Valley. While in the midst a famous gold rush in Klondike, Canada, many men need sled dogs to get
around on the snow. Buck does not realize the great fear that he is in while living during this time.
Manuel, a gardener on the estate that Buck lives on, gambles Buck to another man and loses. Buck
begins his tortured adventure to his new owner over many days without food or water. Before Buck
was gambled off, he lived a easy and luxurious life on Judge Miller's estate in Santa Clara Valley.
Now, Buck is being beaten with a club by men who are trying to sell him as a servant. The life Buck
is now living is much different than his past life as a pet. The men are treating Buck like an object
with no value, although Buck is a very intelligent creature.
2. Section Analysis The setting of this novel takes place in the heart of what is now Silicon Valley.
The year is 1897, so the valley is not even close to as populated as it is right now. In 1897, there was
a gold rush in the Klondike region of Canada and it made many men from around the globe flock
there to find yellow rock. The setting of Santa Clara County impacts the novel because it builds on

The Right to Die Physician–assisted suicide, also known as euthanasia, has been a hot topic as of
late. If you do not know what this is, physician–assisted suicide is the taking of ones life. This
usually occurs when a patient is in a irreversible state, and must live through a tube. With multiple
cases occurring in the past, current and the more to occur the in the future, this looks to remain a hot
topic. Some of those cases include Terri Schiavo, and Scott Thomas, which have both resulted in
court cases and conversation all around the globe. Physician–assisted suicide is one of those topics
that can be looked at multiple ways, and have multiple different solutions. Someone could look and
justify it through the lens of Natural law and could bring up the doctrine of double effects, or the
preservation of human life. Another person could go against it by using utilitarianism and could
bring up how it maximizes the good, and produces the greatest overall good. Whether you find it to
be murder/suicide or just a smarter decision if you cannot life properly, you must realize this is an

Living in California is a dream for people that are interested in technology. For me, it would be the
ideal living location simply for the quality of life and the job opportunities when I complete my

Building the economic case for the preservation of open space: An analysis of the limitations and
advantages to utilizing the Benefit–Transfer Method toward natural capital and ecosystem valuation.
AUDIENCE
My primary audience includes local, regional and state urban planners and policy–makers who are
considering Benefit–Transfer Methodology (BTM) as a tool to preserve open space and ecosystem
services through policymaking and/or political influence. Additionally, environmental organizations
and land stewards in California could find value in the conclusions of this report as they deliberate
which planning resources to use toward progressing their respective agendas.
Notably, the findings drawn from this report are not exclusive to California and can be helpful to
different areas around the United States as they approach land use decisions unique to their
jurisdiction. Finally, independent groups who may find this research useful include the
environmentally conscious subset of California's population and certain businesses concerned with
the consumption and sustainability of California's natural resources and the tools available to meet

The safe surrender baby program was derived from the need to harbor children who couldn't be
cared for. Looking back in history, infanticide was used as a form of population control when
resources were not abundant (Milner, 1998). Thus, the safe surrender baby program is a humane
alternative to abandoning the baby. Before 1999, those who were concerned with the deaths of
infants as a result of abandonment responded to the problem with various community–based
programs. There were programs that provided 24 hour hotlines and others provided burial for the
infants who have died as a result of abandonment. Thirty–five states passed their laws concerning
abandoned babies, creating safe havens to secretly surrender a child without prosecution by March
2002 (Hittle, 2011).
Current status As of 2005, 51 babies have been safely surrendered in California, marking it the

exist anymore, but if you reflect back on 2016 so far, one of the biggest topics that often dominates
the news and blogosphere concerned the high frequency of assaults on college campuses around the
country. In the place where many young adults begin to learn who they are and who they want to be
while enjoying a comfortable freedom and safety among their peers discovered freedom and safety

Turner was an undergraduate student at Stanford University in Northern California when he was

Introduction
The Earth is a huge planet this is covered by 70 percent water. Astonishingly from this 70 percent
the human population can only use 1 percent of the world's water the rest of it is salt water, frozen,
or in some way unattainable (Santa Clara Valley Water District, 2016). Humans have found many
different ways to obtain this 1 percent of fresh water they need, but the techniques vary depending
on location. In San Jose, California we obtain our water from 3 major sources: groundwater,
imported surface water, and local mountain surface water. These 3 sources contribute different
amounts of water to the San Jose community. Imported surface water composes about 50 percent of
our water supply, while ground water composes roughly 40 percent, and local mountain surface
water composes approximately 10 percent (Santa Jose Water Company, 2016). However, these
percentages can change due to factors such as weather and global warming.
Groundwater
Groundwater is water that seeps through the ground and gets stored in aquifers. The supply of
groundwater is always changing because it is constantly used and replenished. The groundwater
supply replenishes and grows due to rain and snow melt and can decrease due to things like
droughts and heavy usage. Depending on the type of surface of the ground as much as 20 percent of
the rain and snow melt can seep into the ground or as little as 5 percent (Raymond, 1988). Areas

Northern California. It is an area in the larger U.S state of California and stands as a hub of
economic activity with the headquarters of most of the global tech companies calling it home.
Silicon Valley extends to cover the whole of Santa Clara Valley covering the lower part of the San
Francisco Peninsula and the southern region of the East Bay. With that, Santa Clara County,
Alameda County and San Mateo County are all considered as wholesomely making up what is
known as Silicon Valley. In terms of economic pathways, San Jose is described as the capital of
Silicon Valley as it is the hub of activity with unlimited establishments marking the offices of major
