6. WHAT IS TOURISM?
Defined as the practice of traveling to another place for leisure, recreation, relaxation,
education, or any purpose except employment.
Types of tourism based on the following:
Border-based travel movement
• Domestic tourism—traveling within the country borders, e.g. from a province to a
provincial destination
• International tourism—travel movement crossing national borders, e.g. from Philippines to
USA
Travel movement referenced on the location of the presenter of data
• Inbound tourism—inward travel movement, e.g. Americans visiting Philippines
• Outbound tourism—outward travel movement, e.g. Filipinos visiting USA
7. BENEFITS OF TOURISM
Tourism brings in foreign currency, attracts investments, creates jobs, spawns and sustains livelihood
and businesses, stimulates infrastructure development in the countryside, helps to preserve natural
and cultural resources, and promote understanding among peoples
