reach his goal,
and the use of Malacandra to represent the levels of Hell. Each book in the Space Trilogy continues
to expand on the possible influence that Dante may have had on Lewis while he wrote these books
and aims to show Christians the truth behind the Dante's thoughts through the use of science fiction.
Many elements found within Dante's Inferno are reintroduced through new ideas by Lewis within
Out of the Silent Planet in order to convey Christian thoughts and

American Epic Space Opera Franchise: Star Wars

the successful sequels The Empire Strikes Back (1980) and Return of the Jedi (1983); these three

Christian Theism In A New Hope And A New Hope
What would you think is the most loved and cherished movies of all time? If you asked most people
Star Wars would be very high on that list of most beloved movies of all time, and I would personally
agree. Despite what you think of these movies there is obviously a message behind each of these
movies that teach the audience a lesson beyond the watching of the movies. The original trilogy of
Star Wars models an almost perfect example of Christian theism. Obviously, we should start looking
at the first movie of the trilogy, "A New Hope", to find the similarities between Star Wars and
Christian theism. Luke Skywalker is introduces to the audience as the protagonist that wants to
accomplish memorable deeds in his young life. He wants to do good things for everyone, and that is
the first parallel is, the tangible good and evil. There are two sides of the "Force" in the Star Wars
universe, a light side and a dark side, or in other words good and evil. On the light side you are
supposed to be selfless, loyal, and responsible. The dark side on the other hand is all about
selfishness, destruction of relationships, and getting others to do what you want for you. In the
theistic worldview good is what God deems it to be, loving your neighbor, giving to the poor, and
following the set rules of God. Evil is whatever goes against God, including hating other, envy, and
getting what you want at the expense of others. Someone needs to save people from the destruction

The Machete Order, gives the best Star Wars experience as the saga starts with Episode IV,
establishing the Star Wars universe and ending with the most rewarding ending in Episode VI. This
order makes the epic saga a story of two characters, Luke and Anakin. Two movies of Luke's tale,
two movies of Anakin's story and final single film that brings both stories into one and giving a

Out of the Silent Planet by C.S. Lewis Essay
Out of the Silent Planet by C.S. Lewis
In the year 1625, Francis Bacon, a famous essayist and poet wrote about the influences of fear on
everyday life. He stated, "Men fear death as children fear to go in the dark; and as that natural fear
in children is increased with tales, so is the other" (Essays Dedication of Death). Clearly, external
surroundings affect perceptions of fear as well as human nature in general. Although C.S. Lewis
published the novel, Out of the Silent Planet, over three centuries after Bacon wrote his theory on
fear, Lewis similarly portrayed external surrounding to manipulate perceptions of fear. From the first
chapter of the novel, Lewis revealed fear to be a weakness that leads to ignorance. It was this ...

fear of Malacandra, he eventually comes to the realization that differences between Earth and
Malacandra does not represent evil within the Malacandrian world. In fact, he corrects many of his
misperceptions, including that of the sorns, which he originally described as "Ogres." After meeting

differences between Earth and Malacandra represented the evils of human society. "War, slavery,
prostitution," events and institutions only present in "The Silent Planet," outraged Oyarsa and all of
the hnau (that appeared incapable of sin). This realization ultimately marked Ransom's deep
understand of fear and the ignorance of mankind. Although memory played a profound role in
Ransom's perception of fear, throughout Out of the Silent Planet, morality also played a decisive
role in Ransom's perception of fear. While in almost every case, Ransom's morality allowed him to

The often seen depictions of damsels in distress are part of an issue that is seen even in modern
literature and media. More often than not in society, men are the ones expected to rescue the women,
despite the fact that women can be just as heroic in not only literature, but in real life. This often
discourages girls from being too independent or bold, lest they be socially shunned for being
"boyish." In her article, "The Katniss Conundrum: Is She Okay for Kids?" Mary Pols confirms that
Everdeen is an exemplary role model for young people. She argues, "There is so much to admire
about Katniss Everdeen. She's strong, smart and willing to protect her family (mother and little sister
Prim) at any cost, even her own life" (Pols). Throughout the books Katniss maintains a headstrong
mindset that defines her character, letting her overcome various obstacles. Time reporter Eliana
Dockterman emphasizes that people need to realize that the violent, albeit powerful Hunger Games
series can educate the young viewers rather than harm them. She makes several good points that the
main character, Katniss is a great role model to kids of both genders. Dockterman also points out
that women can indeed be strong and caring at the same time such as Katniss. "She doesn't need to

Unfortunately, the same cannot be said of her mother" (42). Leia's mother Padme went from a queen

stereotype of women. She relied and revolved around men. Padme is "a character whose only
purpose is to give our protagonist, Anakin Skywalker, a love story" (43).
Women and young girls now have an all around strong independent symbol to look up to. There are

she is no "damsel in distress". Rey's purpose does not specifically rely around men, she can stand

Perelandra, written by C.S Lewis, published by Simon and Schuster, and originally published in

about Dr. Ransom, the main character, trying to defeat temptation, which are the evil forces. His
mission is to save mankind from the Black Archon. I think one of the author's purpose of the book
was to keep his trilogy series going and to start a new journey of the characters from the first book
in the series. Furthermore, I think he chose different planets to keep the story more interesting, and
entertaining.in the first book they were in Mars and then Ransom travels to Venus. The main theme
of the book is warfare or good versus bad, because throughout the book ransom is constantly having
to fight with dark forces to save his people, for example when Ransom saved The Green Lady from

Differences Between Star Wars And Star Wars
In this article I'll be talking about the difference in the famous films: Star Wars and Star Trek have a
lot of movies and series.
Introduction:
These two films: Star Wars and Star Trek are films which have to do from the first to the last to
understand. These two films are classified as the two most fanatical movies starting with children
and ending with the elderly. These two series of films I put them to the title: Fantasias Wars
Star Wars information:
Star Wars is an American epic space opera franchise, centered on a film series created by George
Lucas. It depicts the adventures of various characters "a long time ago in a galaxy far, far away".
The first film in the series, Star Wars (later subtitled Episode IV: A New Hope), was ... Show more

By contrast, in Star Trek we are told the story of a future in which the inhabitants of the Earth take
to the exploration of the universe in search of new planets and new life forms. The original series in
the XXIII century, but this time varies according to the number we're looking at.
Gains movies
While Star Wars has raised its six films about $ 5,670 million, Star Trek with its dozen films he has
reached $ 1,760. And yet here we do not have the latest animated film, which also must be much–.
The film pocketed more money from the Star Wars saga was the original 1977–about $ 1,610
million– while Star Trek are barely reached $ 235 million with its Star Trek IV 1986
Conclusion:
I choose Star Wars vs. Star Trek because I like science fiction and fantasy movies. I liked Star Wars
more because it has more special effects and the characters demonstrate more action; however the
part of the movie as the main character. Star Trek didn't Convince me. I think it was boring.

Movie Review : Star Wars
When George Lucas first pitched the idea of Star Wars, a space–western, to movie executives back
in the 1970's; I'm sure he never imagined it to be the cultural phenomenon that it turned out to be.
The original Star Wars trilogy (Star Wars Episode IV: A New Hope, Star Wars Episode V: The
Empire Strikes Back, Star Wars Episode VI: Return of the Jedi), earned more two billion dollars,
after adjusted for inflation in North America (1). Then sixteen years later the next three Star Wars
movies were released (Star Wars Episode I: The Phantom Menace, Star Wars Episode II: Attack of
the Clones, Star Wars Episode III: Revenge of the Sith), and earned more then 1.5 billion dollars at
the box office in North America after adjusted for inflation (1). Not only were the movies box office
hits, the movies were also critically acclaimed. Episode VI was nominated for 11 Oscars including
Best Picture and won seven including a special achievement award (9). The prequels were also
nominated for a total of five Academy Awards (9). With all of that aside Star Wars is more then all
of that, the franchise has influenced movies and how audiences get involved with movies. Star Wars
was not the original Blockuster, Episode IV came out two years late to get that title, that title goes to
Jaws. Jaws, much like Star Wars, caused the shift from the film industries typical, personal
filmmaking, to a much faster paced, big budget movies, aimed towards younger audiences (10).

Star Wars John Williams Essay
Musicology Written Task
Star Wars was first released in May 1977. It is a series of movies based on an epic space adventure
and was created by George Lucas. The franchise depicts a galaxy described as "far, far away" in the
distant past, and portrays two important characterization like the Jedi as a representation of good, in
conflict with the Sith, their evil counterpart. The overall box office produced over 4.38 billion
dollars, making Star Wars one of the fifth highest grossing films of all time. Many believe the film
would not have reached its highest without the prominently themed music created by John Williams.
The renowned themes 'the force' and 'imperial march' are one of Williams most widely known music
scores and motion pictures of all history. John Williams was able to vividly depict the characters
conflict between good and evil through the use of musical elements like timbre, pitch and duration
to create the individual characters.
The composer utilised timbre to express the evil tyranny of the storm troopers arrival in the 'Darth
Vader's theme'. The composer uses instrumentation like strings, timpani, horns and great emphasis
on the brass instruments all near the bottom of their range. The trumpets and trombones are at mid–
to low register. The low range portrayed the menacing feel to the opening ... Show more content on

The piece starts in the key of A minor with no sharps or flats. By using a minor key, the composer is
deliberately illustrating the dark tonality of the sith, because just about every chord we hear is minor
in this piece. The range of the melody is a fairly narrow range, detailing in between a low B to an A,
being a little over an octave. Though this is a fairly small range, this was completely the composer's
intent varying his instruments dominantly a low pitch, as the deep strong melody provides the
listeners to feel the strength of the evil army's

Out of the silent planet
Out of the silent planet by C.S Lewis is a novel that denotes the difference between the social
system on planet earth and the planet Malacandra. In Malacandra, groups live in harmony with one
another and complement each other. On earth, the social system is brutal and evil. The novel is a
science fiction that covers Dr. Ransoms (major character) adventures and encounters on a planet that
is entirely different from earth. Ransoms lands into this planet by accident after being kidnapped by
two evil men (Devine and Weston) and transported to the planet Malacandra (Mars) by spacecraft.

This is different to what happens on earth where groups are in constant dominance wars, often
breaking into factions that regard each other as inherently inferior. The kidnappers, Devine and
Weston represent this dominance character of Earthly beings.
On earth, people are self–centered and do not care for each other. In contrast, On Malacandra,
various species live and work together (Gibbons 88). There three intelligent species in Malacandra
and their differences of knowledge is their strength. The pfifltriggi excavate and makes things out of
their excavation, the Seroni are the master of knowledge and the hrossa were poets (Lewis, 68).
Even with these different talents, there is no group that wants to dominate the other. They know that
they have differences but have accepted them since "they can talk to each other, they can cooperate,
and they have the same ethics" (Lewis 156).
The leadership system on earth is also different from the other planets. Unlike the earth, all the other
planets have a structured leadership; they have a ruler (Oyarsa). The earth is unruly because people
have no common Oyarsa and this makes people bent. Everyone on earth wants to be a little Oyarsa
himself (Lewis 102). The Oyarsa of Malacandra, in reference to the actions of Devine and Weston of
kidnapping, is surprised how 'any creature could be so

The Pros And Cons Of Dystopian Novels
Though set in the future, dystopian novels are concerned with the present, indeed. At their heart,
they represent the writers' attempt to use literature as a vehicle to survey contemporary social and
political affairs that, if left unattended, could generate unwanted penalties for people. Dystopian and
utopian literature are not to be assumed as diametrical opposites. On the contrary, and as Booker
argues, the two are part of the same project, being dystopia the mirror which reflects the darkness of
utopian ideals (Booker, 1994: p. 15). Therefore, dystopian fictions, ironically enough, challenge
readers to ask how "the future human hells they depict have been created in the name of a quest for
stability, perfection, and a man–made utopia" (Sambell, ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

human agency (Lyon, 1994: p 10). Can it be securely assumed that citizens are the mercy of the
gaze, as Foucault seems to assume and suggest, or are they capable of create forms of resistance and
thus subvert the panopticon? Suzanne Collin's The Hunger Games trilogy is a pressing example in
which the panoptic structure dominates the primary aspects of the novels. To the effect of
demonstrating how limited are the limits of its panoptic aspects and therefore how its panopticism
functions as a metaphor for disciplinary power, two theories will be placed in conversation: Michel
Foucault's work on surveillance, namely his Discipline and Punish: The Birth of the Prison (1995),
which draw on aspects of the power of the gaze as an instrument to promote and maintain social
order; and Michel de Certeau's The Practice of Everyday Life (1984), whose investigation of the
apparently irrelevant maneuvers that people daily resort to navigate power structures acknowledges
them as active

War of 1776. It completes a trilogy of films that year which celebrate the vitality of the underdog

worth seeing just for the ceremonial raising of the first American flag at the film's climax; Claudette
Colbert's reaction: "it's a pretty flag, isn't it?" 1940 saw the release of two more films by John Ford:

Visually striking, but drowning in symbolism, the film proves that Ford was at his best when

this period were 3 Godfathers (1948) and Wagon Master (1950). The first was a remake of an early
silent film Ford had made – Marked Men (1919) – and returns to his old notion of bad men doing
good things. In Wagon Master (1950), we see a society built in miniature. For the group of

Star Wars And Star Trek: A Comparative Analysis
Most die–hard fans of each sci–fi culture phenomenon would agree that their precious saga is
nothing like its counterpart. I however, share a deviating perspective and would argue that these two
fantasy realms are, in fact, homogeneous. In a myriad of ways, Star Wars and Star Trek go hand–in–
hand when one visualizes "space travel and adventure". Besides the clear affinity for the stars and
galaxies, the two sci–fi sensations also share similar goals and virtues, such as exploring the vast
universe in which they reside in. Among these similarities, one of the more clear–cut ones is the
ever–increasing fan base both fictional works have generated. One of the biggest claims to the sagas'

Maurice Sendak's Where the Wild Things Are, In the Night Kitchen, and Outside Over There
The three titles of Maurice Sendak's famous picture book trilogy, Where the Wild Things Are, In the
Night Kitchen, and Outside Over There, name what Judith Butler calls "zones of uninhabitability,"
places of abjection that form the borders of the self as both its constitutive outside and its intimate
interior. These are dangerous places in the geography of childhood, places where the child's very life
and sense of self is threatened. More frightening still, they are present places, places that exist in the
same time that the child inhabits, rather than the once upon a mythical time of fairy tales and
legends. Hence they are places that beckon the ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
However, I would not go so far as other critics have done in claiming that this developmental
narrative is the journey of a single everychild. That is abject logic indeed, since it frames itself as a
monolithic story of what constitutes a clean and proper childhood, absent particularities. No,
Sendak's characters are individuals who experience their bodies, their drives, and their desires as
their own; their boundaries and borderlands are distinctly personal landscapes wherein they act their
own particular corporeal dramas. Nor is the lesson regarding the abject monolithic across the trilogy.
Sendak's vision in the first two books involves more than a once–for–all setting of the boundaries
between self and other; the children learn the possibilities and limits of embracing alterity within
themselves, or at least of mapping the space of and for otherness as part of their own psychic
landscape. But in the third and final book, the book that signaled the end of Sendak's career as a
children's book writer and illustrator and the beginning of his work in theater, Ida's encounter with
abjection is more profound, less jubilant, and more in keeping with the general logic of abjection
under which the adult subject is constituted.
In the first book, Where the Wild Things Are, Max wants to be a "wild thing," that is, he wants to
live his body in a raw, socially unacceptable way. His mother is at first complicit

The Lord Of The Rings
Tzvetan Todorov, the author of The Fantastic: A Structural Approach to a Literary Genre, defined
fantasy as "the creation of a moment of hesitation between two worlds"(qtd. Kelly, Course
Introduction 2). This description of the genre compliments J.R.R Tolkien's The Lord Of The Rings
trilogy due to the author's use of sub–creation to construct his alternate world. Tolkien believed that
the way to create a believable, all–encompassing world was to combine fragments of reality, or the
"primary world", together to construct a new, seemingly credible "secondary world". Sub–creation,
if successful, forms an alternate but parallel world to reality, "which your mind can enter. Inside it,
what he relates is 'true': it accords with the laws of the ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Here, Tolkien signifies that humans were moulded in the likeness of God, the ultimate creator;
therefore we are able to, and should, create. This quotation highlights how his Catholic belief deeply
influenced his personal philosophy, which in turn affected his writing of The Lord Of The Rings.
Numerous parallels can be drawn between Christianity and the trilogy, such as that between God
and The Creator Eru, who was the source of all life on Arda. Furthermore, like God, all that was
created by Eru was once good, even Sauron, and it is outside forces such as power, corruption and
greed that twist what is good and make it bad. Tolkien's creationist philosophy is evident and his
embedded Christian messages were his attempt to reinforce his religious beliefs on a world that he
felt had become too secular.
It is widely known that Tolkien detested the allegorical assumptions made about his work. The
author insisted that allegory was restrictive to readers and he preferred 'history, whether real or
feigned'(Tolkien I, 12). As Ursula Le Guin states "fantasy is nothing but the writer's view of the
world" highlighting that fact that Tolkien's life experiences heavily influenced his work (qtd Kelly,
27). Tolkien's work reflects and comments on 20th Century Western society and in doing so,
enlightens his readers of a past time. In fact, this is demonstrated outright by

Few great filmmakers can write and oversee the production of a film that will be relevant and built
upon for the next 4 decades. Even fewer filmmakers can be regarded as the person who changed
cinema forever. George Lucas did all of this in 1977 with the release of the film he created,
originally called, "The Star Wars." He had this idea after his first feature length film "American
Graffiti" in 1973. This film became popular and he later pitched his idea for a space opera to the
production company. They agreed and Star Wars was born. In the beginning, it was meant to be one
film, which would entail all of the story for the three films in the original trilogy, A New Hope,

Character Analysis: These Broken Stars
Well, well, well, colour me surprised. This trilogy just chucked a Days of Blood & Starlight and
went straight in for the raw, gore and desperation of war. Love story, this was not. We're in deeper,
darker terrain now. And I loved it.
The thing, for those who've yet to read These Broken Stars, that you must know with the first book
in this trilogy is that it was a love story; tragic, desperate and bounded by socioeconomic barriers, it
was the tale of two most unalike souls being brought together. For those sensitive to the presence of
love in YA, the romance was a little hefty, especially considering the fact that the world building
was a tad lacking (which is always disappointing in a sic–fi). But for most, the romance was perfect.
Lila LaRoux and Tarver encompassed your classic play on the hate to love trope. You can't go wrong
with that one and we all fell deep into its grasps. And so, for many, it would naturally be assumed
that This Shattered World would welcome yet another ship for us all to pour our hearts and souls
into. And since we're all picky as heck nowadays, we want the "hate to love" to be repeated, only not
because we also ironically crave creativity. And you know what? ... Show more content on

Paul Auster's The New York Trilogy. Alford points out: Spaces are also the apparent scene of
signification, but only through a misapprehension of the missing human elements in mapped
representations of space. Ultimately we will discover that the space of signification is what we have

Quinn cannot leave his home to detach himself because he is already detached. Everything that
defined Quinn is gone. The things he loved were what kept him grounded to reality, but "It had been
more than five years now. He did not think about his son very much anymore, and only recently he

to love so he is ungrounded. Quinn taking down the photograph of his wife exemplifies his

attempting to find his utopian purgatory, his space. He expects that one day he will somehow just

must receive a direction from a higher power. The death of Blue in Ghosts, is also relevant. Similar
to Quinn, Blue experiences his death in a long process, but only after he begins his assignment given

The Maddaddam Trilogy

  • 1. The Maddaddam Trilogy Many games appear in the MaddAddam trilogy (Three–Dimensional Waco, Kwiktime Osama, Barbarian Stomp, Extinctathon, Blood and Roses, and Painball to name a few), and they have varying levels of significance to the plot. Some games were significant for Crake and Glenn's budding friendship, as fodder for them to bond and spend time together. Extinctathon became the means of organizing the MaddAddam group, the group through which Glenn teams up with Adam One and eventually coerces the scientists to help develop the Crakers. Chess is another game which reoccurs in the series, and instrumentally facilitates the apocalyptic events of the trilogy. In MaddAddam, Pilar smuggles out six pills–two red, two white, two black–in a white bishop. During a ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 3. The Froley: The Lack Of Big Boom There are several reasons, though they all boil down to one simple statement – the soundtrack cues the audience as to their emotional reaction.First off, consider the foley and sound effects. We all know what breaking glass sounds like, how tires sound when a car careens around a tight corner, and so forth. This is also the reason for the huge, rumbling explosions in space – as unrealistic as it is to hear an explosion in space, we're so accustomed to hearing them in real life that the lack of Big Boom would violate our necessary suspension of disbelief. Additionally, a recognizable sound (such as a gunshot, a bestial growl, or a child's scream) that doesn't relate to what's on–screen at the moment ratchets up the suspense by several notches. ... • 5. Cs Lewis Research Paper C.S. Lewis C.S. Lewis was a famous Christian and children's literature author. Even 50 years after his death, his Chronicles of Narnia books are still a favorite of young children and his Christian books are still read by Christians today. Clive Staples Lewis was born on November 29, 1898, in Belfast, Ireland into a Christian family. His parents were Albert James Lewis and Flora Augusta Hamilton Lewis. He had a brother named Warren Hamilton Lewis. When he was younger, he had a dog named Jacksie, who was hit by a car. He "changed" his name to Jacksie which he later shortened to Jack. A name he would go by the rest of his life. As a child, Lewis and his brother loved Beatrix Potter's books and often made their own stories and own worlds. One of those worlds was called ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Lewis created a group called the 'Inklings'. They were a group of men that would meet and talked about their works. They would meet at a place called The Eagle and The Child or at Magdalen College. There he was joined by J.R.R Tolkien, Warren Lewis, Owen Barfield, Christopher Tolkien, Roger Lancelyn, Adam Fox, Hugo Dyson, J.A.W. Bennett, Lord David, and Nevill Coghill. The group ended when C.S. Lewis died. Several of his books were based on his belief in his Christin faith. Some of his most famous books about Christianity are Mere Christianity, Miracles and The Problem of Pain. He, also, came up with ideas for stories from Mythology. Till We Have Faces, was written about Cupid and Psyche. While he was writing his first book in The Chronicles of Narnia series, he was greatly criticized by his friend, Tolkien. Tolkien was very critical of the book, he gave him grief about the mixed mythology. Lewis stopped writing the book and threw out his first copy. But, Lewis kept dreaming about a lion and later started the book completely over, because of this, it took ten years to finish the first book. • 7. Theban Trilogy, Oedipus At Colonus By Sophocles Thousands of years after its origin, the dramatic tragedy remains one of the arts most popular forms, combining the potent elements of love, hate, revenge, ambitions, and the human condition. Sophocles, took place to be one of the greatest tragedy writers of his time. Sophocles has written many plays over the course of his lifetime; his plays are one out of three tragedy writers whose plays survived. The Theban Trilogy, one of many plays Sophocles had written, composed of 3 different plays, Oedipus the King, Oedipus at Colonus, and Antigone. Oedipus the King, a tragedy that shows the role of fate, chance and pride inside of a family and community. Oedipus at Colonus, dramatizes the end of a tragic hero's life, Oedipus, and his importance to Athens. Antigone, the last play in the trilogy, shows the empowerment of Antigone after she decides to choose her own path in life. The chorus, the voice of a greater society, plays three major roles in the trilogy; mediating, directing and dramatizing. Throughout the trilogy we are introduced to the chorus, and their importance in the plays. Mediating, one of the most important roles the chorus plays in the trilogy. The chorus mediates in the sense of space and understanding, such as comments and making known certain ideas and themes that developed in the dramatic world. The chorus had made comments on the fall of Oedipus, about his greatness, weakness and fate and frailty of man, the commentary also sets and creates the mood and aura ... • 9. The Dark Knight 2012 was a great year for nerds like myself. The Avengers, The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey, and The Dark Knight Rises all came out during this year. Each movie piqued the anticipation of fans everywhere. For me, the last of these three seemed the most intriguing. Christopher Nolan, fresh off the brilliant Inception was concluding his epic The Dark Knight Trilogy. The Dark Knight became one of the best sequels ever, so I expected The Dark Knight Rises to live up to Batman Begins, at least. Unfortunately, lightning did not strike twice because The Dark Knight Rises, while still a good movie, is the worst in the trilogy. This film takes place eight years after the awe–inspiring events of The Dark Knight. The lies told at the end of the previous film have served their purpose. Gotham has become a cleaner, more crime– free city than ever before. But not all is well. Bruce Wayne (Christiaan Bale reprising his role) has become a recluse. Jim Gordon (played again by Gary Oldman) feels overwhelmed by guilt. To top it all off, Gotham faces a new terrorist threat from an unknown entity known as Bane (Tom Hardy). To combat Bane, Batman must return from his self–imposed exile to save Gotham once more. All the returning actors give worthy performances in their respective roles, which they have made their own. Christian Bale simply inhabits Batman at this point, and he adds more depth to Bruce Wayne in this third movie. Morgan Freeman provides a characteristically on point performance as ... • 15. Soundtrack Of Star Wars Star Wars is one of those franchises that spans generations, and is beloved around the world. The sights and sounds of Star Wars has prevailed throughout the decades, whether as nostalgia, or to complain about the prequel trilogy. Star Wars has become ingrained in the part of society reserved for pop culture references, memes, and wasted money on official (and not so official) merchandise. Overall, every aspect, but particularly the sounds, of the Star Wars franchise is made to connect back to the original trilogy. Despite being spread across decades and multiple facets of the franchise, the familiar, continuing sounds of Star Wars is a way of retaining continuity, and nostalgia, as well as identifying characters and themes. The scene chosen ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The sounds match the area and environments, as discussed in above paragraphs it is the robots and technology that were created within the realm of the film's universe and genre that set the environment. Aurally the sense of space is not similar to what is being visually portrayed in some parts, particularly when characters are talking; there is no reverberation off of metal or plastic when Obi Wan Kenobi is talking to Padmé in the spacious hospital room full of plastics and metal, he sounds more like he is in a closed environment, and close to the microphone. Despite this the soundscape is still used to effectively shape the environment seen on screen into a "hallucination" of a fully real world, one is able to almost sense and touch within one's mind. Most evidently at the very end scene when Darth Vader is overcome by anguish at the revelation that he killed Padmé. In that part he loses his control over the Force and starts to destroy the robots and equipment still present in the room after his surgery. One can hear the familiar sounds of bottles and glass being smashed, and crinkles of cans ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 17. Star Wars: The Force Awakens For years I was ridiculed and shunned for admittedly never watching the Star Wars saga; therefore, when I finally decided to binge–watch all six movies in preparation for the new release of Episode VII, Star Wars: The Force Awakens, my expectations were extremely high. Unfortunately, my expectations were tragically unfulfilled. The story idea was fascinating, but poorly created. In comparison, my expectation for Episode VII was also high, but unlike the first six, it did not disappoint. While critics may accuse the plot of Episode VII of being too similar to that of Episode IV, Star Wars, no detail was overlooked when putting this movie together. Episode VII outdoes the first six Star Wars films in nearly every category: acting, dialogue, writing, ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The original six movies, especially Episodes IV, V, and VI, were made in a time with far less technology than what filmmakers can use today. Naturally, the film itself is not as clear as the movies of today's standard. Some of the props, like Yoda, as well as the laser beams during fight scenes look extremely fake. The original movies were impressive for their time, but have no comparison to the quality of the newest movie (Star Wars 1977, 1980, 1983). Not only is the film itself crystal clear, the props are more detailed: BB8 even has a layer of dust covering his orange and white casing. Also, the computer generated images (CGI) are well–done and seamless, an important quality for a movie taking place in space (Star Wars: The Force Awakens ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 19. The Star Wars Film On The Vietnam War "A long time ago, in a galaxy far, far away..." This was the beginning of the first film of one of the most successful movie franchises of all time. Not only did the films eventually lead to a gross of over $27 billion between the box office, DVDs, toys, video games, etc, but it also influenced America and the rest of the world. (Forbes) The Star Wars films show similarities to various aspects of history and American society. It has been proven that George Lucas wrote the movies based on The Vietnam War, with aspects of other American events. It is evident that these aspects have had a major influence on the concept of "War in America" after the release and success of the Star Wars movies. This will be investigated by analyzing the movies, critical reviews, and other texts relating to the subject. Star Wars was originally released in 1977 and became one of the largest grossing films of all time. George Lucas developed two additional sequels and a prequel that developed the extremely successful franchise. The first film Star Wars Episode IV: A New Hope placed the viewers into the middle of a civil war between The Republic and The Empire. The story follows a young Jedi Knight (Luke Skywalker) and his journey to defeat (with a lot of help) The Empire. As the story progresses through the the next movie, more characters are introduced and Luke becomes closer and closer to completing his destiny of defeating the Empire. • 21. Star Wars Influence On American Culture From the opening text that crawl with a line "A long time ago in a galaxy far, far away..." along with John William's timeless score, American culture has always been massively impacted by the Star Wars universe and all of its wonders. Starting its first movie 1977, Star Wars created a phenomenon across the US due to its originality in storytelling and amazing works in special effects. Beyond its popularity, Star War was even selected by the Library of Congress to be preserved as a national treasure for being aesthetically, culturally and historically significant. Lucas quickly realized that in order for his universe to come to life, he was going to have to build it by hand (theneweconomy, 1). It may have sounded a little ridiculous at first, but for anyone who worked with Lucas knew that there were no impossibilities when it came to build one of the biggest franchises in the world. John Dykstra, a visual effect designer, was chosen to work as the head director in special effects by Lucas for the original trilogy described how he and his group were spending months to build models and robots from scratch to achieve the realism that Lucas wanted (theneweconomy, 1). He stated that, "Back in the days of Star Wars, we kind of walked into an empty warehouse and sat on the floor and went 'How are we going to do this?" Lucas and Dykstra were paying close attention to the details and motions of every creature and miniature in the film, especially how to make them look as life–like as possible through the use of animation and motion control photography that, surprisingly, still looks fresh today. He lived a good life, born in 1944 and getting into writing movies at a young age. After many award winning films, he wanted something that would be extraordinary, so he created Star Wars. Lucas spent long hours on the movie, working out every detail. He employs many archetypes throughout the movies to teach themes and lessons to its viewers. First, in "A New Hope", Obi–Wan's fight with Vader expresses the good vs evil conflict. When Obi– Wan states, "You can't win, Darth. If you strike me down, I shall become more powerful than you can possibly imagine" (67), he shows that good will win the fight no matter what happens. In their fight, the two are balanced with each other. Towards the end, Vader uses the overwhelming force of his talents and youth to take down Obi–Wan. Even though Obi–Wan is no longer alive, he became more powerful, showing that good will always prevail against evil. Lucas expresses how good is always more knowledgeable then evil and uses it to exploit evil's weaknesses to defeat them. Even if it seems like evil has won a small victory, good always wins more from it. Next, in "The Empire Strikes Back", Luke fights a good vs evil conflict within himself in the Dagobah cave. Luke realizes the evil inside of him when his head pops out of Darth Vader's mask, stated when the narrator says, "The black helmet and mask fall away to reveal Luke's head. • 25. Lewis And The Silent Planet Olivia Seeney Dr. Michael Elam ENGL 475 10/4/16 C.S. Lewis and the Influence of Dante in Out of the Silent Planet All throughout Lewis novels there is evidence that clearly connects the themes and symbolism from other aspects of traditional Christian literature both during and before he began writing. One of the most distinct examples of this occurring within Lewis' works is the influence that Dante had on the concepts that he reflects on while conveying thoughts to his readers. This is specifically more notable a connection between Dante and Lewis when you examine the parallels that take place within Lewis' Out of the Silent Planet and Dante's Inferno. The literary tradition left behind by Dante is both one able to influence the thoughts of others and to teach the value of Christianity through within a fictional environment. This is similar to Lewis' Space Trilogy in more ways than one, some of which include Ransom journey in place of the pilgrim as he travels through strange, new, territory in order to reach his goal, and the use of Malacandra to represent the levels of Hell. Each book in the Space Trilogy continues to expand on the possible influence that Dante may have had on Lewis while he wrote these books and aims to show Christians the truth behind the Dante's thoughts through the use of science fiction. Many elements found within Dante's Inferno are reintroduced through new ideas by Lewis within Out of the Silent Planet in order to convey Christian thoughts and ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 29. Christian Theism In A New Hope And A New Hope What would you think is the most loved and cherished movies of all time? If you asked most people Star Wars would be very high on that list of most beloved movies of all time, and I would personally agree. Despite what you think of these movies there is obviously a message behind each of these movies that teach the audience a lesson beyond the watching of the movies. The original trilogy of Star Wars models an almost perfect example of Christian theism. Obviously, we should start looking at the first movie of the trilogy, "A New Hope", to find the similarities between Star Wars and Christian theism. Luke Skywalker is introduces to the audience as the protagonist that wants to accomplish memorable deeds in his young life. He wants to do good things for everyone, and that is the first parallel is, the tangible good and evil. There are two sides of the "Force" in the Star Wars universe, a light side and a dark side, or in other words good and evil. On the light side you are supposed to be selfless, loyal, and responsible. The dark side on the other hand is all about selfishness, destruction of relationships, and getting others to do what you want for you. In the theistic worldview good is what God deems it to be, loving your neighbor, giving to the poor, and following the set rules of God. Evil is whatever goes against God, including hating other, envy, and getting what you want at the expense of others. Someone needs to save people from the destruction that evil brings into ... Lewis In the year 1625, Francis Bacon, a famous essayist and poet wrote about the influences of fear on everyday life. He stated, "Men fear death as children fear to go in the dark; and as that natural fear in children is increased with tales, so is the other" (Essays Dedication of Death). Clearly, external surroundings affect perceptions of fear as well as human nature in general. Although C.S. Lewis published the novel, Out of the Silent Planet, over three centuries after Bacon wrote his theory on fear, Lewis similarly portrayed external surrounding to manipulate perceptions of fear. "War, slavery, prostitution," events and institutions only present in "The Silent Planet," outraged Oyarsa and all of the hnau (that appeared incapable of sin). This realization ultimately marked Ransom's deep understand of fear and the ignorance of mankind. The franchise depicts a galaxy described as "far, far away" in the distant past, and portrays two important characterization like the Jedi as a representation of good, in conflict with the Sith, their evil counterpart. The overall box office produced over 4.38 billion dollars, making Star Wars one of the fifth highest grossing films of all time. Many believe the film would not have reached its highest without the prominently themed music created by John Williams. The renowned themes 'the force' and 'imperial march' are one of Williams most widely known music scores and motion pictures of all history. John Williams was able to vividly depict the characters conflict between good and evil through the use of musical elements like timbre, pitch and duration to create the individual characters. The composer utilised timbre to express the evil tyranny of the storm troopers arrival in the 'Darth Vader's theme'. At their heart, they represent the writers' attempt to use literature as a vehicle to survey contemporary social and political affairs that, if left unattended, could generate unwanted penalties for people. Dystopian and utopian literature are not to be assumed as diametrical opposites. On the contrary, and as Booker argues, the two are part of the same project, being dystopia the mirror which reflects the darkness of utopian ideals (Booker, 1994: p. 15). • 61. Maurice Sendak’s Where the Wild Things Are, In the Night... Maurice Sendak's Where the Wild Things Are, In the Night Kitchen, and Outside Over There The three titles of Maurice Sendak's famous picture book trilogy, Where the Wild Things Are, In the Night Kitchen, and Outside Over There, name what Judith Butler calls "zones of uninhabitability," places of abjection that form the borders of the self as both its constitutive outside and its intimate interior. These are dangerous places in the geography of childhood, places where the child's very life and sense of self is threatened. More frightening still, they are present places, places that exist in the same time that the child inhabits, rather than the once upon a mythical time of fairy tales and legends. Hence they are places that beckon the ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... However, I would not go so far as other critics have done in claiming that this developmental narrative is the journey of a single everychild. That is abject logic indeed, since it frames itself as a monolithic story of what constitutes a clean and proper childhood, absent particularities. No, Sendak's characters are individuals who experience their bodies, their drives, and their desires as their own; their boundaries and borderlands are distinctly personal landscapes wherein they act their own particular corporeal dramas. Nor is the lesson regarding the abject monolithic across the trilogy. Sendak's vision in the first two books involves more than a once–for–all setting of the boundaries between self and other; the children learn the possibilities and limits of embracing alterity within themselves, or at least of mapping the space of and for otherness as part of their own psychic landscape. But in the third and final book, the book that signaled the end of Sendak's career as a children's book writer and illustrator and the beginning of his work in theater, Ida's encounter with abjection is more profound, less jubilant, and more in keeping with the general logic of abjection under which the adult subject is constituted. In the first book, Where the Wild Things Are, Max wants to be a "wild thing," that is, he wants to live his body in a raw, socially unacceptable way. His mother is at first complicit ... • 63. The Lord Of The Rings Tzvetan Todorov, the author of The Fantastic: A Structural Approach to a Literary Genre, defined fantasy as "the creation of a moment of hesitation between two worlds"(qtd. Kelly, Course Introduction 2). This description of the genre compliments J.R.R Tolkien's The Lord Of The Rings trilogy due to the author's use of sub–creation to construct his alternate world. Tolkien believed that the way to create a believable, all–encompassing world was to combine fragments of reality, or the "primary world", together to construct a new, seemingly credible "secondary world". Sub–creation, if successful, forms an alternate but parallel world to reality, "which your mind can enter. Inside it, what he relates is 'true': it accords with the laws of the ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Here, Tolkien signifies that humans were moulded in the likeness of God, the ultimate creator; therefore we are able to, and should, create. This quotation highlights how his Catholic belief deeply influenced his personal philosophy, which in turn affected his writing of The Lord Of The Rings. Numerous parallels can be drawn between Christianity and the trilogy, such as that between God and The Creator Eru, who was the source of all life on Arda. Furthermore, like God, all that was created by Eru was once good, even Sauron, and it is outside forces such as power, corruption and greed that twist what is good and make it bad. Tolkien's creationist philosophy is evident and his embedded Christian messages were his attempt to reinforce his religious beliefs on a world that he felt had become too secular. It is widely known that Tolkien detested the allegorical assumptions made about his work. The author insisted that allegory was restrictive to readers and he preferred 'history, whether real or feigned'(Tolkien I, 12). As Ursula Le Guin states "fantasy is nothing but the writer's view of the world" highlighting that fact that Tolkien's life experiences heavily influenced his work (qtd Kelly, 27). Tolkien's work reflects and comments on 20th Century Western society and in doing so, enlightens his readers of a past time. In fact, this is demonstrated outright by ... • 67. Star Wars Essay Few great filmmakers can write and oversee the production of a film that will be relevant and built upon for the next 4 decades. Even fewer filmmakers can be regarded as the person who changed cinema forever. George Lucas did all of this in 1977 with the release of the film he created, originally called, "The Star Wars." He had this idea after his first feature length film "American Graffiti" in 1973. This film became popular and he later pitched his idea for a space opera to the production company. They agreed and Star Wars was born. In the beginning, it was meant to be one film, which would entail all of the story for the three films in the original trilogy, A New Hope, Empire Strikes Back, and Return of the Jedi. Due to budget ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The saga's brand consistently finds a place in the top five licensed toy brands each year, according to NPD Group (Ames)." This shows that the franchise has grown into one of the largest players in toy sales as well as revenue product. Other toy brands ranking high up include Lego, Nerf, Nintendo, Mattel, Hasbro, and Kenner. It is evident that when a single franchise, Star Wars, is available in every single one of these big name players in some form, that the franchise holds one of the largest impacts on society. The revenue coming from these sources is immense, usually averaging out to more than the original ticket sales for the films. These toys and games, intended for children, are even still relevant to those who are now adults because Star Wars is comparable to a legacy. It is passed down from generation to generation and the ones passing down the franchise are having revitalizing feelings from reminiscing upon the past. One of the main reasons many older fans are still following the later expansions of the film collections is because of the nostalgic experience. Star Wars can now be found anywhere today. The American Marketing Association elaborates upon this point in 2016 by stating that, "Today, companies like Campbell's and CoverGirl are harnessing Star Wars' marketing power, creating Star Wars–themed everything, from canned soup to ... • 69. Character Analysis: These Broken Stars Well, well, well, colour me surprised. This trilogy just chucked a Days of Blood & Starlight and went straight in for the raw, gore and desperation of war. Love story, this was not. We're in deeper, darker terrain now. And I loved it. The thing, for those who've yet to read These Broken Stars, that you must know with the first book in this trilogy is that it was a love story; tragic, desperate and bounded by socioeconomic barriers, it was the tale of two most unalike souls being brought together. For those sensitive to the presence of love in YA, the romance was a little hefty, especially considering the fact that the world building was a tad lacking (which is always disappointing in a sic–fi). But for most, the romance was perfect. Lila LaRoux and Tarver encompassed your classic play on the hate to love trope. You can't go wrong with that one and we all fell deep into its grasps. And so, for many, it would naturally be assumed that This Shattered World would welcome yet another ship for us all to pour our hearts and souls into. And since we're all picky as heck nowadays, we want the "hate to love" to be repeated, only not because we also ironically crave creativity. And you know what? ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... It's got its own merits, trust me, but I feel as though it's my duty to forewarn you all: if you're here to swoon then pull down the expectations a tad. You're not going to get an earth shattering play by play of your favourite trope. To be honest, the romance was relatively light, considering the fact that the blurb promised a "story of love". The dominating main clause of that sentence is arguably "a world torn apart by war" (granted, I may have close to no idea what I mean when I say "clause". Thanks school.) • 73. Critical Analysis on Paul Auster's the New York Trilogy Space or Afterlife: An Analysis of Paul Auster's The New York Trilogy In Steven E. Alford's analytical piece, "Spaced–out: Signification and Space in Paul Auster's 'The New York Trilogy'" principally focuses on ideas of how space is portrayed and the detachment of main characters in Paul Auster's The New York Trilogy. Alford points out: Spaces are also the apparent scene of signification, but only through a misapprehension of the missing human elements in mapped representations of space. Ultimately we will discover that the space of signification is what we have traditionally called utopia, which is not a "nowhere" but a "neither–here–nor–there" (613). Alford's arguments are correct. The main characters in the novel are often ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Quinn cannot leave his home to detach himself because he is already detached. Everything that defined Quinn is gone. The things he loved were what kept him grounded to reality, but "It had been more than five years now. He did not think about his son very much anymore, and only recently he had removed the photograph of his wife from the wall" (5). He rarely thinks about the things he used to love so he is ungrounded. Quinn taking down the photograph of his wife exemplifies his detachment within his own home. His walks can only be explained as his lost soul wandering; attempting to find his utopian purgatory, his space. He expects that one day he will somehow just come across his utopia. Unbeknownst to Quinn, in order to remove himself from his endless path he must receive a direction from a higher power. The death of Blue in Ghosts, is also relevant. Similar to Quinn, Blue experiences his death in a long process, but only after he begins his assignment given to him. His ascendance to the purgatorial state is exhibited when Auster describes, "There are moments when he feels so completely in harmony with Black, so naturally at one with the other man, that to anticipate what Black is going to do, to know when he will stay in his room and when he will go out, he need merely to look into himself (153)." WITHOUT A DOUBT, The Godfather is considered a masterpiece by many. FURTHERMORE, the subsequent Godfather sequels are excellent in their own right. The Shawshank Redemption is unquestionably a classic film, AS WELL. ALSO, one or even several movies in a series have their share of bragging rights. ALTHOUGH it is easy to award older and more classic movies with a badge of honor, there are numerous recent films that deserve praise. CURRENTLY, animation studio Pixar is the champion of this category. In the face of outstanding animated works such as Finding Nemo, Toy Story, Wall–E, Inside Out, Up, and countless short films, most other animated movies pale BY COMPARISION. YET one film is strangely absent – Forrest Gump. One cannot open up a discussion about great movies and not mention Forrest Gump, and though it may not be the best movie ever, it is STILL a superb work of art. (That classic line will FOREVER be remembered: "Run, Forrest, Run!") OF COURSE, foreign films are also a huge contender in this debate. Spirited Away, FOR EXAMPLE, won the Academy Award for Best Animated Feature in 2002. ON THE WHOLE, people can feverishly support their "best" film until the end of time, but what it all comes down to is a matter of opinion. • 77. The Influence of Star Wars in Today´s Culture Essay Motion Pictures have always had a strong influence in today's culture, but maybe none as prevalent as Star Wars. Originating with Episode 4 A New Hope, the series boomed from 1977 to 2005 with yet another addition coming in 2015. The strongest of the series was the original trilogy episodes 4, 5, and 6, all generally released in the 1980s. As one of the strongest film francaises still today, it's impact within the 1980s was only the tip of the iceberg.
