The strategy that I can use in my persuasive speech to get my audience's attention in the introduction
of my speech would be story telling. I have included this already by giving an example of a student
who made Dean's list 8 of 10 semesters. The semesters I didn't make Dean's list was my first two. I
went on to tell the audience how I work nonstop to get the best grades I can and my family and
social like is affected. After giving the audience some background I then tell them how I feel as
though I am being discriminated on based upon personal feelings from the instructor. I am hopeful
by telling them my story they will see how this type of discrimination can happen to anyone.
Connecting with my audience from the very beginning gives me a chance to convince them to see
the remainder of my speech from my point of view.

Robinson made the audience members feel relevant. They would feel as though they themselves
could make a noticeable impact. He instilled that in his audience by connecting them with himself. It
felt as if he himself was reaching out to help the audience. By the end of his speech, near everyone
in the stands had risen and the audience clapped thunderously. Robinson managed to create a
lovable persona during his speech and by doing so, invoked trust in the members of the audience,
trust that would have never existed otherwise if he was anyone else.
With all this, Robinson ends off quite strong with his conclusion. The audience is briefly reminded
again of the problems mentioned before in his speech. Once again, it's made to be easy to
understand and remember so that the those who attended the hearing that day will have a hard time
forgetting about it. It will remain ingrained within them so that they are constantly reminded of the
problems with which he described regarding schooling and a child's imagination. After going over
these problems, Robinson gives a call to action. He encourages the people there to help make a
change, to not squander the imaginations of children and to help reconstruct the foundation of our
educational systems.

Analysis of Sherry Turkle's "Can You Hear Me Now?" What will we be like if we continue to
develop intimate relationships with our devices? Will we be more connected than ever, or more
alienated? In "Can You Hear Me Now?", by Sherry Turkle, a professor of the social studies of
science and technology, argues that technology has made people more connected, but has also made
us more alienated from each other. How now, when in public people mostly want to be alone with
their personal networks, or devices. People used to talk to one other as they waited in line, or rode
on the bus or subway. Now we spend that downtime checking emails, responding to messages, or
scrolling through our social media feed. Turkle says, "People become alienated from their own
experience and anxious about watching a version of their lives scrolling along faster than they can
handle" (p. 508). Our devices are increasingly becoming a part of us, an extension of our mind.
Turkle does an amazing job at showing her case by stating evidence that is very relatable, along with
real life examples, and feelings that her audience has felt while dealing with their devices. While her
article remains clearly focused on how technology has connected us, but mostly on how it is making
us more alienated from each other, her argument suffers from some logical fallacies. For instance
she uses the appeal to sympathy in this part of her article by saying, "For those who are lonely yet
fearful of intimacy, online life provides environments where one can be a loner yet not alone, have
the illusion of companionship without the demands of sustained, intimate friendship"(507). Here she
is exploiting on our feelings, because most of us have felt lonely, and saying that now most people
go online to find that sense of company. Therefore, she's implying that we don't have to go out in
public to find someone to talk to, or even date now–a–days. There's this illusion of companionship
online, and it's even better because you don't deal with the demands you would in real life. Turkle
also uses card stacking frequently throughout her article, which is where one presents only the

Memphis Ted Rhetorical Analysis
I found Martin Rees TED talk on how the human race can prevent the end of the world to be quite
interesting. I believe he did something's very well but also believe he could have done some parts
different. From the very beginning of the speech he made it clear that he had background knowledge
on the topic and did a good job reminding the audience throughout the speech that he had
creditability with the topic. As a viewer this made me really listen and believe in what he was

He included a ton of information but lacked a visual aid. I believe by having a visual aid or multiple
visual aids it could have kept the audience intrigued and kept their attention on what he was
presenting. I found myself at multiple times during the speech getting distracted and forgetting what
he had just presented. With a visual aid I believe that could have been avoided. I also noticed that he
stayed in one spot for the whole speech and was reading from his notes almost the whole time.
Similar to the visual aid I believe he could have been more effective in getting his main points
across if he interacted with the audience more and showed more physical interest in the topic. I
believe Martin Rees could have also organized his presentation better to also be more effective.
What I mean by this is that at certain times during the presentation I found some of the information
he was stating didn't clearly reflect his thesis or main points, because of this it left the audience
distracted and took away from what he was trying to get

For any presentation, keeping the audience engaged is the number one priority. Over the course of
the semester we learned various techniques to engage with the audience and to keep them focused.
For example, asking the audience questions either during or after your presentation can be a good
way to make the audience feel involved. Asking for volunteers is another way to make your
audience feel important. These were some techniques that I liked to use during my presentations. I

The Diary of Esperanza Cordero Many people are familiar with the concept of a diary – that secret
little book you would keep hidden under your bed away from preying eyes. It's a tool many of us
may have used to chronically record our lives and inner thoughts, or simply as a means to vent anger
and pent up frustration. We think too fast, but understand so slowly. Writing serves as a way for us
to revisit and reminisce. James Joyce captured this in his novels by the way of stream of
consciousness, putting everything but the kitchen sink on the page. In The House on Mango Street,
Cisneros pours her stream of consciousness into the book through Esperanza as her narrative voice
to reflect the themes of the novel. By using this diary technique, Cisnero is able to chronicle the

accomplishments? Many people in this world have to hear of something horrible for it to occupy
their mind. In the Ted Talk by Julia Bacha, she explains that Palestinians and Israelis have been
using nonviolence to solve issues when the rest of the world has never known about it. One of the
main reasons that the world is blind to the use of nonviolence is because it isn't bad. Bacha tells the
audience that if more people pay attention to the use of nonviolence, it can be spread to other
situations. In one of her case studies, she enlightens the audience about a town called Budrus.
Budrus, a village near Israel, was going to lose 40% of its land due to a wall barrier to help sustain
violence between Israel and Palestine. In this situation violence could have been the easy solution;

A writer can relate to their audience in different ways, one of them can be pathos. Pathos is using an
emotional connection with the audience to better relate too. Michael Pollan's pathos in The
Omnivores Dilemma are shown in many forms such as, humor, nostalgia, and pessimistic. By doing

I think this piece could focus on other areas of the hiring process. They could have incorporated an
interview portion into the experiment. How does the interview effect whether or not someone
attractive can get hired at a competitive workplace? Can unattractive males get hired in team work
places? Do references in a resume help decide who gets hired in each work place even if they are
attractive?
The article interested me because I didn't think about the aspect of attractive men not being able to
get competitive work place jobs due to a manager being unaware of their own biases. I like that fact
that the article is short, has simple words so it's easily understandable, and has short descriptive
titles for each section. I think the author could have done more experiments and research to prove
that attractive men cannot get competitive jobs. There was a statement saying that attractive men are
held to a higher standard than that of unattractive men, they are able to make more money, and are
more likely to win over investors, but there is no research to prove these statements are true other
than stating that many studies have shown it to be true. I wasn't really able to connect to the piece

The author, Melissa Mae, explains the issue, along with the opposing sides, clearly. Mae begins the
essay by introducing the issue. She says the abuse of detainees at Abu Ghraib gained attention
around 2004. Americans became concerned when they found out the government was using torture
and were extremely upset about it. She states that people believed torture was being used as a part of
the government's "interrogation of war–on–terror detainees." Though she tells the readers what the
issue is, she never fully explains it. She only tells us that the essays she wrote about were written
around the time the debate was heating up. A positive trait about this essay is that she stated the
issue in the first paragraph.
Not only does Mae give examples from both sides, but she also includes many quotes that keep the

one writer, she also adds input from the other writer. Mae says, "Bagaric and Clarke, in their turn,

argument equally. The writer gives an interesting aspect to the essay. She makes her point clear to

There was a decline in the frequency in both of the conditions, but there was a greater decline in the
contiguous condition. Researchers found that the participants were less likely to reach their goal in
the contagious condition because that were too focused on the storyline in comparison to the
noncontagious condition in which the videos were split up and did not have enough significance.
The researchers found that even though the working memory model would suggest that one
should've had worse performance, the results were the opposite. And the participants could also still
understand the plot even though the scenes were mixed up. The difference was that they were less
emotionally engaged in the plot because it was not continuous like in the contiguous condition.
Implications of findings: I believe that the study can be applied to the limitation of working memory
as it applies the concept of filmmaking. Because the study found that the contiguous condition led
the participants to focus on the protagonist, it suggested that the flow of the storyline is of

emotional connection to the film. The order of the film in the study did not affect the participant's
ability to understand it but they were less likely to have that emotional connection to the protagonist

One day when he is walking his crush Victoria home, he asks for her hand in exchange for the
shooting star that had just flown overhead, she agrees and thus Tristran sets out into the land on the
other side of the wall, and he amazed by its splendor. After returning to Wall with his star, Tristran

instances where a confirmation bias leads to misconception. The author explains that confirmation
biases lead to humans disregarding all evidence that works against their belief system, and leads
humans to believe whatever we want to believe, engaging in self–deception. The author also
explains that there are both positives and negatives to self–deception, writing that when "dealing
with certain illnesses having positive thinking may actually be beneficial such as cancer", but in
other cases self–deception can have dire consequences, such as when smokers constantly tell
themselves that they could quit at anytime. The author also describes another side of the
confirmation bias in that it is counterintuitive to try to prove one's self wrong. I will use this article

Analysis Of Isabel Allende's 'Tales Of Passion'
Isabel Allende uses storytelling to depict real stories of women across the world being abused and
suppressed by men at a TEDTALK conference during her presentation "Tales of Passion". She does
this to educate her audience on how women are less empowered by using evidence of anecdotes
about women suffering abuse. For example, she tells the story of Rose Mapendo who was a prisoner
in the camp for Tutsi refugees in Congo. Allende illustrates how Mapendo's life in the prison camp
was petrifying for a mother protecting her child: "When the soldiers burst in her cell to rape her
oldest daughter, she grabs hold of her and refuses to let go, even when they hold a gun to her head".
As a result, Allende wants her audience to feel the fear that Mapendo felt during her experience at
the prison to develop her speech.
The main purpose of her speech was to inform her audience on the lives of women who are victims
of abuse and she expresss how fenimism can lead the change for women so they could be
empowered. For example, Allende said, "But not for most of our sisters in the rest of the world who

Strengths And Weaknesses Essay
Strengths – My main strengths are that I'm a pretty amiable guy and that I'm a pretty accessible and
easy to talk to individual. I have a genuine interest in people and their stories. Because of my age, I
have quite a few life experiences under my belt and can often relate to people simply because I
understand or have experienced a lot of the same things. In addition, I have a wide variety of interest
that is ever–expanding, I always enjoy learning new things and bring a considerable amount of
energy and enthusiasm to most of the activities I engage in.
Weaknesses – I have ADHD, and I have all the problems associated with ADHD. There are days that
I simply have a brain fog that doesn't allow me to function properly. I can get bored easily with
tedious tasks. My attention tends to wander quickly if I'm not able to relate to a particular topic. In
addition, my organizational skills are sometimes pretty weak. I do best in a highly structured
environment, where expectations are clear and guidelines are straightforward. If things are not clear,
I tend to suffer from 'paralysis by analysis' and I can't get things done if I'm not sure how to begin.
Opportunities – I have a particular set of skills that are unique to occupational therapy. My martial
arts training positions be uniquely to bring something new and different of value to typical
occupational therapy interventions. I may be able to use these skills to motivate clients in ways that
have not been previously tried. I'm especially interested in Pediatrics, although I think that anybody
can benefit from some of the unique martial arts perspectives I can provide. Occupational therapy

I recently read a research paper by Katherine Hayles on how our generation thinks and
concentrations in short bursts of energy. Growing up in our era of the mobile phone and the never
ending battle for consumers between Apple and Microsoft, I can say that we need to be informed
