Fannie Mae Dees Park Analysis
Fannie Mae Dees Park, established in the year nineteen seventy–eight, sits just west of downtown
Nashville across from Vanderbilt Medical Center. The park receives its name from the local
Nashville civic leader, Fannie Mae Dees. The commonly known name is the Dragon Park due to the
massive, sixty–foot–tall, mosaic sculpture of a dragon located at the center of the park. The dragon
contains detailed sculpture tiles composed by local children in a nearby school. Over the years, the
displayed piece has undergone many construction phases in order to maintain its beauty and
possibly hazardous condition. Children of most all ages can enjoy the challenge of climbing the
massive structure, however, young children may need to be supervised. For those

Sessile Oak Research Paper
The sessile oak can grow up to a height of 20–45–meter–long with a leaf length of 6–12–centimeter
long. It possesses leaves that are dark green and lobed, flowers that are monoecious, meaning both
male and female are found of the same tree. The male is known by the green catkins and female, the
clusters of modified leaves that resembles red flower buds.
42. Ecological niche
The sessile oak tree is the dominant species in an upland oak woodland, which can "occur mainly in
semi–natural forests on shallow, well–drained and acidic soils." (Sessile Oak) The sessile oak is
mostly found in areas of Europe, from southern Scandinavia to the Mediterranean. As a plant, it
should be a phototroph and absorb nutrients from sunlight. The tree has been known

Personal Narrative: KISS Monster Mini Golf
KISS Monster Mini Golf I went here because I was looking for something to do on a hot day, and I
knew that this place was indoors with air conditioning. It is located in what I would call a strip mall
or shopping plaza, taking up several suites on single floor building. As a big fan of traditional
miniature golf courses, I can tell right now that this is not what this miniature golf course is. By
traditional miniature golf, I mean the big outdoor courses with castles and windmills. We used to
have one here in Las Vegas. It was located near the 15 freeway. In fact, you could easily see it when
traveling southbound before the Sahara exit. They closed it several years ago, and I have missed it
ever since. So if you decide to go to KISS

Trover Legal Case
Facts: This case concerns trover, an action at common law to recover the value of personal property
which was disposed of improperly by another. It concerns the market value of 242 cords of timber,
which was harvested from public land given to an Indian reservation. The timber was cut when
those that cut the timber knew it was Indian property on Indian land. The timber was sold by
defendant in another town to an awaiting purchaser for value. History: Affirmed. Issue: Is the
defendant's liability the value of the timber that gets added when resold in the market place, or the
wholesale value at the place where the timber was cut? Ruling: The court ruled that an unlawful
taking, where the thing taken is then marketed for full price, a defendant's

Stanford Tree Thesis
Stanford Tree
The Palo Alto city seal includes an image of one of the very common, yet still absolutely stunning,
Redwood trees in California. Fortunately for avid sports players and fans, this is not the only place
that you will spot redwoods in the college town. Just around the corner at Stanford University their
mascot, a tree, is entertaining a plethora of cheering fans with its funny twirls and dance moves.
Some may say that the Stanford Tree is a boring and dull mascot, However the Stanford Tree is
anything but mundane. The mascot should clearly be inducted into the Mascot Hall of Fame because
of its very fun and memorable design, monumental performances, large impact on youth, big
impression on the community, and marvelous effect ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The fact that the tree is so unique and different gave the students a lot to be proud of, especially
when it was first introduced."The Tree ended up receiving so much positive attention that the Band
decided to make it a permanent fixture, and thus began the process through which the Tree has
gradually colonized the collective unconscious of Stanford's student body" (Marritz). As a general
rule, if a mascot receives a lot of positive attention, its presence is enjoyed by the community.
Without the presence of the Stanford Tree, the Stanford community of fans, students, and professors

My Marin A Short Story
If I turn my head to the left, I can look out and see Mt Baker through the masts of the sailboats here
in the Marina. The view changes daily depending on the weather. Right now the peaks on Mt Baker
are cold and sharp, covered in snow. I can gauge the wind just by looking at the flagpoles and the
compass I placed on my desk letting me know which way is up. I am constantly confused as to
which direction I am facing, confusion which increases with my age. I always took pride in my
memory, being able to remember names and faces of classmates from 36 years ago, but since
starting this job a year ago, I find my memory not as good as it used to be. Thankfully, most
everyone here at the Marina are at that stage in their lives also, so it is ok to ask over and over–

Even though the sun is shining bright enough to make me close my curtains against the afternoon
heat through the glass, it is bitter cold outside. It seems strange how one week it can be warm
enough to run around the yard coatless chasing my dog and the next we are bundled up like eskimos
in the far north. The wind blew so severely last week that I spent the better part of the day recording
lines replaced and other damages noted on the docks by our maintenance team. Thankfully, no real
damage was had. I tried walking on the docks during the worse of it, but being a landlubber, I found
myself slightly seasick from just the small time out there. Perfect person to be working at a Marina–

Elie Wiesel's Night-Personal Narrative
It's the grassy greens, near the winding pebbly road I remember first. The long stalks of spinifex still
line the edges, though now neatly trimmed all around. The uneven crunch–crunch–crunch of the
gravel as I drive my sunny Porsche across town. Even in winter, bindies pepper the half soccer field,
other foliage: a bush dotted with withered yellow berries and emerging saplings surround the patchy
lawn like spectators. Smack bang in the middle, winter clawing its way in, stands a grandiose
resilient oak, basking under the mild heat of the country sun, glorified as it houses two tombs. Its
boughs stretch towards me invitingly and I smile...

tiny cube of chicken stock. Dad would stomp in, the floor boards creaking as he limped into the

right tree for your yard, you need consider factors such as maturity size and number of seasons it
take for the tree reproduce. Keeping trees healthy is critical but highly challenging. A good tree must
endure extreme weather conditions, neglectful care, environmental toxins and disease and insect
attacks. It is also important to recognize that slow maturing trees tend to live longer and stronger.

Decay And Its Effects On The Global Amount Of Carbon Decay
Decay All living things must decay to balance the global amount of carbon. Decay can take many
years to be completed. Some decay more rapidly than others. For instance, Robinia Pseudoacacia, or
Black Locust, has a slower decay rate than coniferous. These both also differ from the decay of
human bodies. There are also some less substantial things that can decay as well, but are not needed
for balance. All softwoods come from coniferous trees. They grow faster than hardwood trees, and
are easier to manufacture. This is because the trees grow fairly tall and straight which makes it
easier to cut long, straight planks. Because of the easy manufacturing, this type of wood comes very
cheap. Most softwood is used for indoor furniture, or decoration. Some types of softwood trees are:
pine, spruce, cedar, and redwood. These trees decay faster for the same reason they are easily
manufactured. Manufacturers put several layers of paint on some of the trees. This is one factor that
contributes in preventing decay. All it does though, is keep out the fungus that causes decay (mr–
dt.com). The only agent of wood decay are fungi. Wood does deteriorate from insects, UV rays, and
marine animals, but this is not actually decay. There are three types of decay; white, brown, and soft.
You can tell the difference between them by looking at the color of the wood as it decays. White
looks bleached, brown is of course a brown color, but soft can be either. In white rot the whitish
color comes from

center, the Priest River Experimental Forest (PREF) was set up to provide valuable information for
both management organizations and forestry administrations. All of these resources would improve
forestry management and sustainability research in the western region. The Priest River
Experimental Forest (PREF) was established in 1911. It lies between the Priest River and the Selkirk
Mountains in the State of Idaho. The Priest River Experimental Forest (PREF) contains two
Research Natural Areas: Canyon Creek (977acres), which was established in 1937; and Wellner
Cliff (310acres), which was established in 2006. Headquarters area is located in the West of the
forest, including an office or lab building, three residential buildings, a bunkhouse with mess hall,
and a modest shop. Before 1930, the forest was served as the headquarters for the Priest River
Forest Experiment Station. After that, it was combined into the Northern Rocky Mountain Forest

My Forest
As I was tramping through the my forest in the midst of fall I wandered away from my normal route
into thicker undergrowth. Suddenly I stumbled right into a clearing of lush moss with a towering old
oak right in the middle and a small crevice running around it, and marvelous view of the sunrise.
The place I had, by chance, wandered into was simply beautiful. So for this I named it Great Tree,
the greatest place in my forest. My forest is a small three acre plot of beautiful woodland with a
variety of tree species and a few secrets tucked away.
The outer edge of almost any forest is quite thick and hard to break through so entrances are
necessary, and my forest has three of them, one at the top one at the middle and another one right at
the bottom. The top one is newest with some of the small trees still in a pile off to the side. The trail
leading from the entrances curves a good amount because of a pile of large rocks and a long dead
cedar tree. The trail quickly disappears because that area is rarely traveled and forgotten. The second
trail is the most used one starting by an old weathered and scratched wooden swing. Then a few feet
along a muddy walkway to a huge pointed flat stone with a portion of the tip broken. The last
entrance is very old it is covered by a thin wall of tall undergrowth and hanging thrones yet when
you slip through it there is a wide and flat trail leading to the Christmas Tree Grove, home of the
spruce trees .
There is no dominant tree in my forest

As a former resident of Pine Mountain Club for over 20 years and regular visitor to Camp Scheideck

the facts that made this place so special. This is what set this place aside from the other over
cluttered and over priced campgrounds throughout this state. This hide away was one of the few

The Story Of The Chase : A Short Story : The Chase
The Chase
The sound of her alarm ringing in her ear was what woke her up so suddenly that morning. Emma
knew that these next two days were going to be interesting. She was going to go camping with a
group of three of her friends in the wilderness. Emma had golden hair which reminded people of the
sun beaming on a hot summer day. Her eyes were blue like the ocean and her skin was pale like
sand. As she was getting ready she could hear the thumping of her father's footsteps as he was
climbing up the stairs.
He opened the door to her room and hesitantly said, "Mom and I are waiting in the car, we are ready
when you are."
Emma could tell her parents were worried. This was the first time she was going to be away from
her family this long. As soon as she finished gathering all her clothes and packed it all up, she could
hear the honking from the car letting her know it was time to go.
The car ride there was long and interesting. They passed by many tourist attractions such as the
"Mall of America." Emma was really excited to finally get to go on this trip with her three best
friends, Daniel, Jane, and Chris. They always ate lunch with each other at school and they basically
did everything together. They trusted each other with all their secrets and they were the most
themselves around their friends than their family.
As Emma and her family were pulling up to the campsite, she started to notice her surroundings.
There were many broad and enormous coniferous trees surrounding her

Plant Growth Of The Brassica Rapa
Background There is a drought in California which is in turn affecting the number of crops that can
be grown in a given amount of time. Farmers now must find a way to grow crops in an economical
fashion while also maximizing each yield as much as possible. However, plant growth can be
influenced by seed variety, the amount of water, the soil type, amount of light, etc., and many other
variables. For this experiment, we are testing the growth of the Brassica rapa, a mustard plant under
the same conditions of water, sunlight, and oxygen, with two different treatment solutions. There
will be two pots, one has a treatment of just deionized water and the other a treatment of fertilizer as
well as deionized water. Because the fertilizer has the added benefit of nitrogen, phosphorous, and
potassium along with the same quantity of deionized water as the first pot, it is hypothesized that
both sets of plants will grow, however the pot with fertilizer will grow more than the pot with just
water treatment. In the Fertilizer Responses of Volunteer Longleaf Pine Trees within a Loblolly Pine
Plantation: Separating Direct Effects from Competition Effects paper, an experiment on the effect of
fertilization on two trees was done. Before the experiment was initiated, it was known that
fertilization increases the growth and productivity of the loblolly pine tree, while it was
hypothesized that the longleaf pine tree is less responsive to fertilization (Anderson, 2009). The
results of the

Preservation of the Pine Barrens
There is much preservation throughout this country. One that is most famous to New Jersey is the
Pine Barrens. I don't believe this bio diverse ecosystem should be developed on. This precious
preservation should be saved. In these following paragraphs the author will discuss the animals
involved, the plants, major parts, and the dangers facing it today. The Pine Barrens is one of the
world's unique nature areas. It is designated as a biosphere reserve by the United Nations, and a last

The Barred Owl, which is endangered altogether, lives here in small numbers. The pine snake is a
vicious terrestrial snake that can also be arboreal.
Plants are abundant throughout the Pine Barrens. The pine tree is the most typical, especially the
pitcher pine. This is a pygmy pine tree only about ten feet. Other trees consist of pin oaks and cedar.
Cedar trees and their roots are what make the water a brownish red color. One of the most popular
plants is also their main crop. This plant is the blueberry and cranberry bushes. The Pinelands also
have rare plants. The pitcher plant, for one is related to the Venus Fly Trap. This amazing plant traps
flies by attracting them with a liquid which is like pollen located at the bottom of the pitcher. The
wetlands are an amazing part of the pinelands. They prevent pollution from entering the lakes as
well as preventing floods. This is a major part of the safety of the Pine Barrens. This is where the
endangered Pine Barrens tree frog lives. On a clear night you can hear these frogs a mile away. They
hang out on reeds and trees near the water. This forest is home to many other animals. For instance,
there are cranes, water snake, turtles, salamanders, small pickerel and bass, and other frogs like
spring peepers. The water snakes are usually mistaken for poisonous water moccasins, which do not
live in New Jersey. Wetlands are usually near lake edges, stream edges, or bogs and swamps. There

Tundra Welty: A Short Story
A devoid landscape lies ahead. The petite stream is the only guide, slithering nimbly on – almost
like a snake. The clouds are mighty; they are too dense to see the holy, cerulean sky. Stretching up to
try and touch this sky are monolithic towers, which overshadows anyone who passes. Moss clenches
onto them, their humdrum green tops merging together. They are quite daunting: their lanky
structure, over hanging ledges (that threaten to give way any moment) – everything about the wild
stone pillars are awe striking, and great. Although the tundra land was intriguing, there was a lot
more to see; meandering down the valley, the grass (which was once a luscious green) has begun to
grow dead, and dry. The shadowy sky – which is filled with ubiquitous clouds – reflects the
decaying ground. It is a shield against the sun; it ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Not a moment later, a hideous troll crosses the leaf littered path; it's as macabre as a ghoul, if not
more. It grumbles to itself, and scratches it's extensive, blotchy stomach. With it comes a hideous
stench of methane and decay (only the Gods knew what it had been up to). It suddenly stops at the
edge of the path. Every animal holds it's – perhaps – final breath. The grotesque creature then
plunders on; animals begin to sing gleefully again, and the wind whispers vociferously once more.
Separating from the curious undergrowth, there stands a cluster of undersized mountains. Fog seeps
from every crack it can find, poisoning the land with poor sight. Blending in with the mountains is a
castle; the mist and the mountains are its guards, and the bridge (that is beautifully chiselled) is the
only access to it. All in all, it looks as intimidating as a cobra preparing to strike, and was not to be
approached without a good reason. Trees are the only thing for a passers' protection; but they are

There is two type of force affecting pine tree, these are horizontal and vertical forces. This
horizontal force is due to wind factor and the vertical force is due to gravity. The horizontal and

It was our second day in Montana, and I was so excited to be going on a beautiful hike with my

enjoyed hikes in Northern Montana. We figured there would be lots of other travelers, and the first
part was crowded with people. But as intensity increased, the number of people decreased. We
trekked up the steep incline on the first mountain, to the point where we were able to see into the

As we gazed at the sky, we spotted an enormous storm that was moving our way quickly. As I
observed our surroundings, I noticed that there was not a single soul in sight. We were a good ways
into our expedition, so we chose to continue. The storm would catch up with us one way or another.
The distant thunder became louder and louder as the storm neared us. Eventually, it was so loud that
I thought it would deafen us. I got a whiff of something burning, and I realized that it was the smell
of the lightning; the storm had caught up. We were now at the bottom of the hill, in the flat and open
valley filled with long grasses and wildflowers. I felt the rain pouring down on my head, and it only
became stronger. Our visibility became limited, but we were luckily able to make out the shape of
some pine trees in the distance. I was agitated and losing hope at this point. My hair was

Native American Iroquois Tribe: Candle Sticks
Traditionally, the Native American Iroquois tribe played lacrosse with a wooden stick, with a woven
net at one end. The lacrosse ball was either made from the knot of a tree, or deerskin.
The wooden sticks were artfully hand–carved from hickory. The stick's length measured about 48
inches. The modern sticks are made from plastic and other materials approved by the ILF
(International Lacrosse Federation). Yet there are players who still prefer traditional equipment.
Iroquois artisans like Alf Jacques make traditional wooden sticks for those players.
Alf Jacques vigilantly harvests hickory trees by selecting the trees with the fewest knots. Such trees
produce the best sticks. When Alf Jacques harvests a hickory tree, he unfailingly plants a

Pine Trees of Georgia
There are pine trees just about everywhere in Georgia. Pine trees have always been important
resources to people in North America. Native Americans used pine trees as treatments for
respiratory conditions and to build items such as canoes or buildings. Today, pine trees are one the
most important timber sources in North America. Pine trees belong to a group of trees known as the
conifers, meaning the trees have cones and needle–like or scale–like leaves. There are about seven
very common types of pine trees found in Georgia that grow in several different environments from
the Appalachian Mountains all the way to the coast. Over many years pine trees have adapted to
these very diverse environments. The Eastern White Pine is found in Georgia through the mountains
and the upper Piedmont. These types of pine trees grow best in moist areas, such as near a river, or
in areas that have a lot of hardwood trees as well. They can be recognized by their leaves, which
look like needles and grow in bundles of five. The Eastern White Pine is known as one of the largest
pines in Georgia. Historically these trees grew to be up to 175 feet tall but now in recent years only
grow to about 100 feet in height. This type of pine is also a rapid grower. An Eastern White pine can
reach forty feet in about twenty years, which is relatively fast for a tree. Another type of pine tree
found in Georgia is the Loblolly Pine. The Loblolly Pine can be found throughout the state, but is
most common in the

Beetles Vs Lodgepole Pine
The authors in this article explored the following questions: Firstly, if the constant reproduction of
pine beetles in whitebark pine in high elevation is a consequence of their eruption in lodgepole pine
or it represent some initial changes in the system due to changes in temperature. Secondly, with
changing climatic conditions how insects determine their choices of host plant species. Thirdly, what
is the reaction of other natural enemies to pine beetles attack to whitebark versus lodgepole pine?
They tested the hypothesis if the mountain pine beetles attack lower defensive host like whitebark
pine while expanding their range to high elevations due to increasing high temperatures. Previous
research suggests that either whitebark pine should ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Even with field study, I would give information on temperature and other factors that influence
results of this study with variation in each year's climate to make it more convincing. Abstract was
okay but the results does not coincides with the title and all assumptions made by authors. I would
be more specific like instead of eruptive insect I would use mountain pine beetle or even start with
"Comparing susceptibility of historic host lodgepole pine and naive host whitebark pine to mountain
pine beetle attack in a field study". I think the current title is too broad and tide to bigger picture of
this study. I understand it is sometimes difficult in field studies but I would try to be more consistent
with the time of the year I start and end collecting data and also have equal sample size for both tree
species. May be due to journal requirement they changed the traditional way of scientific article but
I prefer to read and write methods before results. I think the way they wrote this paper or may be
their wording makes it confusing and have to read it back and forth for clear picture, seems like
some sections of introduction should be in discussion but discussion is already too long. I would try
to make it simple to understand with some rearrangement in text. I felt like they tried to fit in all
data they

Personal Narrative: Feathered Mammals
A soft wind runs over calm water, creating gentle ripples which lap at the murky surface. Taking a
deep breath, an assault of fish scented pond water fills my nostrils, causing the sensitive sniffer to
crinkle in disgust. The atmosphere, while calm, does nothing to smooth the grimace forming on my
face at the swarm of gnats floating atop the algae infested water. What a pity that the once gleaming
pond was now a waste pool. Gazing toward the grimy tarn, my eyes meander over a gliding flock of
ducks swimming in the water closest to me. Dirt encrusted feathered bodies wade across the pond
toward my resting place, each mammal following the other with no mind to the possible dangers.
How funny, that even feathered mammals blindly follow one another.

Biology Personal Statement
How does one climb a tree? Past courage and adrenaline, the big picture breaks down into many
complex parts. The infinite amount of processes happening, from the adrenaline rush to the firing of
muscle fibers to the flow of blood to limbs, are all incredibly complex on the biological and
chemical level. Each small component contributes its own part to the ultimate success of our body
system. These "hows" and "whys" fascinate me. As I took life science classes, these questions
resurfaced more and more frequently; the more I learned, the more I wanted to know. The
knowledge I gained from courses in Biology and Chemistry provided me with my first rain boots to

Descriptive Essay On Sighing Trees
The Sighing Trees The second of two back doors is white with black accents and a big window in
the top half. As you push the door open you hear an array of screeches and clicks. "Don't let the dog
out!" Mother shouts before you walk out the door. Closing itself when you let go of it, the door shuts
with a slam. You gently set your foot down onto the step of the small, cement, back porch and your
rainboot makes a "thwip" sound. Stepping off of the cement onto decorative stones, triangular and
jagged, then onto the ground, you begin to acclimate to the temperature. Each step makes the same
soft thunk as the first you heard. The shadow of the overhanging roof lets go of its grip on you and
your own shadow appears. You feel the warmth of the summer sun on your skin, its rays kissing
your rosy red cheeks. Then you begin to notice the sound of the grass, brushing against the bottom
of your blue rainboots, and the crunching of acorns and twigs underfoot. Crunch. Pop. Crack. A
familiar sound. Your attention turns slightly to your right where you find there is a small, dirt path,
barely noticeable behind the fingers of the shrubs and saplings on either side of it. Pushing aside
some of the leafy, pliable branches in your way, you start down the path. Your lungs fill with a rich,
earthy smell. A good smell. It's the smell of mother nature's construction and destruction of life.
Beams of golden, white, and green light shine through the canopy of needles and leaves above.

Longleaf Pinn Ecosystem Analysis
The Pinus palustris, or more commonly referred to as longleaf pine trees, were once the dominant
tree type in the Southeastern United States and has been further exterminated at about 97% of its
original range (Frost 1995). When you think of fire, you typically will think of destruction, but with
the right fire regime in certain ecosystems it can actually help the area become more successful. Due
to the degradation of the longleaf pine forests, prescribed burning has become a necessary factor to
keep the forests successful (Lavoie et al., 2014). The biodiversity of the longleaf pin ecosystem
depends on a lot of rainfall, porous, sandy soils, and a cycle of fires (Greenberg, 2002). Longleaf
pine trees have a tolerance of and ability to regenerate in a high frequency fire regime (Loudermilk
et al., 2011). Once longleaf pines grow above the height most fires tend to be, they have a high
survival chance where as if they were in the shrub state, then they would be burned from being
exposed and lack of structure maturity. Most longleaf pines will grow in an area where there are also
hardwoods growing ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The hardwoods will stay in the shrub state unless the fire frequency decreases then the hardwoods
will grow rapidly causing the longleaf pines to fight for nutrients more (Guerin, 1993). As well as
helping the longleaf pines receive more nutrients, if you take away the hardwoods from the equation
for wildfires, then the length of the time that the fire will be in the forest will diminish greatly. Fires
do not affect the adult trees as much as the younger trees because they are more susceptible to the
fires from being lower to the grounds or smaller (Boyer, 1993). Since most of the trees in the two
forests that were measured on the UNCW campus were mature longleaf pines, the prescribed fires
did not affect the trees as must as it would if the trees were

Dynamo Sustainability Study
Presently owned by the Credit Valley Conservation Authority, the limestone ruins of the1888 Credit
Valley Dynamo, known locally as the Barber Dynamo, are located in Georgetown, Ontario and can
only be accessed by using the Credit Valley Footpath. The footpath is a side trail of the Bruce Trail
that follows the gorge created by the Credit River is tough 3+km hike, through the woods beside the
river, begins at the remains of the Barber Paper Mill on River Road in Georgetown and takes you
under the massive 1856 GTR trestle before finally reaching the scenic ruins of dynamo building.
Before starting your hike, take a few minutes to check out the Provincial Plaque at 99 River Road,
which gives an excellent outline of the dynamo's history. In the late 19th Century, after finding the
existing dam and water wheels system supplied insufficient power to meet the increasing demands
of the Barber Paper Mill, mill manager, John Rolf Barber travelled to England and the US in search
of a solution. He eventually located a manufacturer in Ohio, C. F. Brush, who built and supplied a
100 HP generator which could be powered by water driven turbines. Barber then built a higher dam
downstream from the mill, then the newly installed dynamo began supplying the mill with
electricity via transmission lines through the woods. In 2015, after including the Barber Mill on
Canada's Top 10 Endangered Places list, Heritage Canada described the dynamo as "a remarkable ...

Six Types For Woodworking Projects
Six Types of Wood to Use for Woodworking Projects and Why
Visit your local home improvement store – let alone a specialty lumberyard – and there are so many
types of wood to choose from, it's enough to intimidate the beginning woodworker. Questions start
popping into your head, such as, "What kind of wood would be better to make a ...?", or "I wonder
what that wood looks like when it's stained?" Frankly, it can be a little overwhelming without some
guidance. The bottom line is, none of these woods is necessarily better or worse than the others; it
matters mainly what you intend to make or do with the wood. Let's consider six of the most
common, most popular species based on the type of projects they're best suited for. Keep in mind,
this isn't a definitive list, but more a set of guidelines to get you started in the right direction. ...

It may be streaked in color, with purples, browns, and greens in the heartwood. Of course, this
coloration is a matter of personal preference; many people paint the wood, depending on the project.
Since it is a particularly stable wood, it is often used as secondary material in furniture. It works
well for drawer sides and glides, structural members, and internal bracing in furniture where more
expensive wood is used for the exterior.
Oak ($$$): While there are many varieties of oak, the most common in woodworking are red and
white, having a relatively straight, tight grain . Red oak is a popular choice among woodworkers for
furniture, architectural trim work, and cabinetry. White oak is also used in furniture building, but is
somewhat less available, and therefore more expensive. It's one of the most prevalent types of wood
that was showcased in the Arts and Crafts movement of the late 19th century; white oak is still
commonly used in boat building and outdoor furniture due to its greater resistance to

Lake Descriptive Writing
A lake is no place for a watch. I think it's unreasonable to request anyone to keep time in such a
place. My tan forearm barred no watch; no stripe of pale skin to indicate a childhood subject to the

both to mingle with nature. My bare, unpainted toes were always covered with mud from walking

old cabin. It was difficult to see from the road, and at times I felt nobody ever went there but me.
Tall yellowed grasses embraced the water's rocky edge like a mother's protective hug. Clumps of
Aspen whispered collectively as I built forts in their midst, and Ponderosa tress stood tall and

Alternative Lumber Harvesting Methods Like Shelterwood
The U.S. Lumber Industry is one of the largest industries in the U.S., employing more than 1.4
million people and producing products valued at more than $200 billion every year according to the
USDA (2004). The US Forest Industry is unique in that their methods for harvesting lumber are
closely scrutinized by private organizations, sectors of the U.S. government, as well as internally by
the logging companies themselves. In many areas, old techniques and methods are being discarded
and researchers are struggling to keep up. Forests of the Pacific Northwest have primarily been
harvested with clear cutting systems. Clear cutting systems lead to many ecological issues such as
poor aesthetics, habitat disturbance, increased streamflow, and soil erosion among others (Bliss
2000). Alternative lumber harvesting methods like Shelterwood (Matthews 1989) and Group
Selection systems have been developed as different approaches to Silvicultural maintenance. The
proposed benefits of these approaches as alternatives to clearcutting include; greater forest
biodiversity, greater aesthetic quality, improved forest regeneration and greater future timber fields
of that area. In order to effectively determine the feasibility of the alternate lumber harvesting
systems of Shelterwood Systems Group Selection Cutting, long–term observation of forest
regeneration is needed. Forest regeneration is key in determining the success of any silvicultural
system. This paper will look at forest regeneration

Maple Wood Research Paper
Maple is most commonly associated with the production of syrup, not primarily with smoking food.
Sugar maple trees are tapped for their sap, which is reduced to make maple syrup and reduced even
further to make maple sugar. The sugar contained in the wood is thought to enhance its value as a
smoking wood.
Which tree do maple wood chips come from?
Maple trees are native to Asia but can also be found in Europe, Africa and North America. There are
about 128 species of maple tree. The wood from maple trees is classified as a hardwood, which
means that it is dense and relatively dry when compared to the wood from softwoods. Wood from
softwood trees like redwood and cedar can be highly resinous. Resinous woods cause creosote
build–up and can give foods an unpleasant taste. How does smoking with maple wood chips impact
taste? How is it unique?

It has more in common with fruit woods like cherry and apple than with stronger flavored woods
like hickory or mesquite. It is perfect when used in combination with the more flavorful woods as
you can use it to tone down their harshness and to give them a little sweetness. Note that while
maple wood does give out a lot of white smoke when you first put it on the coals, it will quickly be
replaced by the light blue smoke you want from your wood chips. Which foods work best with the
maple wood chip flavor?
Maple wood's sweetness is thought to be best for pork and poultry and will pair well with their
flavors. This is because those meats are milder and maple wood enhances their flavors without
canceling them out the way a stronger–tasting wood might. Maple wood does an especially good job
when used to smoke hams. If you pair it with another mild smoke wood like alder, you can use
maple wood chips to smoke fish like salmon and trout. Maple is also used by some to smoke
cheeses, often in combination with other mild

Fannie Mae Dees Park Analysis

  • 1. Fannie Mae Dees Park Analysis Fannie Mae Dees Park, established in the year nineteen seventy–eight, sits just west of downtown Nashville across from Vanderbilt Medical Center. The park receives its name from the local Nashville civic leader, Fannie Mae Dees. The commonly known name is the Dragon Park due to the massive, sixty–foot–tall, mosaic sculpture of a dragon located at the center of the park. The dragon contains detailed sculpture tiles composed by local children in a nearby school. Over the years, the displayed piece has undergone many construction phases in order to maintain its beauty and possibly hazardous condition. Children of most all ages can enjoy the challenge of climbing the massive structure, however, young children may need to be supervised. For those ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 3. Sessile Oak Research Paper The sessile oak can grow up to a height of 20–45–meter–long with a leaf length of 6–12–centimeter long. It possesses leaves that are dark green and lobed, flowers that are monoecious, meaning both male and female are found of the same tree. The male is known by the green catkins and female, the clusters of modified leaves that resembles red flower buds. 42. Ecological niche The sessile oak tree is the dominant species in an upland oak woodland, which can "occur mainly in semi–natural forests on shallow, well–drained and acidic soils." (Sessile Oak) The sessile oak is mostly found in areas of Europe, from southern Scandinavia to the Mediterranean. As a plant, it should be a phototroph and absorb nutrients from sunlight. • 5. Personal Narrative: KISS Monster Mini Golf KISS Monster Mini Golf I went here because I was looking for something to do on a hot day, and I knew that this place was indoors with air conditioning. It is located in what I would call a strip mall or shopping plaza, taking up several suites on single floor building. As a big fan of traditional miniature golf courses, I can tell right now that this is not what this miniature golf course is. By traditional miniature golf, I mean the big outdoor courses with castles and windmills. We used to have one here in Las Vegas. It was located near the 15 freeway. In fact, you could easily see it when traveling southbound before the Sahara exit. They closed it several years ago, and I have missed it ever since. So if you decide to go to KISS ... • 7. Trover Legal Case Facts: This case concerns trover, an action at common law to recover the value of personal property which was disposed of improperly by another. It concerns the market value of 242 cords of timber, which was harvested from public land given to an Indian reservation. The timber was cut when those that cut the timber knew it was Indian property on Indian land. The timber was sold by defendant in another town to an awaiting purchaser for value. History: Affirmed. Issue: Is the defendant's liability the value of the timber that gets added when resold in the market place, or the wholesale value at the place where the timber was cut? Ruling: The court ruled that an unlawful taking, where the thing taken is then marketed for full price, a defendant's ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 9. Stanford Tree Thesis Stanford Tree The Palo Alto city seal includes an image of one of the very common, yet still absolutely stunning, Redwood trees in California. Fortunately for avid sports players and fans, this is not the only place that you will spot redwoods in the college town. Just around the corner at Stanford University their mascot, a tree, is entertaining a plethora of cheering fans with its funny twirls and dance moves. Some may say that the Stanford Tree is a boring and dull mascot, However the Stanford Tree is anything but mundane. The mascot should clearly be inducted into the Mascot Hall of Fame because of its very fun and memorable design, monumental performances, large impact on youth, big impression on the community, and marvelous effect ... The fact that the tree is so unique and different gave the students a lot to be proud of, especially when it was first introduced."The Tree ended up receiving so much positive attention that the Band decided to make it a permanent fixture, and thus began the process through which the Tree has gradually colonized the collective unconscious of Stanford's student body" (Marritz). As a general rule, if a mascot receives a lot of positive attention, its presence is enjoyed by the community. • 11. My Marin A Short Story If I turn my head to the left, I can look out and see Mt Baker through the masts of the sailboats here in the Marina. The view changes daily depending on the weather. Right now the peaks on Mt Baker are cold and sharp, covered in snow. I can gauge the wind just by looking at the flagpoles and the compass I placed on my desk letting me know which way is up. I am constantly confused as to which direction I am facing, confusion which increases with my age. I always took pride in my memory, being able to remember names and faces of classmates from 36 years ago, but since starting this job a year ago, I find my memory not as good as it used to be. Thankfully, most everyone here at the Marina are at that stage in their lives also, so it is ok to ask over and over– What was your name again? ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Even though the sun is shining bright enough to make me close my curtains against the afternoon heat through the glass, it is bitter cold outside. It seems strange how one week it can be warm enough to run around the yard coatless chasing my dog and the next we are bundled up like eskimos in the far north. The wind blew so severely last week that I spent the better part of the day recording lines replaced and other damages noted on the docks by our maintenance team. Thankfully, no real damage was had. I tried walking on the docks during the worse of it, but being a landlubber, I found myself slightly seasick from just the small time out there. Perfect person to be working at a Marina– ... The long stalks of spinifex still line the edges, though now neatly trimmed all around. The uneven crunch–crunch–crunch of the gravel as I drive my sunny Porsche across town. Even in winter, bindies pepper the half soccer field, other foliage: a bush dotted with withered yellow berries and emerging saplings surround the patchy lawn like spectators. Smack bang in the middle, winter clawing its way in, stands a grandiose resilient oak, basking under the mild heat of the country sun, glorified as it houses two tombs. Its boughs stretch towards me invitingly and I smile... Dad had this real bushy moustache hiding his mouth, you could never really tell what mood he was in, or what ... During the season, Sunday was soup day– she'd make it while we were with dad, zipping up and down the sidelines, and heated it up in that well– scrubbed, large silver pot when we came in from soccer. Some days it was kind of a proper soup, a bit like those Penelope had in her mansion near town, from a real recipe– cream of mushroom, minestrone, or French onion. Never cream of chicken though... the place up in town was quite pricey. Other times it'd just be a Mum's Mix just the way I liked it, made from whatever scraps and bits and pieces needed to be used up. The ultimate rule to good cooking, she'd say, if you put nice things in it, it can't possibly turn out nasty. In went the leftover bits of ham, corn cobs, softened tomatoes, the stalk of chives sitting at the back of the fridge, left over herbs from the garden, and a tiny cube of chicken stock. Dad would stomp in, the floor boards creaking as he limped into the kitchen. Grey eyed, and growling with hunger, he'd slurp down the whole without even picking up his spoon, bits and pieces sticking to his unruly black moustache. • 17. Decay And Its Effects On The Global Amount Of Carbon Decay Decay All living things must decay to balance the global amount of carbon. Decay can take many years to be completed. Some decay more rapidly than others. For instance, Robinia Pseudoacacia, or Black Locust, has a slower decay rate than coniferous. These both also differ from the decay of human bodies. There are also some less substantial things that can decay as well, but are not needed for balance. All softwoods come from coniferous trees. They grow faster than hardwood trees, and are easier to manufacture. This is because the trees grow fairly tall and straight which makes it easier to cut long, straight planks. Because of the easy manufacturing, this type of wood comes very cheap. Most softwood is used for indoor furniture, or decoration. Some types of softwood trees are: pine, spruce, cedar, and redwood. These trees decay faster for the same reason they are easily manufactured. Manufacturers put several layers of paint on some of the trees. This is one factor that contributes in preventing decay. All it does though, is keep out the fungus that causes decay (mr– dt.com). The only agent of wood decay are fungi. Wood does deteriorate from insects, UV rays, and marine animals, but this is not actually decay. There are three types of decay; white, brown, and soft. You can tell the difference between them by looking at the color of the wood as it decays. White looks bleached, brown is of course a brown color, but soft can be either. In white rot the whitish color comes from ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 21. My Forest As I was tramping through the my forest in the midst of fall I wandered away from my normal route into thicker undergrowth. Suddenly I stumbled right into a clearing of lush moss with a towering old oak right in the middle and a small crevice running around it, and marvelous view of the sunrise. The place I had, by chance, wandered into was simply beautiful. So for this I named it Great Tree, the greatest place in my forest. My forest is a small three acre plot of beautiful woodland with a variety of tree species and a few secrets tucked away. The outer edge of almost any forest is quite thick and hard to break through so entrances are necessary, and my forest has three of them, one at the top one at the middle and another one right at the bottom. The top one is newest with some of the small trees still in a pile off to the side. The trail leading from the entrances curves a good amount because of a pile of large rocks and a long dead cedar tree. The trail quickly disappears because that area is rarely traveled and forgotten. The second trail is the most used one starting by an old weathered and scratched wooden swing. Then a few feet along a muddy walkway to a huge pointed flat stone with a portion of the tip broken. The last entrance is very old it is covered by a thin wall of tall undergrowth and hanging thrones yet when you slip through it there is a wide and flat trail leading to the Christmas Tree Grove, home of the spruce trees . This is what set this place aside from the other over cluttered and over priced campgrounds throughout this state. • 25. The Story Of The Chase : A Short Story : The Chase The Chase The sound of her alarm ringing in her ear was what woke her up so suddenly that morning. Emma knew that these next two days were going to be interesting. She was going to go camping with a group of three of her friends in the wilderness. Emma had golden hair which reminded people of the sun beaming on a hot summer day. Her eyes were blue like the ocean and her skin was pale like sand. As she was getting ready she could hear the thumping of her father's footsteps as he was climbing up the stairs. He opened the door to her room and hesitantly said, "Mom and I are waiting in the car, we are ready when you are." Emma could tell her parents were worried. This was the first time she was going to be away from her family this long. As soon as she finished gathering all her clothes and packed it all up, she could hear the honking from the car letting her know it was time to go. The car ride there was long and interesting. They passed by many tourist attractions such as the "Mall of America." Emma was really excited to finally get to go on this trip with her three best friends, Daniel, Jane, and Chris. They always ate lunch with each other at school and they basically did everything together. • 27. Plant Growth Of The Brassica Rapa Background There is a drought in California which is in turn affecting the number of crops that can be grown in a given amount of time. Farmers now must find a way to grow crops in an economical fashion while also maximizing each yield as much as possible. However, plant growth can be influenced by seed variety, the amount of water, the soil type, amount of light, etc., and many other variables. For this experiment, we are testing the growth of the Brassica rapa, a mustard plant under the same conditions of water, sunlight, and oxygen, with two different treatment solutions. There will be two pots, one has a treatment of just deionized water and the other a treatment of fertilizer as well as deionized water. Because the fertilizer has the added benefit of nitrogen, phosphorous, and potassium along with the same quantity of deionized water as the first pot, it is hypothesized that both sets of plants will grow, however the pot with fertilizer will grow more than the pot with just water treatment. In the Fertilizer Responses of Volunteer Longleaf Pine Trees within a Loblolly Pine Plantation: Separating Direct Effects from Competition Effects paper, an experiment on the effect of fertilization on two trees was done. Before the experiment was initiated, it was known that fertilization increases the growth and productivity of the loblolly pine tree, while it was hypothesized that the longleaf pine tree is less responsive to fertilization (Anderson, 2009). Plants are abundant throughout the Pine Barrens. The pine tree is the most typical, especially the pitcher pine. This is a pygmy pine tree only about ten feet. Other trees consist of pin oaks and cedar. Cedar trees and their roots are what make the water a brownish red color. One of the most popular plants is also their main crop. This plant is the blueberry and cranberry bushes. The Pinelands also have rare plants. The pitcher plant, for one is related to the Venus Fly Trap. This amazing plant traps flies by attracting them with a liquid which is like pollen located at the bottom of the pitcher. The wetlands are an amazing part of the pinelands. They prevent pollution from entering the lakes as well as preventing floods. This is a major part of the safety of the Pine Barrens. This is where the endangered Pine Barrens tree frog lives. On a clear night you can hear these frogs a mile away. They hang out on reeds and trees near the water. This forest is home to many other animals. For instance, there are cranes, water snake, turtles, salamanders, small pickerel and bass, and other frogs like spring peepers. • 33. Tundra Welty: A Short Story A devoid landscape lies ahead. The petite stream is the only guide, slithering nimbly on – almost like a snake. The clouds are mighty; they are too dense to see the holy, cerulean sky. Stretching up to try and touch this sky are monolithic towers, which overshadows anyone who passes. Moss clenches onto them, their humdrum green tops merging together. They are quite daunting: their lanky structure, over hanging ledges (that threaten to give way any moment) – everything about the wild stone pillars are awe striking, and great. Although the tundra land was intriguing, there was a lot more to see; meandering down the valley, the grass (which was once a luscious green) has begun to grow dead, and dry. • 43. Descriptive Essay It was our second day in Montana, and I was so excited to be going on a beautiful hike with my family. The roundtrip was about five miles there and back, and it is one of the most highly rated and enjoyed hikes in Northern Montana. We figured there would be lots of other travelers, and the first part was crowded with people. But as intensity increased, the number of people decreased. We trekked up the steep incline on the first mountain, to the point where we were able to see into the valley far below us and the sky on the other side. In an instant, the warm and sunny Montana day turned windy and cool. As we gazed at the sky, we spotted an enormous storm that was moving our way quickly. As I observed our surroundings, I noticed that there was not a single soul in sight. We were a good ways into our expedition, so we chose to continue. The storm would catch up with us one way or another. The distant thunder became louder and louder as the storm neared us. Eventually, it was so loud that I thought it would deafen us. I got a whiff of something burning, and I realized that it was the smell of the lightning; the storm had caught up. We were now at the bottom of the hill, in the flat and open valley filled with long grasses and wildflowers. I felt the rain pouring down on my head, and it only became stronger. Our visibility became limited, but we were luckily able to make out the shape of some pine trees in the distance. I was agitated and losing hope at this point. My hair was ... • 47. Pine Trees of Georgia There are pine trees just about everywhere in Georgia. Pine trees have always been important resources to people in North America. Native Americans used pine trees as treatments for respiratory conditions and to build items such as canoes or buildings. Today, pine trees are one the most important timber sources in North America. Pine trees belong to a group of trees known as the conifers, meaning the trees have cones and needle–like or scale–like leaves. There are about seven very common types of pine trees found in Georgia that grow in several different environments from the Appalachian Mountains all the way to the coast. Over many years pine trees have adapted to these very diverse environments. The Eastern White Pine is found in Georgia through the mountains and the upper Piedmont. These types of pine trees grow best in moist areas, such as near a river, or in areas that have a lot of hardwood trees as well. They can be recognized by their leaves, which look like needles and grow in bundles of five. The Eastern White Pine is known as one of the largest pines in Georgia. Historically these trees grew to be up to 175 feet tall but now in recent years only grow to about 100 feet in height. This type of pine is also a rapid grower. An Eastern White pine can reach forty feet in about twenty years, which is relatively fast for a tree. Another type of pine tree found in Georgia is the Loblolly Pine. As you push the door open you hear an array of screeches and clicks. "Don't let the dog out!" Mother shouts before you walk out the door. Stepping off of the cement onto decorative stones, triangular and jagged, then onto the ground, you begin to acclimate to the temperature. Each step makes the same soft thunk as the first you heard. Your attention turns slightly to your right where you find there is a small, dirt path, barely noticeable behind the fingers of the shrubs and saplings on either side of it. Pushing aside some of the leafy, pliable branches in your way, you start down the path. Your lungs fill with a rich, earthy smell. A good smell. • 57. Longleaf Pinn Ecosystem Analysis The Pinus palustris, or more commonly referred to as longleaf pine trees, were once the dominant tree type in the Southeastern United States and has been further exterminated at about 97% of its original range (Frost 1995). When you think of fire, you typically will think of destruction, but with the right fire regime in certain ecosystems it can actually help the area become more successful. Due to the degradation of the longleaf pine forests, prescribed burning has become a necessary factor to keep the forests successful (Lavoie et al., 2014). The biodiversity of the longleaf pin ecosystem depends on a lot of rainfall, porous, sandy soils, and a cycle of fires (Greenberg, 2002). Longleaf pine trees have a tolerance of and ability to regenerate in a high frequency fire regime (Loudermilk et al., 2011). Once longleaf pines grow above the height most fires tend to be, they have a high survival chance where as if they were in the shrub state, then they would be burned from being exposed and lack of structure maturity. The hardwoods will stay in the shrub state unless the fire frequency decreases then the hardwoods will grow rapidly causing the longleaf pines to fight for nutrients more (Guerin, 1993). As well as helping the longleaf pines receive more nutrients, if you take away the hardwoods from the equation for wildfires, then the length of the time that the fire will be in the forest will diminish greatly. Fires do not affect the adult trees as much as the younger trees because they are more susceptible to the fires from being lower to the grounds or smaller (Boyer, 1993). Since most of the trees in the two forests that were measured on the UNCW campus were mature longleaf pines, the prescribed fires did not affect the trees as must as it would if the trees were ... Alternative Lumber Harvesting Methods Like Shelterwood The U.S. Lumber Industry is one of the largest industries in the U.S., employing more than 1.4 million people and producing products valued at more than $200 billion every year according to the USDA (2004). The US Forest Industry is unique in that their methods for harvesting lumber are closely scrutinized by private organizations, sectors of the U.S. government, as well as internally by the logging companies themselves. In many areas, old techniques and methods are being discarded and researchers are struggling to keep up. Forests of the Pacific Northwest have primarily been harvested with clear cutting systems. Clear cutting systems lead to many ecological issues such as poor aesthetics, habitat disturbance, increased streamflow, and soil erosion among others (Bliss 2000). Alternative lumber harvesting methods like Shelterwood (Matthews 1989) and Group Selection systems have been developed as different approaches to Silvicultural maintenance. The proposed benefits of these approaches as alternatives to clearcutting include; greater forest biodiversity, greater aesthetic quality, improved forest regeneration and greater future timber fields of that area.
