2. Emphasizing - Meaning
Emphasizing means “to show or state that
something is very important or worth giving
attention, to make something more obvious.”
(Cambridge Advanced Learner’s Dictionary)
Emphasizing means “give special importance or
value to(something) in speaking or writing”
(Oxford Advanced Learner’s Dictionary)

Repetition of the last word of one line or clause to begin
next.
Example :
My conscience hath a thousand several tounges,
And every tongue brings in a several tale,
And every tale condemns me for a villain.”

Repetition of a word or phrase at the beginning of
successive clauses
Example :
“I want her to live. I want her to breathe. I want her to
aerobicize.”

8. Giving more space to central idea.
The more space one gives a topic, the more emphasis the
topic receives.

9. Place important information in short phrases/simple sentences
so that it will not have to compete with other information for
the readers attention.
This can be done by :
a) Careful choice of words
b) Use of strong words
c) Use of active voices
Example :
Harry ate six shrimp at dinner. (active)
At dinner, six shrimp were eaten by harry. (Passive)

10. USING ITALICS
Gives light emphasis. Use for sophisticated stressing of words.
Example :
The opera Vanessa is written by Samuel Barber.
UNDERLINING
More insistent. Works well for emphasis of complete phrase.
Underlining will bring attention.
Example :
Answer all the questions.

BOLDING
Is clearly visible when you first look at the whole page.
The emphasized text strongly stands out from the rest of the text.
SETTING SIZE
Bigger fonts stand out more and small fonts recede.
But beware of reducing readability by mixing font sizes too much.
UPPERCASE AND LOWERCASE
Uppercase characters are capital letters.
Lowercase characters are small letters.

Colour plays a vitally important role in the world in which we live.
Color can sway thinking, change actions, and cause reactions.
Colours communicate invisibly
Yellow – warm, exciting, happy
Blue – deep, peaceful, supernatural
Green – peace, stillness, nature
White – harmony, silence, cleanliness
Black – grief, dark, unknown
Red – glowing, confidence, alive
Orange – radiant, healthy, serious (Wassily
