Instructions Not Included By All Standards
Instructions Not Included Imagine, it is a sunny day and the light reflects off of the surrounding sea and onto an ideal beach home. Nothing but
beautiful people, sunshine, and good times. But alas good times do not always last as next comes a blast from the past so powerful it is still felt 8
years into the future! If all those images have been conjured up in the viewer's mind, then you have the basic plot to this foreign film 'Instructions Not
Included'. But wait there is more I promise. Firstly, I would like to say that overall the film by all standards was not at all bad. When one thinks of
a foreign film you might think of a really bad, poorly edited, or low funded film. With the major reason for it being foreign, the obvious reason
being that it was not made in Hollywood. However, this movie takes all of the preconceptions about foreign films and turns it upside down. With a
budget of nearly 5 million dollars (Instructions), and only being filmed in two locations in Mexico the movies overall quality is actually quite
astounding. Furthermore, I would like to commend the directors and editors on doing Hollywood level job, creating and making the final product
as it is better then something you might see in a low budget jaws knock off made here in the United States. Secondly I would like to write something
of a quick summary so that the movie can be better understood. The movie begins as many do as of late with a man, or to be more specific a bachelor.
Of course

The Postcolonial Theory Of Third Cinema
One of the most popular and important film theory 's that it still around today is Third Cinema also known as the Postcolonial theory. Third cinema
emerged in early 1960 through the 1970 's in Latin America and was seen as a militant tool leading to freedom and a revolution. Third cinema was not
only about films rather it was about literature and artwork as well as political manifestos written by filmmakers. The whole idea behind third cinema is
that it "refers to the colonized, neo–colonized, or decolonized nations and "minorities" of the world whose economic and political structures have been
shaped and deformed within the colonial process" (Stam, 93). Third Cinema had emerged mainly from the Cuban Revolution during the 1950's but was
influenced by different movements including Italian neorealism and direct cinema and different tools and techniques that the world had not been
exposed to yet. Third cinema rejected the normal conventions of Hollywood as these films were being produced in second and third world countries. For
these filmmakers, it was all about guerilla filmmaking, which meant that they would often be creating low budget films using a handheld camera with
smaller film crews than usual. These films would often use montage as well as different combinations of sounds and images in order to get audiences
to think about the film and what messages it was trying to relay. Since it was all about politics, these filmmakers were not aiming to get rich or gain

The Evolution of Digital Film
In order for digital film to exist like it does today it had to evolve from something. Digital film evolved from Film or celluloid film as it is originally
more recognized. I have a few questions that I wish to cover early on and continue to develop as time goes on. What is digital Cinema and what are
the advantages and or disadvantages of it over film. What is film celluloid and where did it originate from ? Why did digital film start ? finally what
is next for digital film is there more to come or will it transition to something else ?.
Firstly celluloid film is a thin sheet of celluloid, created from nitrocellulose and camphor. Celluloid can be traced back to as far as 1856 to an
English man called Alexander Parkes. Parkes has been found to be "the first person who was granted the first patent which described a plastic
material which he called 'Parkesine' ". (1) However it wasn't actually Parkes that patented celluloid. John Wesley Hyatt an inventor and his brother
Isaiah who actually patented their material as celluloid. So celluloid originated from New Jersey in the United States. Celluloid was actually created
to become a replacement for the use of ivory in many products. However is made its way into film industry later on. This was primarily down to the
work of John H. Stevens. "John H. Stevens was a chemist at the Celluloid Manufacturing Company" . (1) He discovered that a material know as amyl
acetate was a "solvent for diluting celluloid" (1) This discovery

Horror In Stephen King's Why We Crave Horror Movies
The first time I watched a horror movie, I was nine years old. While all of my cousins shrieked and closed their eyes, I felt totally engaged. Will we
become more violent if we watch these movies? Will we become a gore–loving, emotionally insensitive society? What is it about scary movies that we
love so much? It all comes back to the Human Condition. Facing our fears, establishing our sense of normalcy, and experiencing a weird sort of fun
are all solid claims that Stephen King states in his essay "Why We Crave Horror Movies."
Horror is an opportunity for us humans to face our fears. Reading Stephen King's short story "Strawberry Spring"is a perfect example that we use
horror to "show that...we are not afraid" (King, "Why We Crave" 1). We go to prove ourselves as brave. In comparison, watching horror movies is
alike "daring the nightmare" (King, "Why We Crave" 1). In this case, the "nightmare" is facing our fears, considering horror films are equivalent to
going through a literal nightmare. To point out, the narrator in "Strawberry Spring" is "enchanted by that dark and mist–blown strawberry spring, and
by the shadow of violent death that walked through it..." (King, "Strawberry Spring" 1). As a matter of fact, we are all enchanted by the darkness in
the story just as the narrator is. Additionally, King describes this process as riding a roller coaster by reason of "a really good horror movie may...
surprise a scream out of us... the way we may scream when the roller coaster

Analysis Of The Film 'Maheshinte Driksathhikaram'
After the most talked about film of Malayalam film industry in last year "Maheshinte Prathikaram" ("Mahesh's Revenge") director Dileesh Pothan and
actor Fahadh Faasil comes together for "Thondimuthalum Driksakshiyum" (Roughly translated as "The Exhibit and the Witness"). Even though it's
only the second film from Pothan, due to the immense fan following for his previous film which even generated a trend of finding minute details from
that film and labeling it as Pothettan brilliance, there was much hype to live up to. By making the subject into a dark humor rather than the previous
film which was more of a feel good film, Pothan was able to satisfy and surprise his fans.
The film begins in a rural village near Alappuzha where chance encounters leads into a love affair between Prasad and Sreeja. Their inter–caste
marriage prompts them to shift to Kasargod. On a bus journey Sreeja's gold chain is snatched by a man behind her while she fell asleep. As the
chain is being snatched she comes out of the sleep only to find the man swallowing it. With the help of passengers and employees of the bus the thief
is brought to the nearby Sheni police station, the man denying the theft all the while. The only witness to the theft is Sreeja who was half asleep. So
the police decides to take the man into custody and wait for a day to find if the chain can be found in his shit.
Just like in his previous film Pothan manages to make the locations into characters that are inevitable to the

Analysis Of Los Olvidados
With a great reputation for its historical significance, 'Los olvidados' (1951), a film shot in Mexico City, directed by Luis BuГ±uel, endorsed the
defining point of his profession. Having studied the given excerpt of the script from a scene of the film, this report will not only portray intriguing
political, historical and social aspects, but also the phonological, morphological and lexical aspects and how they influence the given content. The
geographical location of this film has also proven to be of relevant influence. BuГ±uel succeeded to attract the wider world's interest into his work as
it was his intention to make everyone realise the truth. Ironically, BuГ±uel being a surrealist director, Los olvidados was not a surreal film. It was the
first film directly addressing not only the issues identified with the Mexican society but also Mexican cinema itself. From here, the attributes of
Mexican cinema were perpetually replaced.
Content Analysis
Los olvidados is based around the unfortunate events of streetboys whom gradually commit lawlessness and breach the law under the influence on
Jaibo, their leader. The given excerpt of the script takes place in the beginning of the film, set in the Mexican slums. It is understood that Jaibo has
escaped from reform school, spots the boys in the street and reveals his encounters of 'the inside' to them. Many themes are picked up upon throughout
this scene, the most fundamental being: Child poverty, crime, machismo and more.
Commencing one of the main noticeable themes is poverty, which can be seen towards the end of the given excerpt of the script. Child poverty is
presented where Jaibo asks for a cigarette, which Cacarizo replies to with 'Ni cigarros, ni quinto, mano.'(Pountain: 209). It is inferred that the boys
have essentially nothing which can be linked to the historical aspects of Mexico city may have influenced BuГ±uel's work. Due to the Partido
Revolucionario Institucional (1927) creating an economy based on the political views of themselves and the more prestigious citizens of mexico, with
only the rich getting wealthier, leaving the rest unprivileged and poverty–stricken. This also meant further widening the gap between the prosperous

Why We Crave Horror Stephen King Analysis
Stephen King said, "Monsters are real, and ghosts are real too. They're inside us, and sometimes, they win." This quote sums up the arguments made
in the article "Why We Crave Horror" and what King believes. Stephen King makes three correct claims saying that humans crave horror to have a
peculiar sort of fun, face our fears, and reestablish our feelings of normalcy.
Humans use horror to have a peculiar type of fun. Knowing that this horrific event won't actually happen allows people to enjoy watching it. Stephen
King says in his article, "Why We Crave Horror Movies", that "One critic has suggested that if pro football has become the voyeur's version of combat,
then the horror film has become the modern version of public lynching"(2). ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Humans typically want to avoid the subject of death so when they read horror or other scenarios about people dying they face their fears of death. In
"Strawberry Spring", by Stephen King, there was a college student who had "her throat cut from ear to ear"(1). While reading this humans our facing
their fears on the subject of death. Having fears is part of the Human Condition and is completely normal. Even though these fears are normal, most
people still try to face them and horror is a way to do that.
The last claim that Stephen King makes is that humans crave horror to re–establish their feeling of normalcy. Humans are jealous of others and have
insecurities about themselves which is a part of the Human Condition but horror gives them a opportunity to change these views. Compared to the
narrator and the events of "Strawberry Spring," we "reestablish our feelings of essential normality" (King, "Why We Crave" 1). When readers of
"Strawberry Spring" discover that the narrator had been the killer they are reassured that even their low points in life haven't been as bad as that.
An example from Stephen King is "Freda Jackson as the horrible melting women in Die, Monster, Die!"(King, "Why We Crave" 1). He uses Freda
Jackson as an example because when you compare yourself to her than you are "light years away from true ugliness"(King, "Why We Crave" 1). Also,
even if people feel like they've done

New Wave Cinema
In David Cook's, "A History of Narrative Film," it is said that "the prevailing mode of postwar French cinema was literary adaption, which caused
French films to become increasingly verbal and theatrical. It was against this tendency– identified as 'the tradition of quality' by Francois Truffaut and
the other critics writing in Cashiers du Cinema, that the New Wave reacted in the late 1950's and 1960's."
Camera–stylo, which would permit the cinema "to become a means of expression as supple and sbutle as that of written language and would
therefore accord filmmakers the status of authors. Astruc's notion was to break away from the tyranny of narrative in order to evolve a new form of
audiovisual language" (Cook, 350). Astruc went on to describe how the problem of the cinema is how to express thought. "The creation of this
language has preoccupied all the theoreticians and writers in the history of cinema, from Einstein down to the script–writers and adaptors of the sound
cinema" (Cook, 350). ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

The French New Wavewas all about freedom and how it should seem personal. The 400 Blows does just that by telling us a story about a boy
"coming of age." As part of the New Wave, for The 400 Blows, the movie was not only shot on location, but natural lighting was used to give the
movie a realistic film. In addition to this, many producers/directors during this time used mobile cameras (handheld). These were many characteristics
that these artists used in their films. It was real and it was raw and it was just the beginning for

Hindi Film and Masculinity
The term Bollywood is relatively new title that congregates various types of films that stem from all around India and sadly get put into one single
category, often times the films being underestimated by U.S. pop culture. The films' subject matter and themes have continued to evolve, as does the
country of India, and the change is all seen reflecting from the films social and political themes and concerns. When the industry began the films
plots spanned from all across the map, in order to compensate for language differences almost key terms were created which would set the staple
for the themes and motives. These phrases or words were about lust and love, revenge or justice for wrong doings, good and bad as well as killing.
With these themes people all across the nation were united, one way or another people related to the films that were being viewed. It was at this point
and time that Hindi cinema became a voice for those who could not be heard in politics, but actions would be glorified or exaggerated to appease all
status of the caste system. Throughout pivotal moments in history, new themes would be expressed throughout film.
Different cultures have different concepts of masculinity. If one were to compare American films tropes and Hindi ones there would be some vast
differences. For instance, the American action heroes tend to treat the damsel as an item, while in Hindi films the character

The Gold Rush Compare And Contrast
Silent film has no recorded sound but can include background music and special effects. Since there was no way to record people talking, music was
used instead. Music establishes setting, creates mood, atmosphere and may foreshadow. Charlie Chaplin is one of the most famous producers and
directors of the silent film era. Not only did he write, he acted and scored movies too. In Charlie Chaplin's The Gold Rush (1925), the dance of the
rolls in the official version was officially composed by Chaplin to help correlate with his actions by using an Orchestra. It was later recreated;
however, it was composed using a piano. Although, people of that time period may argue that Chaplin's version is the best one and more effective
because it is an original, the piano version is the best. There are many factors to look at when considering which one is better. The two versions are
both great but the piano version is a better fit for the scene and the movie as a whole. The genre of the movie is a comedy/drama therefore, the ... Show

When I watched the video with the orchestrated version, I was a bit bored and not entertained at all when the scene is supposed to be funny. It
could also be because that was like one of the first silent films that I have ever watched. This could be different for those who lived during the silent
film era because they are not used to comedy like that of today. The thing that does not make sense however is why Chaplin looks depressed while
doing the dance. He does not even smile or anything. I am sure there is a double meaning. If so, the orchestrated piece would make more sense and be
the best fit for the scene even though there are minor areas where the music does not parallel the actions. In the piano version there are many major
keys being used compared to the orchestra one there is not that many that are

Cultural Revoluation in China
One of the most significant changes occurred in the wake of the Cultural Revolution. During the revolution itself, China was virtually cut off from the
rest of the world in a form of extreme "cultural protectionism" (Hong, 1998, p.2). There was a severe lack of cultural imports during the Cultural
Revolution, regardless of whether they were industrial or cultural imports. However, under Deng Xiaoping's leadership, an era of reform began in
China. The nation began to open itself up politically and economically, leading to widespread importation of foreign products during the 1980s. Some
of the complexities of Chinese media start to emerge during this period, particularly in the interaction between global and local forces. The importation
of Western goods is a combination of both internal and external factors. From a global or external standpoint, factors include the popularity of Western
products, the rise of global trade, and worldwide technological development. On the other hand, internal factors deal more with changes in government
intervention, new media policies, and shifts in the makeup of society itself (Hong, 1998, p.3). With the opening up of China in the 1980s, the country
soon became one of the biggest buyers in the global television programming market. Massive importation soon led to imitation, as can be seen in the
importation and imitation of telenovelas. In this case, it was specifically the impact of the global product being consumed in a local market that

Code Switching Of English In Bollywood
Research Question 3 How English is used in Bollywood films ? 1.Code–switching with English in the Indian situation English in Bollywood frequently
takes the form of code–switching. In a bilingual speech community, speakers tend to mix words, phrases, clauses and sentences when they
communicate with others. They are able to switch linguistically built upon different situations. When two languages are expressed in this way, they
differ remarkable from the same languages as spoken in their separate social systems. This kind of interference on the discourse level is known as
code–switching (Malhotra, S. 1980). Since 1957, English was spoken by upper and middle social class in India for social and economic reasons and
then it gradually became a symbol of higher social status. Consequently, a handful of upper middle class North Indians can speak both Hindi and

The Art World Of The 1970 ' S Essay
In the art world of the 1970's, Mary Kelly responded directly to the issues raised in Mulvey's article often making works that attempt to reclaim
feminine identity. Most of Kelly's films are works of research and documentation that concern ideas of women's roles and women's work. In the early
1970s Kelly was involved in the making of the film Night Cleaners (1970–1975). The film explored contemporary issues of feminist activism in
following a group of working–class female service labourers and feminist activists attempting to draw attention to their issues to build a union. The
film utilises documentary style, simple mimesis and minimal editing to build a more direct connection between the subjects and the audience. Using
the stories of real female cleaners and showcasing the most abject of the labours, such a toilet cleaning, Night Cleaners presented a 'warts and all'
perspective on women's work. While working as crew on the film, Kelly's role as a feminist activist meant Kelly was also diegetically involved in the
film. Kelly saw the 'radical potential' in the film medium and she utilised her work on Night Cleaners as a way to develop her artistic productivity in
the realm of moving image. Expanding her feminist ideologies beyond specific concerns of women's manual labour, Kelly's later moving image work,
Antepartum (1973), focused on the labour of motherhood. Antepartum is an ninety–second long looped moving image work depicting Kelly's own

As cultural identity being questioned in global screen due to the influences of transnational cinema and Diasporas in different places, this clip question
further the possibilities in future transnational cinema. Through the emergence of cinema styles, all films are to be considered transnational. This
essay will argue that transnational cinema could be emerging to a new level in the film industry. The clip provided with the essay explores the potential
of transnational films with the context of films studied included in this subject.

Hess and Zimmermann mention that conventional categories have blurred and there's demands for new political and aesthetic responses in
transnational cinema (John Hess 2006). These transnational films I believe would be growing significantly in the film industry as a part of film history.
As seen in most third transnational films from Asia countries, "popular cultural products criss–cross cultural borders everyday" therefore these cultures
remain circulating in transnational cinema (Aquilia 2006). The power of transnational cinema could not be ignored as global screen reflects a
transnational cultural exchange (Aquilia 2006). My clip shows that those sections of films we studied consisting crossover boundaries of actors and
actresses, overseas settings and different cultures portrayed. Athique also argues that non–Indians and people with little Indian history background
found enjoyment in the mixture of Bombay films (Athique 2008). Thus, transnational cinema in both ways depicted the cultural identity audiences can
relate to, as well as transnational culture exchange among the globe.
Transnational cinema is a developing concept. It changes alongside the film industry. The ever–increasing of Diasporas and ever–developing cultural
identity help shape transnational cinema. Transnational cinema is an emergence of cultural phenomenon and it develops though time. The clip I
created aims to

The dominant feature that the films share is the use of narration to guide the viewer through each plot. They are the same in how they are used to
describe settings and some situations. In Amelie, this manifests at one point as the narrator describing the activities of the local nuns on a warm and
humid day. In Y Tu Mama Tambien, there are many examples of the narrator describing the political and economic climates that Mexicans exist in
and must deal with. The use of narration is different in several ways as well. In Amelie, the narration is very descriptive, as the narrator's description

Raymond Dufayel, a painter known by others as "The Glass Man" for his brittle bones, plays the role of a sage who guides Amelie in her pursuit of
love. Another character who plays only one role is Mr. Collignon, the mean grocer who verbally abuses his mentally–disabled employee Lucien. Unlike
the characters of Amelie, those in Y Tu Mama Tambien are realistic and complex, so much so that thefilm can be considered to be a character study. A
character that is especially complex is Luisa. From the very beginning she had been hiding her true feelings and intentions from the boys, both in regard
to how she had plans to sleep with them and in how she hides her sadness over her husband's infidelity and, as the viewer finds out at the end of the
film, the cancer that will kill her very soon. Of course, Julio and Tenoch are also very complex, and they mature together through the adventure with
Luisa. They start out being boastful about their sexual exploits while rather sexually inexperienced, and, through both conversation in the car rides and
sexual encounters with Luisa, begin to learn more about sex, themselves, and each other. Unfortunately, while they allowed for personal development,
the experiences the two went through together ended up destroying their relationship.

The Cyclical Teen Musical Film
The Cyclical Teen Musical Film Considered by Jane Feuer to be "the only form of musical that retains widespread popularity" (123), the teen musical
film is a cyclical sub–genre of the musical film that keeps coming back again and again since the 1960s, proving that it is a sub–genre here to stay.
And since this is a cyclical sub–genre, its historical development is also cyclical in matter: it develops slightly throughout the cycle, as per many other
film genres, but always seems to return back to its original narrative structure and conventions, even through the stylistic and sociocultural changes
throughout the decades. Each time the teen musical film has come back into mainstream popularity, the films are always characterized by their
dual–focus structure – primarily a male–female main character pairing – and the two thematic elements typical of youth films, as described by Timothy
Shary: the growing up theme, and a conformity/rebellion binary. The only changes are caused by sociocultural means, including, but not limited to, the
Rock n' Roll musicals of the 70's, the Punk musicals beginning in the late 70's, and the female–centered narratives of the 80s. Ever since the
introduction of sound in the late 1920s and 1930s, the film musical has been a prominent genre. However, up until the end of the "Golden Age" of the
film musical, the majority of these musical films produced were geared towards an adult audience to help raise morale during the depression, World

of the culture of Eastern Germany's socialist political society, despite being created under the constant threat of state censorship. The first generation of

The first time a member of the band makes an unwanted towards Sunny, he is not blamed for making her uncomfortable, rather Sunny is seen as at

The Evolution of Film Essay example
In the early times of narrative cinema there was litter pressure on the filmmakers for the evolution of film forms before nickelodeons (Salt, 31) as
cinema had not become a mass cultural product and film was still just a novelty expected to die out like rock n roll. And so the demand was low and
so the supply could remain unoriginal. Mary Jane's Mishap was made in 1903 when 'multi–scene films were becoming popular' (Salt, 32). Mary Jane's
Mishap is notable for its use of experimental and inventive shot transitions. It used a vertical wipe to instead of 'separate successive scenes' (Salt, 32)
(as it cuts to a shot width a wider frame of the same locale) but to change the zoom level. This frame is essentially an insert and borderline... Show more

In big bold letter 'PARRAFIN' the flammable oil. Without this shot the viewer would be perplexed as to why she exploded and allows the narrative to
flow as it could be water or any other fluid for all they know as cleverly Smith used this mise–en–scene to explain the narrative instead of an intertitle
before the explosion which would have removed all suspense, tension and mystery especially after she moved to the cameras to show her gesturing a
bright idea. Though this close–up could also be argued by Gunning of being of the cinema of attractions as 'For a time [in cinema] close–ups were only
used as an attraction to see an images but larger than life but 'inciting visual curiosity' (Gunning, pg 58) rather being evolutionary towards narrative
cinema. The close–ups heighten the 'only [tool they] they have at their disposal, a language of gestures' (Burch, 224) musser idea
Mary Jane's Mishap combined the cinema of attraction trick film with the viewers want for narrative. 'The decline in their [trick films] commercial
importance was already evident by 1906' (Salt, 40) Smith used a jump cut to create the illusion of Mary Jane exploding into smoke by subtracting her
and adding smoke in the successive shot. He also uses superimposition to create a ghost liken creature. Like an avatar for its day. This shows narratives
cinema still being influenced by the cinema of attractions as to make an entertaining film.

Female Characters In Film Essay
"Women have mainly played decorative objects in Hindi cinema for a long time. Or, even in films where they had important roles, they are more
victims and martyrs or victimizers of other women" – Dr. Shoma Chatterjee (Award winning author, film scholar and journalist, India). Even though
Hindi cinema focused more on Male protagonist centrality but during the 1950's and 60's Hindi cinema produced films which highlighted Female
characters as orphans, wanderers and even Warriors at times. Despite the fact that those films were not women–centric, they still portrayed women as
strong characters having the qualities which were supposed to be associated with the male characters for example: Struggling against society for

Leela here was shown as an orphan who had no idea about what her son was up to while her son Raj Kapoor was shown as a wanderer and martyr both.
Towards the end of the movie where Raj shows his anger and holds justice Ragunath responsible for murdering his mother, Leela once again stops Raj
from attacking Justice Ragunath by saying that no He is your father, once again female character was used to reassure the male dominance in the
scene. The Bhabi of Justice Ragunath played the negative character who actually convinced Ragunath to kick his wife out of the house. Her character
too showcased the criteria of women being given roles just to complement the male character by playing his sister, mother, wife etc.
Nargis on the other hand portrayed different characteristics as compared to Leela's character. Nargis was shown as someone who took a stand and
fought against the dominant male figure to seek justice for Leela (orphan) and Raj (Wanderer). The opening shot of Nargis in the film showed her as
a strong character and the fact that she was willing to fight a case against Justice Ragunath already predicted how strong her character will be further
in the film. From the start till the very end Nargis' was shown as someone who follows her heart and does what she feels is right knowing that it might
create problems for her. However in some parts even her character reassured the male dominance in the film,

An Exploration to the History of Bollywood Dance In 2008, the movie "Slum dog Millionaire" inspired a new dance craze, quickly spreading across
the globe. Due to the movies, popular hit song, "Jai Ho" and the famous choreographed dance shown in a memorable performance during the closing
credits of the film, known as Bollywood dance, has exploded into dance studios, workout facilities, and films worldwide. For decades, the infusion of
song and dance has been a vital element of the Indian and Hindu film industry. Bollywood dance is not an easy topic to discuss because it does not

The fundamental nature of the ancient text Natya Shastra can be explained as a guide to the traditional Hindu theatre. It describes Bharata Natyam key
elements, such as; mudras, specific hand movements and positions used to convey the stories, facial expressions, body movements and postures.
Additionally, explained in the Natya Shastra, the dancer must use emotions, known as "rasas" to convey her story. There are eight basic rasas; love,
humor, pathos, anger, heroism terror, disgust and wonder, added later was serenity. Families and teachers who taught the devadasis, made a conscience
effort to continue the teachings of this dance for generations through oral tradition. Originally performed for royalty and the wealthy, eventually
devadasis, in some areas, were considered prostitutes and priests were known as pimps. The devadasis reached an all time low when the British began
colonization of India toward the end of the nineteenth century. They were shocked to see women singing in dancing in temples, with very little or no
clothing. In 1927, temple dancing in India was banned. However, it continued to survive, in 1934 Rukmini Devi decided to establish a school,
Kalashektras, in Madras. She paved the way for a more respectable dance movement. When the school was established, Rukmini, changed the name
from Sadir to Bharata Natyam, due to its negative history of being associated with prostitution. Now, exclusively

increasing the revenue collection. Here comes into play the magic of marketing. As of September 2014, the number of active internet users in India

I have evaluated six encounters with a variety of industries; they are all from the service sector. A service sector business is one in which the
perceived value of the offering to the buyer is determined more by the service rendered than the product offered.
The services I encountered have various levels of intangibility. For example, my service encounter at Odeon cinemas included physical aspects such as
the theatre, popcorn, and tickets. However, with the telephone banking service encounter there is almost no tangible aspect.
The services I encountered also varied in the separability of the buyer and provider. For services such as going to the hairdressers, it is essential for the

Review of the Film Adaptation of The Butcher Boy Essay
Review of the Film Adaptation of The Butcher Boy 'The butcher boy' was made into a film adaptation in 1997 by Neill Jordan and author of the
original book Patrick McCabe. The Novel was highly praised and controversial. Many saw it as the best account of Irish childhood. Its time frame is
reminiscent of the early 1960's. It is about a young boy called Francie Brady who becomes isolated from reality and eventually commit's the ultimate
sin of murder from this isolation he is experiencing. He is the victim of a dysfunctional family and of the effects of modernization in Ireland at this
time and we soon realize that he has been raised in an atmosphere of inhumanity. Both Novel and film cover themes such as ... Show more content on

Most importantly the film uses a lot of comedy which carries off very well in the film as it did in the novel. As in McCabe's book, the film is not
just a story about social victims in 1960's Ireland but a story that explores a society through the eyes of a child called Francie Brady in a time of
modernisation . The setting of "The Butcher Boy" was in Clones Co.Monaghan. Jordan decided to have the characters also speak in a Monaghan
accent which mirrored McCabe's. As this was a film to be set in the accents of Monaghan "all the actors who were not native speakers went to
considerable trouble to master this tongue".# Not only was Jordan bringing this mainstream film production to Ireland but to Monaghan. This was
a boost for any town or city to get the chance to be in a blockbuster and 'For McCabe, it was a remarkable experience to return to his home town
with a motion picture crew in tow'# The setting of the film was a very important aspect of the movie in my opinion because if Jordan failed to pick
a place as ideal as McCabe's hometown then it might have been too outside the domain of the novel and may not have worked as perfect as it did.
The fact that Jordan went with Monaghan as the location of the film shows just how close he wanted to get to the novel and to the writer. It would
have been just as easy to keep all the filming in Dublin or Galway and without the

Children Of Men Film Analysis
As the protagonists go through many difficulties to accomplish their ambition they use many different ways to travel that help establish the mood of
the film. Although the means of travel help establish the mood in both films, the particular means of travel differ, which gives the two films
different moods. In Children of Men, there are several different ways the characters get from one place to another. Some examples include driving in
a car or bus, and traveling by boat. However, whenever the characters go from places to places they pass through depressing areas, such as war zones
or run–down immigrant areas. In addition, each time they travel someone either dies, or another highly depressing event happens. When Theo, Kee,
Julian, and Mariam are traveling by car to get somewhere safe, they are ambushed, and Julian is shot. In the middle of the film, Theo, Kee, and the
midwife are transported by bus to a refugee camp, where there are people getting off the buses being stripped of their clothes. Finally, at the end of
the film when Theo, Kee, and the baby are traveling by boat in the filthy water Theo gets shot and dies, leaving Kee and her baby to be rescued by
The Human Project. In each case, the setting sets up the depressing mood when they travel, but the worst events of people dying and horrible images
happen during the time the characters are traveling. On the contrary, in Up, Carl travels to Paradise Falls by getting his house to float in the sky by

Italian Neorealism ( 1945-1953 )
Italian neorealism (1945–1953), through directors like Roberto Rossellini and Vittorio De Sica, made its trademark on cinematic history not only in
Italy, but also throughout the world. It was films such as Rome Open City (Roma cittГ aperta, 1945), The Bicycle Thief (Ladri di biciclette, 1948), and
Umberto D., (1952) whose style of depicting the harsh economic and social realities of the poor and working class of Italy took off as a new
cinematic style after World War II. Neorealism is a response to desperate economic situations and often illustrates suffering, poverty, injustice, and/or

In truth, it is a metaphor for a better tomorrow with the lingering theme of the hope and promise of children. This theme further emphasized in the
final scene of Rome Open City with the children walking out of frame. With the city of Rome as the backdrop for this final scene, it offered a sense
of renewed hope for the future. Rossellini balances this theme of renewed hope with trauma and tragedy, in particular the death of the main female
character, Pina. The audience is first introduced to Pina as both a bride–to–be and mother–to–be. The "to–be" attached to mother and bride suggests
that there is a future. However, Rossellini brings this "future" to a tragic end in the closing scenes of the film. As Pina pushes her way through the

through the streets, she is tragically shot down and dies in the middle of the street. Francesco manages to escape Nazi custody, making it a senseless

Celebrities Have a Moral Responsibility to Be Good Role...
Celebrities have a moral responsibility to be good role models for the society, would you agree?
First of all by using the dictionary the main definitions can be broken down; the definition for a celebrity is 'a famous or well known person'. The
definition of moral responsibility is 'the idea that a person has moral obligations in certain situations.' The definition of a good role model is 'a person
whose behaviour, example, or success is or can be emulated by others, especially by younger people.'
Our opinion as a group is that every human being has a moral responsibility towards society although celebrities tend to have the upper hand when it
comes down to being 'good' role models. Our three arguments for this topic would be: First, ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Also there is Chris Gardner the inspiration for the movie 'Pursuit of Happiness'.
Our third argument is 'Celebrities influence the youth of today'. The youth of today are much modernised, instead of reading books of history and
relating to the heroes of yesterday, they tend to watch movies, TV shows and make the celebrities the hero of today. The main reason why the youth
especially make celebrities their role models is because at one point of time in their life they want to become like those role models, they want to
have same amount of fame, they want to be popular and loved amongst others like the role models. Some of them get inspired so much that they even
want to look exactly like the role models. For example: Harman Badeja a fairly new Indian movie star got so Inspired by Hritik Roshan a superstar in
Bollywood, that he has made his face and hair look exactly like him.
Having stated all the above points, our counter argument is 'celebrities cannot always be considered as 'good' role models'. Some of the actions
committed by the celebrities can be inappropriate and a very bad influence for the general population/audience. Henceforth why there is a censor
board in place. The censor board is there to prevent celebrities showing or anything which can be classified as 'harmful' for the audience. They try their

A Beautiful Mind
How has the feature film you have studied captured and sustained the viewers interest?
Yes exactly and today in my seminar I will identify these key words to analyze and answer this question.
In the film 'A Beautiful Mind', the director Ron Howard, along with writers, producers etc have used many techniques in order to capture the viewers
interest and sustain it through out the film. I have identified the most important techniques used as:
–how the actors are presented through characterization
–various techniques of cinematography and special effects
–and the fast pace of the film to make it exiting for the audience
Most of us already knew that people suffering from schizophrenia do things a bit differently from the norm, ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
This helps capture the viewers interest as they grow a connection with these characters, and sustains the audiences attention as we learn more about
them as the plot develops.
Ron Howard has used cinematography and special effects to create impact as it engages the audience. It helps introduce an excellent main character
and helps us experience the reality of the mental illness. We see most of the film through the Nash's point of view, helping us understand his
situation and the reality of his delusions. Characters who are in Nash's hallucinations are always seen from his point of view through handheld
camera shots. A good example of these point of view shots is the scene where Nash believes Parcher is going to hurt Alicia and his child so he lunges
at her in an attempt to protect her. However we also see through Alicia's point of view that "John, there's nobody there" and Nash seems to be attacking
her through a senseless act of violence.
When we do not see the story through Nash's eyes we see him through views such as circling Steadicam shots like Nash's visit to the Pentagon. At first
this type of shot arouses the exhilaration of the visit but later on we can relate it back to his schizophrenia.
Lighting is also a technique commonly used by the director to set Nash apart from others. We often see Nash's face in the shadows symbolizing that he
is troubled and different from a normal person socially, whereas cinematography has been used to light up

Analysis Of Blind Light

Viewing Review – Blind Light
The film Blind Light by Sarah Pucill is an experimental 16mm film that was presented as a part of the Cinematheque's "Studio DIM Cinema". This
twenty–two minute film, made in 2007, consists of a series of long, slow shots of the sky from the interior of a studio loft. In these shots, the filmmaker
gradually adjusts the exposure and zoom, affecting the brightness levels and perspective. Pucill also controls the shot by closing and opening the blinds
on the windows being looked out of. Additionally, the audio on thefilm is largely absent with only a few short comments and outside noise
sporadically throughout. This film creates a lonely and isolated atmosphere with it's use of durational shots, absence of action and bare setting.
Narration is also used to further this effect. For example, after the long period of silence at the beginning of the film, the artist says in a calm voice "I
can't look, so I'll shut it out". The nature of this phrase expresses a sense of defeat, which can be interpreted literally, in terms of the brightness of the
light coming from outside as well as metaphorically, referring to a painful experience or difficult situation that might be easier to disregard than
address. Following this statement, the second line is "I want to see the sun, to be blinded", which contradicts the former, though follows a similar theme,
evident of a troubled mindset.

THE HOLLYWOOD MACHINE
During The Great Depression going to the cinema was the best way to escape the harsh grip of reality. One could go buy a movie ticket and watch "a
cartoon, a newsreel, a B–feature and the main film, which amounted to something like four hours ' entertainment for a nickel, the price back then of
a gallon of petrol or a packet of cigarettes." Early in the 30s films were about being rich and carefree. As the Depression took hold of the audience
members and the filmmakers, films that touched on the topic of gangsters, social injustice, involving war, and being broke grew in popularity.
Following this period of extreme social tension films began to climb and climb higher on the ladder of popularity and fantasy. More and more films
about were being written and produced. (Whitington, 2008)
By the 50s Hollywood had became a factory for film production. Movies Ranches, also known as production houses and production studios, had

complete the entire game without killing a single monster, something that has never been done before. The entire game shines light on a topic that was
at the center of scrutiny back in the mid 1990's and is still relevant in the media today, video game violence. While many attack video games for being

It is revealed here that he is the husband of Toriel (Goatmom). He is oddly kind to the player, and explains that when they are ready to battle then
they can follow him to the barrier. If the player wins the battle, they are free to leave the underworld, thus ending Undertale. This is the only time in
the game where the player must fight, this cultural forum is that while there is always a topic of video game violence at hand, sometimes even games
where it is all about pacifism and being kind hearted, can lead to a bad ending when dealing with someone who has nothing to lose. Asgore, has lost
everything in his life. Asgore wants to kill all humans because the humans killed his son Asriel, and when he went on this rampage Toriel left him.
Asgore has nothing left to lose, and the player must defend themselves, because there are times where, no matter how good–hearted one is, a choice
must be made. Undertale is the perfect game to challenge the cultural norm that video games must be violent to be good. Toby Fox used psychological
efforts to teach the player that they do not have to kill, but in the end, if there is nothing left to lose, go down

Instructions Not Included By All Standards

  • 1. Instructions Not Included By All Standards Instructions Not Included Imagine, it is a sunny day and the light reflects off of the surrounding sea and onto an ideal beach home. Nothing but beautiful people, sunshine, and good times. But alas good times do not always last as next comes a blast from the past so powerful it is still felt 8 years into the future! If all those images have been conjured up in the viewer's mind, then you have the basic plot to this foreign film 'Instructions Not Included'. But wait there is more I promise. Firstly, I would like to say that overall the film by all standards was not at all bad. When one thinks of a foreign film you might think of a really bad, poorly edited, or low funded film. With the major reason for it being foreign, the obvious reason being that it was not made in Hollywood. However, this movie takes all of the preconceptions about foreign films and turns it upside down. With a budget of nearly 5 million dollars (Instructions), and only being filmed in two locations in Mexico the movies overall quality is actually quite astounding. Furthermore, I would like to commend the directors and editors on doing Hollywood level job, creating and making the final product as it is better then something you might see in a low budget jaws knock off made here in the United States. Secondly I would like to write something of a quick summary so that the movie can be better understood. The movie begins as many do as of late with a man, or to be more specific a bachelor. Of course ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 2. The Postcolonial Theory Of Third Cinema One of the most popular and important film theory 's that it still around today is Third Cinema also known as the Postcolonial theory. Third cinema emerged in early 1960 through the 1970 's in Latin America and was seen as a militant tool leading to freedom and a revolution. Third cinema was not only about films rather it was about literature and artwork as well as political manifestos written by filmmakers. The whole idea behind third cinema is that it "refers to the colonized, neo–colonized, or decolonized nations and "minorities" of the world whose economic and political structures have been shaped and deformed within the colonial process" (Stam, 93). Third Cinema had emerged mainly from the Cuban Revolution during the 1950's but was influenced by different movements including Italian neorealism and direct cinema and different tools and techniques that the world had not been exposed to yet. Third cinema rejected the normal conventions of Hollywood as these films were being produced in second and third world countries. For these filmmakers, it was all about guerilla filmmaking, which meant that they would often be creating low budget films using a handheld camera with smaller film crews than usual. These films would often use montage as well as different combinations of sounds and images in order to get audiences to think about the film and what messages it was trying to relay. Since it was all about politics, these filmmakers were not aiming to get rich or gain fame ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 3. The Evolution of Digital Film In order for digital film to exist like it does today it had to evolve from something. Digital film evolved from Film or celluloid film as it is originally more recognized. I have a few questions that I wish to cover early on and continue to develop as time goes on. What is digital Cinema and what are the advantages and or disadvantages of it over film. What is film celluloid and where did it originate from ? Why did digital film start ? finally what is next for digital film is there more to come or will it transition to something else ?. Firstly celluloid film is a thin sheet of celluloid, created from nitrocellulose and camphor. Celluloid can be traced back to as far as 1856 to an English man called Alexander Parkes. Parkes has been found to be "the first person who was granted the first patent which described a plastic material which he called 'Parkesine' ". (1) However it wasn't actually Parkes that patented celluloid. John Wesley Hyatt an inventor and his brother Isaiah who actually patented their material as celluloid. So celluloid originated from New Jersey in the United States. Celluloid was actually created to become a replacement for the use of ivory in many products. However is made its way into film industry later on. This was primarily down to the work of John H. Stevens. "John H. Stevens was a chemist at the Celluloid Manufacturing Company" . (1) He discovered that a material know as amyl acetate was a "solvent for diluting celluloid" (1) This discovery ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 4. Horror In Stephen King's Why We Crave Horror Movies The first time I watched a horror movie, I was nine years old. While all of my cousins shrieked and closed their eyes, I felt totally engaged. Will we become more violent if we watch these movies? Will we become a gore–loving, emotionally insensitive society? What is it about scary movies that we love so much? It all comes back to the Human Condition. Facing our fears, establishing our sense of normalcy, and experiencing a weird sort of fun are all solid claims that Stephen King states in his essay "Why We Crave Horror Movies." Horror is an opportunity for us humans to face our fears. Reading Stephen King's short story "Strawberry Spring"is a perfect example that we use horror to "show that...we are not afraid" (King, "Why We Crave" 1). We go to prove ourselves as brave. In comparison, watching horror movies is alike "daring the nightmare" (King, "Why We Crave" 1). In this case, the "nightmare" is facing our fears, considering horror films are equivalent to going through a literal nightmare. To point out, the narrator in "Strawberry Spring" is "enchanted by that dark and mist–blown strawberry spring, and by the shadow of violent death that walked through it..." (King, "Strawberry Spring" 1). As a matter of fact, we are all enchanted by the darkness in the story just as the narrator is. Additionally, King describes this process as riding a roller coaster by reason of "a really good horror movie may... surprise a scream out of us... the way we may scream when the roller coaster ... • 5. Analysis Of The Film 'Maheshinte Driksathhikaram' After the most talked about film of Malayalam film industry in last year "Maheshinte Prathikaram" ("Mahesh's Revenge") director Dileesh Pothan and actor Fahadh Faasil comes together for "Thondimuthalum Driksakshiyum" (Roughly translated as "The Exhibit and the Witness"). Even though it's only the second film from Pothan, due to the immense fan following for his previous film which even generated a trend of finding minute details from that film and labeling it as Pothettan brilliance, there was much hype to live up to. By making the subject into a dark humor rather than the previous film which was more of a feel good film, Pothan was able to satisfy and surprise his fans. The film begins in a rural village near Alappuzha where chance encounters leads into a love affair between Prasad and Sreeja. Their inter–caste marriage prompts them to shift to Kasargod. On a bus journey Sreeja's gold chain is snatched by a man behind her while she fell asleep. As the chain is being snatched she comes out of the sleep only to find the man swallowing it. With the help of passengers and employees of the bus the thief is brought to the nearby Sheni police station, the man denying the theft all the while. The only witness to the theft is Sreeja who was half asleep. So the police decides to take the man into custody and wait for a day to find if the chain can be found in his shit. Just like in his previous film Pothan manages to make the locations into characters that are inevitable to the ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 6. Analysis Of Los Olvidados With a great reputation for its historical significance, 'Los olvidados' (1951), a film shot in Mexico City, directed by Luis BuГ±uel, endorsed the defining point of his profession. Having studied the given excerpt of the script from a scene of the film, this report will not only portray intriguing political, historical and social aspects, but also the phonological, morphological and lexical aspects and how they influence the given content. The geographical location of this film has also proven to be of relevant influence. BuГ±uel succeeded to attract the wider world's interest into his work as it was his intention to make everyone realise the truth. Ironically, BuГ±uel being a surrealist director, Los olvidados was not a surreal film. It was the first film directly addressing not only the issues identified with the Mexican society but also Mexican cinema itself. From here, the attributes of Mexican cinema were perpetually replaced. Content Analysis Los olvidados is based around the unfortunate events of streetboys whom gradually commit lawlessness and breach the law under the influence on Jaibo, their leader. The given excerpt of the script takes place in the beginning of the film, set in the Mexican slums. It is understood that Jaibo has escaped from reform school, spots the boys in the street and reveals his encounters of 'the inside' to them. Many themes are picked up upon throughout this scene, the most fundamental being: Child poverty, crime, machismo and more. Commencing one of the main noticeable themes is poverty, which can be seen towards the end of the given excerpt of the script. Child poverty is presented where Jaibo asks for a cigarette, which Cacarizo replies to with 'Ni cigarros, ni quinto, mano.'(Pountain: 209). It is inferred that the boys have essentially nothing which can be linked to the historical aspects of Mexico city may have influenced BuГ±uel's work. Due to the Partido Revolucionario Institucional (1927) creating an economy based on the political views of themselves and the more prestigious citizens of mexico, with only the rich getting wealthier, leaving the rest unprivileged and poverty–stricken. This also meant further widening the gap between the prosperous and the penniless of the ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 7. Why We Crave Horror Stephen King Analysis Stephen King said, "Monsters are real, and ghosts are real too. They're inside us, and sometimes, they win." This quote sums up the arguments made in the article "Why We Crave Horror" and what King believes. Stephen King makes three correct claims saying that humans crave horror to have a peculiar sort of fun, face our fears, and reestablish our feelings of normalcy. Humans use horror to have a peculiar type of fun. Knowing that this horrific event won't actually happen allows people to enjoy watching it. Stephen King says in his article, "Why We Crave Horror Movies", that "One critic has suggested that if pro football has become the voyeur's version of combat, then the horror film has become the modern version of public lynching"(2). ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Humans typically want to avoid the subject of death so when they read horror or other scenarios about people dying they face their fears of death. In "Strawberry Spring", by Stephen King, there was a college student who had "her throat cut from ear to ear"(1). While reading this humans our facing their fears on the subject of death. Having fears is part of the Human Condition and is completely normal. Even though these fears are normal, most people still try to face them and horror is a way to do that. The last claim that Stephen King makes is that humans crave horror to re–establish their feeling of normalcy. Humans are jealous of others and have insecurities about themselves which is a part of the Human Condition but horror gives them a opportunity to change these views. Compared to the narrator and the events of "Strawberry Spring," we "reestablish our feelings of essential normality" (King, "Why We Crave" 1). When readers of "Strawberry Spring" discover that the narrator had been the killer they are reassured that even their low points in life haven't been as bad as that. An example from Stephen King is "Freda Jackson as the horrible melting women in Die, Monster, Die!"(King, "Why We Crave" 1). He uses Freda Jackson as an example because when you compare yourself to her than you are "light years away from true ugliness"(King, "Why We Crave" 1). • 8. New Wave Cinema In David Cook's, "A History of Narrative Film," it is said that "the prevailing mode of postwar French cinema was literary adaption, which caused French films to become increasingly verbal and theatrical. It was against this tendency– identified as 'the tradition of quality' by Francois Truffaut and the other critics writing in Cashiers du Cinema, that the New Wave reacted in the late 1950's and 1960's." Astruc's notion was to break away from the tyranny of narrative in order to evolve a new form of audiovisual language" (Cook, 350). Astruc went on to describe how the problem of the cinema is how to express thought. As part of the New Wave, for The 400 Blows, the movie was not only shot on location, but natural lighting was used to give the movie a realistic film. • 9. Hindi Film And Masculinity : The Term Bollywood Emmett Burnton Macie Guard His 460 Final 11/11/14 Hindi Film and Masculinity The term Bollywood is relatively new title that congregates various types of films that stem from all around India and sadly get put into one single category, often times the films being underestimated by U.S. pop culture. The films' subject matter and themes have continued to evolve, as does the country of India, and the change is all seen reflecting from the films social and political themes and concerns. When the industry began the films plots spanned from all across the map, in order to compensate for language differences almost key terms were created which would set the staple for the themes and motives. These phrases or words were about lust and love, revenge or justice for wrong doings, good and bad as well as killing. With these themes people all across the nation were united, one way or another people related to the films that were being viewed. It was at this point and time that Hindi cinema became a voice for those who could not be heard in politics, but actions would be glorified or exaggerated to appease all status of the caste system. Throughout pivotal moments in history, new themes would be expressed throughout film. Different cultures have different concepts of masculinity. If one were to compare American films tropes and Hindi ones there would be some vast differences. For instance, the American action heroes tend to treat the damsel as an item, while in Hindi films the character ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 10. The Gold Rush Compare And Contrast Silent film has no recorded sound but can include background music and special effects. Since there was no way to record people talking, music was used instead. Music establishes setting, creates mood, atmosphere and may foreshadow. Charlie Chaplin is one of the most famous producers and directors of the silent film era. Not only did he write, he acted and scored movies too. In Charlie Chaplin's The Gold Rush (1925), the dance of the rolls in the official version was officially composed by Chaplin to help correlate with his actions by using an Orchestra. It was later recreated; however, it was composed using a piano. Although, people of that time period may argue that Chaplin's version is the best one and more effective because it is an original, the piano version is the best. There are many factors to look at when considering which one is better. The two versions are both great but the piano version is a better fit for the scene and the movie as a whole. The thing that does not make sense however is why Chaplin looks depressed while doing the dance. He does not even smile or anything. I am sure there is a double meaning. • 11. Cultural Revoluation in China One of the most significant changes occurred in the wake of the Cultural Revolution. During the revolution itself, China was virtually cut off from the rest of the world in a form of extreme "cultural protectionism" (Hong, 1998, p.2). There was a severe lack of cultural imports during the Cultural Revolution, regardless of whether they were industrial or cultural imports. However, under Deng Xiaoping's leadership, an era of reform began in China. The nation began to open itself up politically and economically, leading to widespread importation of foreign products during the 1980s. Some of the complexities of Chinese media start to emerge during this period, particularly in the interaction between global and local forces. The importation of Western goods is a combination of both internal and external factors. From a global or external standpoint, factors include the popularity of Western products, the rise of global trade, and worldwide technological development. On the other hand, internal factors deal more with changes in government intervention, new media policies, and shifts in the makeup of society itself (Hong, 1998, p.3). With the opening up of China in the 1980s, the country soon became one of the biggest buyers in the global television programming market. Massive importation soon led to imitation, as can be seen in the importation and imitation of telenovelas. In this case, it was specifically the impact of the global product being consumed in a local market that ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 14. Code Switching Of English In Bollywood Research Question 3 How English is used in Bollywood films ? 1.Code–switching with English in the Indian situation English in Bollywood frequently takes the form of code–switching. In a bilingual speech community, speakers tend to mix words, phrases, clauses and sentences when they communicate with others. They are able to switch linguistically built upon different situations. When two languages are expressed in this way, they differ remarkable from the same languages as spoken in their separate social systems. This kind of interference on the discourse level is known as code–switching (Malhotra, S. 1980). Since 1957, English was spoken by upper and middle social class in India for social and economic reasons and then it gradually became a symbol of higher social status. Next, it is because of the a variety of discourse–related functions of English which includes repeating, emphasizing, heightening contrast, creating surprise, making parenthetical remarks, teasing, challenging or reporting others' speech. • 15. The Art World Of The 1970 ' S Essay In the art world of the 1970's, Mary Kelly responded directly to the issues raised in Mulvey's article often making works that attempt to reclaim feminine identity. Most of Kelly's films are works of research and documentation that concern ideas of women's roles and women's work. In the early 1970s Kelly was involved in the making of the film Night Cleaners (1970–1975). The film explored contemporary issues of feminist activism in following a group of working–class female service labourers and feminist activists attempting to draw attention to their issues to build a union. The film utilises documentary style, simple mimesis and minimal editing to build a more direct connection between the subjects and the audience. Using the stories of real female cleaners and showcasing the most abject of the labours, such a toilet cleaning, Night Cleaners presented a 'warts and all' perspective on women's work. While working as crew on the film, Kelly's role as a feminist activist meant Kelly was also diegetically involved in the film. Kelly saw the 'radical potential' in the film medium and she utilised her work on Night Cleaners as a way to develop her artistic productivity in the realm of moving image. Expanding her feminist ideologies beyond specific concerns of women's manual labour, Kelly's later moving image work, Antepartum (1973), focused on the labour of motherhood. The clip provided with the essay explores the potential of transnational films with the context of films studied included in this subject. As seen in most third transnational films from Asia countries, "popular cultural products criss–cross cultural borders everyday" therefore these cultures remain circulating in transnational cinema (Aquilia 2006). The power of transnational cinema could not be ignored as global screen reflects a transnational cultural exchange (Aquilia 2006). In Y Tu Mama Tambien, there are many examples of the narrator describing the political and economic climates that Mexicans exist in and must deal with. Unlike the characters of Amelie, those in Y Tu Mama Tambien are realistic and complex, so much so that thefilm can be considered to be a character study. • 18. The Cyclical Teen Musical Film The Cyclical Teen Musical Film Considered by Jane Feuer to be "the only form of musical that retains widespread popularity" (123), the teen musical film is a cyclical sub–genre of the musical film that keeps coming back again and again since the 1960s, proving that it is a sub–genre here to stay. And since this is a cyclical sub–genre, its historical development is also cyclical in matter: it develops slightly throughout the cycle, as per many other film genres, but always seems to return back to its original narrative structure and conventions, even through the stylistic and sociocultural changes throughout the decades. Each time the teen musical film has come back into mainstream popularity, the films are always characterized by their dual–focus structure – primarily a male–female main character pairing – and the two thematic elements typical of youth films, as described by Timothy Shary: the growing up theme, and a conformity/rebellion binary. The only changes are caused by sociocultural means, including, but not limited to, the Rock n' Roll musicals of the 70's, the Punk musicals beginning in the late 70's, and the female–centered narratives of the 80s. Ever since the introduction of sound in the late 1920s and 1930s, the film musical has been a prominent genre. However, up until the end of the "Golden Age" of the film musical, the majority of these musical films produced were geared towards an adult audience to help raise morale during the depression, World War I, and ... Some examples of this include "Cell Block Tango" and "Razzle Dazzle" these numbers specifically show how sexy and edgy the movie can be. • 34. Italian Neorealism ( 1945-1953 ) Italian neorealism (1945–1953), through directors like Roberto Rossellini and Vittorio De Sica, made its trademark on cinematic history not only in Italy, but also throughout the world. It was films such as Rome Open City (Roma cittГ aperta, 1945), The Bicycle Thief (Ladri di biciclette, 1948), and Umberto D., (1952) whose style of depicting the harsh economic and social realities of the poor and working class of Italy took off as a new cinematic style after World War II. Neorealism is a response to desperate economic situations and often illustrates suffering, poverty, injustice, and/or discrimination. Many argue that neorealism is a way of seeing reality without prejudice due to the documentary–like technique of the film and its ability ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... In truth, it is a metaphor for a better tomorrow with the lingering theme of the hope and promise of children. This theme further emphasized in the final scene of Rome Open City with the children walking out of frame. With the city of Rome as the backdrop for this final scene, it offered a sense of renewed hope for the future. Rossellini balances this theme of renewed hope with trauma and tragedy, in particular the death of the main female character, Pina. The audience is first introduced to Pina as both a bride–to–be and mother–to–be. The "to–be" attached to mother and bride suggests that there is a future. However, Rossellini brings this "future" to a tragic end in the closing scenes of the film. As Pina pushes her way through the apartment complex courtyard, through a barricade of Nazi soldiers to run after her fiance Francesco who has been captured. As she is running through the streets, she is tragically shot down and dies in the middle of the street. Francesco manages to escape Nazi custody, making it a senseless and pointless death. Not only is this the tragic death of an Italian woman, but also a pregnant one. It has been said that Rossellini's style is a way of seeing. There is no other visual quite like the one Rossellini leaves the viewer with in the final scenes of this film. It is in this way that Rossellini is once again able to highlight characteristics of neorealism in his films. With Pina's death, the characteristic of revealing the ... • 35. Celebrities Have a Moral Responsibility to Be Good Role... Celebrities have a moral responsibility to be good role models for the society, would you agree? First of all by using the dictionary the main definitions can be broken down; the definition for a celebrity is 'a famous or well known person'. The definition of moral responsibility is 'the idea that a person has moral obligations in certain situations.' The definition of a good role model is 'a person whose behaviour, example, or success is or can be emulated by others, especially by younger people.' Our opinion as a group is that every human being has a moral responsibility towards society although celebrities tend to have the upper hand when it comes down to being 'good' role models. Our three arguments for this topic would be: First, ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Also there is Chris Gardner the inspiration for the movie 'Pursuit of Happiness'. Our third argument is 'Celebrities influence the youth of today'. The youth of today are much modernised, instead of reading books of history and relating to the heroes of yesterday, they tend to watch movies, TV shows and make the celebrities the hero of today. The main reason why the youth especially make celebrities their role models is because at one point of time in their life they want to become like those role models, they want to have same amount of fame, they want to be popular and loved amongst others like the role models. Some of them get inspired so much that they even want to look exactly like the role models. For example: Harman Badeja a fairly new Indian movie star got so Inspired by Hritik Roshan a superstar in Bollywood, that he has made his face and hair look exactly like him. Having stated all the above points, our counter argument is 'celebrities cannot always be considered as 'good' role models'. Some of the actions committed by the celebrities can be inappropriate and a very bad influence for the general population/audience. Henceforth why there is a censor board in place. The censor board is there to prevent celebrities showing or anything which can be classified as 'harmful' for the audience. They try their best to make celebrities pure in front of the audience, yet still some ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 36. A Beautiful Mind How has the feature film you have studied captured and sustained the viewers interest? Yes exactly and today in my seminar I will identify these key words to analyze and answer this question. In the film 'A Beautiful Mind', the director Ron Howard, along with writers, producers etc have used many techniques in order to capture the viewers interest and sustain it through out the film. I have identified the most important techniques used as: –how the actors are presented through characterization –various techniques of cinematography and special effects –and the fast pace of the film to make it exiting for the audience Most of us already knew that people suffering from schizophrenia do things a bit differently from the norm, ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... This helps capture the viewers interest as they grow a connection with these characters, and sustains the audiences attention as we learn more about them as the plot develops. Ron Howard has used cinematography and special effects to create impact as it engages the audience. It helps introduce an excellent main character and helps us experience the reality of the mental illness. We see most of the film through the Nash's point of view, helping us understand his situation and the reality of his delusions. Characters who are in Nash's hallucinations are always seen from his point of view through handheld camera shots. A good example of these point of view shots is the scene where Nash believes Parcher is going to hurt Alicia and his child so he lunges at her in an attempt to protect her. However we also see through Alicia's point of view that "John, there's nobody there" and Nash seems to be attacking her through a senseless act of violence. When we do not see the story through Nash's eyes we see him through views such as circling Steadicam shots like Nash's visit to the Pentagon. At first this type of shot arouses the exhilaration of the visit but later on we can relate it back to his schizophrenia. Lighting is also a technique commonly used by the director to set Nash apart from others. We often see Nash's face in the shadows symbolizing that he is troubled and different from a normal person socially, whereas cinematography has been used to light up

Analysis Of Blind Light Garnet Tyler 301344139 CA 130 – Fundamentals of Film Viewing Review – Blind Light The film Blind Light by Sarah Pucill is an experimental 16mm film that was presented as a part of the Cinematheque's "Studio DIM Cinema". This twenty–two minute film, made in 2007, consists of a series of long, slow shots of the sky from the interior of a studio loft. In these shots, the filmmaker gradually adjusts the exposure and zoom, affecting the brightness levels and perspective. Pucill also controls the shot by closing and opening the blinds on the windows being looked out of. Additionally, the audio on thefilm is largely absent with only a few short comments and outside noise sporadically throughout. This film creates a lonely and isolated atmosphere with it's use of durational shots, absence of action and bare setting. Narration is also used to further this effect. For example, after the long period of silence at the beginning of the film, the artist says in a calm voice "I can't look, so I'll shut it out". The nature of this phrase expresses a sense of defeat, which can be interpreted literally, in terms of the brightness of the light coming from outside as well as metaphorically, referring to a painful experience or difficult situation that might be easier to disregard than address. Following this statement, the second line is "I want to see the sun, to be blinded", which contradicts the former, though follows a similar theme, evident of a troubled mindset. The emphasis ...
