Emphasizing - Meaning
 Emphasizing means “to show or state that
something is very important or worth giving
attention, to make something more obvious.”
(Cambridge Advanced Learner’s Dictionary)
 Emphasizing means “give special importance or
value to(something) in speaking or writing”
(Oxford Advanced Learner’s Dictionary)
2
NEED FOR EMPHASIZING
 To project core idea
 To make communication effective
To establish purpose
To ensure attention and retention
3
Tips For Emphasizing
 Use Italics, bold, underscores, color
etc.
 Don’t use in excess
 Use consistently to prevent readers
from being confused
4
TECHNIQUES OF EMPHASISING
5
Emphasizing by Position
Emphasizing by Repetition
Emphasizing by Space
Emphasizing by Sentence structure
Emphasizing by Mechanical means
 Beginnings and Endings carry more emphasis
 Place central idea in beginning and ending
 Emphasize these key ideas through sentence styles,
paragraph
EXAMPLE :
1) I can write letters much more quickly using a computer.
“The computer enables me to write letters much more
quickly”.
6
Emphasizing by Position
Emphasizing by Repetition
 Repetition of the last word of one line or clause to begin
next.
Example :
 My conscience hath a thousand several tounges,
And every tongue brings in a several tale,
And every tale condemns me for a villain.”
(William Shakespeare, Richard
III)
 Repetition of a word or phrase at the beginning of
successive clauses
Example :
 “I want her to live. I want her to breathe. I want her to
aerobicize.”
(Weird Science,1985) 7
 Giving more space to central idea.
 The more space one gives a topic, the more emphasis the
topic receives.
8
Emphasizing by Space
 Place important information in short phrases/simple sentences
so that it will not have to compete with other information for
the readers attention.
This can be done by :
a) Careful choice of words
b) Use of strong words
c) Use of active voices
Example :
Harry ate six shrimp at dinner. (active)
At dinner, six shrimp were eaten by harry. (Passive)
9
Emphasizing by Sentence
structure
USING ITALICS
Gives light emphasis. Use for sophisticated stressing of words.
Example :
The opera Vanessa is written by Samuel Barber.
UNDERLINING
More insistent. Works well for emphasis of complete phrase.
Underlining will bring attention.
Example :
Answer all the questions.
10
Emphasizing by Mechanical
means
Emphasizing by Mechanical means (contd....)
BOLDING
 Is clearly visible when you first look at the whole page.
 The emphasized text strongly stands out from the rest of the text.
SETTING SIZE
 Bigger fonts stand out more and small fonts recede.
 But beware of reducing readability by mixing font sizes too much.
UPPERCASE AND LOWERCASE
 Uppercase characters are capital letters.
 Lowercase characters are small letters.
Example :
pen – lowercase
PEN - Uppercase
11
Emphasizing by Mechanical means (contd....)
COLOUR
 Colour plays a vitally important role in the world in which we live.
Color can sway thinking, change actions, and cause reactions.
 Colours communicate invisibly
Yellow – warm, exciting, happy
Blue – deep, peaceful, supernatural
Green – peace, stillness, nature
White – harmony, silence, cleanliness
Black – grief, dark, unknown
Red – glowing, confidence, alive
Orange – radiant, healthy, serious (Wassily
Kandinsky)
12
CONCLUSION
In every writing project, a clear
plan,emphasizing and strong
knowledge of your audience will help
you make the most effective way to
communicate

Techniques of Emphasizing in written communication

  • 1. TECHNIQUES OF EMPHASIZING IN WRITTEN COMMUNICATION 1 PRESENTATION ON BY ROOPESH V. NAMBOODIRI ROLL NO.: 40 VISAKH A. ROLL NO.: 51 SAYOOJ V. P . ROLL NO.: 45
  • 2. Emphasizing - Meaning  Emphasizing means “to show or state that something is very important or worth giving attention, to make something more obvious.” (Cambridge Advanced Learner’s Dictionary)  Emphasizing means “give special importance or value to(something) in speaking or writing” (Oxford Advanced Learner’s Dictionary) 2
  • 3. NEED FOR EMPHASIZING  To project core idea  To make communication effective To establish purpose To ensure attention and retention 3
  • 4. Tips For Emphasizing  Use Italics, bold, underscores, color etc.  Don’t use in excess  Use consistently to prevent readers from being confused 4
  • 5. TECHNIQUES OF EMPHASISING 5 Emphasizing by Position Emphasizing by Repetition Emphasizing by Space Emphasizing by Sentence structure Emphasizing by Mechanical means
  • 6.  Beginnings and Endings carry more emphasis  Place central idea in beginning and ending  Emphasize these key ideas through sentence styles, paragraph EXAMPLE : 1) I can write letters much more quickly using a computer. “The computer enables me to write letters much more quickly”. 6 Emphasizing by Position
  • 7. Emphasizing by Repetition  Repetition of the last word of one line or clause to begin next. Example :  My conscience hath a thousand several tounges, And every tongue brings in a several tale, And every tale condemns me for a villain.” (William Shakespeare, Richard III)  Repetition of a word or phrase at the beginning of successive clauses Example :  “I want her to live. I want her to breathe. I want her to aerobicize.” (Weird Science,1985) 7
  • 8.  Giving more space to central idea.  The more space one gives a topic, the more emphasis the topic receives. 8 Emphasizing by Space
  • 9.  Place important information in short phrases/simple sentences so that it will not have to compete with other information for the readers attention. This can be done by : a) Careful choice of words b) Use of strong words c) Use of active voices Example : Harry ate six shrimp at dinner. (active) At dinner, six shrimp were eaten by harry. (Passive) 9 Emphasizing by Sentence structure
  • 10. USING ITALICS Gives light emphasis. Use for sophisticated stressing of words. Example : The opera Vanessa is written by Samuel Barber. UNDERLINING More insistent. Works well for emphasis of complete phrase. Underlining will bring attention. Example : Answer all the questions. 10 Emphasizing by Mechanical means
  • 11. Emphasizing by Mechanical means (contd....) BOLDING  Is clearly visible when you first look at the whole page.  The emphasized text strongly stands out from the rest of the text.
