Religion And Its Impact On Society
Even before there were millions of copies of bibles in circulation religion has been a part of society that has always been there. But is this idea of
rules and regulations enforced by a belief system really helpful to society? In a world without religion would there be less wars, hatred, and
discrimination? With so many people involved or affiliated with religion it is important to explore deeper into the negative impact that religion has on
society and try to make the world a better place with information that will help all. At a personal level religion fulfills the role of accounting for a
lack of knowledge and offering hope in the face of difficulties while also offering a sense of belonging. To identify with areligious ideology, and call it
the only truth and way, leads to the tremendously negative consequences of hatred, racism, and all kinds of violence. These consequences of a world
in disarray due to religion far outweigh the small personal fulfillments. As Steven Weinberg, an American physicist and Nobel laureate states, "With or
without religion, you would have good people doing good things and evil people doing evil things. But for good people to do evil things, that takes
religion." Although religion claims to lead people towards truth, light, and happiness, in reality it actually leads them in the opposite direction.
The most popular argument against religion in society is the fact that religion leads to war and violence which then in turn results in poverty,

Religion And Its Effect On Society
Religion plays a large role in today's society, it's used to comfort us in our greatest times of need as well as explain seemingly unknowable
questions, such as what is the meaning of life, why are we here, what happens when we die, why do we suffer but now as in the past religion can be a
harmful factor in our society. It has been the cause of wars, witch hunts, and proliferated superstition. Today there are such laws that allow a parent to
deny their child adequate medical care even if it's to treat a potentially life threatening illness. In other cases religion is cited as a reason to deny
someone access to birth control. In school's modern science is at times having to contend with creationism which seems to be a reinterpreting of
modern science and is in complete opposition with established facts. Other times such things as sex education is taught inaccurately which then
leaders to things such as high rates of teen pregnancies and STD's spreading. In other countries these actions are at times more extreme such as
when we hear about suicide bombings, honor killing, and the like. In this paper I will discuss a few of these topics that I find to be pertinent, yet
the topics are many. I will discuss the harms that such actions can cause to us as a society both socially and physically due to such harmful laws, I
will also discuss the social reasons as to why such actions are performed in the first place and why they may be found to be socially acceptable. Lastly

Religious Music And Its Influence On The Music Industry
Sometimes the question is raised should Christians or religious people listen to secular music or be entertained by television shows? Music has
always been a source of entertainment from the days of ole until today. Music is either spiritual or secular. Secular music can be defined as music that
does not have a biblical message; it instigates promiscuity, violence or any other possible harmful acts. Some say listening to secular music is harmless
because it doesn't influence your spirituality. The music you listen to should glorify God. Music in its original state was to please God in praise.
God had appointed an angelic being to be in charge of the music to sing songs of praise and worship. Some forms of secularism in the music
industry are the music director's desire for the praises and attention for himself or the words of the song have no spiritual tone to it. That same
angelic being was stripped of his position to play heavenly psalms, but he still possessed his craft. Some secularist behavior is through music. So the
music which was once the sound of praise filling the heavens was now a sound of praise that fills the earth and in some cases corrupting the minds of
the people. Some of the musicians of today sing of the devil. They have Satanic rituals before their concerts and during their concerts. Not all music
brings about corruption but it may promote promiscuity. The lyrics in some music, such as rock and roll and rap encourage violence,

Comparing Sam Cooke's The Difference Between Love And...
Love is a feeling coming from someone's heart to another person's soul; as gospel speaks from your soul to another's heart. Gospel songs and love
songs are always be compared to one another, despite they're actually one in the same. Music itself, are placed under a category by listeners, not just
by the label of whom makes the songs; all according to who you are singing to and what you are trying to relay your partner, friends, or family through
that music. What's the difference between the two and why can't you place them next to each other through music? It all depends on what the listeners
mind gets from the sound and the words, giving them a spiritual, loving guide.

Reflective Essay On Religion And Culture
Education is priority in schools across the United States, however, school sponsored athletics is a close second. Even in Christian schools where God
and education comes first, athletics are of importance. On October 6, 2017 at 4:30pm and 6pm, I attended St. Lorenz Lutheran 5th grade girls and boys
basketball games in Frankenmuth. There I observed the things that make up their cultural group and how sports played a role in their identity. These
things include their cultural setting, Christian identity, communication patterns, and their sports identity, as well as, the cultural meaning that each of
these themes have to the Lutheran cultural group. However, in all of these themes, it seems that their religious identity dominates and effects their
communication patterns and sports identity.

As I walked into the school, I was immediately welcomed with smiling faces and warm greetings from the ticket booth and people in line. Upon
entering the gym, I noticed the walls were painted yellow and white with a blue stripe of paint circling the gym to separate the two colors. On each
end of the gym there were blue and yellow mats under each basket to protect players from injury. These turned out to be their school colors I quickly
realized once I saw the home team's jerseys. Both the far wall and the center circle of the court had the school's mascot–the head of a Spartan. I also
noticed multiple banners. Three that had Bible verses on them, while the other three were

What Are The Differences Of Music Or Religious Music?
There exists a plethora of religions around the world that each have their own various sects, beliefs and sacred traditions. Nevertheless, most to all of
these religions retain the same ideas of the existence of higher beings that are omnipotent and omniscient. In order to worship these higher beings,
people that belong to a certain religion participate in rituals, religious holidays or perform traditional music that belongs to that religion. Music has the
power to control the emotions and thoughts of its listeners. Furthermore, religious music is able to initiate or deepen the spiritual connection between the
listener, performer, and the higher being regardless of sect. Can different genres of music that belong to various religions share similar musical or
spiritual elements? Three songs that are of distinct genres and religions indeed share the theological concepts of putting all of one's faith and trust in a
higher being, while seeking that entity for strength and refuge.
The summation of the stanzas in a particular contemporary Christian song represents a religious concept, specifically in the Christian tradition, where
in times of weakness or uncertainty, one must put all of their faith in God. "Oceans" by Hillsong United is simply a powerful story within itself,
where each stanza conveys a part of that story to its listeners. For example, the first stanza begins with the phrase, "You call me out upon the waters,
the great unknown where feet may fail." The person who

I gathered information from Terrence G by interacting and by asking series of questions. In addition, I asked his mother Nicole G questions that
Terrance did not know the answer to. The interview took place in the living room of their home Saturday afternoon. I spent an hour observing the
participant. Terrance is a 15 year old, American Black male. He is 5'9 ft tall in height, thin built, shadow facial hair above his lip. Also, he speaks
with a deep voice due to the changes that adolescence occur at that age. His hair was neatly trimmed and he was casually dressed in sweats and t–shirt.
During the observation, I noticed how well spoken and articulate he answered my questions. He gave eye to eye contact when answering questions.
He was confident but only gave short answers. He kept looking at the clock because he was ready to play his PlayStation. Terrence G. comes from a

In our society today large numbers of people practice some sort of religion. Realizing how many people inhabit the world today it's not hard to believe
that there are literally thousands of religions out there. Making a choice as to what religion you fit into can be a daunting task. Even if you already
practice a set religion sometimes its hard to know if you are putting your faith in the right hands so to speak. People get into a religion and they think
that their beliefs are right and everyone else's are wrong or twisted. Also people want the religion they are practicing to be the preferred religion of the
country or of the world. So from the beginning of history people have ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
This sets the scene, letting you know that you are probably looking at an American city. All around this building are other buildings almost as tall as
the center one if it weren't for the tower sitting on top of it. The other buildings all seem to be apartment buildings squeezed quite close together,
giving the impression that this is a rather large city. You can see the top of a street light from the point where it starts to bend in the lower right corner.
All around this picture there are people floating in the air around the city block. Most of them are floating in the sky above the buildings but some
are at the level of the building roofs and even lower. There are some people all the way down at the bottom of the picture around the height of the

Tartuffe, Religion Essay
The context surrounding the period in which Tartuffe was written in, the 17th Century is remembered as being a time of extreme power for the French
Monarchy. King Louis XIV and Cardinal Richelieu transformed France's feudal monarchy to an absolute monarchy. What must also be noted about this
time is the fact that the Catholic Church and Politicians had a great deal of power over authors and playwrights. In this time of social and religious
persecution, MoliГЁre created Tartuffe , a comedy dealing with hypocrisy and to a great extent, religion and how religion can be used in a negative
way, to mask sin. The play is known to be offensive towards the Catholic Church and religion in general. When it was first performed in 1664, it was

He is at the beginning of the play seen as a God like figure, particularly to Orgon and Madame Pernelle, by this he is strong and inspirational,
however, when he does realises he has been found out for being in the wrong, his persona changes to guilty and even vulnerable. This is shown in Act
III scene 6 when Damis accuses Tartuffe of trying to seduce Elmire, Tartuffe uses reverse psychology to win Orgon over by confessing the all things
awful, to an extent in which Orgon begins to sympathise with him. It is clearly shown that Tartuffe goes to the absolute extreme when he apologises to
Orgon;
Oui mon frГЁre, je suis un mГ©chant, un coupable,
Un malheureux pГ©cheur tout pleine iniquitГ©,
Les plus grand scГ©lГ©rat qui jamais ait Г©tГ©;
Chaque instant de ma vie est change de souillures;
Elle n'est qu'un amas de crimes et d'ordures;
Et je vois que le ciel, pour ma punition,
Me veut mortifier en cette occasion. The language used is extremely depressing, almost showing that it is out of character for Tartuffe to do such a
thing, he just feels that he should confess as he is under Orgon's roof and shouldn't make his son out to be a liar. This is what Orgon believes, and
although the audience knows differently, Damis is still asked to leave Orgon's house, showing Orgon, a very religious man, being completely
hypocritical, as he is undermining his family. Orgon

Gospel Music
By 1945, nearly everyone in the African American community had heard gospel music (2). At this time, gospel music was a sacred folk music with
origins in field hollers, work songs, slave songs, Baptist lining hymns, and Negro spirituals. These songs that influenced gospel music were adapted and
reworked into expressions of praise and thanks of the community. Although the harmonies were similar to those of the blues or hymns in that they
shared the same simplicity, the rhythm was much different. The rhythms often times had the music with... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

was a means of transcending the listeners, singers and entire congregation to a higher spiritual and emotional level. During the post–Civil War years,
the congregation style of singing was transformed by the new Pentecostal congregations, also known as Holiness and Sanctified. (5) African American

Australia 's Present Religious Tradition
Australia's Present Religious Landscape Christianity as the major religious tradition:
Christianity is the major religious tradition today and has been since around 1945. Many of the British who first came to Australia, either as convicts
or free settlers were Christians. They formed the huge base for Christianity to rise to the top religion in Australia before they began to let more
immigrants enter. In the 1947 census, 88% of the population (not including Aboriginals because they were not considered in the census) stated they
were Christian. The remaining 12% was mostly people who didn't respond to the question. Today not much has changed the percentage of Christians
has slightly decreased because of a rise in new religions. In the census of 2011 it is seen that out of 21.5 million people just under half, 42% classed
themselves as Christian and around 8% said they were of a different religion. The number of people who said they had no religion was hugely
increased at around 25%per cent. Today, even with the growing amount ofIslam Buddhism and Hinduism, Christianity still remains the major religious
tradition.
Immigration
Immigration has easily had the largest and most significant effect on Australia's religious landscape and has managed to see Australia become a vast
multi–cultural and religious community. Immigration has taken several years to make significant changes to the Australian religious landscape. After
the early settlers arrived and began to set up churches and

The Spiritual Revolution in America
"I'm spiritual but not religious." In today's society, it is a trendy phrase that many people often use to describe their belief that they do not need to be
affiliated with an organized religion in order to live a faithful and fulfilling life. As life becomes more frenzied and chaotic, people assert that they do
not have the time to engage in organized religious activity and turn to a different alternative, one that can be less limiting and narrow minded. While
spirituality means something different to everyone, at its core, spirituality provides our lives with context. It arrises from the connection one has with
themselves and one's search for meaning in life. Spirituality can take many different forms, such as meditation and yoga, ... Show more content on

And we provide them with a variety of options: Protestants, Catholic and a number of other choices. The group that we call religiously unaffiliated
consists of those who identify themselves as atheists, along with those who describe themselves as agnostics. And then the single largest part of the
religiously unaffiliated are people who say their religion is just nothing in particular" (NPR). Smith also mentions how many of the people who say
their religion is "just nothing in particular" are of a younger generation. Even pop music singer Pink says, "I love Native American spirituality and
paganism, and I've studied Buddhism. I think organized religion is one of the top problems of the world actually, so no, I'd say I steer clear of
religion and go straight towards spirituality" (BBC). The rise of this type of spirituality has been driven by a sense that religion is out of keeping with
modern values. People associate religious organizations with constraining doctrines that do not allow one to think for themselves. Others also view
religion as narrow–minded and prejudicial, stifling the growth of the human spirit. Or worse, some people contend that religion is the worst of all
evils, responsible for all the wars and conflicts around the world (the persecution of Jews, endless wars of religion, religious intolerance that leads to
terrorism...). Lastly, it would also be valid to say that

Gospel music was developed and inspired by the blues and jazz that was storming the country. Many traveling, singing preachers began to
accompany themselves with piano and guitar. An example of this can be found with a gentleman who many refer to as the "father of Gospel Music,"
Thomas A Dorsey. The son of a minister, Thomas Dorsey was a consummate musician and as a young man, he accompanied some of the most famous
blues singers of all time including Bessie Smith and Ma Rainey. He also arranged and composed blues tunes. However, his penchant for bouncy tunes
and bawdy lyrics did not keep him from attending the annual meeting of the National Baptist Convention. It was at these conventions that Dorsey first
heard compositions of Charles A Tindley. Tindley inspired him. Musical historian Arna Bontemps argues that it was at this point in Dorsey's life when
he began to write religious music. He abandoned his brash lyrics but not the jazz rhythms and blues flavor. Naturally, older conservatives considered
this blending of sacred music, such as spirituals and hymns with secular music, such as blues and jazz, to be "devil's music." They shunned it and
declared Dorsey's brand of gospel music unworthy of a hearing within sanctuaries of the day. The traditional church failed to see the positive influence

The Sovereignty And Goodness Of God
As time passes, the expectations that society has on women has changed. Many of these expectations had to be met for the woman to be 'complete'
with her role in society. In Rowlandson's time, her expectations were to be a housewife, a mother, and a religious follower. Rowlandson's, "The
sovereignty and Goodness of God" demonstrates the role she had when she was in the colonies and how that role changed as she became captive by
the Natives. From her writings, one can infer her place at home and how that changed as she became captive. It begins with her omission of the
soldier's failure to protect them from the Natives. While she writes about the horrendous death some soldiers receive, she does not mention much
about their courage to protect the colonist. This can only be inferred as she begins her writing with the attack. Although, she does not say what she
expected of the soldiers, her whole family stayed inside their home expecting to be saved and for the attack to come to an end. She as well as the
other women within the household were to take care of the children and the home. It is only when the fire over her head forces her to escape outside,
only to get shot and taken captive. This is demonstrated later on her writings in the fifth remove, "English army after them to this river, and saw the
smoke of their wigwams, and yet this river puts a stop to them. God did not give them courage or activity to go after us" (294). Therefore, showing the

gives gospel music different meanings. To most, gospel is simply thanks and praise and worship to the Lord. The establishment of gospel goes way
back with European and African roots. The first known use of "gospel" was in 1874 when a European songwriter named Philip P. Bliss titled a

A spiritual journey dominates these songs, but the concern for physical freedom is there as well. The most pervasive image in thespirituals is that of the
chosen people for the slaves believed that they had been chosen by God just as the Israelites had. They also believed that they understood better
than anyone what freedom truly meant in both a spiritual and physical sense. The Old Testament characters that the slaves referred to in their songs
experienced deliverance by God. The slaves believed that the same God that had granted them spiritual freedom would someday loose the chains of
slavery. The wonderful flexibility of the spirituals allowed for that double meaning of freedom. For example, Frederick Douglass claimed that the
line" I am bound for Canaan" in one of the songs he frequently sang meant that he was going North, not just that he would experience the freedom of
the promised land in a spiritual sense. The flexibility and multiplicity of meanings also allowed for slaves to use these sacred songs as secret
communication. Some songs, such as "Steal Away to Jesus," were used to call a secret meeting where the people could worship without the supervision
of the whites. Other songs, such as "Wade in the Water" served as coded directions for runaway slaves. With the eventual emancipation of the slaves,
religious music of African Americans became prominently

Religion In James Agee's A Death In The Family
Whether a person is religious or not, everyone has a different viewpoint on religion. Some people see religion as a helping hand, something that is
meant to do good. Others see it as a negative force used for "evil" and to cause harm. A lot of people have no opinion on the matter whatsoever. One
of the main themes in James Agee's novel is religion and the causes of it. In A Death in the Family, the characters are very set in stone with their
beliefs. While one character turns to their religion for comfort after a tragedy, another uses a person's lack of beliefs as a reason not to perform an act
for their family. Throughout Agee's novel, religion is used as a constructive force for some characters and destructive for other characters.

SPIRITUAL and GOSPEL MUSIC Everyday of our lives, at one point or another we listen to music. Music is a very important aspect of every
race, culture, or society. Music is not only entertaining, but it is also used to tell stories and express emotions. Spiritual and gospel music is a genre
that is meant to encourage the spirit of hope and provide a channel to practice your faith or to worship God. Early gospel can be traced back to
slavery. Jubilee songs and sorrow songs were born in the early 20th century. Thomas A. Dorsey (1899–1993), an African American, who became
known as "the father of gospel music", became the key figure in the development of gospel. Dorsey 's parents were both involved in the Baptist church.

Gospel singers and performers would travel along the "Gospel Highway", stopping at the churches and conventions where black believers gathered.
Gospel music began to gain wider audience after World War II. Dorsey gave credit to Charles Tindley, a dynamic preacher and songwriter, as a
major influence but it was Dorsey who held the movement together during its formative stage. Dorsey's gospel music, and songs became so popular
that they were often called "Dorseys". In 1933 he founded and became the President of the National Convention of Gospel Choirs and Choruses. He
also discovered the very talented singers Clara Ward and Mahalia Jackson. Dorsey would schedule and organize major tours and events. He contributed

Essay On African American Spirituals
African slaves in the United States created Christian songs called spirituals; the songs emphasized the hardships of slavery. Today, they are referred to
as Negro spirituals, Black spirituals, African American spirituals, church songs, jubilees, holy roller songs, and African American folk songs. The
African American spirituals originated from western and central African countries. The use of spirituals began in the 1500s, when Africans were taken
from their homelands and traditions to work as slaves in the New World. While in captive, slaves used their spirituals to pass times while working,
communicate without outsiders knowing, and most importantly to keep connected with their religious beliefs.
Before 1865 spirituals were known as "shouts". Hand clapping, foot tapping, and deep humming were usually involved in the "shouts" and the tunes
were closely related to those of hymns from the bible. African American spirituals sent messages of how to live by God. The lyrics of the spirituals

During the 1960s Civil Rights Movement for African Americans many spirituals like "We shall overcome", "Oh Freedom", and "This Little Light
Of Mine" were sung to boost moral and keep faith among the people. Other social issues that inspired new spirituals include lack of love, drugs, and
war. For special events words of traditional spirituals would be changed to coordinate, for example the words of "Joshua Fought the Battle of Jericho"
were changed to "Marching 'round Selma".
Also during this time, "pop gospel" was created. They very popular within local communities within the southern United States. Edwin Hawkins mainly
made this genre with songs like "Oh Happy Day". These types of spirituals usually resulted in the signers gathering in a choir and multiple instruments
were required to created the "soul" or "hard beat" of the

Religious Music Analysis: Old Rugged Cross By Loretta Lynn
Being one of the elder statesmen of this class I have been blessed to be able to have different forms of religious music effect my life. My Mother's
family was from the hills of Tennessee; to they taught me to appreciate the old standards. Personally I fell in love with four part harmony. I couldn't
quite explain what my fascination with that form of music, but I loved the harmonious sounds. When the tenor would hit into falsesetto and hit the high
"e" it was unbelievable.
The four songs that affected me the most was Old Rugged Cross by Loretta Lynn, I liked this because of two reasons. It had a deep meaning for me
and God, it reminds me of the music my Mother and Grandmother adored. Second was Amazing Grace (My chains are Gone) by Chris

Elizabeth 1
To the best of my understanding Elizabeth I and later the English Monarchs with regard to religious uniformity, believed in, and were in search of a

Elizabeth I in 1559 which was actually made up of two separate acts of Parliament, have in part created the religious freedoms we enjoy today. My
thesis would be that this religious uniformity would shape a lot of things that would come to pass later on in life, as Elizabeth I ideas and beliefs
would set a tone that would shape religion and the beliefs on how to worship that still go on this this current day. One of The act of Supremacy and the

The Integral Role of Religion Illustrated in Gabriel...
Religion plays an integral role in The Chronicle of a Death Foretold by Gabriel Garcia. It is generally considered by most readers that the initial
chapters don't consist of the religious and spiritual makeup of the townspeople but in fact, religion is subliminally present even earlier, within the title
of the novel itself. The word "Death" is integrally and inextricably linked with religious matter. After all, birth and the inevitably of death are the two
most important and debatable points in religion.
Religion is meant to be a solid force, helping society to bond better and progress in a civilized manner. For the same purpose, religion, with its laws
and codes of conduct, monitors peoples' way of life to ensure that humanity remains ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
First, Marquez underlines, "Both were exhausted from the barbarous work of death..." (49). Marquez exemplifies the way in which some aspects of
religion are ignored and some have great emphasis put on them. When Roman finds out that his new bride is not a virgin, he returns her. She is
beaten savagely, and her brothers are called from the brothel to come defend the family's honor. The hypocrisy of family is revealed as they consider
honor to be a part of the religion and instead of religiously and peacefully solve the manner, the brothers murder Santiago Nasar. The family believes
that upholding the honor is righteous, and in doing so the sin of murdering Nasar is downplayed. Furthermore, when the brothers put down their knives
in front of the priest, instead of giving them advice or condemning them, the priest "recalled the surrender as an act of dignity" (49). This is in total
conflict with Catholicism as it is amongst the Ten Commandments that "Thou shall not kill" and thus it illustrates that even the priest of the town has
lost the knowledge of the true religion. Marquez cements the corruption of religion as even father Amador protected the brothers and not only him but
"the lawyer stood by the thesis of homicide in legitimate defense of honor, which was upheld by the court in good faith" (48). Marquez continues to
demonstrate that the society was lenient on the brothers due to tradition and thus it illustrates that religion was only a minor

The Sparrow
The Sparrow, by Mary Doria Russell, is a story with so many odd and ironic twists that it can blind you from the philosophical ideas that Mary is
really trying to throw out there. With a group of people traveling on an asteroid on the quest to learn about alien life, it seems more like an action
packed science–fiction novel than a book with religious and moral issues. But Mary 's incredible skills as a storyteller forces readers to truly tests
their knowledge and beliefs. The main character, Emilio Sandoz, looks at the Stella Maris mission not only as a way to be the first to make contact
with alien life forms, but also as a quest to find God, since in his eyes, this amazing journey must be God showing him his purpose. Sofia Mendes, who

Emilio Sandoz is Jesuit priest, desperately trying to find his way towards God. Being a Jesuit, he is the member of the Roman Catholic religious order
or the Society of Jesus. He is part of the largest single religious order, devoted to the pope and ruled by its general who lives in Rome. Jesuit training
can last for more than 15 years. They spend 2 years in spiritual training, after which he takes the simple vows of the regulars – chastity, poverty and
obedience. Then as a scholastic, he spends 13 years and sometimes longer in study and teaching, completed by an additional year of spiritual training.
Emilio felt that becoming a Jesuit would create some good in his life. Before his training, his beliefs about God weren 't very concrete, but thought that
after the many years of dedication, he would eventually believe. As a middle–aged man, however, it turned out that he still had doubts. "If he could not
put his faith directly in God, who remained unknowable, he could place it in the structure of the Society and in his superiors – in D.W. Yarbrough and
in Father General da Silva" (Russell 111). He lacked any kind of revelation within his life at the time that took his mind into a greater spiritual place.

Holton We hear a lot of people using the phrase "more spiritual than religious" these days, causing us to ponder what they really mean when they label
themselves this way. It has been our experience that there really is a soul deepening difference between spiritual and religious –– a difference we have
termed spiritual emergence versus religious emergency. Spiritual emergence is a gradual unfoldment of spiritual expression that causes a minimal
'disturbance ' in our everyday functioning because we are somewhat prepared for it, given our disposition for the mystical. On the other hand, there are
those who experience what we call religious emergencies, which can cause significant disruptions in their everyday living, because these folks are
usually unprepared for mystical experiences since they consider themselves to be more religious than spiritual. Emergent spiritual experiences like
visions, deeply felt meditations, out–of–body experiences, apparitions and precognitive dreams are usually exhilarating and life–changing and can be

Religion Affects Daily Life
How does Religion Affect Daily Lives?
" The purpose of religion is to control yourself, not to criticise others."– Dalai Lama. Religion is not something people blindly follow for the hope of
reaching heaven. At one point or another in life, every person encounters the moment where they make the decision of being an active religious person,
a religious person but don't attend church, or don't believe in a superior power. Whether a person chooses option one, two, or three, each choice
brings consequences and a different life with that choice. People live a different kind of life, with different goals to reach, and what kind of life a
person may want to live. Religion has a profound effect on people's daily lives, and the areas it affects are work life, family life, and the standards a
person holds.
Work Life
It happens to everyone, people are at work (or school) and have a project due on Monday, but they see the clock ticking closer and closer to 5pm,
and have that urge to slip out a few mins early so they can get ahead of schedule on ordering the wings and pizza and getting good movie tickets. The
consequence of doing this is the person having to choose whether to finish the project on Saturday, Sunday, or if the person really wants to push it,
Monday morning. So what option are you going to take?
Work Smarter, Not Harder
Full time committed religious people know the regular weekend schedule. Saturday is the day to sleep in, cook some good breakfast, and take the kids

Hospitality: The Madonna Of 115th Street
Hospitality is defined as the friendly and generous reception and entertainment of guests, visitors, or strangers. Hospitality is something that can be
seen everywhere, regardless of geographical location, religion, etc. This initially sparked my interest because hospitality is something does not require
anything special to do. Everywhere a person goes, hospitality can be seen in some way, shape, or form.
The Madonna of 115th Street is an amazing example of hospitality throughout history. The excerpt details the days and nights of the Festa. On July
16th, the great bell in the campanile of the church of Our Lady of Mount Carmel announces that the festa had begun. This fetsa unites several Italian
communities from those in Connecticut, New Jersey, Pennsylvania, and California. Preparation for this festival can take weeks at a time, houses are
cleaned from head to toe in anticipation of housing relatives visiting from other states. For the next few weeks the community gathers together in the
streets and celebrates greatly from sunrise to sunset. Music, dancing, fires, festivals, everything is prominent in the streets as the Italian community
seeks to express itself. The festa is a time to come together and create a sense of community.Religious foundations, sharing of food, parades, all of this
signifies what it is to be a part of the Festa. Hospitality is creating a warm and welcome environment to those around you. Everything about the Festa
signifies these qualities.

What Is The HCC Hymnalism In Brazil?
Introduction
The HCC hymnal is one of the most well–known collection of sacred hymns adopted by several traditional Baptists churches in Brazil currently. One
could affirm that church music is always in a process of changing paradigms as observed in the history of the church. According to the history of church
music, religious music always had the power to influence a local community, and among Baptists in Brazil, it was not different. Researchers support the
idea that the growth of the Pentecostalism in Brazil during the late eighties could be one of the reasons for the reformulation of the main Brazilian
Baptist hymnal known as Cantor CristГЈo. However, the goal of this essay is to demonstrate that the HCC works as a tool to expand the Gospel ... Show

Similar to other Christian countries, Brazilian people tend to put the old traditions aside in some situations. In church music, the panorama could not
be different because several Brazilian Protestant churches do not accept the old music tradition but they always welcome the new music styles of
worship and congregational singing. This situation is similar to Stapert's understanding regarding old and new traditions at church. Stapert is a
Christian scholar and professor of music and in his book "A New Song for an Old World: Musical Thought in the Early Church.", he expresses his
passion for traditional and religious music values. However, he is not against the new music values but he praises the importance of the biblical
message in current Christian worship. One could say that this panorama is the result of the growing of the Neo– Pentecostal Protestant denominations
and the decrease of the traditional Protestant denominations. In spite of this current situation, many Baptist churches in Brazil adopts the Cantor
CristГЈo and the HCC currently. However, some renewed Baptist churches do not use them anymore because they believe those hymnals are not

The World Is The Best
As time elapses, ideas, thoughts, and view of the world tend to modify. I assume that the literature that is present from hundred years ago until now,
displays a shift of religion to nature. Religion used to be the basis for most of the things, but as new ideas approached, nature began to replace it. Not
implying that nature completely replaced religion, but it became a new way to understand the world. I believe there is always going to be a debate on
which way to understand the world is the best. Religious people would argue that the bible is the guide for lives and the way to control the world, but
on the other hand, science also tries to explain this idea. William Bradford, from 1590 to 1657, on his writing "Of Plymouth Plantation," ... Show more

How would it pleased God to see a person die in a desperate manner even if they had sin? God gives us life and would pardon our sins if we seek for
him. However, I believe the puritans, including Bradford, felt that there was no option of forgiveness. According to what I have read in Bradford's
story, I would say that religion could make someone selfish. I am not against religion, but this is what I conclude based on this literature. I feel
this way because it seems that they just think for themselves. They believe they are perfect and that anyone else is evil. I feel that being a religious
person, should not make them feel superior like the puritans did. I believe that in God's eye we are all the same, but the puritans saw the Native
Americans as savages and not pure. An example of this is in the "first encounter" the puritans had with the so called savages. "Thus it pleased God
to vanquish their enemies...and by his special providence so to dispose that not any of them were either hurt or hit..." (79) In my point of view, here
is a clear example of how they are being selfish. They are just worried about them not being hurt, but what about the savages? I feel that religion
means caring for everyone, but here I see the opposite of that. Again, how God would be pleased by an

Immigration And Cultural Identity
Whether fleeing violence, poverty, lack of opportunity, or answering a "divine" mandate of mission, leaving behind all that is familiar to settle in a
strange land is no simple adjustment to make. The existential reality of the immigrant is a "hyphenated identity" that celebrates and seeks to preserve
what is culturally familiar, while also seeking to adapt and adjust to a new host culture. Religious communities provide an important place for
immigrants to navigate these waters of identity, maintenance, and change, celebrating and sustaining the culture of origin while seeking to harmonize
within new cultural environs. This essay will explore ways in which religion provides immigrants with communities of shared experience and culture,
and how it fosters cross–cultural identities. It is intended to deepen the understanding of various ways culture is sustained, maintained, and changed
within diasporic religious communities. It seeks to address the following questions: how do religious groups affirm cultural heritage? How does
religion affirm variegated identities while, at the same time, amending and augmenting them? What role does religion play in sustaining and
amplifying cultural identities? This essay also seeks to uncover ways that Latino/a immigrants feel about and respond to the public discourse which
disparages the very identities they themselves seek to compose, sustain and celebrate. The conservative public discourse disparages Latino/as by

The Religious And Theological Dimensions Of Ralph Ellison...
M. Cooper Harriss's monograph, Ralph Ellison's Invisible Theology, brings into focus the religious and theological dimensions of Ralph Ellison's
authorship. Against reductive tendencies of materialist and secular accounts of racial identity, Harriss argues that Ellison's understanding of race,
characterized as an invisible theology in a secular age, makes possible a reconsideration of the relation between race, religion, and secularism. In order
to bring the religious aspects of racial life into view, Harriss proceeds along two lines: genealogically, he situates Ellison's writings in an array of
religious and theological contexts. These include, for example, attending to different genealogies of invisibility which inflect Ellison's own ... Show

Harriss's contention is not that racial formation in Ellison should be thought of as a religious instead of a secular concept; rather, it is that race is a
secular concept precisely because it is internally indivisible from religious antecedents (191). Given this network of connections, Harriss's book
belongs next to recent studies which explicate the dynamic crossings between race, religion, and secularism (e.g., Theodore Vial, Modern Religion,
Modern Race, Oxford University Press, 2016). Second, Invisible Theology marshals the resources of religious studies to foreground unappreciated
dimensions of literary texts. Harriss's book particularly stands with other studies engaging the neglected religious aspects of twentieth–century African
American literature (e.g., Josef Sorett, Spirit in the Dark: A Religious History of Racial Aesthetics, Oxford University Press, 2016). Harriss's distinctive
methodological points are noteworthy: naming the presence of religion and theology in Ellison's fiction does not depend on its belonging to a
confessional standpoint; instead, taking cues from the hermeneutical tradition which includes Schleiermacher, Geertz, and Tillich, Harriss means for
these characterizations to specify a negotiation of hyphenated and oppositional identities (say, racial and national), and the process

The Impact of Negro Spirituals on Today's Music
I believe that it would be difficult for someone to make the argument that Negro spirituals have not been influential in the field of music, much less the
realm of gospel music today. However, church members often do not make the time to reflect on the heritage of ahymn or song to realize the meaning
that the particular piece has carried with it through the decades, even centuries. With this in mind, I am going to look at the history of the Negro
spiritual and then at specific hymns in the 1991 Baptist Hymnal, published by Convention Press, to see just what impact the Negro spiritual has had on
today's church music. I believe that we will find that these songs have had a ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
At first, however, slaves were not using their music to glorify the God worshipped by their masters. Obviously, they had brought their religion with
them, one considered pagan and inappropriate by Christians in the American colonies. Christian missionaries were very disapproving regarding the
religious practices of the slaves, and they began to verbalize their disapproval and work to convert the new African slaves. Seventeenth century author
Morgan Godwin describes their religious practices thus: ". . . nothing is more barbarous, and contrary to Christianity, than their . . . Idolatrous Dances,
and Revels; in which they usually spend the Sunday . . . And here, that I may not be thought too rashly to impute Idolatry to their Dances, my
Conjecture is raised upon this ground . . . for that they use their Dances as a means to procure Rain: Some of them having been known to beg this
Liberty upon the Week Days, in order thereunto" (qtd. in Maultsby 3). Apparently, slave owners did not immediately set out to influence the religious
practices of their slaves; however, it would not be long before the masters began to insist that their slaves practice their religion, Christianity.
I have found very little regarding the reception of the Africans to Christianity; nevertheless, they were converted, and their music changed to

how to believe in God. Combined with this imbedded sense of self is the confidence Elsie gave her. Elsie not only understood
the word of the Lord and came from within the society Jeanette grew up in, she had a sense of the world around her, that the world didn?t start and

Difference Between Gospel And Gospel Music
It is interesting to see the many forms of vernacular in African American music. For years African Americans language has been developing from the
beginning of slavery till now. Spiritual and Gospel music are both example of genres that are similar and different but are both Vernacular. It is my best
interest to compare and contract both genres of music by studying their language, form of development, and rhythm flow. Spiritual music is religious
songs sung by African American slaves in the eighteen centuary. These songs where sung in the churches and during labor work in the plantation.

It is interesting to see the changes of concept and the changes in the language. Take for example from spiritual the song "God's a Gonna Trouble the
water" and gospel song "Down by the riverside". Both songs are obviously reference the waters in the south. Slaves where known for hidden
messages in their songs and God's a gonna trouble the water carries a message that plantation owners wouldn't understand. It warns children to escape
their freedom by walking in the waters with the guide of God. The song also portrays an old school language that we do not use in the gospel:
Wade in the water, children,
Wade in the water children,
Wade in the water, children,
God's a –gonna trouble the water.
The word wading is sung instead of walking in the water. With the phrase "a–gonna" instead of is going to. This type of language you will not find the
in gospel. The song "Down by the Riverside" have same meaning as the spiritual song. There is hardly any reference to God unlike the spiritual song
mentions the Israelites. There is reference to heaven or becoming one with god for example:
I'm gonna put on my long white robes

Religious Music Research Paper
Religious music is an important way of proclaiming the Christian message. There are many different types of religious music: psalm singing, gospel
music, black gospel music, and contemporary music. These types of religious share many things in common but take influences from different sources.
Psalm singing was established by the English Pilgrims and the Puritans that settled in Massachusetts. These groups waned communities where they
worship freely. Their worship included singing of metered and rhymed versions of the Psalms. Two methods of psalm singing were present during this
time: a formal style present in the more musically literate people, and a folk–like style present in the rural, small–town places. The formal style
involved learning hymns from notated music, while the folk style required learning songs by memory. Psalm singing was a major influence to
American religious music. Originally, gospel music meant hymns and songs containing text related to the first four books of the New Testament rather
than to the Psalms. This term came to include a large variety of hymns and songs. Gospel music became widely used in the early nineteenth century,
when preachers strated a massive revival for religion. The southern gospel music of the present day started from this tradition. The gospel ... Show more

Religion And Its Impact On Society

  • 1. Religion And Its Impact On Society Even before there were millions of copies of bibles in circulation religion has been a part of society that has always been there. But is this idea of rules and regulations enforced by a belief system really helpful to society? In a world without religion would there be less wars, hatred, and discrimination? With so many people involved or affiliated with religion it is important to explore deeper into the negative impact that religion has on society and try to make the world a better place with information that will help all. At a personal level religion fulfills the role of accounting for a lack of knowledge and offering hope in the face of difficulties while also offering a sense of belonging. To identify with areligious ideology, and call it the only truth and way, leads to the tremendously negative consequences of hatred, racism, and all kinds of violence. These consequences of a world in disarray due to religion far outweigh the small personal fulfillments. As Steven Weinberg, an American physicist and Nobel laureate states, "With or without religion, you would have good people doing good things and evil people doing evil things. But for good people to do evil things, that takes religion." Although religion claims to lead people towards truth, light, and happiness, in reality it actually leads them in the opposite direction. The most popular argument against religion in society is the fact that religion leads to war and violence which then in turn results in poverty, ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 2. Religion And Its Effect On Society Religion plays a large role in today's society, it's used to comfort us in our greatest times of need as well as explain seemingly unknowable questions, such as what is the meaning of life, why are we here, what happens when we die, why do we suffer but now as in the past religion can be a harmful factor in our society. It has been the cause of wars, witch hunts, and proliferated superstition. Today there are such laws that allow a parent to deny their child adequate medical care even if it's to treat a potentially life threatening illness. In other cases religion is cited as a reason to deny someone access to birth control. In school's modern science is at times having to contend with creationism which seems to be a reinterpreting of modern science and is in complete opposition with established facts. Other times such things as sex education is taught inaccurately which then leaders to things such as high rates of teen pregnancies and STD's spreading. In other countries these actions are at times more extreme such as when we hear about suicide bombings, honor killing, and the like. In this paper I will discuss a few of these topics that I find to be pertinent, yet the topics are many. I will discuss the harms that such actions can cause to us as a society both socially and physically due to such harmful laws, I will also discuss the social reasons as to why such actions are performed in the first place and why they may be found to be socially acceptable. Lastly I will speak ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 3. Religious Music And Its Influence On The Music Industry Sometimes the question is raised should Christians or religious people listen to secular music or be entertained by television shows? Music has always been a source of entertainment from the days of ole until today. Music is either spiritual or secular. Secular music can be defined as music that does not have a biblical message; it instigates promiscuity, violence or any other possible harmful acts. Some say listening to secular music is harmless because it doesn't influence your spirituality. The music you listen to should glorify God. Music in its original state was to please God in praise. God had appointed an angelic being to be in charge of the music to sing songs of praise and worship. Some forms of secularism in the music industry are the music director's desire for the praises and attention for himself or the words of the song have no spiritual tone to it. That same angelic being was stripped of his position to play heavenly psalms, but he still possessed his craft. Some secularist behavior is through music. So the music which was once the sound of praise filling the heavens was now a sound of praise that fills the earth and in some cases corrupting the minds of the people. Some of the musicians of today sing of the devil. They have Satanic rituals before their concerts and during their concerts. Not all music brings about corruption but it may promote promiscuity. The lyrics in some music, such as rock and roll and rap encourage violence, ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 4. Comparing Sam Cooke's The Difference Between Love And... Love is a feeling coming from someone's heart to another person's soul; as gospel speaks from your soul to another's heart. Gospel songs and love songs are always be compared to one another, despite they're actually one in the same. Music itself, are placed under a category by listeners, not just by the label of whom makes the songs; all according to who you are singing to and what you are trying to relay your partner, friends, or family through that music. What's the difference between the two and why can't you place them next to each other through music? It all depends on what the listeners mind gets from the sound and the words, giving them a spiritual, loving guide. There's criticism and contention on love songs being seen as gospel songs ... • 5. Reflective Essay On Religion And Culture Education is priority in schools across the United States, however, school sponsored athletics is a close second. Even in Christian schools where God and education comes first, athletics are of importance. On October 6, 2017 at 4:30pm and 6pm, I attended St. Lorenz Lutheran 5th grade girls and boys basketball games in Frankenmuth. There I observed the things that make up their cultural group and how sports played a role in their identity. These things include their cultural setting, Christian identity, communication patterns, and their sports identity, as well as, the cultural meaning that each of these themes have to the Lutheran cultural group. However, in all of these themes, it seems that their religious identity dominates and effects their communication patterns and sports identity. Cultural Site As I walked into the school, I was immediately welcomed with smiling faces and warm greetings from the ticket booth and people in line. Upon entering the gym, I noticed the walls were painted yellow and white with a blue stripe of paint circling the gym to separate the two colors. On each end of the gym there were blue and yellow mats under each basket to protect players from injury. These turned out to be their school colors I quickly realized once I saw the home team's jerseys. Both the far wall and the center circle of the court had the school's mascot–the head of a Spartan. I also noticed multiple banners. Three that had Bible verses on them, while the other three were ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 6. What Are The Differences Of Music Or Religious Music? There exists a plethora of religions around the world that each have their own various sects, beliefs and sacred traditions. Nevertheless, most to all of these religions retain the same ideas of the existence of higher beings that are omnipotent and omniscient. In order to worship these higher beings, people that belong to a certain religion participate in rituals, religious holidays or perform traditional music that belongs to that religion. Music has the power to control the emotions and thoughts of its listeners. Furthermore, religious music is able to initiate or deepen the spiritual connection between the listener, performer, and the higher being regardless of sect. Can different genres of music that belong to various religions share similar musical or spiritual elements? Three songs that are of distinct genres and religions indeed share the theological concepts of putting all of one's faith and trust in a higher being, while seeking that entity for strength and refuge. The summation of the stanzas in a particular contemporary Christian song represents a religious concept, specifically in the Christian tradition, where in times of weakness or uncertainty, one must put all of their faith in God. "Oceans" by Hillsong United is simply a powerful story within itself, where each stanza conveys a part of that story to its listeners. For example, the first stanza begins with the phrase, "You call me out upon the waters, the great unknown where feet may fail." The person who ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 7. Bedroom Observation Paper I gathered information from Terrence G by interacting and by asking series of questions. In addition, I asked his mother Nicole G questions that Terrance did not know the answer to. The interview took place in the living room of their home Saturday afternoon. I spent an hour observing the participant. Terrance is a 15 year old, American Black male. He is 5'9 ft tall in height, thin built, shadow facial hair above his lip. Also, he speaks with a deep voice due to the changes that adolescence occur at that age. His hair was neatly trimmed and he was casually dressed in sweats and t–shirt. During the observation, I noticed how well spoken and articulate he answered my questions. He gave eye to eye contact when answering questions. He was confident but only gave short answers. Analyzing an Advertisement for a Book of the Christian Faith Analyzing an Advertisement for a Book of the Christian Faith In our society today large numbers of people practice some sort of religion. Realizing how many people inhabit the world today it's not hard to believe that there are literally thousands of religions out there. Making a choice as to what religion you fit into can be a daunting task. Even if you already practice a set religion sometimes its hard to know if you are putting your faith in the right hands so to speak. People get into a religion and they think that their beliefs are right and everyone else's are wrong or twisted. • 9. Tartuffe, Religion Essay The context surrounding the period in which Tartuffe was written in, the 17th Century is remembered as being a time of extreme power for the French Monarchy. King Louis XIV and Cardinal Richelieu transformed France's feudal monarchy to an absolute monarchy. What must also be noted about this time is the fact that the Catholic Church and Politicians had a great deal of power over authors and playwrights. In this time of social and religious persecution, MoliГЁre created Tartuffe , a comedy dealing with hypocrisy and to a great extent, religion and how religion can be used in a negative way, to mask sin. The play is known to be offensive towards the Catholic Church and religion in general. When it was first performed in 1664, it was censored, ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... He is at the beginning of the play seen as a God like figure, particularly to Orgon and Madame Pernelle, by this he is strong and inspirational, however, when he does realises he has been found out for being in the wrong, his persona changes to guilty and even vulnerable. This is shown in Act III scene 6 when Damis accuses Tartuffe of trying to seduce Elmire, Tartuffe uses reverse psychology to win Orgon over by confessing the all things awful, to an extent in which Orgon begins to sympathise with him. It is clearly shown that Tartuffe goes to the absolute extreme when he apologises to Orgon; Oui mon frГЁre, je suis un mГ©chant, un coupable, Un malheureux pГ©cheur tout pleine iniquitГ©, Les plus grand scГ©lГ©rat qui jamais ait Г©tГ©; Chaque instant de ma vie est change de souillures; Elle n'est qu'un amas de crimes et d'ordures; Et je vois que le ciel, pour ma punition, Me veut mortifier en cette occasion. The language used is extremely depressing, almost showing that it is out of character for Tartuffe to do such a thing, he just feels that he should confess as he is under Orgon's roof and shouldn't make his son out to be a liar. This is what Orgon believes, and although the audience knows differently, Damis is still asked to leave Orgon's house, showing Orgon, a very religious man, being completely hypocritical, as he is undermining his family. At this time, gospel music was a sacred folk music with origins in field hollers, work songs, slave songs, Baptist lining hymns, and Negro spirituals. These songs that influenced gospel music were adapted and reworked into expressions of praise and thanks of the community. Many of the British who first came to Australia, either as convicts or free settlers were Christians. They formed the huge base for Christianity to rise to the top religion in Australia before they began to let more immigrants enter. In the 1947 census, 88% of the population (not including Aboriginals because they were not considered in the census) stated they were Christian. The remaining 12% was mostly people who didn't respond to the question. Today not much has changed the percentage of Christians has slightly decreased because of a rise in new religions. In the census of 2011 it is seen that out of 21.5 million people just under half, 42% classed themselves as Christian and around 8% said they were of a different religion. The number of people who said they had no religion was hugely increased at around 25%per cent. Today, even with the growing amount ofIslam Buddhism and Hinduism, Christianity still remains the major religious tradition. Immigration Immigration has easily had the largest and most significant effect on Australia's religious landscape and has managed to see Australia become a vast multi–cultural and religious community. • 13. The Spiritual Revolution in America "I'm spiritual but not religious." In today's society, it is a trendy phrase that many people often use to describe their belief that they do not need to be affiliated with an organized religion in order to live a faithful and fulfilling life. As life becomes more frenzied and chaotic, people assert that they do not have the time to engage in organized religious activity and turn to a different alternative, one that can be less limiting and narrow minded. While spirituality means something different to everyone, at its core, spirituality provides our lives with context. It arrises from the connection one has with themselves and one's search for meaning in life. Spirituality can take many different forms, such as meditation and yoga, ... The group that we call religiously unaffiliated consists of those who identify themselves as atheists, along with those who describe themselves as agnostics. Smith also mentions how many of the people who say their religion is "just nothing in particular" are of a younger generation. Even pop music singer Pink says, "I love Native American spirituality and paganism, and I've studied Buddhism. I think organized religion is one of the top problems of the world actually, so no, I'd say I steer clear of religion and go straight towards spirituality" (BBC). The rise of this type of spirituality has been driven by a sense that religion is out of keeping with modern values. People associate religious organizations with constraining doctrines that do not allow one to think for themselves. Others also view religion as narrow–minded and prejudicial, stifling the growth of the human spirit. Or worse, some people contend that religion is the worst of all evils, responsible for all the wars and conflicts around the world (the persecution of Jews, endless wars of religion, religious intolerance that leads to terrorism...). Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Gospel music was developed and inspired by the blues and jazz that was storming the country. Many traveling, singing preachers began to accompany themselves with piano and guitar. An example of this can be found with a gentleman who many refer to as the "father of Gospel Music," Thomas A Dorsey. The son of a minister, Thomas Dorsey was a consummate musician and as a young man, he accompanied some of the most famous blues singers of all time including Bessie Smith and Ma Rainey. He also arranged and composed blues tunes. However, his penchant for bouncy tunes and bawdy lyrics did not keep him from attending the annual meeting of the National Baptist Convention. It was at these conventions that Dorsey first heard compositions of Charles A Tindley. Tindley inspired him. Musical historian Arna Bontemps argues that it was at this point in Dorsey's life when he began to write religious music. He abandoned his brash lyrics but not the jazz rhythms and blues flavor. Naturally, older conservatives considered this blending of sacred music, such as spirituals and hymns with secular music, such as blues and jazz, to be "devil's music." They shunned it and declared Dorsey's brand of gospel music unworthy of a hearing within sanctuaries of the day. The traditional church failed to see the positive influence contemporary ... Many of these expectations had to be met for the woman to be 'complete' with her role in society. In Rowlandson's time, her expectations were to be a housewife, a mother, and a religious follower. Rowlandson's, "The sovereignty and Goodness of God" demonstrates the role she had when she was in the colonies and how that role changed as she became captive by the Natives. From her writings, one can infer her place at home and how that changed as she became captive. It begins with her omission of the soldier's failure to protect them from the Natives. While she writes about the horrendous death some soldiers receive, she does not mention much about their courage to protect the colonist. This can only be inferred as she begins her writing with the attack. Although, she does not say what she expected of the soldiers, her whole family stayed inside their home expecting to be saved and for the attack to come to an end. She as well as the other women within the household were to take care of the children and the home. It is only when the fire over her head forces her to escape outside, only to get shot and taken captive. This is demonstrated later on her writings in the fifth remove, "English army after them to this river, and saw the smoke of their wigwams, and yet this river puts a stop to them. God did not give them courage or activity to go after us" (294). Therefore, showing the incapability of the soldiers ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

The most pervasive image in thespirituals is that of the chosen people for the slaves believed that they had been chosen by God just as the Israelites had. They also believed that they understood better than anyone what freedom truly meant in both a spiritual and physical sense. The Old Testament characters that the slaves referred to in their songs experienced deliverance by God. The slaves believed that the same God that had granted them spiritual freedom would someday loose the chains of slavery. The wonderful flexibility of the spirituals allowed for that double meaning of freedom. For example, Frederick Douglass claimed that the line" I am bound for Canaan" in one of the songs he frequently sang meant that he was going North, not just that he would experience the freedom of the promised land in a spiritual sense. The flexibility and multiplicity of meanings also allowed for slaves to use these sacred songs as secret communication. Some songs, such as "Steal Away to Jesus," were used to call a secret meeting where the people could worship without the supervision of the whites. Other songs, such as "Wade in the Water" served as coded directions for runaway slaves. With the eventual emancipation of the slaves, religious music of African Americans became prominently ... Today, they are referred to as Negro spirituals, Black spirituals, African American spirituals, church songs, jubilees, holy roller songs, and African American folk songs. The African American spirituals originated from western and central African countries. The use of spirituals began in the 1500s, when Africans were taken from their homelands and traditions to work as slaves in the New World. While in captive, slaves used their spirituals to pass times while working, communicate without outsiders knowing, and most importantly to keep connected with their religious beliefs. The hypocrisy of family is revealed as they consider honor to be a part of the religion and instead of religiously and peacefully solve the manner, the brothers murder Santiago Nasar. Furthermore, when the brothers put down their knives in front of the priest, instead of giving them advice or condemning them, the priest "recalled the surrender as an act of dignity" (49). This is in total conflict with Catholicism as it is amongst the Ten Commandments that "Thou shall not kill" and thus it illustrates that even the priest of the town has lost the knowledge of the true religion. Marquez cements the corruption of religion as even father Amador protected the brothers and not only him but "the lawyer stood by the thesis of homicide in legitimate defense of honor, which was upheld by the court in good faith" (48). Spiritual emergence is a gradual unfoldment of spiritual expression that causes a minimal 'disturbance ' in our everyday functioning because we are somewhat prepared for it, given our disposition for the mystical. On the other hand, there are those who experience what we call religious emergencies, which can cause significant disruptions in their everyday living, because these folks are usually unprepared for mystical experiences since they consider themselves to be more religious than spiritual. Religion is not something people blindly follow for the hope of reaching heaven. At one point or another in life, every person encounters the moment where they make the decision of being an active religious person, a religious person but don't attend church, or don't believe in a superior power. Whether a person chooses option one, two, or three, each choice brings consequences and a different life with that choice. Everywhere a person goes, hospitality can be seen in some way, shape, or form. The Madonna of 115th Street is an amazing example of hospitality throughout history. The excerpt details the days and nights of the Festa. On July 16th, the great bell in the campanile of the church of Our Lady of Mount Carmel announces that the festa had begun. This fetsa unites several Italian communities from those in Connecticut, New Jersey, Pennsylvania, and California. Preparation for this festival can take weeks at a time, houses are cleaned from head to toe in anticipation of housing relatives visiting from other states. For the next few weeks the community gathers together in the streets and celebrates greatly from sunrise to sunset. Stapert is a Christian scholar and professor of music and in his book "A New Song for an Old World: Musical Thought in the Early Church.", he expresses his passion for traditional and religious music values. However, he is not against the new music values but he praises the importance of the biblical message in current Christian worship. One could say that this panorama is the result of the growing of the Neo– Pentecostal Protestant denominations and the decrease of the traditional Protestant denominations. In spite of this current situation, many Baptist churches in Brazil adopts the Cantor CristГЈo and the HCC currently. However, some renewed Baptist churches do not use them anymore because they believe those hymnals are not necessary in a worship ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 33. The World Is The Best As time elapses, ideas, thoughts, and view of the world tend to modify. I assume that the literature that is present from hundred years ago until now, displays a shift of religion to nature. Religion used to be the basis for most of the things, but as new ideas approached, nature began to replace it. Not implying that nature completely replaced religion, but it became a new way to understand the world. I believe there is always going to be a debate on which way to understand the world is the best. Religious people would argue that the bible is the guide for lives and the way to control the world, but on the other hand, science also tries to explain this idea. William Bradford, from 1590 to 1657, on his writing "Of Plymouth Plantation," ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... How would it pleased God to see a person die in a desperate manner even if they had sin? God gives us life and would pardon our sins if we seek for him. However, I believe the puritans, including Bradford, felt that there was no option of forgiveness. According to what I have read in Bradford's story, I would say that religion could make someone selfish. I am not against religion, but this is what I conclude based on this literature. I feel this way because it seems that they just think for themselves. They believe they are perfect and that anyone else is evil. I feel that being a religious person, should not make them feel superior like the puritans did. I believe that in God's eye we are all the same, but the puritans saw the Native Americans as savages and not pure. An example of this is in the "first encounter" the puritans had with the so called savages. "Thus it pleased God to vanquish their enemies...and by his special providence so to dispose that not any of them were either hurt or hit..." (79) In my point of view, here is a clear example of how they are being selfish. They are just worried about them not being hurt, but what about the savages? I feel that religion means caring for everyone, but here I see the opposite of that. Again, how God would be pleased by an ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 34. Immigration And Cultural Identity Whether fleeing violence, poverty, lack of opportunity, or answering a "divine" mandate of mission, leaving behind all that is familiar to settle in a strange land is no simple adjustment to make. The existential reality of the immigrant is a "hyphenated identity" that celebrates and seeks to preserve what is culturally familiar, while also seeking to adapt and adjust to a new host culture. Religious communities provide an important place for immigrants to navigate these waters of identity, maintenance, and change, celebrating and sustaining the culture of origin while seeking to harmonize within new cultural environs. This essay will explore ways in which religion provides immigrants with communities of shared experience and culture, and how it fosters cross–cultural identities. It is intended to deepen the understanding of various ways culture is sustained, maintained, and changed within diasporic religious communities. It seeks to address the following questions: how do religious groups affirm cultural heritage? How does religion affirm variegated identities while, at the same time, amending and augmenting them? What role does religion play in sustaining and amplifying cultural identities? This essay also seeks to uncover ways that Latino/a immigrants feel about and respond to the public discourse which disparages the very identities they themselves seek to compose, sustain and celebrate. The conservative public discourse disparages Latino/as by making wholesale claims ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 35. The Religious And Theological Dimensions Of Ralph Ellison... M. Cooper Harriss's monograph, Ralph Ellison's Invisible Theology, brings into focus the religious and theological dimensions of Ralph Ellison's authorship. Against reductive tendencies of materialist and secular accounts of racial identity, Harriss argues that Ellison's understanding of race, characterized as an invisible theology in a secular age, makes possible a reconsideration of the relation between race, religion, and secularism. In order to bring the religious aspects of racial life into view, Harriss proceeds along two lines: genealogically, he situates Ellison's writings in an array of religious and theological contexts. These include, for example, attending to different genealogies of invisibility which inflect Ellison's own ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Harriss's contention is not that racial formation in Ellison should be thought of as a religious instead of a secular concept; rather, it is that race is a secular concept precisely because it is internally indivisible from religious antecedents (191). Given this network of connections, Harriss's book belongs next to recent studies which explicate the dynamic crossings between race, religion, and secularism (e.g., Theodore Vial, Modern Religion, Modern Race, Oxford University Press, 2016). Second, Invisible Theology marshals the resources of religious studies to foreground unappreciated dimensions of literary texts. Harriss's book particularly stands with other studies engaging the neglected religious aspects of twentieth–century African American literature (e.g., Josef Sorett, Spirit in the Dark: A Religious History of Racial Aesthetics, Oxford University Press, 2016). Harriss's distinctive methodological points are noteworthy: naming the presence of religion and theology in Ellison's fiction does not depend on its belonging to a confessional standpoint; instead, taking cues from the hermeneutical tradition which includes Schleiermacher, Geertz, and Tillich, Harriss means for these characterizations to specify a negotiation of hyphenated and oppositional identities (say, racial and national), and the process ... • 36. The Impact of Negro Spirituals on Today's Music Essay The Impact of Negro Spirituals on Today's Music I believe that it would be difficult for someone to make the argument that Negro spirituals have not been influential in the field of music, much less the realm of gospel music today. However, church members often do not make the time to reflect on the heritage of ahymn or song to realize the meaning that the particular piece has carried with it through the decades, even centuries. With this in mind, I am going to look at the history of the Negro spiritual and then at specific hymns in the 1991 Baptist Hymnal, published by Convention Press, to see just what impact the Negro spiritual has had on today's church music. I believe that we will find that these songs have had a ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... At first, however, slaves were not using their music to glorify the God worshipped by their masters. Obviously, they had brought their religion with them, one considered pagan and inappropriate by Christians in the American colonies. Christian missionaries were very disapproving regarding the religious practices of the slaves, and they began to verbalize their disapproval and work to convert the new African slaves. Seventeenth century author Morgan Godwin describes their religious practices thus: ". . . nothing is more barbarous, and contrary to Christianity, than their . . . Idolatrous Dances, and Revels; in which they usually spend the Sunday . . . And here, that I may not be thought too rashly to impute Idolatry to their Dances, my Conjecture is raised upon this ground . . . for that they use their Dances as a means to procure Rain: Some of them having been known to beg this Liberty upon the Week Days, in order thereunto" (qtd. in Maultsby 3). Apparently, slave owners did not immediately set out to influence the religious practices of their slaves; however, it would not be long before the masters began to insist that their slaves practice their religion, Christianity. I have found very little regarding the reception of the Africans to Christianity; nevertheless, they were converted, and their music changed to ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Elsie and Her Mother in Oranges Are Not the Only Fruit In a story of a young girl coming of age and finding her sexuality in a very religious community, it is key to have a female figure that plays a key role for the character. A mother should play the key role but what happens when this role is confused with a very spiritual role? Where will a young girl turn to when her life goes against the rules society has set for her? Jeanette has lived a sheltered life with no influence on her except for the church. Her mother is a strict Christian with a deep resentment for things and people not within her fold. Being brought up in a society where going against the norm is a sin. A society that shakes its head at acts of individualism and ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... These differences between these two women are what make Jeanette a rounded person, if not a confused one at first. Jeanette gained a sense a self with her mother. She knew she was to work with the Lord and teach his words to others. Her goal in life was to go and be a missionary, to teach others how to believe in God. Combined with this imbedded sense of self is the confidence Elsie gave her. Elsie not only understood the word of the Lord and came from within the society Jeanette grew up in, she had a sense of the world around her, that the world didn?t start and stop with the preaching of the Lord. Elsie gave Jeanette a feeling of fellowship, a deep friendship that was based on true feelings, not the Lord. In one part of the book Elsie helps Jeanette with the transition of home schooling, which was based on biblical texts, to public schooling. Elsie gave Jeanette a way of incorporating her biblical background into a public school setting, even if it did shock and raise eyebrows. The older woman gave Jeanette a much–needed avenue to express herself. At this time her mother is not too upset with the friendship. She likes the reaction Jeanette is getting from her religious art works and other biblical oddities that seem out of place in public school. Elsie is still seen as a fellow follower, a follower of Jeanette?s mother. The relationship between Elsie and her mother gets strained after Jeanette is ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 38. Difference Between Gospel And Gospel Music It is interesting to see the many forms of vernacular in African American music. For years African Americans language has been developing from the beginning of slavery till now. Spiritual and Gospel music are both example of genres that are similar and different but are both Vernacular. It is my best interest to compare and contract both genres of music by studying their language, form of development, and rhythm flow. Spiritual music is religious songs sung by African American slaves in the eighteen centuary. These songs where sung in the churches and during labor work in the plantation. Spiritual songs provided a "...psychic escape from the workaday world of slavery's restrictions and cruelties." Spiritual songs were sung to uplift one another ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... It is interesting to see the changes of concept and the changes in the language. Take for example from spiritual the song "God's a Gonna Trouble the water" and gospel song "Down by the riverside". Both songs are obviously reference the waters in the south. Slaves where known for hidden messages in their songs and God's a gonna trouble the water carries a message that plantation owners wouldn't understand. It warns children to escape their freedom by walking in the waters with the guide of God. The song also portrays an old school language that we do not use in the gospel: Wade in the water, children, Wade in the water children, Wade in the water, children, God's a –gonna trouble the water. The word wading is sung instead of walking in the water. With the phrase "a–gonna" instead of is going to. This type of language you will not find the in gospel. The song "Down by the Riverside" have same meaning as the spiritual song. There is hardly any reference to God unlike the spiritual song mentions the Israelites. There is reference to heaven or becoming one with god for example: I'm gonna put on my long white robes Down by the Riverside Down by the riverside Down by the ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 39. Religious Music Research Paper Religious music is an important way of proclaiming the Christian message. There are many different types of religious music: psalm singing, gospel music, black gospel music, and contemporary music. These types of religious share many things in common but take influences from different sources. Psalm singing was established by the English Pilgrims and the Puritans that settled in Massachusetts. These groups waned communities where they worship freely. Their worship included singing of metered and rhymed versions of the Psalms. Two methods of psalm singing were present during this time: a formal style present in the more musically literate people, and a folk–like style present in the rural, small–town places. The formal style involved learning hymns from notated music, while the folk style required learning songs by memory. Psalm singing was a major influence to American religious music. Originally, gospel music meant hymns and songs containing text related to the first four books of the New Testament rather than to the Psalms. This term came to include a large variety of hymns and songs. Gospel music became widely used in the early nineteenth century, when preachers strated a massive revival for religion. The southern gospel music of the present day started from this tradition. The gospel ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
