As you read the assignments for Task 1, it was clear that prior to revolutionary America educational
opportunities were mostly dependent on churches, or perhaps paid tutors, and it was only offered to
certain groups of people. In this instance, the government had to step in in order to create a more
educated citizenry for the growing democracy. It also was important for the federal government to
broaden the definition of public education for all to include the less fortunate (ex. freed slaves,
immigrants, African Americans during the civil rights movement, Title IX, children with
disabilities). Had the government not intervened, would that not have endangered the progress of the
country? Unfortunately, it's also important to look forward and realize that something must be done.
Local districts and state budgets are failing education and recent federal policy (specifically No

since we respond to those same features as children.." this kind of intuitive reaction is originated
from childhood and grows up with all the people, and it is supported by the data that in French
parliamentary election. People rate candidates only by their facial creatures and then 72% of the data
is corresponding to the actual election result, which is unbelievable for most people. Since the thin–
sliced judgment is part of instinct and it is hard for us to change it, it does not limit or stablize our

The Public History Project : Black Creek Pioneer Village
The public history project I undertook this semester was at Black Creek Pioneer Village. The project
consisted of researching the lives of youth and their families, and educators in nineteenth century.
This research included reading secondary sources to establish a base scholarly understanding of the
social history of the time period in question, and most importantly, how the social fabric of society
impacted children. The areas of social history that were of particular interest for this project
included: gender, class, attitudes towards education and its use in regards to moral and social
regulation, and the ideal parent. The project itself involved compiling a detailed list of archival
documents (letters from the Brown children and their friends and family, as well as from the
Department of Public Instruction) , and photographs (mainly portraits). This project contributes to
the fulfillment of Black Creek's new vision enhance the visitor experience by telling them the real
stories of those who lived during that time period. This research paper will focus on the education of
youth. Education, while not the top priority for children in the nineteenth century (a significant
difference to today's youth), still was vitally important in regards to shaping the experience of youth.

The Mad Gone Mad...or Just Gone The late nineteenth century saw a tide of immigrants entering the
American borders who were no longer considered an effective work force. Rather, these newcomers
were perceived as threats to the American population as they were considered responsible depleting
jobs, housing, and other resources. With the simultaneous rise of insane asylums, professionals
increasingly targeted mentally ill immigrants as scapegoats for larger social and economic problems.
This paper attempts to examine the manner in which professionals used the language of mental
illness to redefine immigrants as threats to national prosperity, thereby lending "scientific" support
to deportation policies that jeopardized both the place of immigrants in American society and,
unintentionally, the nation's economy. Public health officials were highly responsible for the
suggestion that the rise in immigrants was directly correlated to the increase in insanity in America.
In 1907, the Journal of the American Medical Association (JAMA) published an article in which the
unknown author begins by insisting that "furnish an undue proportion" of the insane in the American
population. The author's use of the word "undue" implies seem an injustice was done to the

From 1908–1960 it was "Belgian Congo", the world's first privately owned colony owned by King
Leopold II of Belgium. He made money from harvesting rubber. To do this he developed a system of
forced labor in which his army would take captive women and force men to harvest the rubber in the
rain forest. Many women hostages starved, the men were worked to death, there was no one in the
village to plant crops, or hunt or fish which led to famine, which in turn led to disease. Many people
were shot by soldiers during rebellions while others fled to avoid conscription and died in the rain
forests. Estimates are that this cut the Congo's population in half. After the Kings death, it became
Belgian Congo and the government realized this was not a sustainable system and if they were to

misunderstood. Growing up in rural southeastern North Carolina, I admit that I have a peculiar
accent, generally it is the first thing people notice about me. However, regional dialect does not

Statement of Purpose
I was born in a city with one of the nation's worst public school systems. The District of Columbia
Public School district has been under an education reform for the past decade and there has been a
lot of work to bring justice to the students there. That is where I started – and from there I still found
myself enrolled in low performing schools without a solid budget or plan. Regardless of the status of
my school and the budget it's district has created, I was able to graduate from high school and attend
a four–year university in one of the most ethically diverse cities in our country. This is the kind of
opportunity I want for all children that come from the city like me. I have been inspired by all of my
educators to pursue a career in teaching and I am motivated to create this opportunity for all students
in my classroom. I first became familiar with UCLA's Teacher Education Program in 2015 when I
heard about their partnership with LAUSD and the UCLA community school. I do not think I have
been more inspired to become an educator than when I heard about this new way of looking at
public education. Hearing the children's testimonials about the school and the doors it opened for
them really got me interested in social justice and creating better learning environments for students.

Historical Museum Commission, is perhaps one of the finest organizations for a graduate student to
spend their summer. With a myriad of learning opportunities available, each student is given the
ability to cultivate their knowledge through unanticipated avenues, creating a continually
stimulating workplace. My experience at the State Historic Preservation Office is significantly
advancing my future career due to the guidance and skills I receive, along with the professional

The idea of memory can relate to such examples photos, quotes, and how a landscape or town use to
appear can connect to the issue of oral history. The connection allows the historian to help those that
they are interviewing recall on their experiences. The connection between the two has caused me to
realize that primary accounts can be very subjective. About previous coursework, I learned that oral
histories should subjectively view these accounts as the recollection of an event by the individual
may have faded with age. The concepts of memory and oral history have been an active issue in my

Project in 1942 and that the Trinity Test took place in the June of 1945. The interview provides an
excellent example of how a primary source's account of an event can fade over time as the
laboratory at Los Alamos did not open until 1943, and the test at the Trinity site took place in July of
1945. Learning from the interview, I immediately connect this to my prior coursework bringing
photos of the Los Alamos area during the 1940s to my next oral history interview.

INTRODUCTION In this paper I will talking about the organization of Shine and its history and
about Public Health Association in New Zealand and also how they work as an organization here in
New Zealand. It is important because they both working in different ways like for Shine they help
thousands of adult and child victims of abuse, family violence and any kind of domestic abuse and
they also have training for professional to effectively intervene and give support to those victims of
abuse while on the other hand is the Public Health Association which is a voluntary association that
take the responsibility of promoting public health and regulate public policy. I will also discuss the 3
