Chinese Kingdoms Essay
Around 7,000 years ago, people were found living on the Korean Peninsula. Many tribes appeared
in the Liaoning region of Manchuria and northwestern Korea. Rulers ruled these tribes, the first
being Dangun, the founder of these tribes and would begin the Gojoseon dynasty. Town states
became tribal leagues and eventually became kingdoms. Three kingdoms were in existence at the
time. The first kingdom was called Goguryeo (37 B.C. – AD 668) and was located central to the
Yalu River. Goguryeo was able to obtain large amounts of land from Manchuria and the Korean
peninsula thanks to Gwanggaeto the Great and King Jangsu. The second kingdom was Baekje (18
B.C. – AD 660) and was south of present day Seoul. Silla (57 B.C. – AD 935) was located in the

Silla's society was built on Buddhists practices due to being the farthest from China and its
influences. They developed a military of warriors called Hwarang. An alliance with the Tang
Dynasty of China century Silla was able to conquer Goguryeo and Baekje in 668. During the mid 8–
th century Silla was able to become a powerful nation and tried to make the nation a Buddhist
country. In 698, refugees from Goguryeo established the Kingdom of Balhae in south–central
Manchuria. Balhae created a government system modeled after the Goguryeo kingdom including its
culture. Many Balhae were Goguryeo nobility and founded the Goryeo dynasty. The Goryeo
Dynasty (918–1392) was founded by Wang Geon, a general who had served under Gungye, a rebel
prince of the Silla Kingdom. His goal was to reclaim lost territory in the Goguryeo kingdom. The
name Korea came from the Goryeo dynasty. Wang Geon was unable to reclaim lost territory, but he
did have a sophisticated culture with Buddhist traditions. In 1392, General Yi Seong–gye overthrew
Goryeo and established a new dynasty called Joseon. They were able to replace Buddhist traditions
to Confucian ideas. Rulers in the Joseon Dynast came up with a well

How Did Imperialism Affect American Colonialism
This historical study will define the impact of American/European colonialism and the "Unequal
Treaty" era in the open trade policies between China, Korea, and japan during the mid–19th century.
The important primary documents of the Treaty of Nanking define a pivotal movement in which
international trade routes through Chinese Hongs made it possible to expand open trade with Japan
and Korea in the 1850s and 1860s. Colonialism acted a catalyst to break down the "closed door"
policies of the Korean and Japanese governments, which had often colluded with the Chinese to
restrict American and European trade agreements. In some cases, American colonialism certainly
made trade less advantageous for the Chinese, Koreans, and the Japanese, but it also brought a more
international cooperation between these Asian nations after the Treaty of Nanking was enacted.
More so, the Treaty of Amity and Commerce of 1858 between the U.S. and japan also open doors
with Korea and China, which reflect a far more open door policy to the advantages of global trade
during this time. In essence, an analysis of the important improvements of open trade between
China,. Japan, and Korea will be defined within the parameters colonial interventionist policies by
the British and United States in the mid–19th century. The importance of open trade is usually
defined by the greater or lesser levels of international cooperation between different regions of the
world. In China, the continual struggle for

Pre Modern East Asia Essay
Scholars such as John K. Fairback and David Kang have argued that the theory of the tribute system
can explain most of pre–modern East Asian history. However, there was an interesting period of
pre–modern East Asian history that cannot be fully explained by the tribute system. This was the
Imjin War of 1592–1598, also known as the greatest international conflict in pre–modern East Asia.
If pre–modern East Asian countries were tributaries under the hegemon that is China, they would
not rebel against their hegemon. As Japan rebelled by attempting to conquer China through Korea,
the tribute system cannot explain the Imjin War.
This essay will use an alternate theory, a theory of self–interest, to discuss the international relations
of Japan, Korea, and China during the Imjin War (1592–1598). During the Imjin War, each nation
acted out of its own self–interest rather than as a result of diplomatic hierarchy. In this alternate
theory, the self–interest of each nation stems from the hierarchy within the nations themselves.
Because there was no democracy in East Asia in the late sixteenth century, each nation had a ruler
who had consolidated central power. Also, because Confucian nations greatly valued prestige,

Chinese military leaders protected the self–interest of Ming China by using Korean soldiers as
buffers in battle. If Ming China waged battle with Japan on their own, they would have suffered
many more casualties. However, by using the Korean soldiers already stationed in Korea and
already fighting in the war, China was able to reduce the loss of Chinese life (Hur (2015), p.244).
The actions taken by Ming China and Chinese leadership during the Imjin War can also be
explained by the self–interest theory, as they were looking to preserve the lives of their own people
without regard for the lives of their foreign tributary

Marco Polo's Influence On The World
"I have not told half of what I saw" were the final words of the great Venetian explorer Marco Polo;
however, in recent times, Marco Polo's exploits have been doubted more and more. (Pedriali, 161)
Most often cited as evidence that Marco Polo's travels may not have been as truthful as reported is
the 1998 book Did Marco Polo go to china? by Dr. Frances Wood. Through new research done by
Dr. Hans Ulrich Vogel of University of Tübingen in Germany, it has been shown that Marco Polo
was mostly truthful in his memoirs, but it has also proven that some things were exaggerated thanks
to his ghostwriter Rustichello da Pisa, Marco Polo himself, or later copyists.
Marco Polo was a 13th century Venetian merchant explorer who is said to have traveled with his
father and uncle to the Far East lands of China, Mongolia, India, and others. During this time the
Mongols, known as the Golden Horde, were in control of much of Asia. Although this power was
beginning to dissolve by the time the Polos' set off on this journey, it was seen clearly that the
Mongols still held power in the region. The Mongol leader, Khubilai Kahn, was a glistening
example of this power (Jackson, 1998). Polo is said to have served under him as an envoy for a time
before his return to Venice. While in Venice, after being captured by the Genoese during a small
conflict between the Genoese and the Venetians, Polo and his Ghostwriter, Rustichello da Pisa,
wrote his memoirs, The Travels of Marco Polo. This manuscript is a

Catholic Koreans in Choson Korea Essay
At the time that Catholicism by a Jesuit brand was initially introduced into Chosŏn Korea, the
central government's policy towards the foreign religion had been tied to factional politics
(Rausch, p.47). If the governing regional authority or dominant political faction felt sympathetic or
indifferent toward the western religion and its converts, its followers were pretty much left alone.
Though there were some minor persecutions before the beginning of the 19th Century; after the
authorities in the Neo–Confucian hegemony caught an individual Christian on the skipping of rituals
and rites, it was not commonplace as it was for the next hundred years. Under the reign of King
Sunjo however, Chosŏn Korean authorities went on the attack, ... Show more content on

The destructive Ulhae Persecution of 1815 took the lives of hundreds of Catholics before its rage
was finally spent. Chosŏn Korea's central government made another attempt to suppress Catholicism
in the Chonghae Persecution of 1827. The campaign was a lot less deadly than the Ulhae
Persecution though. Though there were many hundreds of Catholics killed at this time, there is only
information on about eight prior to the start of the 1801 persecution and the following persecutions
(Rausch, p. 46). Chosŏn Korea's central government seemed to resume as it had before despite the
changing of power of political factions in Seoul. Clans at this time were battling with one another
for authority in the royal court, and a country was in rebellion. After King Sunjo's death in 1834,
grandson of the King Sunjo, King Hongjong was chosen to be the next monarch. The powerful in–
law ancestry of the Queen Dowager (The kings removed grandmother) established her family's
position by marrying a woman of the Pungyang Cho clan to the young King Hongjong (Rausch,
p.47). Queen Dowager was influential on the young mans decisions, as she acted as his regent. She,
along with the growing climate among the Chosŏn elites had encouraged the stricter bands that were
being put on the converts heads. This no doubt influenced the new Kings decisions, being only eight

The Founding Of Choson From The Korean Peninsula
In 1392 when Choson replaced Koryo from the Korean peninsula, many differences occurred. Since
Choson was successor of Koryo, Koryo could have been seen similar to its predecessor in a certain
extent, but Choson was a whole new country. Foreign relations, military, society, and religion had all
changed especially the religion. The founding of Choson can be interpreted as a religious revolution
because reform–minded Confucian scholars wanted to a change.
In Late Koryo, Buddhism had corrupted so much that even one of their own members wrote to fix a
decadence in their religion. Confucians scholars blamed the Buddhists' mismanagement to justify
their action of building a new dynasty . The shift of a state from Buddhism to Neo–Confucianism
with the transition from Koryo to Choson is well–known, but it needs to be broken down into pieces
to observe the changes that occurred. Religious status of late Koryo, religious status of Choson, and
impact of changes politically and socially must be carefully observed and will be described in more
detail below.
Religious Status of Late Koryo
Buddhism was first introduced to Korean peninsula during the Three Kingdoms period by the
foreign monks. By the time of Late Silla, Buddhism had become integral part of the culture and was
a state religion of Koryo. Due to people of Koryo choosing to endow temples in concern of
operations of the temples, Buddhist establishment obtained large landholdings and an accumulated
wealth.

The achievements of Great King Sejong
King Sejong the 4th king of Joseon Dynasty is well known to Koreans and in there history. He is
well known not only because he was good ruler but also the fact that he had accomplished so much
achievements that helped the nation to be successful even today. In today's society he is titled Great
King Sejong or King Sejong the Great, for acknowledgement of his great accomplishments which
led to golden age of the early Joseon Dynasty. To many people in the world he is most notable for
creation of Hangul, or Korean phonetic alphabet, however he has accomplished more than just that.
His accomplishments include successful systems for the talented intellectuals, improvement in
science, and creation of Hangul.
To improve his government and make his country prosperous, King Sejong created numerous
adjustments and creations of systems that helped the talented intellectuals. First thing he did to
change some systems in the government was the creation of "Chiphyonjon or the Jade Hall of
Scholars in his palace."1 This was the "unified single center of highest learning," he created such
facility in belief that a great nation needs wide range of knowledge to improve the lives of the
citizens.1 Those talented and intelligent scholars, whom were appointed to the Jade Hall of Scholars,
were appointed as "full–time masters of art to devote their energy of learning."2 These scholars

Coming Of Age Ceremony Essay
Every year on the third Monday in May, Korea celebrates the coming–of–age ceremony for young
men and women turning 19 in that year. Aside from the ceremonies in different parts of the country,
there is also an award ceremony to laud exemplary young adults. The usual gifts for this day are
popularly given as a bouquet of red roses and, if lucky, a first kiss. Champagne and perfume are
other two options with high–tech gadgets being the latest addition these days.
Despite the western appearance however, the coming of age ceremony has its own tradition dating
as far as the Goryeo Dynasty (918–1392). The first written record of Korea's coming of age
ceremony is found in 965, during King Gwangjong's reign (925–975). It was written at the time that

Their coming of age ceremony would take place in the year they turned 15 and they would be taught
the virtues of a woman. They too would visit ancestral shrines to inform the heaven of their
maturity. The ritual would be called a 'gyerye.'
The coming of age ritual was a prerequisite for both men and women to get married.
As recently as the mid–1950s it was quite common to see traditional coming of age rites held in
towns and villages with the attendance of the elderly. By the latter half of the 20th century however,
the influx of western culture and its manner of enjoying the rite of passage into adulthood came to
replace traditional rites more and more.
In 1999, the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism, in order to resurrect the tradition, came up
with standardized coming of age rites to be practiced in schools and towns. The purpose was to
remind young people of the pride and dignity of traditional culture and teach the true meaning of

I went to The Face Shop located inside of H–mart in Niles for my cultural observation project. I do
not shop at H–mart frequently because it is too far from where I live. However, whenever I do shop

outside, the establishment resembles a typical Korean cosmetic retail store. Bright, soft lightings,
special sale items by the storefront, shelves on the walls displaying neatly stocked skin care items,
makeup stations with a wide selection of colorful makeup products, posters of beautiful Korean
celebrities, and young women employees. During my observation, I saw some interesting things that

I would attempt to answer why does Korean cosmetics industry look and operate differently from
the Western cosmetics industry.
Result Analysis History of Korean cosmetics dates back to the era of three kingdoms Silla,
Goguryeo, and Baekje (BC 37–668), and after the unification of the three kingdoms, Goryeo (918–
1392) was established. It is suggested that Goryeo was the first country in Korean history to
popularized use of makeup as well as the development of application techniques (Yoon, 2017).
Improved skills learned from China to manufacture mirrors increased the popularity of makeup
culture during Goryeo era (Yoon, 2017). Colorful and exotic makeup trend of Goryeo influenced by
Buddhism changed as Joseon dynasty (1392–1910) emerged. Joseon revered simpler makeup
culture where inner beauty was more important than outer beauty, an ideology reflected from
Confucianism (Yoon, 2017). Natural looking makeup culture of Joseon paved the path of a new kind
of makeup culture, skin care. It is no surprise that Korean people continue to cherish the skin care
regiments today as women of Joseon did hundreds of years ago. When we look into the evolution of
Korean cosmetics, it is inevitable that changes occur with cultural and economic shifts and it will
continue to reshape and reinvent, as cultural perspective would change. Korean cosmetics came a
long way from the ancient cosmetic goods that were made with simple, locally available

Yukio Lippits Water-Moon Avalokitesvara
In Yukio Lippits' article, he begins by depicting the typical Goryeo Korean Buddhist art during this
time–period. Primarily identified through hanging scrolls, this art is conveyed and studied through
"Pure Land subjects" and the work of "Water–Moon Avalokitesvara." The framework that allowed
for such a strength in artwork came from "the Goryeo court and its surrounding landscape of
Buddhist institutions [that] served as a rich matrix for the production of Buddhist icons and ritual
implements." In time, the Goryeo Buddhist art would soon become part of the Japanese archipelago
history. Aside from the visual maritime economic trade of such artwork as a form of political
authority and stability, four main factors attributed a shift in geographical centers: Mongol
incursion; Japanese pirates; Hideyoshis' invasions; and religious suppression during the Joseon
dynasty. Until recently, Goryeo art became ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

Disadvantages Of Political Dynasty
Political dynasty is a well known method of politicians in the Philippines wherein the members of

The Book of Songs
The Warring States period was a time of inner turmoil and widespread chaos in China, in which
independent rebel warlords seized land and power in the absence of a centralized authority. There
existed a desperate need for a solution to effectively stop the interregional conflicts and establish
order in China, and in pursuit of that goal arose the Hundred Schools of Thought. The three primary
schools that were conceived during this ideological flourishing were Confucianism, Taoism, and
Legalism. The principal tenets of Confucianism were illustrated in the Four Books (Great Learning,
Doctrine of the Mean, Analects, and Mencius), classic texts that were selected by the scholar Zhuxi

basically one of the core values of Confucianism. The Book of Songs was not only extensively
studied by nobles who wanted to succeed in the civil service examinations and be assigned an
government position, but was also revered by the common people for its manifestation of Confucian

way to the teachings of Confucius, therefore it also appealed to a broad spectrum of individuals,
including the most noble of the royalty and the poorest of the farmers. Perhaps the best

What Is The Relationship Between Interaction And Identity
This section contains only a summary of "Chapter 7 on The Kinship, Interaction and Identity" from
the book "The Baba of Melaka: Culture Identity of a Chinese Peranakan community in Malaysia"
written by Tan Chee Beng which was published in 1988. The author's main purpose for writing this
chapter is to identify in what ways is the Peranakan Chinese kinship system built based on the
concept of social interaction between Baba and the non–Baba Chinese as well as other ethnic
groups, especially amongst the Malays and the experience of interaction with others (Chee Beng,
1988, p. 198).
Within this chapter, the author suggested that the nature of intra ethnic and interethnic interaction
built its self identification. Baba in Bukit Rambai closely interact among themselves as they
encounter each other on a daily basis to play a card game called ceki (p. 198). Within the category
"Baba", individuals are related to each other not just because of friendship, as is true of interethnic
interaction, but they are also related through kinship ties. Kinship is a significant institution
principle for intragroup interaction and in forming alliances. Among the Baba, social exchanges

The Silver Trade : The World 's First True Global Trade...
Before gold was considered the most precious metal, silver was the most sought after good. The
silver trade was the first global trade network and it dominated for thousands of years.Unlike the
trade during the southernization time period, the silver trade included the newly discovered
Americas. The main silver trade occurred between Asia and Europe with silver coming from all over
the world. The Silver trade had both positive and negative impacts on the areas involved; the large
quantities of Silver all over the world caused inflation in many places, including Spain and other
parts of Europe, while other areas, such as china, became rich.
The great silver trade is considered to be the world 's first true global trade system. This trade had
many positive benefits on those who participated in it. The people who benefited the most from this
trade was the chinese (doc. 2, 4, and 8). The Spanish scholar Tomas Mercado wrote that "silver
currency flowed out [of Spain] [...] in Chinese ships coming to get silver for China" (Doc. 2). The
silver of the silver trade didn't come from China however that's where most of it ended up (doc. 2, 4,
OD 1). Ralph Fitch, a British merchant, stated that the portuguese "have a ship that goes to Japan
every year and brings back more than 600,000 coins' worth of Japanese silver. The Portuguese use
this Japanese silver to their great advantage in China" (doc. 4). In "Maritime Silk Road" by Li

being touched by a man other than her husband.
Yangban or the ruling class seemed to be following the Confucian codes of conduct more closely
than other classes. Yangban families were usually landowners; therefore yangban women would not
usually be engaged in any work outside of home. However, new Neo–Confucian ideology
demanded that women stay confined at home, abiding by the adage 'men outside, women inside'.
Seclusion of female line to women's chambers, referred to as anpang, enunciated further deepening

The yangban status was fundamentally family–oriented and the main purpose of a wife in family

three obediences were required from a virtuous woman: to her father as a daughter, to her husband

Tea Culture In China, Japan And Korea
Introduction
Tea is a common drink nowadays and is very popular in different countries and even countries in
Europe. However, every country has a different tea culture which has its origins.
The history of tea culture varies and every culture would like to promote a different spirit or attitude.
Besides, different tea culture use different types of tea leaves and utensils to represent itself.
China, Japan and Korea are neighbors geographically and they all have tea culture. In the following,
it is going to compare the tea culture of China, Japan and Korea in history, culture and utensils.
The history of tea and variety
Chinese Tea Ceremony was called Chadao and started from Tang Dynasty at 841 AD year. Tea is
one of the seven basic daily necessities, also is an indispensable thing for Chinese. Tea tree was first

Differences Between Confucianism And Confucianism
All of these different systems and philosophies highly emphasize: the harmony between people, the
benevolence that one must have, filial piety, loyalty, righteousness, and courtesy for a successful and
healthy society. Even though they all have a different idea, their goal is the same. The morality and
ethics of human behaviors were also part of the teachings that shaped the culture of today. Even
though the goals of these philosophies were similar, like their beliefs about man and society; their
ideas were a little bit different and each had their own focus. The difference in focus between
Confucianism and Taoism is that Confucianism was focused on having a structured society. It held
as a principle the brotherhood of humanity. The ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The Tao is the unknown, powerful force to which the whole world and universe flows. It is the
ultimate reality and that everything is one despite the differences in appearances. They believed that
life is good, there was an emphasis on the body, and the goal was to gain balance in life. They had a
good view on women. They were generally equal to men and highly spoken of in the teachings.
Taoism believes in the concept of the Yin and the Yang. This concept is that two halves, two
opposites, make a whole. It is a balance, equilibrium of wholeness. The Yin is the dark side, while
the Yang is the light side. We can see this balance every day in life. Like the day and the night, a
man and a woman. There cannot be one without the other. Absence of light creates darkness;
absence of heat makes it cold. When there are beautiful things, the ugly ones come out. And when
there is good, there is also bad. One thing defines and complements the other. They coexist by
opposing each other. Yet, nothing is completely Yang and nothing is completely Yin. One is the
starting point of the other. They are interdependent to be complete. When one increases, the other
one decreases. This is how they maintain the overall balance.
Mohism, on the other hand, was rival to Confucianism and Daoism. He was too liberal to agree to
all the social rules that Confucius had created. He did not agree either with the importance of
tradition or rituals of Confucianism.

Chinese Essay Exam for Civil Service
The Chinese essay exams for civil service selections were known as the Imperial examinations,
which were instituted by Imperial Chinese to determine who among the population would be
allowed to enter the state's bureaucracy. The Imperial Examination System in China lasted from the
founding during the Sui Dynasty in 605 to its demise near the end of the Qing Dynasty in 1905.
These examinations lasted approximately 1300 years (Elman, 2002).

countered tendencies toward regional autonomy and the breakup of the centralized system. The
examination system distributed its prizes according to provincial and prefectural quotas, which
meant that imperial officials were recruited from the whole country, in numbers roughly
proportional to each province's population. Elite individuals all over China, even in the
disadvantaged peripheral regions, had a chance at succeeding in the examinations and achieving the
rewards of holding office.
The examination system also served to maintain cultural unity and consensus on basic values. The
uniformity of the content of the examinations meant that the local elites and ambitious would–be
members of those elites across the whole of China were taught with the same values. Even though
only a small fraction (about 5 percent) of those who attempted the examinations passed and received
titles. Those who failed to pass–most of the candidates at any single examination–did not lose
wealth or local social standing; as dedicated believers in Confucian orthodoxy, they served, without
the benefit of state appointments, as teachers and managers of local projects, such as

Why was Cleopatra Famous? Known for her love affairs with some of Rome's most famous leaders,

an interest in Marc Antony and how he carried himself. She was deeply intrigued by all he had to
offer. After getting more involved and progressing in his relationship with Cleopatra he marries her.
The two ended up having a set of twins. Cleopatra gave birth to a boy and a girl named Alexander
Helios and Cleopatra Selene and then later on she bore another child to Marc Antony. His name was
Ptolemy Philadelphus.
Overtime Marc Antony begins to basically dessert his duties. This causes uproar amongst the citizens
of Rome. Not only does the citizens look down on Marc Antony's behavior, but Octavian did not
condone it either. Marc Antony made an unforgettable mistake of dividing the land amongst his
family he had with Cleopatra. At the time he may not have thought much of it. Marc probably
viewed it as a celebration, but it would end in destruction. He was giving out Rome's land to
Egyptian children. This further angered Octavian and he set out to make it right, or at least right in
his eyes.

Samurai, Yangban, and Gentry: Dealing with the Problem of...
The samurai of Tokugawa Japan, the yangban of Choson Korea, and the gentry of Ming China were
three very powerful and elite groups of East Asia. These groups consisted of high ranking
government officials with judicial power and influence. Although the groups were located in the
same region they had their similarities and differences in how they obtained power and how they
used their power. Japanese samurai were military nobility who had almost as much power as the
emperor, but were not the highest ranking officials whereas the yangban officials of Korea were the
highest ranking rulers. The gentry of the Ming period of China were once high ranking rulers;

Ancestry also played a major role in generations of gentry because those born into wealthy families
were more likely to become gentry than those who were born into poor families. The gentry, like the
yangban, were also wealthy landowners who owned slaves. Gentry were also retired officials who
held high ranking office positions. In contrast, the samurai got their power mostly from the Taiho
Code which involved a yearly census and the division of bureaucrats into separate divisions. The
yangban were also separated into civilian officials and military officials. The major difference that
separated the samurai from the yangban and the gentry was the samurai's involvement with the
military. They were hired as protectors for important government officials and the Japanese military
was mostly made up of samurai. That aside, the ultimate source of power of all three elite groups
was hereditary and ancestral lineage. The social role of the samurai was laid out in the Joei Code.
The samurai looked after matter of the shogunate's vassals and supervised military and police issues.
The Joei Code was the first codification of warrior law and it defined the jobs of the stewards as

Relations Between Iran And The Middle East
Oil. This one word can explain the relationship between the western world–especially the United
States–and the Middle East. It can be used to trace the reasoning behind many interactions between
these two spheres of the world. It is also the basis of one of the most controversial foreign policy
operations of the United States, Operation Ajax. Although Operation Ajax happened sixty years ago,
its consequences had immediate and lasting effects on both Iran and American–Iranian relations. I
will argue that the coup led to the 1979 Islamic revolution and consequently put into motion the
strained relations between Iran and the United States; it also had significant effects on both the
United States' and Iran's political history. I will cement my argument by giving a detailed account of
Operation Ajax and the players involved in it as well as giving descriptive examples of why it
happened as well as how it continues to have a lasting effect.
"The United States has no credibility as a bearer of democracy to Iran because of its role in crushing
democracy there half a century ago" (Kinzer xvii). This was said by Akbar Ganji an Iranian
dissident who precisely struck a significant point of American–Iranian relations. That one sentence
explains exactly what happened during Operation Ajax–Iran's first democracy was destroyed in an
attempt to protect self–interested parties of the western world. Operation Ajax was a coup organized

What Is The Example Of Nepotism
In Philippine politics, the ultimate goal is to have professional officials in the government so that the
country will be ruled properly and be successful. For this to be achieved, officials who are in high
positions should give power to those who are responsible enough and can prove that they are worthy
of their given position. But in reality, this ideal image is somehow violated because of nepotism.
"Nepotism is defined as favoritism shown by somebody in power to relatives and friends, especially
in appointing them to good positions." Regardless of the capability and capacity to work in the
workplace, officials preferably appoints or promotes their relatives in good positions instead of

Political dynasty is evident when a person runs for an elective office who has an incumbent elective
official occupying a position in the government (Pamaos, 2012). Political dynasty in the Philippines
is very prominent due to the numerous lines of families governing a specific area. Filipinos are
known for their close relationship with their families. Such is the familial love in Philippine society
that some clans have made politics their family's line of work (Santos, 2010). From the Aquinos, the

They documented the historic and geographic patterns in the evolution and profile of political
dynasties. According to Mosca, even when political positions are open to all, a family tie to those
already in power would confer various advantages. They conducted the research by creating two
indicator variables to characterize political dynasties. The first one is called Postrelatives which is
equal to a legislator who has a relative entering congress after he did. And the second one is called
Prerelative which is equal to a legislator who had a relative entering congress before he did. The
results showed that the prerelative legislator had the chance to occupy a position in the congress
compared to the postrelative legislator. This indicates that the more relatives that entered in the
congress before the candidate running for a position, the more likely he will succeed compared to
the other legislator who has no relatives inside the congress. An implication is that the political class
is partly shaped by the luck of previous politicians, and that holding political power reinforces the
effects of other potential sources of elite persistence such as differing dynastic traits (Bó, Bó, &

Advantages Of Political Dynasty In The Philippines
An Argumentative Essay About a Phillipine or Local Issue
Topic: Political Dynasty
Despite not being an economically rich state, Philippines is known for having people who deeply
value their family members. Family–oriented Filipinos give importance to even to their most distant
relatives as long as they have the same blood running through their veins. In this practice also,
Filipinos tend to seek advices from the elders of the family before making a huge decision. Thus,
decisions are made not by one for himself but by a group for the entirety of the family. (Agoncillo,
2012, p.6)

This statement did not just come from us but from the research and survey we have conducted.
Political dynasty has already been long present in the political structure of the Philippines. It can be
manifested when a family member runs, and most often than not, wins the election and his position
is soon succeeded by one of his family members as well. This cycle goes on and on and the scope of
the family's territory becomes wider and wider every election for the members can run on different
places. This is often practiced by rich and influential families; families who have been political since
their forefathers and have followed the tradition as well.
Political dynasties started to emerge just after the Philippine Revolution happened. It was also when
the First Republic of the Philippines was established. The Philippine Revolution was the fight
between the people of the Philippines and the Spanish colonizers. According to the book The
Making of a Filipino which is written by Renato Constantino, political dynasty was believed to be
first recorded way back in the pre–Magellanic period where the rulers where the datu, raja, and

Difference Between Sejong The Great And Kamehameha
Kamehameha and Sejong the Great King Kamehameha was the first ruler of the Hawaiian Islands.
His reign was from July, 1782 to May 8 or 14, 1819 (Chosonkorea.org). Sejong Daewang was the
king of the Joseon–dynasty Korea (now known either as North and South Korea) and his reign was
from 1418 to 1450 (Chosonkorea.org). The two leaders ruled their land in many similar and
different ways. Their behavior while ruling was also similar, yet different in many ways as well.
Sejong's pathway to becoming a ruler was much simpler than Kamehameha's. Sejong was not
supposed to be the ruler of the Joseon Dynasty. He easily and simply became king (Thoughtco.com).
Kamehameha's route, on the other hand, was rife with war, blood, and hardships. Kamehameha had
to take parts in many wars and strategizing in order to become the ruler of the Hawaiian Islands.
Kamehameha the Great is most known for unifying all the Hawaiian Islands together and Sejong the
Great is most known for creating the Korean language (Hangul). Both rulers are still known as
leaders who impacted their land and their people. Kamehameha the Great and Sejong the Great were
two very effective leaders.
Similarly, both Kamehameha and Sejong were both very studious. Kamehameha was trained to be a
very skilled warrior and ruler. He and his society was advanced in trading, growing crops, and more
(Potter, Kasdon, and Rayson 23). Sejong was always reading and created many inventions during
his reign (Newworldencyclopedia.org). Both

Music and Cultural Identity
Some may say music is just music; a song is just a song. However, music plays an enormous role in
our psychology, because a single song has the ability to bring about many kinds of thoughts and
emotions in the listener. Music is subtly one of the main factors in which people identify with
certain groups and establish their belonging in society. It shapes people's perspectives on how the
world functions and the roles they play within it. Music can function the same way in a culture; it
can reflect many of the culture's values and ideologies. Music can have many effects on culture and

Music can also be a differentiating factor for social and economic classes. In lecture twelve (Roma

influenced this separation. The types of instruments used, or lack of, tell of the people's standing in
the social and economic ladders. For instance, romungre music is professional, urban, and was

the violin, while the other members played other various instruments such as the cimbalom and

the sounds produced by these instruments also suggest a level of sophistication and class. The song

Admiral Yi's Impact On East Asian History

The Imjin Wars themselves drummed up nationalism in both Korea and Japan2. However for Korea
in particular Yi was a potent symbol (Yi Sun–shin 1998). One reason for his importance is that
during his life he was not treated well by the Choson government. After fighting off the first
Japanese invasion Yi was arrested and demoted to the lowest level in the military. Even after his
humiliation and demotion at the hands of the government that he had saved he served devotedly in
his station (Yi Sun–shin 1998). Perhaps this was due to his confucian ethic or maybe it was due to
his personal nationalism and loyalty to the Korean state "Since that response was also redolent of
Korean patriarchy and a host of prevailing social values as well as martial spirit and actually
succeeded in driving off the invader, it was to earn him even greater accolades as a savior of his
nation" (Gilbert, 2017). Yi's status has also caused an annual festival to be held at the headquarters
of the Korean navy to commemorate admiral Yi's accomplishments and to celebrate the blossoming
of the cherry trees (Gilbert, 2017). Admiral Yi also has a national shrine that is 342,112 square

Seoul (Gilbert, 2017). Based on his presence today it is clear to see that Yi had a lasting impact on

As rational human beings, they are already close to the idea that a new political candidate– running
for any government position– who is not from a political clan or who's family names do not
possesspower–– will not be able to give them the kind reassurance that they will be able to execute
the type of leadership that we want– the voters think that this can only be realized and only be done
by someone from a political name. Since having the power and title for the name is one of the
factors for the citizen's choice of voting a person – and in this area only the political clan can give
out "proof" as to what they are able to offer to the people. As you look at it in other persons
perspective you might give the fault and pin point it to the voters for placing those same people in
office as irrational, but you cannot fully blame them since they are actually being rational in their
choices by placing those people in power in which they can get most of benefit from. And these

power is only vested upon this people the politics is not totally close only to these clans, at some

Art And Visual Culture : The Joseon Dynasty
The Joseon Dynasty was declared by Yi Seonggye, best known as King Taejo, in the late fourteenth
century. King Taejo 's foundation for the new empire was based on the rejection of the Goryeo
Dynasty, the state religion of Buddhism, and his desire for a Neo–Confucianist society. The new
standards of Neo–Confucianism significantly affected the art and visual culture produced during this
period of Korean history. During the Joseon period, paintings were considered a form of visual
enlightenment for the Korean people. Painting, calligraphy, playing music, and playing the game
paduk were regarded as the "Four Accomplishments that were expected of a learned man." The
understanding and skill of painting is also said "to be necessary for cultural and intellectual
refinement." As a result, the Korean government created academies for men of jungin status to
become poets and painters. Many Korean artists were greatly inspired by the ink paintings of
Chinese literati artists and masters. The three most interesting topics in Korean painting are
landscape, genre, and portraiture due to their progressions in style over time, as well as the variation
in techniques that artists used. Significant examples of Korean landscape painting include An Gyeon

harvesting of young fish and shellfish is never allowed (Cataneo, 2017). Diving was a job for Jeju
men, but it changed during the 17th century when the Korean King at that time recruited numbers of
them in the army and since abalones still had to be sent to the King, the women were forced into

the one who established Northern New Army and had a big influence in the late Qing Dynasty. He

charge of training new troops after his return. He played a very important role in events such as
promoting the modernization reform.

The Pros And Cons Of The Sangguniang Kabataan
Youths have long been branded as being the nation's hope. This is something each of them should be
proud of yet it also leads to their vulnerability to being exploited by people who seeks control over
the government. The Sangguniang Kabataan is a council constituted by mainly youth that
servesnoble purposes for the country. To serve as a training ground for the possible future leaders of
this country is the sole purpose of establishing this council. The young ones who aim to be leaders
someday enter this local authority to learn and enrich their leadership skills, to be aware of how the
government acts and responds to the needs of the people, and to serve as the representatives of youth
sector to the government. But, because of occurrence of controversies and alleged reports regarding
the council, the SK has been persistently separated from this principle purpose. Given such, SK ...

Youth who are qualified for candidates are fifteen years of age up to eighteen years of age who
should be residence of the barangay for at least six months. This is a contradiction to the Republic
Act 6809 that is the Age of Majority Law. This suggests that the legal age of entering the field of
work is at the age of eighteen, which is also the legal age for emancipation. The proper age for legal
working is at the age of eighteen but according to the Section 424 of Book III of the Local
Government Code of the Philippines, the age is appointed as fifteen to eighteen years old to SK
officials. This is an opposing matter to what the Sangguniang Kabataan members should be. Youth
officials are still in the minor age that contributes immense repercussion in their capability to run the
council. They are still not in the proper age for them to be government employees regarding their
age but also their skills and knowledge about how the government works. This now will result to
their inefficiency to be youth

Chinese Kingdoms Essay

  • 1. Chinese Kingdoms Essay Around 7,000 years ago, people were found living on the Korean Peninsula. Many tribes appeared in the Liaoning region of Manchuria and northwestern Korea. Rulers ruled these tribes, the first being Dangun, the founder of these tribes and would begin the Gojoseon dynasty. Town states became tribal leagues and eventually became kingdoms. Three kingdoms were in existence at the time. The first kingdom was called Goguryeo (37 B.C. – AD 668) and was located central to the Yalu River. Goguryeo was able to obtain large amounts of land from Manchuria and the Korean peninsula thanks to Gwanggaeto the Great and King Jangsu. The second kingdom was Baekje (18 B.C. – AD 660) and was south of present day Seoul. Silla (57 B.C. – AD 935) was located in the southeast ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Silla's society was built on Buddhists practices due to being the farthest from China and its influences. They developed a military of warriors called Hwarang. An alliance with the Tang Dynasty of China century Silla was able to conquer Goguryeo and Baekje in 668. During the mid 8– th century Silla was able to become a powerful nation and tried to make the nation a Buddhist country. In 698, refugees from Goguryeo established the Kingdom of Balhae in south–central Manchuria. Balhae created a government system modeled after the Goguryeo kingdom including its culture. Many Balhae were Goguryeo nobility and founded the Goryeo dynasty. The Goryeo Dynasty (918–1392) was founded by Wang Geon, a general who had served under Gungye, a rebel prince of the Silla Kingdom. His goal was to reclaim lost territory in the Goguryeo kingdom. The name Korea came from the Goryeo dynasty. Wang Geon was unable to reclaim lost territory, but he did have a sophisticated culture with Buddhist traditions. In 1392, General Yi Seong–gye overthrew Goryeo and established a new dynasty called Joseon. They were able to replace Buddhist traditions to Confucian ideas. • 3. How Did Imperialism Affect American Colonialism This historical study will define the impact of American/European colonialism and the "Unequal Treaty" era in the open trade policies between China, Korea, and japan during the mid–19th century. The important primary documents of the Treaty of Nanking define a pivotal movement in which international trade routes through Chinese Hongs made it possible to expand open trade with Japan and Korea in the 1850s and 1860s. Colonialism acted a catalyst to break down the "closed door" policies of the Korean and Japanese governments, which had often colluded with the Chinese to restrict American and European trade agreements. In some cases, American colonialism certainly made trade less advantageous for the Chinese, Koreans, and the Japanese, but it also brought a more international cooperation between these Asian nations after the Treaty of Nanking was enacted. More so, the Treaty of Amity and Commerce of 1858 between the U.S. and japan also open doors with Korea and China, which reflect a far more open door policy to the advantages of global trade during this time. In essence, an analysis of the important improvements of open trade between China,. Japan, and Korea will be defined within the parameters colonial interventionist policies by the British and United States in the mid–19th century. The importance of open trade is usually defined by the greater or lesser levels of international cooperation between different regions of the world. In China, the continual struggle for ... • 5. Pre Modern East Asia Essay Scholars such as John K. Fairback and David Kang have argued that the theory of the tribute system can explain most of pre–modern East Asian history. However, there was an interesting period of pre–modern East Asian history that cannot be fully explained by the tribute system. This was the Imjin War of 1592–1598, also known as the greatest international conflict in pre–modern East Asia. If pre–modern East Asian countries were tributaries under the hegemon that is China, they would not rebel against their hegemon. As Japan rebelled by attempting to conquer China through Korea, the tribute system cannot explain the Imjin War. This essay will use an alternate theory, a theory of self–interest, to discuss the international relations of Japan, Korea, and China during the Imjin War (1592–1598). During the Imjin War, each nation acted out of its own self–interest rather than as a result of diplomatic hierarchy. In this alternate theory, the self–interest of each nation stems from the hierarchy within the nations themselves. Because there was no democracy in East Asia in the late sixteenth century, each nation had a ruler who had consolidated central power. Also, because Confucian nations greatly valued prestige, protecting and ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Chinese military leaders protected the self–interest of Ming China by using Korean soldiers as buffers in battle. If Ming China waged battle with Japan on their own, they would have suffered many more casualties. However, by using the Korean soldiers already stationed in Korea and already fighting in the war, China was able to reduce the loss of Chinese life (Hur (2015), p.244). The actions taken by Ming China and Chinese leadership during the Imjin War can also be explained by the self–interest theory, as they were looking to preserve the lives of their own people without regard for the lives of their foreign tributary ... • 7. Marco Polo's Influence On The World "I have not told half of what I saw" were the final words of the great Venetian explorer Marco Polo; however, in recent times, Marco Polo's exploits have been doubted more and more. (Pedriali, 161) Most often cited as evidence that Marco Polo's travels may not have been as truthful as reported is the 1998 book Did Marco Polo go to china? by Dr. Frances Wood. Through new research done by Dr. Hans Ulrich Vogel of University of Tübingen in Germany, it has been shown that Marco Polo was mostly truthful in his memoirs, but it has also proven that some things were exaggerated thanks to his ghostwriter Rustichello da Pisa, Marco Polo himself, or later copyists. Marco Polo was a 13th century Venetian merchant explorer who is said to have traveled with his father and uncle to the Far East lands of China, Mongolia, India, and others. During this time the Mongols, known as the Golden Horde, were in control of much of Asia. Although this power was beginning to dissolve by the time the Polos' set off on this journey, it was seen clearly that the Mongols still held power in the region. The Mongol leader, Khubilai Kahn, was a glistening example of this power (Jackson, 1998). Polo is said to have served under him as an envoy for a time before his return to Venice. While in Venice, after being captured by the Genoese during a small conflict between the Genoese and the Venetians, Polo and his Ghostwriter, Rustichello da Pisa, wrote his memoirs, The Travels of Marco Polo. • 9. Catholic Koreans in Choson Korea Essay At the time that Catholicism by a Jesuit brand was initially introduced into Chosŏn Korea, the central government's policy towards the foreign religion had been tied to factional politics (Rausch, p.47). If the governing regional authority or dominant political faction felt sympathetic or indifferent toward the western religion and its converts, its followers were pretty much left alone. Though there were some minor persecutions before the beginning of the 19th Century; after the authorities in the Neo–Confucian hegemony caught an individual Christian on the skipping of rituals and rites, it was not commonplace as it was for the next hundred years. Under the reign of King Sunjo however, Chosŏn Korean authorities went on the attack, ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The destructive Ulhae Persecution of 1815 took the lives of hundreds of Catholics before its rage was finally spent. Chosŏn Korea's central government made another attempt to suppress Catholicism in the Chonghae Persecution of 1827. The campaign was a lot less deadly than the Ulhae Persecution though. Though there were many hundreds of Catholics killed at this time, there is only information on about eight prior to the start of the 1801 persecution and the following persecutions (Rausch, p. 46). Chosŏn Korea's central government seemed to resume as it had before despite the changing of power of political factions in Seoul. Clans at this time were battling with one another for authority in the royal court, and a country was in rebellion. After King Sunjo's death in 1834, grandson of the King Sunjo, King Hongjong was chosen to be the next monarch. The powerful in– law ancestry of the Queen Dowager (The kings removed grandmother) established her family's position by marrying a woman of the Pungyang Cho clan to the young King Hongjong (Rausch, p.47). Queen Dowager was influential on the young mans decisions, as she acted as his regent. She, along with the growing climate among the Chosŏn elites had encouraged the stricter bands that were being put on the converts heads. This no doubt influenced the new Kings decisions, being only eight and the time and seeing this lady as a ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 11. The Founding Of Choson From The Korean Peninsula In 1392 when Choson replaced Koryo from the Korean peninsula, many differences occurred. Since Choson was successor of Koryo, Koryo could have been seen similar to its predecessor in a certain extent, but Choson was a whole new country. Foreign relations, military, society, and religion had all changed especially the religion. The founding of Choson can be interpreted as a religious revolution because reform–minded Confucian scholars wanted to a change. In Late Koryo, Buddhism had corrupted so much that even one of their own members wrote to fix a decadence in their religion. Confucians scholars blamed the Buddhists' mismanagement to justify their action of building a new dynasty . The shift of a state from Buddhism to Neo–Confucianism with the transition from Koryo to Choson is well–known, but it needs to be broken down into pieces to observe the changes that occurred. Religious status of late Koryo, religious status of Choson, and impact of changes politically and socially must be carefully observed and will be described in more detail below. Religious Status of Late Koryo Buddhism was first introduced to Korean peninsula during the Three Kingdoms period by the foreign monks. By the time of Late Silla, Buddhism had become integral part of the culture and was a state religion of Koryo. Due to people of Koryo choosing to endow temples in concern of operations of the temples, Buddhist establishment obtained large landholdings and an accumulated wealth. Monks ... • 15. Coming Of Age Ceremony Essay Every year on the third Monday in May, Korea celebrates the coming–of–age ceremony for young men and women turning 19 in that year. Aside from the ceremonies in different parts of the country, there is also an award ceremony to laud exemplary young adults. The usual gifts for this day are popularly given as a bouquet of red roses and, if lucky, a first kiss. Champagne and perfume are other two options with high–tech gadgets being the latest addition these days. Despite the western appearance however, the coming of age ceremony has its own tradition dating as far as the Goryeo Dynasty (918–1392). The first written record of Korea's coming of age ceremony is found in 965, during King Gwangjong's reign (925–975). The coming of age ritual was a prerequisite for both men and women to get married. As recently as the mid–1950s it was quite common to see traditional coming of age rites held in towns and villages with the attendance of the elderly. By the latter half of the 20th century however, the influx of western culture and its manner of enjoying the rite of passage into adulthood came to replace traditional rites more and more. In 1999, the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism, in order to resurrect the tradition, came up with standardized coming of age rites to be practiced in schools and towns. The purpose was to remind young people of the pride and dignity of traditional culture and teach the true meaning of being a responsible member of ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

I do not shop at H–mart frequently because it is too far from where I live. However, whenever I do shop at H–mart, I remember to stop by my favorite Korean cosmetics store, The Face Shop. From outside, the establishment resembles a typical Korean cosmetic retail store. Bright, soft lightings, special sale items by the storefront, shelves on the walls displaying neatly stocked skin care items, makeup stations with a wide selection of colorful makeup products, posters of beautiful Korean celebrities, and young women employees. I would attempt to answer why does Korean cosmetics industry look and operate differently from the Western cosmetics industry. Result Analysis History of Korean cosmetics dates back to the era of three kingdoms Silla, Goguryeo, and Baekje (BC 37–668), and after the unification of the three kingdoms, Goryeo (918– 1392) was established. It is suggested that Goryeo was the first country in Korean history to popularized use of makeup as well as the development of application techniques (Yoon, 2017). Improved skills learned from China to manufacture mirrors increased the popularity of makeup culture during Goryeo era (Yoon, 2017). Colorful and exotic makeup trend of Goryeo influenced by Buddhism changed as Joseon dynasty (1392–1910) emerged. Joseon revered simpler makeup culture where inner beauty was more important than outer beauty, an ideology reflected from Confucianism (Yoon, 2017). Natural looking makeup culture of Joseon paved the path of a new kind of makeup culture, skin care. It is no surprise that Korean people continue to cherish the skin care regiments today as women of Joseon did hundreds of years ago. When we look into the evolution of Korean cosmetics, it is inevitable that changes occur with cultural and economic shifts and it will continue to reshape and reinvent, as cultural perspective would change. Primarily identified through hanging scrolls, this art is conveyed and studied through "Pure Land subjects" and the work of "Water–Moon Avalokitesvara." The framework that allowed for such a strength in artwork came from "the Goryeo court and its surrounding landscape of Buddhist institutions [that] served as a rich matrix for the production of Buddhist icons and ritual implements." In time, the Goryeo Buddhist art would soon become part of the Japanese archipelago history. The Book of Songs The Warring States period was a time of inner turmoil and widespread chaos in China, in which independent rebel warlords seized land and power in the absence of a centralized authority. There existed a desperate need for a solution to effectively stop the interregional conflicts and establish order in China, and in pursuit of that goal arose the Hundred Schools of Thought. The three primary schools that were conceived during this ideological flourishing were Confucianism, Taoism, and Legalism. However, new Neo–Confucian ideology demanded that women stay confined at home, abiding by the adage 'men outside, women inside'. They were generally equal to men and highly spoken of in the teachings. Taoism believes in the concept of the Yin and the Yang. This concept is that two halves, two opposites, make a whole. It is a balance, equilibrium of wholeness. The Yin is the dark side, while the Yang is the light side. We can see this balance every day in life. Like the day and the night, a man and a woman. There cannot be one without the other. Absence of light creates darkness; absence of heat makes it cold. When there are beautiful things, the ugly ones come out. And when there is good, there is also bad. One thing defines and complements the other. They coexist by opposing each other. Yet, nothing is completely Yang and nothing is completely Yin. One is the starting point of the other. They are interdependent to be complete. When one increases, the other one decreases. This is how they maintain the overall balance. His reign was from July, 1782 to May 8 or 14, 1819 (Chosonkorea.org). Sejong Daewang was the king of the Joseon–dynasty Korea (now known either as North and South Korea) and his reign was from 1418 to 1450 (Chosonkorea.org). The two leaders ruled their land in many similar and different ways. Their behavior while ruling was also similar, yet different in many ways as well. Sejong's pathway to becoming a ruler was much simpler than Kamehameha's. Sejong was not supposed to be the ruler of the Joseon Dynasty. He easily and simply became king (Thoughtco.com). Kamehameha's route, on the other hand, was rife with war, blood, and hardships. Kamehameha had to take parts in many wars and strategizing in order to become the ruler of the Hawaiian Islands. Kamehameha the Great is most known for unifying all the Hawaiian Islands together and Sejong the Great is most known for creating the Korean language (Hangul). Both rulers are still known as leaders who impacted their land and their people. Kamehameha the Great and Sejong the Great were two very effective leaders. Similarly, both Kamehameha and Sejong were both very studious. Kamehameha was trained to be a very skilled warrior and ruler. The Imjin Wars themselves drummed up nationalism in both Korea and Japan2. However for Korea in particular Yi was a potent symbol (Yi Sun–shin 1998). One reason for his importance is that during his life he was not treated well by the Choson government. After fighting off the first Japanese invasion Yi was arrested and demoted to the lowest level in the military. Even after his humiliation and demotion at the hands of the government that he had saved he served devotedly in his station (Yi Sun–shin 1998). Perhaps this was due to his confucian ethic or maybe it was due to his personal nationalism and loyalty to the Korean state "Since that response was also redolent of Korean patriarchy and a host of prevailing social values as well as martial spirit and actually succeeded in driving off the invader, it was to earn him even greater accolades as a savior of his nation" (Gilbert, 2017). Yi's status has also caused an annual festival to be held at the headquarters of the Korean navy to commemorate admiral Yi's accomplishments and to celebrate the blossoming of the cherry trees (Gilbert, 2017). Admiral Yi also has a national shrine that is 342,112 square meters. There are also several statues of Yi Sun–shin in south Korea, the largest is in downtown Seoul (Gilbert, 2017). King Taejo 's foundation for the new empire was based on the rejection of the Goryeo Dynasty, the state religion of Buddhism, and his desire for a Neo–Confucianist society. The new standards of Neo–Confucianism significantly affected the art and visual culture produced during this period of Korean history. During the Joseon period, paintings were considered a form of visual enlightenment for the Korean people. Painting, calligraphy, playing music, and playing the game paduk were regarded as the "Four Accomplishments that were expected of a learned man." The understanding and skill of painting is also said "to be necessary for cultural and intellectual refinement."
