Analysis Of Centennial Park Pond System
1. Introduction and objectives
Centennial Park has the largest freshwater wetland system in inner metropolitan area of Sydney. Its
ponds cover approximately 26 ha of area connected in a water flow system that acts as detention
basin for stormwater drainage during flood events (Centennial Parklands, ponds, 2016). Moreover,
these ponds provided the water as the Sydney's main source of drinking water from 1837. The park
provides an open area for families and kids to enjoy picnics and therefore the pond is required to
maintain its water quality and sustainable for the environment.
The report reviews the Centennial Park pond system; it acts as a performance around the outskirts of
the flood retention basin, and the report also reviews regarding full flood conservation and water
quality norm to find a potential problem in the system and is coming up with improvements.
2. Background
Flooding History: Historical records show that there were several flooding within the catchment
November 1984, January1991. For instance, driver Avenue was road flooded (Michael Wyk , 2016).
Water Pollution: From previous engineering reports, from early mid1990s, it was estimated that
blue–green algal blooms occurred in most of the ponds in the Centennial Park over several years
(Mal Brown, 2012).Due to the accumulation of the nutrients in the Musgrave Pond from the storm
water inflow, the nutrient enriched the water in the pond (Mal Brown, 2012).
There is no doubt that this situation deteriorates

The Natural Disasters
Tsunami is not just a single giant wave, it may even consist of ten or more waves which is then
termed as: "Tsunami Wave Train" . Tsunami possesses kinetic energy and a mass of water which can
cause devastation through kineticism and flooding. There is an international tsunami warning system
and certain regional tsunami warning systems are also in placed.
Pakistan is shielded to a greater extent from the Tsunami of the Pacific Ocean and Bay of Bengal
due to the Indian land mass, however, Tsunamis accruing in the Indian Ocean do effect us. In 1935 a
Tsunami struck the Pakistan coast killing nearly 4000 people.
Cyclone
Cyclone is basically a low atmospheric pressure region surrounded by high atmospheric pressure
due to which there are powerful winds accompanied by rain. These are normally found in the
tropical and temperate regions of the world. Cyclones are also known as Typhoons, Hurricanes and
Tornadoes. Cyclones are normally found in the sea and finish off in the sea, however, certain
cyclones intrude inland and cause death and destruction.
Pakistan has been lucky that Cyclones in this part of the world are not very frequent. This may have
in part to do with the makeup of the Arabian Sea. However, Cyclones which have occurred in the
past did cause considerable damage to the coastal areas affecting the livelihood of the people living
on the coast.
Flood
Flood is a state in which water level rises above normal along river banks and the coastal areas.

The Parasitic Life Revealed In Myth's 'Flood'
The Flood is a parasitic life form that believes it can stop all disputes by bringing all life together. I
chose this image because it depicts the part in the fictional story where the flood reveals its plans
and what it believes.
I believe that a monster is anything that impedes or causes any form of pain to others, be it physical,
or mental. The worst monsters are not simply evil. They believe in what they are doing, which
makes them even more ruthless to achieve their goal. In the works of fiction the flood strives to end
all war by making all join it. It believes that by doing this, everlasting peace will be brought upon all
life. The flood states "I am a timeless chorus. Join your voice with mine, and sing victory
everlasting". It truly

The Purpose of the Biblical Flood narrative
The Old Testament can be described as "an anthology of the literature of ancient Israel and early
Judaism" (Coogen 2008) that contains many forms of writings and stories which address not only
myth, main historical events and laws, but also those that follow the Israelites unique relationship
with God. The first book of the Old Testament is known as Genesis, which is highly concerned with
the world's creation and its initial stages. It is also the origin of the biblical Flood Narrative
concerning Noah and the Ark. The story is characterised by a man that is instructed to build an ark
under the guidance of God, and take with him family members and pairs of animals, to survive a
catastrophic universal flood. "The flood narrative belongs ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net

Ea, a god that is unhappy with the idea of flooding the world, secretly instructs Utnapishtim to build
a boat and to take with him animals in order to survive the impending flood.
"Tear down the house and build a boat! Abandon wealth and seek living beings! Spurn all
possessions and keep alive living beings! Make all living things go up in the boat! The boat which
you are to build, its dimensions must be equal to each other:" (The Epic of Gilgamesh, Tablet XI).
Similarly God says to Noah; "I have determined to make an end of all flesh, for the earth is filled
with violence because of them; now I am going to destroy them along with the earth. Make yourself
and ark of cypress wood; make rooms in the ark, and cover it inside and out with pitch. This is how
you are to make it:" (Gen 6:13 – 15, NRSV). Later in the chapter God reveals to Noah; "For my part
I am going to bring a flood of water to the earth" (Gen 6:17, NRSV) and instructs Noah to bring into
the ark "of every living thing, of all flesh, you shall bring two of every kind into the ark, to keep
them alive with you:" (Gen 6:19, NRSV). Another example of the parallels within each story is the
description of everything being submerged by water. In the Epic of Gilgamesh it reads "The sea
calmed, fell still, the whirlwind (and) flood stopped up. I looked around all day long – quiet had set
in and all the human beings had turned to clay! The terrain was as flat as a roof." (The Epic of
Gilgamesh, Tablet XI). The

Essay On Decision Making
Caused by a controlled release of water, a boat rescue of one family in the neighborhood close to the
Barker reservoir found a distraught mother who made this statement: "They have to do what they
had to do." Accordingly, managers use six steps to decision–making to affect organizational
performance. Fundamentally, these six steps are especially critical as these decisions will affect
human lives. In Texas, August 2017, hurricane Harvey became a life–threatening, catastrophic event
as it dropped more than 30 inches of rain, as well as, forceful winds on the city of Houston and
surrounding coastal towns, within three days. So, this rare event presented a challenge for the Army
Corps of Engineers as the flooding caused structural ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
C. Do nothing and hope the dams do not break. However, this alternative will have devastating
effects on millions of Texans who are not already living within flood ravaged areas.
4. Among all the alternatives, I chose option B; a controlled release of water from the Barker and
Addicks dams to prevent flooding in the city of Houston and surrounding areas.
5. Implementing this plan requires that all people evacuate the areas affected by the release of water
from the levees, then, direct the controlled release towards those areas that are already flooded.
6. Establish a procedure for feedback from within and outside of the organization, including;
management, employees, local and federal officials, and residents. This procedure will include the
following important steps:
"Compare what actually happened to what was expected to happen as a result of the decision.
Explore why any expectations for the decision were not met.
Derive guidelines that will help in future decision making." (George & Jones, 2017, p. 174)
In the end, this decision–making process is one that places loss of life at the forefront of the most
important factors to consider. Ultimately, rather than risk a devastating dam break in the middle of
hurricane Harvey, the best alternative is to make a controlled release of water. Thus, after generating
possible alternatives, as well as, assessing each one for legal, ethical, economical, and practical
feasibility, I came

Biblical Explanations Regarding A Global Flood
The biblical passages regarding the flood make it clear that it was global. Genesis 7:11 states that
"all the springs of the great deep burst forth, and the floodgates of the heavens were opened."
Genesis 1:6–7 and 2:6 tell us that the pre–flood environment was much different from that which we
experience today. Based on these and other biblical descriptions, it is reasonably speculated that at
one time the earth was covered by some kind of water canopy. This canopy could have been a vapor
canopy, or it might have consisted of rings, somewhat like Saturn's ice rings. This, in combination
with a layer of water underground, released upon the land (Genesis 2:6) would have resulted in a
global flood. The clearest verses that show the extent of the flood are Genesis 7:19–23. Regarding
the waters, "They rose greatly on the earth, and all the high mountains under the entire heavens were
covered. The waters rose and covered the mountains to a depth of more than twenty feet. Every
living thing that moved on the earth perished–birds, livestock, wild animals, all the creatures that
swarm over the earth, and all mankind. Everything on dry land that had the breath of life in its
nostrils died. Every living thing on the face of the earth was wiped out; men and ... Show more

Also, if the flood was localized, why did God instruct Noah to build an ark instead of merely telling
Noah to move and causing the animals to migrate? And why did He instruct Noah to build an ark

not global, there would have been no need for an

(1995–2013) Finally, many evolutionists use the Grand Canyon as proof for millions of years, but
evidence shows it actually formed from the overspill from two post–Flood lakes. (Creation Today,
n.d.) Obviously, all of this evidence creates major problems for evolution, but is fully explained by
Noah's Flood. One of the biggest pieces of evidence for the Flood is the Cambrian explosion. The
Cambrian explosion is taught by evolutionist to be a sudden burst of evolution caused by an increase
in favorable environments. An evolutionist article states, "Fossils provide solid evidence that
organisms from the past are not the same as those found today; they show a progression of
evolution... The resulting fossil record tells the story of the past and shows the evolution of form
over millions of years. For example, scientists have recovered highly–detailed records showing the
evolution of humans and horses." (Evidence of Evolution, n.d.) In reality the fossil record shows
that there was a sudden and nearly simultaneous appearance of all known phyla as well as species
from the most distant parts of the family tree during the Cambrian period, instead of a gradual
evolution. (Wieland, n.d.) (Wise, 2009) Fossils have been found worldwide in Precambrian rocks,
but they were too bizarre and different

Management before the floods in Malaysia is based on the Standard Operating Procedure (SOP ) as

Biblical Flood Story Vs. Gilgamesh Flood
Biblical Flood Story versus Gilgamesh Flood Story The Biblical Flood story and the Gilgamesh
Flood story include similarities and differences. There are two versions we know of the flood story
in Babylonian literature, and both have different hero's in each, although the cause of each flood is
different. I will prove that I understand the task at hand by reading both of the stories, and taking it
apart piece by piece to understand it in a whole. By doing this, I am able to know what I am reading
and what the reading is trying to say. I will show how to sum up the ideology of the flood in the
different versions and understand how the biblical story has transformed the Gilgamesh myth in
meaningful ways. Stephanie Dalley enlightens that, "The Epic of Gilgamesh is the longest and
greatest literary composition written in cuneiform Akkadian" (39). It is an epic poem from ancient
Mesopotamia (2100 BC). Many scholars believe that the flood myth was added to the Tablet XI,
which was created in the 7th century BCE. This literary composition is considered an epic because
of the features that the heroic figure carries. The Epic is about a heroic quest for the fame and
immortality, "pursued by a man who has an enormous capacity for friendship, for endurance and
adventure, for joy and sorrow, a man of strength, and weakness who loses a unique opportunity the
epic provides for tracing earlier, independent folk–tales..." (Dalley 39). It was not clear for awhile if

The earth has been producing hazards for millennia these include earthquakes and volcanoes caused
by the movement of tectonic plates, and also wind and water elated disasters such as tornadoes and
tsunamis, these can be varied by a countries location such as suffering drought due to be land locked
or an island, also the relief on the land can contribute greatly to the hazards it faces.. All of these

Some natural hazards can be effected by the actions of humans, the deforestation of forests in
Indonesia is suspected to have contributed to the mudslides their, the resulting loss of life could be
blamed on illegal logging which had occurred. The flood risk of countries is also increased by the
urbanisation of land, the concrete and other impermeable surfaces used mean that water reaches
rivers faster which can cause the river to burst it's banks, this occurred in Berkshire and other urban
areas by the M4 which closely follows the route of the river Thames and its tributaries, this had

land. The Mississippi was straitened to be better for human usage the problem being that the river
returns to its original route when it is flooded or moving excess water, causing widespread damage

Comparing Gilgamesh And The Biblical Flood
For centuries skeptics have questioned the authenticity of a great flood that covered the Earth. First
mentioned in the Genesis account, a great flood has also been reported in other ancient writings such
as the story of The Epic Gilgamesh from the Sumerian civilization. Ever since the Gilgamesh text
finding in the mid–nineteenth century, questions have arisen about the connection these stories could
have with each other. The question is if one has historical truth and the other is based on it, or if both
stories were drawn from the same mythology. However, deeper comparison of Gilgamesh to the
Flood of Noah shows that it is extremely unlikely that the Biblical account of the flood is taken from
the Sumerian text. While the two narratives similarly depict a global flood, the contradicting details
of the stories and opposing world views indicate that the account of Noah is not reliant upon the
story of Gilgamesh. Due to this fact, the differences and similarities between the Epic of Gilgamesh
and biblical flood can be perceived by analyzing the plot details, the main hero, ... Show more

Genesis describes the Earth flooding for forty days and forty nights, along with the flood waters
from the deep covering the face of the Earth. Genesis 7:11 describes this phenomenon by saying
how, "all the springs of the great deep burst forth, and the floodgates of the heavens are opened"
(Gen. 7:11). There is a more significant amount of water being supplied to create the flood in
Genesis than there is during the six–day rain episode in the Epic of Gilgamesh. This would logically
allow the Earth to be fully covered in water. A simple 6–day rain is not able to cover the entire earth
that the devastating flood of the bible requires. In comparison to the biblical account, the epic seems

Mississippi River flood of 1993 would have been the impetus to energize our government to take the
steps to reform our aging flood control infrastructure. However, that was not the case and in 2004
Hurricane Katrina shined a spotlight on our out of date flood control infrastructure. Based on the
post–flood analysis of the hurricane the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers (USACE) found that the
entire system was precariously designed at best and that if one component failed it would
overwhelm the rest of the system causing a catastrophic failure of the flood controls. One thing the
USACE did really well was to create an Interagency Performance Evaluation Task Force (IPET),
which acted as an independent group to assist in the fact check of the results from the studies
conducted post Katrina. The increased focus on climate change, specifically the ebb and flow of the
rainy season in conjunction with how the flood control efforts can play into this is

The Flood of Noah and the Gilgamesh Flood
The Sumero–Babylonian version of the epic of Gilgamesh, after two and a half millennia of
dormancy, was resurrected by British archaeologists in the nineteenth century. Amid the rubble of an
Assyrian palace, the twelve clay tablets inscribed the adventures of the first hero of world literature
– King Gilgamesh, whose oral folk tales go back to at least 3000 years before Christ (Harris 1).
Tablet XI contains the story of the Flood. In this essay let us compare this flood account to the more
recent Noah's Flood account in Genesis of the Old Testament.

In Column 2 of Tablet 11 the Sumero–Babylonian Flood narrative continues with the measurements
and construction of the ark:
One acre was its whole floorspace; ten dozen cubits the height of each wall; ten dozen cubits its
deck, square on each side.
I [Utnapishtim] laid out the contours, drew it all.
I gave it six decks and divided it, thus, into seven parts.
Its innards I divided into nine parts.
I struck water–plugs into it.
I checked the poles and laid in all that was necessary.
I poured 24,000 gallons of bitumen into the kiln; the same amount I laid on the inside.
The basket–bearers brought on three shars of oil in addition to the shar of oil consumed in the seed–
meal and the two shars of oil stowed away by the boatman.(Gardner 231)
On the seventh day the ark was completed. It was launched, and then loaded with "all my kin and
family" and with "the animals of the fields." This ark has twice the number of floors as Noah's ark.
After the Jewish Old Testament establishes reasons for the Flood, then it proceeds with specific
building instructions to Noah in Genesis 6:14:
Make yourself an ark of gopher wood; make rooms in the ark, and cover it inside and out with pitch.
This is how you are to make it: the length of the ark three hundred cubits, its breadth fifty cubits,
and its height thirty cubits. Make a roof for the ark, and finish it to a cubit above; and set the door

A flash flood is a rapid flooding of geomorphic low–lying areas – washes, rivers, dry lakes and
basins. It may be caused by heavy rain associated with a storm, hurricane, or tropical storm or melt
water from ice or snow flowing over ice sheets or snowfields. Flash floods can also occur after the
collapse of a natural ice or debris dam, or a human structure such as a man–made dam, as occurred
before the Johnstown Flood of 1889. Flash floods are distinguished from a regular flood by a
timescale less than six hours. The temporary availability of water is often utilized by plants with
rapid germination and short growth cycle, and by specially adapted animal life.

(39.1 inches) which lashed the metropolis on 26 July 2005, and intermittently continued for the next
day. 644 mm (25.4 inches) was received within the 12–hr period between 8am and 8pm. Torrential
rainfall continued for the next week. The highest 24–hour period in India was 1,168 mm (46.0
inches) in Aminidivi in the Union Territory of Lakshadweep on 6 May 2004 although some reports
suggest that it was a new Indian record. The previous record high rainfall in a 24–hour period for
Mumbai was 575 mm (22.6 inches) in 1974.
Other places to be severely affected were Raigad, Chiplun, Khed, Ratnagiri and Kalyan in
Maharashtra and the southern state of Goa.
The rains slackened between the 28 July and 30 July but picked up in intensity on July 31. The
Maharashtra state government declared 27 and 28 as a state holiday for the affected regions. The
government also ordered all schools in the affected areas to close on August 1 and August 2.
Mumbai Police commissioner Anami Narayan Roy requested all residents to stay indoors as far as

Protecting Floodplains by Aaron Dante Mamiit
Protecting Floodplains by Aaron Dante Mamiit
Flooding is a constant issue faced by Metro Manila. Although there are times when flooding is
merely an inconvenient and annoying event, there are also times when it develops into something
much more frightening and dangerous.
But why is Metro Manila so badly plagued by floods anyway?
One of the reasons why Metro Manila constantly battles with the flood problem is because a large
part of it is situated on a floodplain.
What are floodplains?
Floodplains are landscapes that are formed when running water, often in streams and rivers,
transports eroded rock and other similar materials from their banks to a lower part of the Earth's
surface. At these lower parts, the flow of water slows down, and the rock and materials that the
water is carrying are dropped.
This leads to the creation of deposital landforms. One of these landforms is the floodplain.
Floodplains are nearly flat, hence the "plains" part of their name. The "flood" part, on the other
hand, should be pretty obvious – these floodplains are subject to periodic flooding.
What happens on floodplains?
Flooding occurs when water overflows from a stream or river. When the water levels become too
high, the water flows out of the stream channel and over the stream banks, submerging the adjacent
floodplain.
As water overflows, the material it carries – sediments such as sand, gravel, clay, and silt – are
deposited on the floodplain.
The larger particles are deposited first, closer

Gilgamesh Flood Vs Biblical Flood
Global floods have been a shared part of human culture and religion for thousands of years. A
majority of the global flood stories share the same basic framework which consists of a hero, a
means of salvation, and a blessing. The two most popular flood accounts are the Biblical flood of
Noah and the Babylonian "Epic of Gilgamesh.". These two ancient flood accounts share various
topics and ideas throughout both storylines such as the reason for the flood, a warning that the flood
will happen, the use of birds, blessings from a god, and an offering given. However, neither
Christian scholars nor secular scholars can determine if the Biblical flood or the Epic of Gilgamesh
share a common link. The discovery of the "Epic of Gilgamesh" occurred ... Show more content on

there was going to be a massive flood to destroy all life. He was given direct instructions on how to

also instructed to bring is family and one or seven pairs of each animal in this warming (Genesis
6:19). Whereas, Utnapishtim was warned in a more mystical way. He was given a dream that
described a great flood that was to extinguish all living creatures, and was given instructions on how
and what size the boat needed to be. He was also told in his warning that he need to bring his family,

The Flood in the Epic of Gilgamesh and the Flood of Genesis
The Biblical book, Genesis, of the Old Testament contains an account of an historic Flood which has
never been equaled in intensity. Tablet 11of the Sumero–Babylonian version of the epic of
Gilgamesh also records a Flood quite expansive and quite devastating. Are they a record of the same
event?
E.A. Budge states in Babylonian Story of the Deluge and the Epic of Gilgamesh that the narration of
the Flood in Sumero–Babylonian records may simply be related to a local flood instead of a
worldwide Flood such as the Bible narrates:
It is not too much to assume that the original event commemorated in the Legend of the Deluge was
a serious and prolonged ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
According to Berossus, the deluge hero was the tenth Prediluvian king in Babylonia. Also in the
Sumerian inscription he is referred to as king; there he occupies also a priestly office, viz., that of
the administrator of the temple provisions of a certain god. In the Gilgamesh epic, Utnapishtim is
not invested with any royal power or entrusted with any priestly office; from it we learn simply that
he was a citizen of Shurippak (Tablet XI:23) and a man of considerable wealth (XI:70ff). (227)
There is no reason given by Utnapishtim for the deluge. On the contrary, the Judaic version of the
Flood in Genesis states in 6:5–8 a very clear, explicit reason for the Flood:
The Lord saw that the wickedness of man was great in the earth, and that very imagination of the
thoughts of his heart was only evil continually. And the Lord was sorry that he had made man on the
earth, and it grieved him to his heart. So the Lord said, "I will blot out man whom I have created
from the face of the ground, man and beast and creeping things and birds of the air, for I am sorry
that I have made them."
Likewise in Genesis 11:13 God gives a reason for the Flood:
And God said to Noah, "I have determined to make an end of all flesh; for the earth is filled with
violence through them; behold, I will destroy them with the earth.

Evidence for the Biblical Flood: The Grand Canyon
The final piece of evidence for a worldwide flood is the Grand Canyon. An article describing the
Grand Canyon states, "The general scientific consensus, updated at a 2010 conference, holds that the
Colorado River carved the Grand Canyon beginning 5 million to 6 million years ago."
(Zimmermann, 2013) However, it is obvious that the Colorado river could not have carved the
Grand Canyon. It is much too small to carve such an enormous monument, and it shows a surprising
lack of erosion for being millions of years old. (The Grand Canyon, n.d.) One problem with
evolutionists' theory is the numerous side canyons formed just as deep with no visible water source.
(Brown, 1995–2013) Also, why are there no other Grand Canyons around the world that were
created with larger and more powerful rivers? (Brown, 1995–2013) A massive amount of around
eight hundred cubic miles of sediments were excavated from the Grand Canyon, yet the Colorado
River's delta, the section at the mouth of the river where sediments eroded by the river are deposited,
contains less than one percent of this material. (Brown, 1995–2013) So where did it all go? A
worldwide flood is the most plausible explanation. As the crust buckled and shifted, the water from
the flood drained off of high levels into the ocean basins and any low places. (Brown, 1995–2013)
The Colorado Plateau was lifted around six thousand two hundred feet, carrying two large post–
Flood lakes with it, the Grand Lake and Hopi Lake. (Brown,

Other Factors Contributing to the Flood
The Arun and Sunkosi sub–catchments of the upper catchment area contribute to the intensity of
floods, with the former possessing highest surface runoff potential (Wakode et al., 2013). As the
Kosi River exits at the base of the mountain, the ability to transport sediment is dampened, leading
to deposition of sediment and aggradation (Kale, 2008). High silt content in the river was due to soil
erosion and landslides and the presence of narrow gorges (Wakode et al., 2013). The construction of
the eastern embankment increased aggradation on the western side of the river, making the
embankment vulnerable to breaching (Sinha, 2009). Furthermore, Chakraborty et al (2010) noted
that avulsion was more ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
They are more deadly than ordinary floods because they intensify the moment the dams and
embankments experience failures and breaches respectively (Singh and Kumar (2013); Singh and
Kumar, 2017). The high discharge of water from rivers can cause extensive damage to life and
property (Singh & Kumar, 2017), both of which include livestock, croplands and public utilities (i.e.
electricity, telephones, and roads) (Singh & Kumar, 2013). For instance, a lot of agricultural land
was rendered uncultivable because the flood had transported and deposited excess sediment
(Chakraborty et al., 2010).
Singh and Kumar (2013) noted that millions of people in India are affected by flash floods yearly. In
this regard, it can be deduced that countless people were displaced, many villages were flooded, and
Bihar's infrastructure was compromised (Kale, 2008). While there have been no reliable estimate of
deaths and loss of properties for the flood event, it can be said that "more than 30 million people
were affected" (Sinha, 2009). The 2008 flood was an "unprecedented human misery" due to
"increased population density" (Kale, 2008).
Short–term Solution Set in Motion
Sometime in January 2009, the breach in the eastern embankment was repaired (Sinha et al., 2013).
On the 26th of January 2009, the Kosi River returned to its former stream channel, with the river
being once again confined (Sinha, 2009), as if the flood had never

happening now with Government spending on trying to improve flood protection from climate

commissioned research on how sea–level rise can affect their communities, while North Carolina
banned the studies from informing coastal policies in 2012." There isn't an agreement in the U.S.
Government yet that more money needs to be spent on climate change. Surprisingly, New Jersey
Governor Chris Christie believes that climate change is a problem, but he doesn't think that climate
change affected the damage done by Hurricane Sandy (Haddon 1). This was a short article and I was
hoping for more from the title. I might use two parts of this article to describe the amount of changes
done to reduce the effects of climate change since Hurricane Sandy.

Katrina hit many southern cities. Louisiana, Texas, and Mississippi were all hit but the most damage
occurred in New Orleans. With the city mostly under sea level this presented much of the problem.
The majority of the city was flooded. More than $200 billion dollars in damages were estimated.
The loss of life, property, and business were devastating on New Orleans. This was the most costly
of all natural disasters in the United States of America in my lifetime. This natural disaster disturbed
the economic system of New Orleans, the labor markets around the U.S., and the individual
businesses in New Orleans. The trending effect was a loss of 100,000 jobs in ten months and almost
2.9 billion in wages were lost (Effects of Hurricane Katrina, 2012). The storm helped to crush New
Orleans and put a devastating effect on the economy of the U.S. Gas prices rose, product prices rose,
and the tourism rate in New Orleans went to zero. The port was unable to open, the colleges were
closed due to the devastation, and as I stated earlier tourism became null and void. The hurricane
brought social, economic, and morale parameters into play. New Orleans lost 95,000 jobs in the first
ten month after the hurricane (Effects of Hurricane Katrina, 2012). Unemployment became a
nightmare thus making living arrangement unbearable. Government agencies were having a hard

Comparing the Great Flood in Epic of Gilgamesh and the Biblical story of Noah's Ark Many of the
same ancient stories can be found in different cultures. Each story differs in a small way, but the
general idea remains synonymous. One story that is paralleled in several cultures is the legend of a
great flood. The epic of Gilgamesh resembles the Bible's story of Noah's Ark, but specific details
differ in several aspects. The story of Gilgamesh originates from twelve fire–hardened, mud tablets,
written in cuneiform, in the Mesopotamian culture from around 2500 B.C.E. It has been passed
down through generations for centuries, teaching obedience to gods. The story of Noah's Ark, found
in the Christian Bible, seems to do the ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Gilgamesh brought his family on the boat as well, but he also brought all the craftsmen that helped
to build it, (relg–studies). This is a huge difference between the stories. The craftsmen were an
added group that reproduced and passed on their skills. Noah only took his family, relying on God to
provide them with the necessary items that they could not produce. There were not any other people
on board. Therefore, the corruption of this world is thought to come from one of Noah's sons,
descending down through him. If Gilgamesh brought craftsmen on the boat, this is a new place to
lay the blame for today's violence. The next discrepancy lies in the amount of time it rained. Noah's
story emphasized rain for forty days and forty nights. The number forty also appears in several other
biblical stories. Gilgamesh's rainfall lasts for just six days and nights. However, the numerical
system of the Mesopotamians is based on the numbers six, ten, and sixty. So the story directly
relates to the numerical system of the time, (Lecture, 9/13/1999). Perhaps this number was adopted
because of its wide use. Upon the arrival on the mountain top, each man sent out a dove, which
returned because it found no place to land. Then, Gilgamesh sent out a swallow, which also
returned. When Gilgamesh sent out a raven, it did not return. He knew the raven had found a place
to land and food to live off of. So the

Essay on New Orleans Levees
For years now the discussions have arose about the levee systems in America and how some are not
safe and need to be replaced. This problem has been focused on the levee system in New Orleans.
Many engineers and other people have asked the question whether or not the present levee system in
New Orleans could withstand a huge wave or a direct hit from a powerful hurricane. These
questions were answered when Hurricane Katrina hit New Orleans as a Category 3 hurricane which
isn't even the most powerful. After the hurricane hit the levee system failed and there were many
breaches in the system, which lead to the flooding of most of the city. My question is what could
have been done to stop this disaster from happening and what now can be ... Show more content on

Back in the 1800's there were severe floods in New Orleans that displaced their residents more than
one. The floods occurred in 1816, 1823, and 1849. The levees back then were roughly in the same
places that the levees are during Katrina. During the 1849 flood, many residents' homes were
flooded for up to 40 days (Colten 3). In the same article, Colten also says, that almost 2,000 homes
and 12,000 residents were the ones displaced. "In response to this flood, like others before and after,
officials raised the levee height and thereby encouraged additional urbanization on the floodplain"
(Colten 3). So obviously over the years New Orleans has not learned and the tradegy will just keep
happening. It has happened countless times and still I can't stress it enough of how much New
Orleans hasn't learned by their mistakes. This is not opinion this is fact, it is written fact that the
same problem keeps occurring at the same place, the same way but different time after time. In
1915, another major hurricane hit New Orleans and over two meters of water was stuck in the
"bowl" levees built around the city. "This huge mass of water overwhelmed the NEW city pumps
and contributed to the damage of around 20,000 buildings" (Colten 3). And again in 1947 a major
hurricane hit New Orleans again and flooded fairly new Jefferson Parish, and after the storm the

Disaster, Characteristics And Management Stages Essay
Disaster Characteristics and Management Stages
The purpose of this paper is to examine a recent natural disaster. The number of natural disasters has
risen dramatically in the past two decades. Natural disasters are increasing exponentially and
creating expanding amounts of destruction each year. A recent natural disaster to examine is the
flooding in Louisiana August 2016. This paper will discuss the type of disaster, characteristics of the
disaster, and the application of disaster management stages.
Current Natural Disaster
The morning of August 13th, Baton Rouge and much of southern Louisiana were devastated by
extreme flooding after 20 inches of rain hit the area in a 48 hour period. Rescue teams are calling it
the worst natural disaster to strike the United States since Superstorm Sandy. This flood has
damaged 60,000 homes, leaving an estimated 30,000 people displaced from their homes (CNN,
2016). The federal government declared this a major disaster killing at least 13 people, flooding
thousands of homes, and prompting thousands of water rescues (The Weather Channel, 2016).
Type of Disaster
There are three different types of disasters, man–made, natural, or a combination of both (Nies &
McEwen, 2015). The flooding in Louisiana was a natural disaster. Unfortunately, in the past ten
years there has been a dramatic increase in the frequency and intensity of natural weather–related
disasters (Veenema et al., 2016). Flooding is most common in the United

Extreme Weather And Heat Waves
The first article or website that I explored was titled Extreme weather. It begins by stating that as the
world has warmed, it has triggered several other things in the earth's climate to be altered. It then
goes further into depth specifically naming the factors that have been changing due to the altering of
the climate. These factors include: heat waves, droughts, heavy downpours, floods, and lastly,
hurricanes (Extreme Weather, 2014).
Heat Waves In this section, a heat wave is referred to as "abnormally hot weather lasting days to
weeks". It further goes on to say that the recent number of heat waves have been steadily increasing
with numbers almost "triple the long–term average" (Extreme Weather, 2014). In this section it is
claimed that the droughts in Texas in the year 2011, and in the Midwest in the year of 2012, that
records were set for the highest monthly average temperatures to date (Extreme Weather, 2014).
A picture of a map is provided of the coast–to–coast 100 degree days in 2011, in conclusion, it is
observable that heat waves are on a steady increase.
Droughts A drought is described as an event that happens due to a rise in temperatures that leads to
an increased rate of evaporation, this even includes the loss of moisture through plant leaves
(Extreme Weather, 2014). This section on droughts states that as the soil dries out due to the increase
in heat, that it results in hotter soil and "adjacent air rather than evaporating its moisture" and that

Thailand has experienced flooding since ancient times, with the annual monsoons as the crucial
factor. This circumstance happened in case of flooding in 2011; there were five tropical monsoons
during 25th July 2011 – 16th January 2012 which originated from the northern region in August and
became severe in September which caused floods throughout the central region of Thailand of
approximately 14,241 Square Kilometers in November 2011. The afflicted area of flooding covered
65 provinces and killed 657 persons at that time. The case of Thailand flooding in 2011 drew
attention among scholars and communities towards finding improvements in regional watershed
management in the future. Basically, the perception towards water management in Thailand was
more concerned with the water scarcity issue in drought period rather than the issue of excessive
water in the monsoon period, and the perception in flood disaster relief was addressed as the social
welfare relief activity. As a result, the flood disaster management was concerned with a defensive
approach rather than an offensive approach. The aspect of multi–boundary management was stated
as one necessary factor in large–scale disaster management; there was no organization that could
deal with flood situation as a cross–jurisdiction organ in a professional way, although each
governmental organ and division had data and information related to the flood situation

My Passion In Music
My passion is music, and there isn't anything that beats it. I've always done it as a kid. I started off

Our band named Saluda formerly named Rescue Party grew up in high school together playing gigs

only band in our town, Spartanburg. Our very first gig was at this small bar with about 5 or 6 people
in the audience. Half of them weren't even listening but it was the first time we could say we made
money because of music, and that really got us motivated. We barely knew what we were doing
most of the time because we were just kids and had no knowledge about the live music scene. We
finally graduated and half of the band was in high school and the other half college. It made us
practice a lot less, but we grew a lot in our instruments. As I went through my first year in college I
became way more into the music. I was practicing 5 hours everyday on covers and originals. This
was making me grow so much as a musician.

Genesis of the Old Testament records a worldwide Flood early on in the history of human
civilization. Tablet 11of the Sumero–Babylonian version of the epic of Gilgamesh also records a
total Flood of the entire earth very early in mankind's development. Let's examine the two to
determine if one could be the basis for the other.

In the Gilgamesh epic, Utnapishtim is not invested with any royal power or entrusted with any
priestly office; from it we learn simply that he was a citizen of Shurippak (Tablet XI:23) and a man
of considerable wealth (XI:70ff). (227)
N.K. Sandars in the Introduction to his book, The Epic of Gilgamesh, sums up the involvement by
the pagan gods in the Sumero–Babylonian Flood narrative:
In the Gilgamesh flood Ishtar and Enlil are as usual the advocates of destruction. Ishtar speaks,
perhaps in her capacity as goddess of war, but Enlil prevails with his weapon of the storm. Only Ea,
in superior wisdom, either was not present, or being present was silent, and with his usual cunning
saw to it that at least one of the race of men should survive. (41)
Column 1 on Tablet 11 begins the Sumero–Babylonian Flood narrative (Gardner 226). The sage
Utnapishtim from Shurippak (100 miles south of Babylon), says:
The great gods stirred their hearts to make the Flood.
[. . .] Build an ark.
[. . .] Load the seed of every living thing into your ark,
the boat that you will build.
Let her measure be measured;
let her breadth and length be equal.
Cover it with a roof as the abyss is covered. (Gardner 226)

Flood in Genesis states in 6:5–8 a very clear, explicit reason for the

al., 2007, p10). After Katrina made landfall August 29th, several sections of the levee system
collapsed including levees protecting the Ninth Ward (Lalwani, et al., 2007, p10). The manmade
MRGO channel caused the problems it was predicted; the channel increased the power and the size
of the waves that destroyed many levees (Heerden, Kemp, Bea, Shaffer, Day, Morris, Fitzgerald,
and Milanes, 2009, p306). By early September, people were forcibly evacuated and the storm
displaced more than 1.5 million people (Lalwani, et al., 2007, p10). According to Lalwani, et al.
(2007, p10), "Katrina was the most destructive and costliest natural disaster in the history of the
United States," with an estimated $75 billion worth of damage. Months after the hurricane, 3,200
people were unaccounted for and many of the low–lying areas, most of which were poor and
minority neighborhoods, were still under water. People were stranded in their homes or at
evacuation centers without food or water. Those in charge did not supply those in need with aid in a
timely manner that is expected. According to Ripley, Bennett, Thomas, Calabresi, Donnelly,
Thompson, Tumulty, Waller, Zagorin, Chu, DeQuine, and Klarreich (2005), "The first 72 hours after
a disaster is the "golden" period. That is when victims should

Natural Disasters
Throughout history natural disasters have terrorised mankind. The problem with natural disasters is
humans cannot control them, they can create preventative measures and usually can find where the
disaster is going to happen but that is the extent of human's ability to control them. When creating
preventative measures there is always a budget in mind that keeps everything from being foolproof,
which makes large scale disasters sometimes make those preventive measures not enough to
completely stop them but only helps reduce cleanup time. In certain cases like large quantities of
rain that cause flooding the flood waters are directed towards dams that can hold a certain amount of
water before the dam breaks, at max capacity the dam must be opened in some cases causing more
flooding downstream causing for a longer cleanup time. In Nick Stockton's article "How Will
Huston Handle the Deluge Hurricane Harvey" from August 28, of 2017 in the online version of
Wired, he effectively uses logos to show how the project manager is handling rain control during
this natural disaster while also showing how casualties and property damage were minimized.
Stockton begins his piece with logic that shows how natural disasters can cause major damage.
Stockton explains that Hurricane Harvey, a category four hurricane that went through Houston,
Texas, had winds up to "130 miles per hour." This is relevant due to the fact that these winds can
pick things up and make them fly into buildings or

Comparing the Gilgamesh and Genesis Floods
The rendition of the historic, worldwide Flood recorded in Genesis of the Old Testament is similar
to the account recorded on Tablet 11of the Sumero–Babylonian version of the epic of Gilgamesh,
discovered in the 1800's by British archaeologists in Assyria. Let us compare the two in this essay.
Alexander Heidel in his book, The Gilgamesh Epic and Old Testament Parallels, provides a
background for the survivor of the Sumero–Babylonian Flood, Utnapishtim:
Utnapishtim was the son of Ubara–Tutu, the Otiartes, or, rather, Opartes of Berossus. According to
Berossus, the deluge hero was the tenth Prediluvian king in Babylonia. Also in the Sumerian
inscription he is referred ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
[. . .] Build an ark.
[. . .] Load the seed of every living thing into your ark,
the boat that you will build.
Let her measure be measured;
let her breadth and length be equal.
Cover it with a roof as the abyss is covered. (Gardner 226)
In Column 2 of Tablet 11 the Sumero–Babylonian Flood narrative continues with the measurements
and construction of the ark:
One acre was its whole floorspace; ten dozen cubits the height of each wall;
ten dozen cubits its deck, square on each side.
I [Utnapishtim] laid out the contours, drew it all.
I gave it six

Analysis Of Centennial Park Pond System

  • 1. Analysis Of Centennial Park Pond System 1. Introduction and objectives Centennial Park has the largest freshwater wetland system in inner metropolitan area of Sydney. Its ponds cover approximately 26 ha of area connected in a water flow system that acts as detention basin for stormwater drainage during flood events (Centennial Parklands, ponds, 2016). Moreover, these ponds provided the water as the Sydney's main source of drinking water from 1837. The park provides an open area for families and kids to enjoy picnics and therefore the pond is required to maintain its water quality and sustainable for the environment. The report reviews the Centennial Park pond system; it acts as a performance around the outskirts of the flood retention basin, and the report also reviews regarding full flood conservation and water quality norm to find a potential problem in the system and is coming up with improvements. 2. Background Flooding History: Historical records show that there were several flooding within the catchment November 1984, January1991. For instance, driver Avenue was road flooded (Michael Wyk , 2016). Water Pollution: From previous engineering reports, from early mid1990s, it was estimated that blue–green algal blooms occurred in most of the ponds in the Centennial Park over several years (Mal Brown, 2012).Due to the accumulation of the nutrients in the Musgrave Pond from the storm water inflow, the nutrient enriched the water in the pond (Mal Brown, 2012). There is no doubt that this situation deteriorates ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 3. The Natural Disasters Tsunami is not just a single giant wave, it may even consist of ten or more waves which is then termed as: "Tsunami Wave Train" . Tsunami possesses kinetic energy and a mass of water which can cause devastation through kineticism and flooding. There is an international tsunami warning system and certain regional tsunami warning systems are also in placed. Pakistan is shielded to a greater extent from the Tsunami of the Pacific Ocean and Bay of Bengal due to the Indian land mass, however, Tsunamis accruing in the Indian Ocean do effect us. In 1935 a Tsunami struck the Pakistan coast killing nearly 4000 people. Cyclone Cyclone is basically a low atmospheric pressure region surrounded by high atmospheric pressure due to which there are powerful winds accompanied by rain. These are normally found in the tropical and temperate regions of the world. Cyclones are also known as Typhoons, Hurricanes and Tornadoes. Cyclones are normally found in the sea and finish off in the sea, however, certain cyclones intrude inland and cause death and destruction. Pakistan has been lucky that Cyclones in this part of the world are not very frequent. This may have in part to do with the makeup of the Arabian Sea. However, Cyclones which have occurred in the past did cause considerable damage to the coastal areas affecting the livelihood of the people living on the coast. • 5. The Parasitic Life Revealed In Myth's 'Flood' The Flood is a parasitic life form that believes it can stop all disputes by bringing all life together. I chose this image because it depicts the part in the fictional story where the flood reveals its plans and what it believes. I believe that a monster is anything that impedes or causes any form of pain to others, be it physical, or mental. The worst monsters are not simply evil. They believe in what they are doing, which makes them even more ruthless to achieve their goal. In the works of fiction the flood strives to end all war by making all join it. It believes that by doing this, everlasting peace will be brought upon all life. The flood states "I am a timeless chorus. Join your voice with mine, and sing victory everlasting". It truly ... • 7. The Purpose of the Biblical Flood narrative The Old Testament can be described as "an anthology of the literature of ancient Israel and early Judaism" (Coogen 2008) that contains many forms of writings and stories which address not only myth, main historical events and laws, but also those that follow the Israelites unique relationship with God. The first book of the Old Testament is known as Genesis, which is highly concerned with the world's creation and its initial stages. It is also the origin of the biblical Flood Narrative concerning Noah and the Ark. The story is characterised by a man that is instructed to build an ark under the guidance of God, and take with him family members and pairs of animals, to survive a catastrophic universal flood. "The flood narrative belongs ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Ea, a god that is unhappy with the idea of flooding the world, secretly instructs Utnapishtim to build a boat and to take with him animals in order to survive the impending flood. "Tear down the house and build a boat! Abandon wealth and seek living beings! Spurn all possessions and keep alive living beings! Make all living things go up in the boat! The boat which you are to build, its dimensions must be equal to each other:" (The Epic of Gilgamesh, Tablet XI). Similarly God says to Noah; "I have determined to make an end of all flesh, for the earth is filled with violence because of them; now I am going to destroy them along with the earth. Make yourself and ark of cypress wood; make rooms in the ark, and cover it inside and out with pitch. This is how you are to make it:" (Gen 6:13 – 15, NRSV). Later in the chapter God reveals to Noah; "For my part I am going to bring a flood of water to the earth" (Gen 6:17, NRSV) and instructs Noah to bring into the ark "of every living thing, of all flesh, you shall bring two of every kind into the ark, to keep them alive with you:" (Gen 6:19, NRSV). Another example of the parallels within each story is the description of everything being submerged by water. In the Epic of Gilgamesh it reads "The sea calmed, fell still, the whirlwind (and) flood stopped up. I looked around all day long – quiet had set in and all the human beings had turned to clay! The terrain was as flat as a roof." (The Epic of Gilgamesh, Tablet XI). The ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 9. Essay On Decision Making Caused by a controlled release of water, a boat rescue of one family in the neighborhood close to the Barker reservoir found a distraught mother who made this statement: "They have to do what they had to do." Accordingly, managers use six steps to decision–making to affect organizational performance. Fundamentally, these six steps are especially critical as these decisions will affect human lives. In Texas, August 2017, hurricane Harvey became a life–threatening, catastrophic event as it dropped more than 30 inches of rain, as well as, forceful winds on the city of Houston and surrounding coastal towns, within three days. So, this rare event presented a challenge for the Army Corps of Engineers as the flooding caused structural ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... C. Do nothing and hope the dams do not break. However, this alternative will have devastating effects on millions of Texans who are not already living within flood ravaged areas. 4. Among all the alternatives, I chose option B; a controlled release of water from the Barker and Addicks dams to prevent flooding in the city of Houston and surrounding areas. 5. Implementing this plan requires that all people evacuate the areas affected by the release of water from the levees, then, direct the controlled release towards those areas that are already flooded. 6. Establish a procedure for feedback from within and outside of the organization, including; management, employees, local and federal officials, and residents. This procedure will include the following important steps: "Compare what actually happened to what was expected to happen as a result of the decision. Explore why any expectations for the decision were not met. Derive guidelines that will help in future decision making." (George & Jones, 2017, p. 174) In the end, this decision–making process is one that places loss of life at the forefront of the most important factors to consider. Ultimately, rather than risk a devastating dam break in the middle of hurricane Harvey, the best alternative is to make a controlled release of water. Thus, after generating possible alternatives, as well as, assessing each one for legal, ethical, economical, and practical feasibility, I came ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 11. Biblical Explanations Regarding A Global Flood The biblical passages regarding the flood make it clear that it was global. Genesis 7:11 states that "all the springs of the great deep burst forth, and the floodgates of the heavens were opened." Genesis 1:6–7 and 2:6 tell us that the pre–flood environment was much different from that which we experience today. Based on these and other biblical descriptions, it is reasonably speculated that at one time the earth was covered by some kind of water canopy. This canopy could have been a vapor canopy, or it might have consisted of rings, somewhat like Saturn's ice rings. This, in combination with a layer of water underground, released upon the land (Genesis 2:6) would have resulted in a global flood. The clearest verses that show the extent of the flood are Genesis 7:19–23. Regarding the waters, "They rose greatly on the earth, and all the high mountains under the entire heavens were covered. The waters rose and covered the mountains to a depth of more than twenty feet. Every living thing that moved on the earth perished–birds, livestock, wild animals, all the creatures that swarm over the earth, and all mankind. Obviously, all of this evidence creates major problems for evolution, but is fully explained by Noah's Flood. One of the biggest pieces of evidence for the Flood is the Cambrian explosion. The Cambrian explosion is taught by evolutionist to be a sudden burst of evolution caused by an increase in favorable environments. An evolutionist article states, "Fossils provide solid evidence that organisms from the past are not the same as those found today; they show a progression of evolution... The resulting fossil record tells the story of the past and shows the evolution of form over millions of years. For example, scientists have recovered highly–detailed records showing the evolution of humans and horses." (Evidence of Evolution, n.d.) In reality the fossil record shows that there was a sudden and nearly simultaneous appearance of all known phyla as well as species from the most distant parts of the family tree during the Cambrian period, instead of a gradual evolution. • 19. Biblical Flood Story Vs. Gilgamesh Flood Biblical Flood Story versus Gilgamesh Flood Story The Biblical Flood story and the Gilgamesh Flood story include similarities and differences. There are two versions we know of the flood story in Babylonian literature, and both have different hero's in each, although the cause of each flood is different. I will prove that I understand the task at hand by reading both of the stories, and taking it apart piece by piece to understand it in a whole. By doing this, I am able to know what I am reading and what the reading is trying to say. I will show how to sum up the ideology of the flood in the different versions and understand how the biblical story has transformed the Gilgamesh myth in meaningful ways. Stephanie Dalley enlightens that, "The Epic of Gilgamesh is the longest and greatest literary composition written in cuneiform Akkadian" (39). It is an epic poem from ancient Mesopotamia (2100 BC). Many scholars believe that the flood myth was added to the Tablet XI, which was created in the 7th century BCE. This literary composition is considered an epic because of the features that the heroic figure carries. The Epic is about a heroic quest for the fame and immortality, "pursued by a man who has an enormous capacity for friendship, for endurance and adventure, for joy and sorrow, a man of strength, and weakness who loses a unique opportunity the epic provides for tracing earlier, independent folk–tales..." (Dalley 39). It was not clear for awhile if the character, Gilgamesh ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 23. Comparing Gilgamesh And The Biblical Flood For centuries skeptics have questioned the authenticity of a great flood that covered the Earth. First mentioned in the Genesis account, a great flood has also been reported in other ancient writings such as the story of The Epic Gilgamesh from the Sumerian civilization. Ever since the Gilgamesh text finding in the mid–nineteenth century, questions have arisen about the connection these stories could have with each other. The question is if one has historical truth and the other is based on it, or if both stories were drawn from the same mythology. However, deeper comparison of Gilgamesh to the Flood of Noah shows that it is extremely unlikely that the Biblical account of the flood is taken from the Sumerian text. While the two narratives similarly depict a global flood, the contradicting details of the stories and opposing world views indicate that the account of Noah is not reliant upon the story of Gilgamesh. Due to this fact, the differences and similarities between the Epic of Gilgamesh and biblical flood can be perceived by analyzing the plot details, the main hero, ... Genesis 7:11 describes this phenomenon by saying how, "all the springs of the great deep burst forth, and the floodgates of the heavens are opened" (Gen. 7:11). There is a more significant amount of water being supplied to create the flood in Genesis than there is during the six–day rain episode in the Epic of Gilgamesh. This would logically allow the Earth to be fully covered in water. A simple 6–day rain is not able to cover the entire earth that the devastating flood of the bible requires. One would assume that the Great Mississippi River flood of 1993 would have been the impetus to energize our government to take the steps to reform our aging flood control infrastructure. However, that was not the case and in 2004 Hurricane Katrina shined a spotlight on our out of date flood control infrastructure. Based on the post–flood analysis of the hurricane the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers (USACE) found that the entire system was precariously designed at best and that if one component failed it would overwhelm the rest of the system causing a catastrophic failure of the flood controls. One thing the USACE did really well was to create an Interagency Performance Evaluation Task Force (IPET), which acted as an independent group to assist in the fact check of the results from the studies conducted post Katrina. The increased focus on climate change, specifically the ebb and flow of the rainy season in conjunction with how the flood control efforts can play into this is

The Flood of Noah and the Gilgamesh Flood The Sumero–Babylonian version of the epic of Gilgamesh, after two and a half millennia of dormancy, was resurrected by British archaeologists in the nineteenth century. Amid the rubble of an Assyrian palace, the twelve clay tablets inscribed the adventures of the first hero of world literature – King Gilgamesh, whose oral folk tales go back to at least 3000 years before Christ (Harris 1). Tablet XI contains the story of the Flood. In this essay let us compare this flood account to the more recent Noah's Flood account in Genesis of the Old Testament. The basket–bearers brought on three shars of oil in addition to the shar of oil consumed in the seed– meal and the two shars of oil stowed away by the boatman.(Gardner 231) On the seventh day the ark was completed. It was launched, and then loaded with "all my kin and family" and with "the animals of the fields." This ark has twice the number of floors as Noah's ark. After the Jewish Old Testament establishes reasons for the Flood, then it proceeds with specific building instructions to Noah in Genesis 6:14: Make yourself an ark of gopher wood; make rooms in the ark, and cover it inside and out with pitch. It may be caused by heavy rain associated with a storm, hurricane, or tropical storm or melt water from ice or snow flowing over ice sheets or snowfields. Flash floods can also occur after the collapse of a natural ice or debris dam, or a human structure such as a man–made dam, as occurred before the Johnstown Flood of 1889. • 32. Protecting Floodplains by Aaron Dante Mamiit Protecting Floodplains by Aaron Dante Mamiit Flooding is a constant issue faced by Metro Manila. Although there are times when flooding is merely an inconvenient and annoying event, there are also times when it develops into something much more frightening and dangerous. But why is Metro Manila so badly plagued by floods anyway? One of the reasons why Metro Manila constantly battles with the flood problem is because a large part of it is situated on a floodplain. What are floodplains? Floodplains are landscapes that are formed when running water, often in streams and rivers, transports eroded rock and other similar materials from their banks to a lower part of the Earth's surface. At these lower parts, the flow of water slows down, and the rock and materials that the water is carrying are dropped. This leads to the creation of deposital landforms. One of these landforms is the floodplain. Floodplains are nearly flat, hence the "plains" part of their name. The "flood" part, on the other hand, should be pretty obvious – these floodplains are subject to periodic flooding. What happens on floodplains? Flooding occurs when water overflows from a stream or river. When the water levels become too high, the water flows out of the stream channel and over the stream banks, submerging the adjacent floodplain. As water overflows, the material it carries – sediments such as sand, gravel, clay, and silt – are deposited on the floodplain. The larger particles are deposited first, closer ... These two ancient flood accounts share various topics and ideas throughout both storylines such as the reason for the flood, a warning that the flood will happen, the use of birds, blessings from a god, and an offering given. Tablet 11of the Sumero–Babylonian version of the epic of Gilgamesh also records a Flood quite expansive and quite devastating. Are they a record of the same event? E.A. Budge states in Babylonian Story of the Deluge and the Epic of Gilgamesh that the narration of the Flood in Sumero–Babylonian records may simply be related to a local flood instead of a worldwide Flood such as the Bible narrates: It is not too much to assume that the original event commemorated in the Legend of the Deluge was a serious and prolonged ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... According to Berossus, the deluge hero was the tenth Prediluvian king in Babylonia. Also in the Sumerian inscription he is referred to as king; there he occupies also a priestly office, viz., that of the administrator of the temple provisions of a certain god. In the Gilgamesh epic, Utnapishtim is not invested with any royal power or entrusted with any priestly office; from it we learn simply that he was a citizen of Shurippak (Tablet XI:23) and a man of considerable wealth (XI:70ff). (227) There is no reason given by Utnapishtim for the deluge. On the contrary, the Judaic version of the Flood in Genesis states in 6:5–8 a very clear, explicit reason for the Flood: The Lord saw that the wickedness of man was great in the earth, and that very imagination of the thoughts of his heart was only evil continually. And the Lord was sorry that he had made man on the earth, and it grieved him to his heart. So the Lord said, "I will blot out man whom I have created from the face of the ground, man and beast and creeping things and birds of the air, for I am sorry that I have made them." • 39. Evidence for the Biblical Flood: The Grand Canyon The final piece of evidence for a worldwide flood is the Grand Canyon. An article describing the Grand Canyon states, "The general scientific consensus, updated at a 2010 conference, holds that the Colorado River carved the Grand Canyon beginning 5 million to 6 million years ago." (Zimmermann, 2013) However, it is obvious that the Colorado river could not have carved the Grand Canyon. It is much too small to carve such an enormous monument, and it shows a surprising lack of erosion for being millions of years old. (The Grand Canyon, n.d.) One problem with evolutionists' theory is the numerous side canyons formed just as deep with no visible water source. (Brown, 1995–2013) Also, why are there no other Grand Canyons around the world that were created with larger and more powerful rivers? (Brown, 1995–2013) A massive amount of around eight hundred cubic miles of sediments were excavated from the Grand Canyon, yet the Colorado River's delta, the section at the mouth of the river where sediments eroded by the river are deposited, contains less than one percent of this material. (Brown, 1995–2013) So where did it all go? A worldwide flood is the most plausible explanation. As the crust buckled and shifted, the water from the flood drained off of high levels into the ocean basins and any low places. (Brown, 1995–2013) The Colorado Plateau was lifted around six thousand two hundred feet, carrying two large post– Flood lakes with it, the Grand Lake and Hopi Lake. (Brown, ... Flood Case Study Other Factors Contributing to the Flood The Arun and Sunkosi sub–catchments of the upper catchment area contribute to the intensity of floods, with the former possessing highest surface runoff potential (Wakode et al., 2013). As the Kosi River exits at the base of the mountain, the ability to transport sediment is dampened, leading to deposition of sediment and aggradation (Kale, 2008). High silt content in the river was due to soil erosion and landslides and the presence of narrow gorges (Wakode et al., 2013). The construction of the eastern embankment increased aggradation on the western side of the river, making the embankment vulnerable to breaching (Sinha, 2009). For instance, a lot of agricultural land was rendered uncultivable because the flood had transported and deposited excess sediment (Chakraborty et al., 2010). Singh and Kumar (2013) noted that millions of people in India are affected by flash floods yearly. In this regard, it can be deduced that countless people were displaced, many villages were flooded, and Bihar's infrastructure was compromised (Kale, 2008). The hurricane brought social, economic, and morale parameters into play. New Orleans lost 95,000 jobs in the first ten month after the hurricane (Effects of Hurricane Katrina, 2012). Unemployment became a nightmare thus making living arrangement unbearable. Government agencies were having a hard time keeping up with unemployment thus making many residents ... Comparing the Great Flood in Epic of Gilgamesh and the Biblical story of Noah's Ark Many of the same ancient stories can be found in different cultures. Each story differs in a small way, but the general idea remains synonymous. One story that is paralleled in several cultures is the legend of a great flood. The epic of Gilgamesh resembles the Bible's story of Noah's Ark, but specific details differ in several aspects. The story of Gilgamesh originates from twelve fire–hardened, mud tablets, written in cuneiform, in the Mesopotamian culture from around 2500 B.C.E. It has been passed down through generations for centuries, teaching obedience to gods. The story of Noah's Ark, found in the Christian Bible, seems to do the ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Gilgamesh brought his family on the boat as well, but he also brought all the craftsmen that helped to build it, (relg–studies). This is a huge difference between the stories. The craftsmen were an added group that reproduced and passed on their skills. Noah only took his family, relying on God to provide them with the necessary items that they could not produce. There were not any other people on board. Therefore, the corruption of this world is thought to come from one of Noah's sons, descending down through him. If Gilgamesh brought craftsmen on the boat, this is a new place to lay the blame for today's violence. The next discrepancy lies in the amount of time it rained. Noah's story emphasized rain for forty days and forty nights. The number forty also appears in several other biblical stories. Gilgamesh's rainfall lasts for just six days and nights. However, the numerical system of the Mesopotamians is based on the numbers six, ten, and sixty. So the story directly relates to the numerical system of the time, (Lecture, 9/13/1999). Perhaps this number was adopted because of its wide use. Upon the arrival on the mountain top, each man sent out a dove, which returned because it found no place to land. Then, Gilgamesh sent out a swallow, which also returned. When Gilgamesh sent out a raven, it did not return. He knew the raven had found a place to land and food to live off of. So the ... Yes, Arkansas Power and Light should not be held liable for damage to property cased by flooding where an easement existed. • 56. Essay on New Orleans Levees For years now the discussions have arose about the levee systems in America and how some are not safe and need to be replaced. This problem has been focused on the levee system in New Orleans. Many engineers and other people have asked the question whether or not the present levee system in New Orleans could withstand a huge wave or a direct hit from a powerful hurricane. These questions were answered when Hurricane Katrina hit New Orleans as a Category 3 hurricane which isn't even the most powerful. After the hurricane hit the levee system failed and there were many breaches in the system, which lead to the flooding of most of the city. My question is what could have been done to stop this disaster from happening and what now can be ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Back in the 1800's there were severe floods in New Orleans that displaced their residents more than one. The floods occurred in 1816, 1823, and 1849. The levees back then were roughly in the same places that the levees are during Katrina. During the 1849 flood, many residents' homes were flooded for up to 40 days (Colten 3). In the same article, Colten also says, that almost 2,000 homes and 12,000 residents were the ones displaced. "In response to this flood, like others before and after, officials raised the levee height and thereby encouraged additional urbanization on the floodplain" (Colten 3). So obviously over the years New Orleans has not learned and the tradegy will just keep happening. It has happened countless times and still I can't stress it enough of how much New Orleans hasn't learned by their mistakes. This is not opinion this is fact, it is written fact that the same problem keeps occurring at the same place, the same way but different time after time. In 1915, another major hurricane hit New Orleans and over two meters of water was stuck in the "bowl" levees built around the city. "This huge mass of water overwhelmed the NEW city pumps and contributed to the damage of around 20,000 buildings" (Colten 3). And again in 1947 a major hurricane hit New Orleans again and flooded fairly new Jefferson Parish, and after the storm the flood water didn't go back down again it pooled in the "bowl" of ... Cause Of Flooding In Texas And Oklahoma In May of 2015, a slow moving storm producing record amounts of rainfall and tornados caused flash floods across Texas and Oklahoma causing mass destruction and many causalities. Flooding in Texas and Oklahoma does not happen often in most areas. Some areas have not seen rainfall totals like what was seen in May for more than 50 years. The flooding in May of 2015 was the most widespread and record breaking. In some areas houses were ripped from their foundations. In Wimberley, Texas, a family was still in the house as it washed away, killing a mother and her two children. Trees were uprooted as well as lakes, rivers and creeks overflowed their banks. • 60. Disaster, Characteristics And Management Stages Essay Disaster Characteristics and Management Stages The purpose of this paper is to examine a recent natural disaster. The number of natural disasters has risen dramatically in the past two decades. Natural disasters are increasing exponentially and creating expanding amounts of destruction each year. A recent natural disaster to examine is the flooding in Louisiana August 2016. This paper will discuss the type of disaster, characteristics of the disaster, and the application of disaster management stages. Current Natural Disaster The morning of August 13th, Baton Rouge and much of southern Louisiana were devastated by extreme flooding after 20 inches of rain hit the area in a 48 hour period. Rescue teams are calling it the worst natural disaster to strike the United States since Superstorm Sandy. This flood has damaged 60,000 homes, leaving an estimated 30,000 people displaced from their homes (CNN, 2016). The federal government declared this a major disaster killing at least 13 people, flooding thousands of homes, and prompting thousands of water rescues (The Weather Channel, 2016). Type of Disaster There are three different types of disasters, man–made, natural, or a combination of both (Nies & McEwen, 2015). The flooding in Louisiana was a natural disaster. Unfortunately, in the past ten years there has been a dramatic increase in the frequency and intensity of natural weather–related disasters (Veenema et al., 2016). • 64. Extreme Weather And Heat Waves The first article or website that I explored was titled Extreme weather. It begins by stating that as the world has warmed, it has triggered several other things in the earth's climate to be altered. It then goes further into depth specifically naming the factors that have been changing due to the altering of the climate. These factors include: heat waves, droughts, heavy downpours, floods, and lastly, hurricanes (Extreme Weather, 2014). Heat Waves In this section, a heat wave is referred to as "abnormally hot weather lasting days to weeks". It further goes on to say that the recent number of heat waves have been steadily increasing with numbers almost "triple the long–term average" (Extreme Weather, 2014). In this section it is claimed that the droughts in Texas in the year 2011, and in the Midwest in the year of 2012, that records were set for the highest monthly average temperatures to date (Extreme Weather, 2014). A picture of a map is provided of the coast–to–coast 100 degree days in 2011, in conclusion, it is observable that heat waves are on a steady increase. Droughts A drought is described as an event that happens due to a rise in temperatures that leads to an increased rate of evaporation, this even includes the loss of moisture through plant leaves (Extreme Weather, 2014). This section on droughts states that as the soil dries out due to the increase in heat, that it results in hotter soil and "adjacent air rather than evaporating its moisture" and that this ... This circumstance happened in case of flooding in 2011; there were five tropical monsoons during 25th July 2011 – 16th January 2012 which originated from the northern region in August and became severe in September which caused floods throughout the central region of Thailand of approximately 14,241 Square Kilometers in November 2011. The afflicted area of flooding covered 65 provinces and killed 657 persons at that time. The case of Thailand flooding in 2011 drew attention among scholars and communities towards finding improvements in regional watershed management in the future. Basically, the perception towards water management in Thailand was more concerned with the water scarcity issue in drought period rather than the issue of excessive water in the monsoon period, and the perception in flood disaster relief was addressed as the social welfare relief activity. As a result, the flood disaster management was concerned with a defensive approach rather than an offensive approach. The aspect of multi–boundary management was stated as one necessary factor in large–scale disaster management; there was no organization that could deal with flood situation as a cross–jurisdiction organ in a professional way, although each governmental organ and division had data and information related to the flood situation ... I started off with guitar lessons at the age of 5 and just fell in love with the idea of putting your emotion through chords and melodies. Although I may not have been a pro, I still enjoyed it no matter what. Later on in my musical career, I realized a lot of music you create is all about owning what you do. And trials after trials made me the musician I am today. Our band named Saluda formerly named Rescue Party grew up in high school together playing gigs every other night at the town's bars. It wasn't that hard to get these gigs because we were really the only band in our town, Spartanburg. Our very first gig was at this small bar with about 5 or 6 people in the audience. Half of them weren't even listening but it was the first time we could say we made money because of music, and that really got us motivated. We barely knew what we were doing most of the time because we were just kids and had no knowledge about the live music scene. We finally graduated and half of the band was in high school and the other half college. It made us practice a lot less, but we grew a lot in our instruments. As I went through my first year in college I became way more into the music. I was practicing 5 hours everyday on covers and originals. This was making me grow so much as a musician. The Disaster Planning Or Management Although there were numerous predictions that a category 4 or 5 could hit New Orleans, very little disaster planning or management was accomplished before Katrina hit in August 2005 (Lalwani, et al., 2007, p10). After Katrina made landfall August 29th, several sections of the levee system collapsed including levees protecting the Ninth Ward (Lalwani, et al., 2007, p10). The manmade MRGO channel caused the problems it was predicted; the channel increased the power and the size of the waves that destroyed many levees (Heerden, Kemp, Bea, Shaffer, Day, Morris, Fitzgerald, and Milanes, 2009, p306). By early September, people were forcibly evacuated and the storm displaced more than 1.5 million people (Lalwani, et al., 2007, p10). According to Lalwani, et al. (2007, p10), "Katrina was the most destructive and costliest natural disaster in the history of the United States," with an estimated $75 billion worth of damage. Months after the hurricane, 3,200 people were unaccounted for and many of the low–lying areas, most of which were poor and minority neighborhoods, were still under water. People were stranded in their homes or at evacuation centers without food or water. Those in charge did not supply those in need with aid in a timely manner that is expected. • 79. Natural Disasters Throughout history natural disasters have terrorised mankind. The problem with natural disasters is humans cannot control them, they can create preventative measures and usually can find where the disaster is going to happen but that is the extent of human's ability to control them. When creating preventative measures there is always a budget in mind that keeps everything from being foolproof, which makes large scale disasters sometimes make those preventive measures not enough to completely stop them but only helps reduce cleanup time. In certain cases like large quantities of rain that cause flooding the flood waters are directed towards dams that can hold a certain amount of water before the dam breaks, at max capacity the dam must be opened in some cases causing more flooding downstream causing for a longer cleanup time. In Nick Stockton's article "How Will Huston Handle the Deluge Hurricane Harvey" from August 28, of 2017 in the online version of Wired, he effectively uses logos to show how the project manager is handling rain control during this natural disaster while also showing how casualties and property damage were minimized. Stockton begins his piece with logic that shows how natural disasters can cause major damage. Stockton explains that Hurricane Harvey, a category four hurricane that went through Houston, Texas, had winds up to "130 miles per hour." This is relevant due to the fact that these winds can pick things up and make them fly into buildings or ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Let us compare the two in this essay. Alexander Heidel in his book, The Gilgamesh Epic and Old Testament Parallels, provides a background for the survivor of the Sumero–Babylonian Flood, Utnapishtim: Utnapishtim was the son of Ubara–Tutu, the Otiartes, or, rather, Opartes of Berossus.
