2. WHY WE NEED SLEEP ?
》यदा तु मनसि क्लान्ते कमाात्मानः क्लमान्विताः । सिषयेभ्यो
सनितान्ते तदा स्वसिसत मानिः ।। (च.िू.21/35)
• Mind and sense organs are strongly connected with
each other , one can get knowledge of subject , if
these two are connected .
• When work is more, sense organs and mind become
exhausted so it disconnect the subjects and human
need sleep.
3. EFFECT OF PROPER & IMPROPER SLEEP:-
》सनद्रायत्तं िुखं दुःखं िुसटः कार्श्ा ँबलाबलम् । िृषता क्लीबता
ज्ञानमज्ञानं जीसितं न च।। (च.िू.21/36)
• Happiness and misery ,nourishment and emaciation,
strength and weakness ,virility and sterility, knowledge
and ignorance , life and death all these occur depending
on proper and improper sleep.

4. INDICATION OF DAY SLEEP:- (च.सू.21 & अ.ह.सू.7)
• In summer season night became shorter and vata gets
aggrevated in body due to absorption of fluid,with its
roughness. Hence sleep during daytime in summer is
indicated.
• Sleep during daytime is prescribed for those who are
exhausted by excessive study .riding vehicles ,walking long
distance, alcoholic drinks, sexual acts, carrying heavy
loads,anger ,grief, fear, dysponea, hiccough,diarrehoea,old
persons,children,weak,Emaciated,thirst,colic,indigestion,i
nsane,habituated to sleep in day time etc.

6. 》Acharya charaka add some other points for
one who is prescribed for day time sleep are
below:-
• One who is involved in Singing
• One who fall from heights
• One who is injured
• One who is Mental
• One who awakes in Night
7. CONTRAINDICATIONS FOR DAY SLEEP:-
》बहुमेदःकफाः स्वप्ुः स्नेहसनत्याश्च नाहसन । सिषाताः कण्ठरोगी च
नैि जातु सनशास्त्रसि।। (अ.ह.िू.7/60)
• Persons with excessive fat ,those who are accustomed to
take unctuous substances regularly, those with kapha
constitution, persons suffering with kapha disorders and
suffering with artificial poisoning should not sleep in day
time.
8. 》ग्रीष्मिर्ज्येषु कालेषु सदिास्वप्नात् प्रक
ु प्तः । श्लेष्मसित्ते
सदिास्वप्नस्तस्मात्तेषु न शस्यते ।। मेदन्वस्वनः स्नेहसनत्याः श्लेष्मलाः
श्लेष्मरोसगणः । दू षीसिषातााश्च सदिा न शयीरन् कदाचन ।।
(च.िू.21/44,45)
• Except summer season, daytime sleep aggrevates kapha
and pitta dosha so it is prohibited.
• Persons with Excessive fat , who take unctuous substances
regularly, persons with kapha constitution, persons have
disorders with kapha dosha , who suffering from poisoning .

10. ACCORDING TO MODERN CONCEPT:-
• Excessive daytime sleepiness is one of the most common sleep-
related patient symptoms, and it affects an estimated 20 percent of
the population.
• Persons with excessive daytime sleepiness are at risk of motor vehicle
and work-related incidents, and have poorer health than comparable
adults.
• The most common causes of excessive daytime sleepiness are sleep
deprivation, obstructive sleep apnea, and sedating medications.
Other potential causes of excessive daytime sleepiness include
certain medical and psychiatric conditions and sleep disorders, such
as narcolepsy.
11. • Obstructive sleep apnea is a particularly significant cause
of excessive daytime sleepiness.
• An estimated 26 to 32 percent of adults are at risk of or
have obstructive sleep apnea, and the prevalence is
expected to increase.
• The evaluation and management of excessive daytime
sleepiness is based on the identification and treatment of
underlying conditions (particularly obstructive sleep
apnea), and the appropriate use of activating medications.
