This document provides guidance on listening skills and strategies. It discusses why listening is important, how to prepare before listening, and techniques to use during and after listening, whether to audio recordings or conversations. Key advice includes highlighting main ideas before listening, taking notes using shorthand, writing down what is heard even if unsure of spelling, never leaving questions unanswered, understanding conversation context, and asking for repetition or clarification as needed. The overall message is not to panic if parts are missed but to focus on main ideas and make best guesses.

During Listening to Audio…
Don’t worry if you do not hear and understand
the whole audio but only heard the gist or the
main ideas of it…
As you have highlight the main ideas before listening to the audio, your will brain
will focus on certain point or key information of the audio.
Therefore, you probably will only hear the keyword, the clues or half of the
sentence rather the whole audio during the listening test.
Don’t panic, this is normal! Because your brain have sent the signal to your sense
that you will only be listening to important information than the rest of the audio:
“We only listen to what we only want to hear”

During and After Listening to
Audio…
Write whatever you heard first and taking notes
using short-hand writing for future clues…
Sometime, due to panic, nervousness or the audio fast phase, you might
● missed the chance to write an answer
● unable to spell correctly
● leave the question unanswered
To avoid the above situation, you leave the question unanswered
need to:
Write notes at the left or right side of the exam paper using short-hand writing or short
form (e.g. the = d, with = w, knowledge =k’ledge, because = b’coz, and I will, You have, she
was = I’ll, you’ve & she’s) for future reference. Don’t write on the answer’s space, it will be
hard to erase or examiner will think that you wrote double answer, and deduct marks.

To avoid the above situation, you leave the question unanswered
need to:
Write whatever spelling came up to mind and check or correct it later (sometime,
you’ve made the correct spelling but due to panic, you become unsure).
Never leave question unanswered, read back the note you have written. Guess the
answer based on your logic/ experience/prior reading or context of the sentence.

conversation…guess, confirm or ask for repeat.
For example:
“Sorry, who is it again that involved in that accident?”
“Excuse me, can you repeat that again”
“Sorry, I didn’t get it/get your question. Can you repeat it again?”
“Excuse me, what did you just say?”
