Who Really Cares? New York : Basic Books, 2006
Brooks, Arthur C. Who Really Cares? New York: Basic Books, 2006
In Who Really Cares?, Arthur C. Brooks made an intriguing case regarding the debate between
which group of the general public, liberals or conservatives, gives more to charity. The author notes
that he sees in society, that there is a popular belief that people whose ideologies fall under the ideas
of liberalism give more than their conservative counterparts.
The main point he is trying to make, is that conservatives happen to be more charitable than liberals.
Not just in giving, but in how often they volunteer as well. The author sums up the wide held belief
in the following quote. "The conventional wisdom runs like this: Liberals are charitable because
they advocate government redistribution of money in the name of social justice; conservatives are
uncharitable because they oppose these policies." (Pg 20.).
However, Arthur C. Brooks proves that the opposite of the belief featured in the respective quote is
true by looking at data of charity giving trends. I felt through reading this, we can explain his
argument in two spheres. A much more in depth domestic (exclusively applying to the United
States) argument, and a less in depth international argument (applying mostly to Europe, and
comparing it to United States.).
His first domestic focused argument has to do with the data between liberal states, conservative
states, and giving patterns. He notes that conservative states tend to be

Barack Obama Keynote Address Analysis
The Keynote Address at 2004 Democratic National Convention is a popular speech by Barack
Obama that demonstrates the power of rhetoric. It was given by Obama, senator of state of Illinois,
at the Democratic National Convention on the night of Tuesday, July 27, 2004 AD. The purpose of
his address was to call the American voters to elect their (Democratic) presidential nominee John
Kerry. He delivered the speech in front of the democratic delegates from all 50 states of U.S.A. It
was also streamed live to 9 million people. Using rhetorical devices– ethos, pathos, logos and using
other rhetorical devices in an emotional tone, Obama has tried to invoke a sense of unity among
Americans and elect John Kerry as their president in order to institutionalize the unity. Mark
Lebovich, the chief National correspondent for NY Times Magazine, wrote, "The speech became a
touchstone of national unity and soaring manifesto of hope" (Lebovich). Obama's speech is full of
rhetorical devices. He has heavily relied upon rhetorical tools like anaphora and anastrophe in the
speech. The use of these devices in the speech provides more emphasis on the key idea. The use of
anaphora like "John Kerry believes..." and "I stand here..." has drawn much focus of audience on his
key point of presenting Kerry as the candidate (Obama 3). Using anastrophe like "that choice" and
"calls of hope" has emphasized his point of calling Kerry as the perfect candidate to address the
needs of people (Obama 3). The famous

Media Affects of the Vietnam War Essay
Media Affects of the Vietnam War War is truly a horrific event that unfortunately occurs in our
world frequently. There are a variety of ethical questions surrounding war, such as how much should
citizens know about the fighting? When it comes to reporting the news, it is the goal of the network
to report the news first. The benefit to this is people will turn to them first when it comes to breaking
stories. However if the news is delivered based on speed and not accuracy this can be harmful to
society. War is a very serious event and should not be taken lightly. Therefore, reporters must make
sure facts are correct and unbiased. In both the Vietnam War and our current war we see reporters
going to extreme measures to be the first ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Lies and corruption capture people. Therefore people will always pay attention to the stories about
our government lying to us. These weapons have still not been found and this is extremely similar to
how the ship may not have ever been shot down in Tonkin. Despite numerous inaccurate reports
there were attempts of trying to report the war accurately. However whenever a news channel would
report Americans getting killed in Vietnam the government would work quickly to cover it up.
President Nixon is quoted as saying "the press is our biggest enemy." This one phrase sums up the
war. The press would try to report fairly to the American people, but the government would squash it
and make the press look bad (Media Beat Vietnam War, Solomon and Cohen). Therefore the press
would only report good things so that the government would look highly upon them and give them
better seating in white house briefings. This highly affected the people working in Vietnam. They
were forced to be there, and the stories they were trying to report were not even reported. There are
certainly a lot of examples of war reporting being inaccurate. When we read John Kerry's letters to
his mother we realized what Kerry was telling his mother and what his mother was hearing on TV
were two totally different stories. Kerry wrote to his mother about bloodshed,

The Effects Of Music On The Revolutionary War
To deny the power of music is a waste of an excellent source, one important and extremely useful in
the way we learn. Though some people would look at music as a step forward in the progression of
humanity, it is known to be a much stronger force; and for some, it really defines their existence.
Music is definitely a driving force in society: it has been in existence since the beginning of human
race. The average human spends many hours a day listening to music, whether it's taken as a main
interest or just as something to satisfy us for the day. Music has and certainly had a great effect on
how we think and act, for all one knows, affecting our intelligence. Music served a very functional
role in the Revolutionary War. Songs were written and sang for different reasons. Mainly, they were
used to help make people thrilled, emotional, make fun of the enemy, & forget the terrible realities
of war. During the American Civil War, music played a distinguished role on both sides of the
conflict: the Union and the Confederate. At the time, on the battlefield, a variety of instruments were
being played to issue and lead marching orders and even, at times, to simply boost the Sarkisyan 2
morale of a soldier. Music was a major diversion from the slaughtering and killing going on, helping
the soldiers deal with their homesickness and boredom. WWI had a major impact, not only on
Europe, but on the world. The music during the time is also chaotic for the most part, like the war

Essay about John Edwards' Biography
John Edwards' Biography
Many Americans recognize John Edwards as the second coming of Jimmy Carter; the soft–spoken
Democratic Senator from the south. They know him as the running mate of John Kerry in his 2004
Presidential campaign. But before the North Carolina Senator entertained aspirations of President or
Vice–President of the United States, John Edwards made a name for himself as a successful trial
lawyer, a strong husband and father, and charismatic politician.
Born in Seneca, South Carolina on June 10th 1953, Johnny Reid Edwards was raised a Methodist
and learned the values of hard work and perseverance from his father, Wallace and mother, Bobbie,
while growing up in Robbins, North Carolina. Working alongside his father in ... Show more content

In Congress, Senator Edwards quickly emerged as a champion for the issues that make a difference
to American families: quality health care, better schools, protecting civil liberties, preserving the
environment, saving Social Security and Medicare, and reforming the ways campaigns are financed.
As a member of the Select Committee on Intelligence, Senator Edwards worked tirelessly for a
strong national defense, and strengthening the security of our homeland. He authored key pieces of
legislation on Internet and port security, as well as biological terrorism. During the latter part of
2001 and throughout 2002, Edwards engaged in serious politicking, and on January 2, 2003, he
announced the formation of a presidential exploratory committee, declaring himself a champion for
regular folks. On September 16th 2003, in front of the old Milliken Mill (his father's workplace of
thirty–six years) in Robbins, North Carolina, Sen. Edwards formally announced his candidacy for
President during the 2004 elections. Although there was no rule or law against his inhabitance of a
Senate seat while running for President, John Edwards announced that he would not seek re–
election, so that he could focus all of his efforts toward his Presidential campaign.
Some viewed Edwards as a very viable candidate, given his success as a Senator in North Carolina.

The Rhetorical Analysis Of Barack Obama's Speech
This speech was presented in 2004 at the Democratic National Convention by a politician running
for the United States Senate at the time, also known as Barack Obama. In this speech while Obama
was still running for his campaign for the United States Senate he also supported John Kerry as he
was the party's presidential nominee for that year's election. This is one of Obama's most historical
speeches he has ever given and he did this by using several language deceptive devices such as
euphemisms, emotive language, and persuasive language in order to keep his audience attention so
that he could get his main message across to the whole country of the United States. His message
was that the only way to fix the problems in the country is to ... Show more content on

So because these words sound powerful together it instantly keeps the audience hooked to Obama's
speech because there are so many people who are high believers in the constitution . Hence, it is
important that these euphemisms sound powerful and keep the audience interested because it has the
audience focused on trying to coney Obama's main message of his speech. Next, another language
deceptive device that Obama used in his speech to get his message across to the audience was
emotive language. Which is language that uses emotions in order to make the audience relate to
what Obama says. For example, in the eleventh paragraph of the speech Obama states
" We have more work to do.. More work for the worker that I met in Galesburg, Illinois, who are
losing their jobs and now are having to compete with their own children for jobs that pay seven
bucks an hour; more to do for the father that I met who was losing his job and choking back tears,
wondering how he would pay 4500 dollars a month for drugs his son needs." ( Obama 43–47)
In this part of the paragraph Obama used so much emotive language. He used personal experience
where he saw people struggling in this country. He adds by saying that there's work needed to do for
them. Obama was not referring just doing work for those specific people individually, but to every
other person who is struggling the same ways these people were struggling. These examples are

The Problem with Presidential Primaries
The Problem with Presidential Primaries
Ever since the election season of 1972, presidential primaries have become "the dominant means of
selecting the two major party candidates."i[i] The primary system is one in which the eligible voters
of each state do one of the following: 1) Vote for a presidential candidate to run for their party in the
general election. 2) Vote for a delegate pledged to vote for a certain candidate at the party's national
convention. As intended, this process would bring the candidate selection processes out into the
open and "let the people vote for the candidate of their choice."ii[ii] On the surface, this may look
very democratic (and admittedly, in some instances it was/is), but upon closer ... Show more content

Standing in his way was the fact that only one of the early primary states had a true open primary–
Michigan. Both New Hampshire and South Carolina were considered "modified open
primaries"iii[iii] that tended to discourage Independent voting. In addition, Delaware and Arizona
were closed primaries that would not allow Independents or Democrats to vote. However, despite
the closed primary, McCain's home state of Arizona was essentially a lock.
Due to heavy campaigning, McCain was able to win New Hampshire by a "48% to 30%"iv[iv]
margin. George W. Bush emphatically won the closed Delaware primary by a "51% to 25%"v[v]
margin. Bush then went on to win in South Carolina's modified open primary by a "53% to
42%"vi[vi] margin, thus robbing McCain's hopes of gaining momentum. Despite this, McCain did
get back on the winning track with wins in Michigan's open primary and in Arizona's closed
primary.
Victories aside, McCain was still going against the mainstream Republicans who were backing
Bush. The structure of the primaries early in the season allowed McCain to make a name for
himself, but the fact that closed primaries worked and would continue to work against him made
winning the nomination extremely difficult.

Using Kieran O' Conor's Medieval Rural Settlement in...
The Anglo–Norman period in Ireland from c. 1169 – c. 1350, like people from Europe are from
different social ranks and origins. The evidence researched for this essay will help us understand and
focus on can depictions of what the rural landscape in Munster looked like (O'Conor 2004, p. 228).
In the past of archaeological research the rural landscape in Munster has been neglected for
excavating urban areas in Cork, Limerick and Waterford, however, there have been a few
publications on rural landscapes in research years yet evidence is still limited (O'Conor 2004, p.
230). In this essay the features of a manorial landscape in Anglo–Norman and Gaelic–Irish
settlements in Munster.
The settlements that existed in the countryside of Munster were Anglo–Irish dominated and were
from the high medieval period (O'Conor 2004, p. 231). The land that was conquered by theses
settlers was then divided into between them into estates which are called manors (O'Conor 2004, p.
232). In the centre of these manors resided a manorial lord most often in different types of castles.
These castles divide into large masonry castles such as the Adare castle in county Limerick, or
smaller masonry castles which break up into hall–houses, mottes and ringworks (O'Conor 2004, p.
232). These castles also had defensive features made from earth and timber (O'Conor 2004, p. 232)
the majority of castles built by Anglo–Normans were made completely of timber and earth.
There is no specific figures of castles

Born in the USA vs. Banned in the USAAlthough both of these songs feature the iconic tune of
Bruce Springsteen's "Born in the USA", their content could not be more dissimilar. Born in the USA
is a well known, but largely misinterpreted and misunderstood song. Banned in the USA is a
comparably less famous parody of Springsteen's iconic tune. Although Springsteen's song is often
thought to be a song that embodies national pride and patriotism, this could not be further from the
truth. Similarly to Banned in the USA, Springsteen's song is a criticism of America. Born in the

POlitical Campaign Advertising Essays
Since 1952, television has played a major role in presidential elections. Television allows candidates
to reach a broad number of people, and personalities, to help push along their campaigns.
Campaigns help the candidates just as much as the voters. The candidates get to be identified, and
known to the voters, and the voters get to hear and see how a specific candidate identifies with their
needs and wants. The best way to get this information out there is through the most used form of
media, television.
When candidates develop a plan of attack for campaign advertising, they tend to aim for at least four
types of commercials. One form or type of commercial is those which play on the fears of
countrymen. Fear ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
During the 2004 election, President Bush's campaign ads showed him to be a leader and a strong
president in a time when leadership was needed. Kerry's ad showed him to be a people person, and a
person who connects with the citizen of this country.
Political parties also use ads that make there opponent out to be the bad guy, and often these ads
come from what their opponent has said in the past. Candidates use information from the past to
display the image that there opponent can not be trusted and will go back on his or her word. This is
typically called "flip flopping". When candidates make there opponent out to be a flip flopper, the
opponent is making things worst for themselves. The Republican Party ran a series of ads that made
Senator Kerry look like a flip flopper, and I think the overall effective ness of those ads was a major
factor in the election, but Senator Kerry also stated his claims and told the voter how he fells on the
very same issues that the republican party made senator Kerry to look indecisive on.
Campaigns that are introducing a candidate to mainstream national coverage tend to run ads that
will show a candidates history and their background. These ads might list what some might call the
qualification needed to be in office. These ads usually show a record of good decision making,
leadership, honesty,

Similarities Between the War in Iraq and the Vietnam War
As time passes, every society endures situations which stress its' very fabric. Each societies' history
is sprinkled with these situations. One such situation which the United States underwent was the
Vietnam war. For years this particular event has been hotly debated. Hardly anyone who was present
at the time agrees on any point concerning this war, except that they regret it. It has become 'the
greatest American foreign policy calamity of the century.' . Now the United States finds itself
entangled in another war. A war in Iraq which is beginning to resemble more and more the events of

While their goals differ the outcome of their decision ended up the same. Johnson?s goal was only
to do enough in Vietnam in order to avoid losing Vietnam to communism. Bush?s goals are to fight
terrorism and prevent other possible terrorist attacks.
In both cases public opinion of the president and of the military engagement went down. Polls of
American society showed that Johnson?s popularity, at just 35 percent had fallen lower than any
other president since Truman. Currently Bush?s popularity has fallen to the mid 40 percent.
Increasing numbers of citizens are beginning to believe that his handling of the Iraqi threat has only
increased the overall terrorist threat. Public opinion which was once heavily in support of the war in
Iraq, has fallen to 57 percent, just barely a majority. In the case of the Vietnam war the next
president?s first order of business was to remove the troops from battle, and already the talk is of
how to disentangle the troops and get them home. Presidential candidates during the Vietnam era
placed heavy emphasis on their commitment to withdrawing troops, while present Presidential
candidate John Kerry has been quoted as saying ?We need to set a new course in Iraq,?we need to?
put an end to the American occupation.? During the Vietnam Era, there were numerous protests.
Thousands of Americans protested American involvement in Vietnam. All across America there

Barack Obama Keynote Speech Essay
In 2004, Barrack Hussein Obama was a little–known state senator from Illinois. As Saturday Night
Live put it, in 2007 he "stumbled out of a soup kitchen with a basketball and a cigarette". However,
in 2004, he got his first piece of nationwide exposure when he delivered the keynote speech to the
Democratic National Convention. Despite the relatively low coverage of the speech by major cable
news networks, videos of the speech have garnered over twelve million views on YouTube. In
Obama's historic address, his use of Aristotelian rhetoric impressed the nation and led to his
eventual election as president.

Obama begins the speech by stating, "On behalf of the great state of Illinois, crossroads of a nation,
land of Lincoln..." (Obama 1). This start to the address immediately sets into people's mind that he is
not just a nobody, he is a state senator. Additionally, he ties himself to Lincoln through their shared
home state. This seems to make the audience more apt to listen to Obama, which is very effective.
Obama then turns to the stated purpose of his speech, promoting nominee John Kerry, saying "...a
man to lead us who embodies the best this country has to offer." (Obama 3). This acknowledges
Kerry's nomination for president from the Democratic Party. Additionally, it announces Obama's
belief that Kerry truly is the best nominee that the party has to offer. When he later states all of the
things that he believes embody the best of John Kerry, he sticks to non–partisan issues; healthcare,
energy independence, freedom, and hard work take the forefront of his list. This list coupled with
the anaphora ("John Kerry believes") further enforce the point that John Kerry is the best choice for
president. His statement "...in a dangerous world, war should never be the first option." (Obama 3)
juxtaposes Kerry with the Republican candidate, George Bush, who was criticized for rushing into
the Afghanistan War. This raises Kerry relative to his opponent. The juxtaposition is a powerful

Compare And Contrast Democratic Party And Republican Party
The two major political parties in the United States of America are the Democratic party and the
Republican party. Both have mostly differing views as Democrats tend to be liberal and Republicans
tend to be conservative. Democrats, usually, believe in the inherent good of humankind while
Republicans tend to believe human nature is not inherently so pure. The two parties also have
different opinions on the role of the government; Republicans believe the government is there to
protect the peoples' rights and Democrats believe the government should have a strong role. Another
important topic to cover is the American's rights versus responsibilities. Democrats tend to believe
we are guaranteed more rights than given responsibilities and Republicans believe the opposite.
With all this in mind, which party has a more ethical and correct platform?
The democratic party's platform states" cooperation is better than conflict, unity is better than
division, empowerment is better than resentment, and bridges are better than walls." Democrats
believe in removing barriers and creating opportunities. One way this can be accomplished is by
ending systematic racism; this can be done by pushing for social reform, removing the Confederate
flag from public property as it is a racist symbol and by closing the racial pay and wealth gap.
Another reform the democrat will push for is the criminal justice system. Privatized prisons and
detention centers need to be ended as well as change for

The Vietnam War Had A Tremendous Effect On The World
The Vietnam War had a tremendous effect on the world, especially the United States. Not only did
the war affect people in battle, but also left permanent effects on people all over the world. Over
57,000 U.S. citizens died and over 140,000 injured in battle. Multiple Americans were impacted by
the war, vast amount of people died but more were injured. North Vietnam won the battle against
South Vietnam and their allies. The Fall of Saigon in 1975 was the end of a gruesome war. The war
had multiple long–term effects on the soldiers who fought for America.
Veterans from the war even made groups that opposed the war. These soldiers formed an
organization called Vietnam Veterans Against the War (VVAW). This organization held a purpose,
this was to form a voice for the opposition to bring home our military men and woman in the
ongoing war in Vietnam, this organization had over 28,000 members across the United States as
well as active military personnel in Vietnam. Through the actions of the organization, they exposed
the real truth about the United States involvement in Vietnam and veterans real life experiences,
which made America realize how unjust this war was. VVAW was created in retrospect to the vast
majority of veterans with PTSD because of Vietnam. Agent Orange, a chemical that U.S. used

On Bruce Springsteen's Song 'Born In The USA'
"Born in the U.S.A." The song "Born in the U.S.A." was written by Bruce springsteen. Bruce grew
up in New Jersey, and shows it in this song. Bruce is widely known for his americana, working class
poetic lyrics. The song is about the mistreatment of Vietnamese War veterans, but people believe
"Born in the U.S.A." is a real patriotic song, when in reality they just misunderstand the deeper
connotation .Bruce himself did not serve in the Vietnam War. He was called upon to serve, but did
not meet requirements. This song was meant to defend the veterans, his use of diction ,repetition ,
and comparisons throughout the song to meets that purpose rather than just patriotism. Bruce

The song is from the point of view of a soldier just returning home that tries to get a job at the
refinery. The man doing the interviews for the refinery will not hire him, for fear of backlash from
the public, and other workers not cooperating with him. Veterans were not appreciated because
America's public thought they killed innocent women, and children in the war. So when he went to

John Tyree : A Black Man Who Serves As A Soldier
John Tyree is a young man who serves as a sergeant in the U.S. Army. John is from Wilmington,
North Carolina, which is a popular tourist town with the largest port in the state. He is tall and
muscular with short brown hair, tattoos, and brown eyes. John speaks with the politeness of a true
southern gentleman. His speech can be described as reserved, though he does speak from the heart
when he feels it is necessary. John is a Christian, but also believes in fate and luck. He was baptized
as a child, but has not attended church in a few years. John's mother abandoned him when he was a
small child. His father, who raised John alone, is a man of few words who prefers coin collection
over socializing John is protective of people that are close to him. "You fight for your friend, to keep
him alive, and he fights for you..." (19). He shows to have a strong bond with his squad as they face
the rage of war and fierce training. They have intense loyalty towards one another. If one gets
injured or killed, they all are affected dramatically. John takes protecting his squad as a sense of
duty. "...I was the crusty old sergeant, the one who claimed to want nothing more than to ensure that
they got back to their moms in one piece. I would do what it took to keep them safe" (194). He
wants to keep the newbies safe as they witness the hardships of war. It shows that he cares for each
individual so much that he would do absolutely anything to protect them and get them home safely

Persuasive Essay
The United States army works arguably harder than any other Americans and they work to protect
us so that we can feel safe in the land home to over 300 million people. Recently the National
Football League has seen some very controversial behavior, during the National Anthem players
have sat, kneeled, raised fists and embraced teammates who have done the following to raise
awareness for police violence. But while doing this they have disrespected our army who are all
over the earth protecting us so that we can do the things that we love such as playing football. I
think that the players in the NFL should not be able to kneel during the National Anthem because it
disrespects a country that is fighting so the people in our country can feel safe.
First of all I feel like the NFL players should not be able to kneel is because it is very disrespectful
to veterans and people currently serving in the U.S military. According to the Daily Mail "The
president and other critics argued that the playing of the national anthem was the wrong time for
protests, regardless of the reason, because the song represents U.S. national unity and respect for
those who serve in the military." This shows how many people including the president of the United
States are very angry and disappointed with these NFL players because they have chosen a platform
that is a time to show respect and gratitude towards those who serve and have made it about a
completely different thing. I think that is why many

Personal Narrative-Atlantic Way
The days leading up to the fifth of August had been characteristically Irish, complete with clouds in
Connemara, a daylong drizzle in Dingle, and forty–mile–per–hour winds at the Cliffs of Moher
(which, under said conditions, were more deserving of their Princess Bride alias, the Cliffs of
Insanity). In Ireland, the island nation that gifts its western seaboard with 225 days of rain each year,
fickle weather is a fact of life. But now, for eight hours, my family needed the Wild Atlantic Way to
tame itself–perhaps, for just one day, the Mild Atlantic Way could suffice?
We had made our reservations to land on Skellig Michael five months in advance. Now, midway
through our road trip down the western coast of Ireland, we'd repeatedly encountered variants of the

An awed silence overtook the stern of the boat as the looming island grew larger and larger upon
approach. To the left of me, my mom widened her eyes, a lifelong fear of heights flashing across her
face. The captain didn't need to turn around to know what was happening. From the wheelhouse, he
simply laughed. "That's Little Skellig over there. We've still got a ways to go."
From a distance, Little Skellig could almost be mistaken for a snow–capped mountain. Up close,
however, the source of the island's feathery white dusting grows obvious. One of the largest bird
colonies in the world, Little Skellig is an annual breeding ground for more than 20,000 northern
gannets. By no means, however, should you allow the island's name to trick you. Towering over our

A Stranger Essay : Kindness To A Stranger
Kindness to a Stranger
It was a chilly evening in Southern Virginia many years ago. There was the old man whose beards
were glazed by the winter's frost, as he hopelessly waited for a ride across the river. Due to the frigid
north wind, his body was numb and stiff. Edward, who was passing by saw this desperate old man,
who looked so confused and helpless. He asked the old man, "what are you doing here at this late
hour?" The freezing man answered, "I am waiting for a ride to take me home." Edward took some
time with the old man, as they waited for a ride to take him to the next side of the river. The wait
seemed endless and ineffective. However, they both heard the faint, steady rhythm of approaching
hooves dashing along the icy path. Anxiously, the old man and Edwin watched as several riders
curved the bend. He let the first one pass without seeking attention from him. Apparently, Edward
was very annoyed, asking him the reason for not stopping the passing horseman. The man kept quiet
as he checked out on whether there was another one coming. The another one passed by, followed
by other two. When Edward saw that the old man was not using any effort to seek help from either
of the riders, he was tired and decided to leave the old man alone.
After a while, the last horseman by the name John Denis neared the spot where the old man had sat
like a snow statue. As this one came near, the old man caught the horseman's eye and said, "Sir,

The organization believed then and still today that if one of the elements of the equation is missing
that the end result will be zero profit growth.
With the strategy the company developed in the early 1980's the company began acquiring new
businesses and entering new global markets. With these new business ventures came success and the
company decided to go public in 1986. With this move the Kerry Group acquired a first mover

Kerry Group plc is listed on the Dublin and London stock exchanges. The company has a current
market capitalization of over 3.4 billion euros.
As stated, in the early 1980's Kerry Group began acquiring new businesses. By acquiring new
businesses this allowed Kerry to diversify and reduce risk. In 1987–88 the Group acquired the first

Wire Fox Terrier Research Paper
The Wire Fox Terrier has a strong, athletic body and a short, wiry coat with a soft undercoat.
Although he is very much the same as the Smooth Fox Terrier in behavior, the Wire Fox Terrier does
show some interesting differences. Similar to the Smooth, he is feisty, lively, and very independent,
but tends to be a slightly slower learner than the Smooth, perhaps because of his more distractible
nature. He is intelligent, cheerful, and gets along well with children. He is a great ratter and makes a
wonderful pet. He has a very high prey drive and is more dog–aggressive than the Smooth. This dog
is perhaps the most combative terrier aside from the Bedlington. He is wary of strangers, makes a
good watchdog, and tends to defend himself if provoked. He likes to bark and dig, sometimes
incessantly and should not be left in the yard for a long period of time. Training should begin early
and be consistent. Though he is an intelligent dog, some commands such as the "down" and "come"
may be difficult to teach to this willful and stubborn breed. ... Show more content on

Gun Control vs. Gun Rights Essays
The second amendment states " The right of the people to keep and bear arms". What does that
mean to us, basically and person in the United States is allowed to own and keep a fire arm in house.
Gun control advocates believe that right does not extend to ownership of military–style firearms that
are otherwise known as assault weapons. To curb gun–related violence certain checks are made,
such as mandatory child safety locks, background checks on those wishing to purchase a gun, limits
on the number of guns a person can buy and raising the age limit for gun ownership. Gun rights
groups, led by the National Rifle Assocation, argue that these and other proposals infringe on the
constitutional rights of law–abiding citizens. They maintain ... Show more content on

Some gun manufacturers have volunteered support for safety locks, but the NRA has criticized
safety locks for placing an undue burden on gun manufacturers without a proven benefit to the
public. At the forefront of the debate over guns is the assault weapons ban that went into effect in
1994. The ban, which was part of a larger anti–crime bill passed by Congress and signed by
President Clinton that year, applies to 19 specific models of semi–automatic firearms and to other
guns with assault–weapon features. The ban expired Sept. 13, 2004, and gun rights groups were
pressing Congress to allow the ban to lapse. Gun control advocates responded with a massive public
relations campaign encouraging voters to tell their elected representatives that Congress should
renew the ban.
The issue has become a hot potato in a presidential election year, with President Bush and Sen. John
Kerry taking positions designed not to infuriate voters on either side of the debate. Bush said he
supports an extension, but gun control advocates accused him of failing to pressure Congress into
action. Kerry announced his support for extending the ban, even as his campaign sought to boost the
Democratic presidential nominee's credentials as a gun owner and hunter.
Republican congressional leaders say the ban was allowed to lapse because gun control advocates in
the House and Senate did not have enough votes to extend it. They may be right.

Response To The Abortion Debate
The discussion that started in class on October 14, 2012 was in response to the issue of abortion,
since both Vice President Joe Biden and Congressman Paul Ryan being Catholics were asked what
their position on abortion was and how their views on abortion as Catholics would affect how their
administration would deal with the issue of abortion. Bidens answer was what I found to be quite
diplomatic since he one hand stated that he accepted his churchs position on abortion, yet at the
same time claimed that just because he has certain views on abortion doesnt mean he has the right
to enforce his beliefs on others who dont adhere to his faith. Ryans response to the question of
abortion started out with him saying that he doesnt see how he can separate his private life from

Im not sure if I would have used the word hypocritical since saying two different things would
definitely be inconsistency rather than hypocrisy, at least to me. However, my personal reaction to
the debate didnt see a problem in what Biden was saying. Just because a person may hold a belief
about something doesnt mean he cant allow others to feel differently about that very subject.
This could exactly be what Vice Presidential Joe Biden was trying to say in his response to the
abortion question in the debate. If anything Paul Ryans inconsistency should have been addressed
in class since he as Joe Biden pointed out during the debate said at one point that abortion should
not be allowed even in situations like rape, yet in the debate was saying something else. However, as
I observed there were also those, unlike me, who agreed with the professors view towards Joe
Bidens take on the abortion

Politics, Propaganda, and Hate Essay
Politics, Propaganda, and Hate
Propaganda is very important issue in our society. The word "propaganda" however, has a very
negative connotation. This may happen because people tend to associate it with "the enormous
campaigns that were waged by Hitler and Stalin,' (Delwiche 2002). Now propaganda has a different
face.
It may not be as obvious as but it is used regurlarly by politicians, companies and others who are
interested in influencing our behaviour. "Propaganda is the control of opinion by significant symbols
influence", (Laswell, as cited in Chadwick). There are seven types of propaganda devices. These

A relevant example is the Afghani response to the war against terrorism. Aaaron Delwiche published
a story on his site which was retrieved from the BBC. They reported a story in 2002, form the the
Afghan Islamic Press (AIP) about the propaganda material that was being distributed in
Afghanistan. The pamphlets were distributed in Nangarhar Province in Eastern Afghanistan. The
following is an quote from that pamphlet:
It is a well known and open fact that since mankind has been in existence a tireless and endless
struggle has been waged between good and evil. Good was always victorious and evil was destroyed
and devastated. This struggle continues today. Some Muslims have been confused and disappointed
by this anti terrorist campaign, but thank God, they separated the true Muslims from the hypocrites .
. . (America) captured strategic points and put its armies in the sacred places of the Muslims . . .by
creating pretexts and conspiracies, as America was afraid of the success of Muslims in the world,"
(Author, Unknown).
Although the source and authenticity of the pamphlet are unknown, it does appear to reflect the
views of 'true Muslims'. Judging by this letter they hold serious contempt for America. They spread
this hate by polarizing the two parties with the words 'good' and 'evil'. The Muslim community
being the previous and America being the latter. These prejudices create

The Campaign Year 1988 : George Bush And One From Michael...
For this assignment, I chose the campaign year 1988 to compare and contrast two advertisements,
one from George Bush and one from Michael Dukakis. The advertisement I chose to view for
George Bush was entitled "Family/Children" and the advertisement I chose to view for Michael
Dukakis was entitled "New Era." 1) Republican, George Bush: In George Bush's "Family/Children"
advertisement, the main focus was George Bush as an American family man who has met every
challenge in his past, and he is proud to be an American. Because of this focus, I would categorize
this advertisement as biographical. Democrat, Michael Dukakis In Michael Dukakis's "New Era"
advertisement, the focus was on Dukakis's many achievements: creating jobs, lowering debt, and
cutting taxes. This ad inferred that Dukakis would be qualified to bring America into the next era of
economic greatness. Due to the focus of this advertisement, I believe the category that best fits is
issue–oriented. 2) Republican, George Bush: In George Bush's campaign advertisement, two people
were talking about George Bush: Barbara Bush and a male narrator. The first speaker, Barbara Bush
spoke highly of George Bush through a sincere tone as she described how she wished people saw
him as she sees him. The next speaker was a male narrator who also spoke highly of George Bush in
a reverent tone as he explained that George Bush met every challenge given to him by his country.

There is one sure fire way to know that the political campaign season has started in the United

FECA put limitations on campaign advertising by political candidates. Lastly FECA created the
Federal Election Commission to oversee and regulate campaign financing (The FEC). With all the
restrictions placed on direct campaign contributions to political candidates, this type of contribution
is known as "hard money". One would assume this would make political campaign fundraising a
difficult task, but in the 2008 presidential campaign one billion dollars was raised by candidates
(Banking). Cleary "hard money" cannot be the only thing bankrolling our politicians. This is where
"soft money" plays a role, it is the loophole used by politicians to remove the cap on their
fundraising (Gill). "Soft money" is a donation made to National Party Committees rather than a
political candidate. This money cannot be directly used to promote candidates, but it can be used to
promote a political party's interests. This means that a political party cannot run a campaign
advertisement that directly ask viewers to vote for the party's candidate, but they can run
advertisements that include the candidate promoting the party. There is also no limitations on how
"soft money" can be used to portray candidates of other political parties, meaning that it can be
freely used to finance political attack ads. The biggest issue with "soft money' is that Federal

Essay about College Education is the Best Investment
The Value of a College Education
Why is it important to achieve a college degree, certificate or diploma? Generally speaking, what is
the importance of having a college education? This is a question that I have been debating and
fighting with myself for the past five years. Is it because with a college education a person can get a
better job, earn more money and ensure himself of a better life? Or is the whole concept of college a
fraud and a scam to manipulate individuals in feeling inferior without it? In this paper, I am going to
enlighten you of the pros and cons of having a valid college education and what it means to me.
Senator John Kerry said in a 2004 presidential debate that "Our college students represent only 20
percent ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
I believe that college graduates are also the ones whose children are inspired to earn a valid
education. College graduates generally have better jobs, earn more money than their average peers
which simply results in them enjoying a better quality of life.
On the negative or less optimistic side, it seems to be universally accepted that college education is a
good thing; however, thousands of colleges and millions of students spend vast amounts of time and
money chasing some sort of degree, diploma or certificate. But what is the value of these
qualifications? Most college students (me included) gets brainwashed or sidetracked by
administrators of education. They make it seems as though having a college education is the only
way doors will open for students. Certificates, diplomas, and degrees are held up as a status symbol
and the key to money, power and success. However, the truly powerful are not those with degrees,
but people who stand back and look at what is really important in life. These people are found in
every part of society. Take my present boss for instance, Carol Levine. Carol never attended college;
she actually was a high school drop out who eventually went on to receiving her GED. Today she is

Presidential Campaign Of President Obama
Political campaigns can elevate a candidate's position, or a poorly run campaign can doom that
candidate's chances no matter how good the candidate is. At the end of the day all that matters is
winning. That is the goal of political campaigns in a nutshell. There have been many tactics
implemented when trying to run a campaign. Of the tactics implemented there are those that are
believed to work better than others. Of those that work better than others are, mobilizing base voters
by properly identifying who they are, having a clear message and spreading that message to voters,
debate performances and fundraising efforts. In this paper the 2008 presidential campaign of current
president Barack Obama will be measured along with the 2004 presidential campaign of John F.
Kerry. In this paper both campaigns will be analyzed on what tactics they used properly, where they
were not as effective and what could have been differently.
One of the most important factors when trying to run a successful political campaign is properly
identifying and mobilizing base voters. According to the readings in the book Presidential Elections:
Strategies and Structures of American Politics, it gives reasons why people do and do not vote. One
of the reasons people do vote is because voting in some way or another makes the voter "feel good."
However when a campaign properly identifies their base voters, they can pretty much assume that
those voters are going to go out and vote, but more importantly

  • 2. Who Really Cares? New York : Basic Books, 2006 Brooks, Arthur C. Who Really Cares? New York: Basic Books, 2006 In Who Really Cares?, Arthur C. Brooks made an intriguing case regarding the debate between which group of the general public, liberals or conservatives, gives more to charity. The author notes that he sees in society, that there is a popular belief that people whose ideologies fall under the ideas of liberalism give more than their conservative counterparts. The main point he is trying to make, is that conservatives happen to be more charitable than liberals. Not just in giving, but in how often they volunteer as well. The author sums up the wide held belief in the following quote. "The conventional wisdom runs like this: Liberals are charitable because they advocate government redistribution of money in the name of social justice; conservatives are uncharitable because they oppose these policies." (Pg 20.). However, Arthur C. Brooks proves that the opposite of the belief featured in the respective quote is true by looking at data of charity giving trends. I felt through reading this, we can explain his argument in two spheres. A much more in depth domestic (exclusively applying to the United States) argument, and a less in depth international argument (applying mostly to Europe, and comparing it to United States.). His first domestic focused argument has to do with the data between liberal states, conservative states, and giving patterns. He notes that conservative states tend to be ... • 3. Barack Obama Keynote Address Analysis The Keynote Address at 2004 Democratic National Convention is a popular speech by Barack Obama that demonstrates the power of rhetoric. It was given by Obama, senator of state of Illinois, at the Democratic National Convention on the night of Tuesday, July 27, 2004 AD. The purpose of his address was to call the American voters to elect their (Democratic) presidential nominee John Kerry. He delivered the speech in front of the democratic delegates from all 50 states of U.S.A. It was also streamed live to 9 million people. Using rhetorical devices– ethos, pathos, logos and using other rhetorical devices in an emotional tone, Obama has tried to invoke a sense of unity among Americans and elect John Kerry as their president in order to institutionalize the unity. Mark Lebovich, the chief National correspondent for NY Times Magazine, wrote, "The speech became a touchstone of national unity and soaring manifesto of hope" (Lebovich). Obama's speech is full of rhetorical devices. He has heavily relied upon rhetorical tools like anaphora and anastrophe in the speech. The use of these devices in the speech provides more emphasis on the key idea. The use of anaphora like "John Kerry believes..." and "I stand here..." has drawn much focus of audience on his key point of presenting Kerry as the candidate (Obama 3). Using anastrophe like "that choice" and "calls of hope" has emphasized his point of calling Kerry as the perfect candidate to address the needs of people (Obama 3). The famous ... • 4. Media Affects of the Vietnam War Essay Media Affects of the Vietnam War War is truly a horrific event that unfortunately occurs in our world frequently. There are a variety of ethical questions surrounding war, such as how much should citizens know about the fighting? When it comes to reporting the news, it is the goal of the network to report the news first. The benefit to this is people will turn to them first when it comes to breaking stories. However if the news is delivered based on speed and not accuracy this can be harmful to society. War is a very serious event and should not be taken lightly. Therefore, reporters must make sure facts are correct and unbiased. In both the Vietnam War and our current war we see reporters going to extreme measures to be the first ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Lies and corruption capture people. Therefore people will always pay attention to the stories about our government lying to us. These weapons have still not been found and this is extremely similar to how the ship may not have ever been shot down in Tonkin. Despite numerous inaccurate reports there were attempts of trying to report the war accurately. However whenever a news channel would report Americans getting killed in Vietnam the government would work quickly to cover it up. President Nixon is quoted as saying "the press is our biggest enemy." This one phrase sums up the war. The press would try to report fairly to the American people, but the government would squash it and make the press look bad (Media Beat Vietnam War, Solomon and Cohen). Therefore the press would only report good things so that the government would look highly upon them and give them better seating in white house briefings. This highly affected the people working in Vietnam. They were forced to be there, and the stories they were trying to report were not even reported. There are certainly a lot of examples of war reporting being inaccurate. When we read John Kerry's letters to his mother we realized what Kerry was telling his mother and what his mother was hearing on TV were two totally different stories. • 5. The Effects Of Music On The Revolutionary War To deny the power of music is a waste of an excellent source, one important and extremely useful in the way we learn. Though some people would look at music as a step forward in the progression of humanity, it is known to be a much stronger force; and for some, it really defines their existence. Music is definitely a driving force in society: it has been in existence since the beginning of human race. The average human spends many hours a day listening to music, whether it's taken as a main interest or just as something to satisfy us for the day. Music has and certainly had a great effect on how we think and act, for all one knows, affecting our intelligence. Music served a very functional role in the Revolutionary War. Songs were written and sang for different reasons. Mainly, they were used to help make people thrilled, emotional, make fun of the enemy, & forget the terrible realities of war. During the American Civil War, music played a distinguished role on both sides of the conflict: the Union and the Confederate. At the time, on the battlefield, a variety of instruments were being played to issue and lead marching orders and even, at times, to simply boost the Sarkisyan 2 morale of a soldier. Music was a major diversion from the slaughtering and killing going on, helping the soldiers deal with their homesickness and boredom. WWI had a major impact, not only on Europe, but on the world. He authored key pieces of legislation on Internet and port security, as well as biological terrorism. • 7. The Rhetorical Analysis Of Barack Obama's Speech This speech was presented in 2004 at the Democratic National Convention by a politician running for the United States Senate at the time, also known as Barack Obama. In this speech while Obama was still running for his campaign for the United States Senate he also supported John Kerry as he was the party's presidential nominee for that year's election. This is one of Obama's most historical speeches he has ever given and he did this by using several language deceptive devices such as euphemisms, emotive language, and persuasive language in order to keep his audience attention so that he could get his main message across to the whole country of the United States. So because these words sound powerful together it instantly keeps the audience hooked to Obama's speech because there are so many people who are high believers in the constitution . Hence, it is important that these euphemisms sound powerful and keep the audience interested because it has the audience focused on trying to coney Obama's main message of his speech. Next, another language deceptive device that Obama used in his speech to get his message across to the audience was emotive language. Which is language that uses emotions in order to make the audience relate to what Obama says. For example, in the eleventh paragraph of the speech Obama states " We have more work to do.. More work for the worker that I met in Galesburg, Illinois, who are losing their jobs and now are having to compete with their own children for jobs that pay seven bucks an hour; more to do for the father that I met who was losing his job and choking back tears, wondering how he would pay 4500 dollars a month for drugs his son needs." ( Obama 43–47) In this part of the paragraph Obama used so much emotive language. He used personal experience where he saw people struggling in this country. He adds by saying that there's work needed to do for them. Obama was not referring just doing work for those specific people individually, but to every other person who is struggling the same ways these people were struggling. These examples are ... • 8. The Problem with Presidential Primaries The Problem with Presidential Primaries Ever since the election season of 1972, presidential primaries have become "the dominant means of selecting the two major party candidates."i[i] The primary system is one in which the eligible voters of each state do one of the following: 1) Vote for a presidential candidate to run for their party in the general election. 2) Vote for a delegate pledged to vote for a certain candidate at the party's national convention. As intended, this process would bring the candidate selection processes out into the open and "let the people vote for the candidate of their choice."ii[ii] On the surface, this may look very democratic (and admittedly, in some instances it was/is), but upon closer ... Both New Hampshire and South Carolina were considered "modified open primaries"iii[iii] that tended to discourage Independent voting. In addition, Delaware and Arizona were closed primaries that would not allow Independents or Democrats to vote. However, despite the closed primary, McCain's home state of Arizona was essentially a lock. Due to heavy campaigning, McCain was able to win New Hampshire by a "48% to 30%"iv[iv] margin. George W. Bush emphatically won the closed Delaware primary by a "51% to 25%"v[v] margin. Bush then went on to win in South Carolina's modified open primary by a "53% to 42%"vi[vi] margin, thus robbing McCain's hopes of gaining momentum. Despite this, McCain did get back on the winning track with wins in Michigan's open primary and in Arizona's closed primary. Victories aside, McCain was still going against the mainstream Republicans who were backing Bush. The structure of the primaries early in the season allowed McCain to make a name for himself, but the fact that closed primaries worked and would continue to work against him made winning the nomination extremely difficult. The evidence researched for this essay will help us understand and focus on can depictions of what the rural landscape in Munster looked like (O'Conor 2004, p. 228). In the past of archaeological research the rural landscape in Munster has been neglected for excavating urban areas in Cork, Limerick and Waterford, however, there have been a few publications on rural landscapes in research years yet evidence is still limited (O'Conor 2004, p. 230). In this essay the features of a manorial landscape in Anglo–Norman and Gaelic–Irish settlements in Munster. The settlements that existed in the countryside of Munster were Anglo–Irish dominated and were from the high medieval period (O'Conor 2004, p. 231). The land that was conquered by theses settlers was then divided into between them into estates which are called manors (O'Conor 2004, p. 232). In the centre of these manors resided a manorial lord most often in different types of castles. These castles divide into large masonry castles such as the Adare castle in county Limerick, or smaller masonry castles which break up into hall–houses, mottes and ringworks (O'Conor 2004, p. 232). Television allows candidates to reach a broad number of people, and personalities, to help push along their campaigns. Campaigns help the candidates just as much as the voters. The candidates get to be identified, and known to the voters, and the voters get to hear and see how a specific candidate identifies with their needs and wants. The best way to get this information out there is through the most used form of media, television. When candidates develop a plan of attack for campaign advertising, they tend to aim for at least four types of commercials. Political parties also use ads that make there opponent out to be the bad guy, and often these ads come from what their opponent has said in the past. Candidates use information from the past to display the image that there opponent can not be trusted and will go back on his or her word. This is typically called "flip flopping". When candidates make there opponent out to be a flip flopper, the opponent is making things worst for themselves. The Republican Party ran a series of ads that made Senator Kerry look like a flip flopper, and I think the overall effective ness of those ads was a major factor in the election, but Senator Kerry also stated his claims and told the voter how he fells on the very same issues that the republican party made senator Kerry to look indecisive on. Hardly anyone who was present at the time agrees on any point concerning this war, except that they regret it. It has become 'the greatest American foreign policy calamity of the century.' . Johnson?s goal was only to do enough in Vietnam in order to avoid losing Vietnam to communism. Bush?s goals are to fight terrorism and prevent other possible terrorist attacks. In both cases public opinion of the president and of the military engagement went down. Polls of American society showed that Johnson?s popularity, at just 35 percent had fallen lower than any other president since Truman. Currently Bush?s popularity has fallen to the mid 40 percent. Increasing numbers of citizens are beginning to believe that his handling of the Iraqi threat has only increased the overall terrorist threat. Public opinion which was once heavily in support of the war in Iraq, has fallen to 57 percent, just barely a majority. In the case of the Vietnam war the next president?s first order of business was to remove the troops from battle, and already the talk is of how to disentangle the troops and get them home. Presidential candidates during the Vietnam era placed heavy emphasis on their commitment to withdrawing troops, while present Presidential candidate John Kerry has been quoted as saying ?We need to set a new course in Iraq,?we need to? put an end to the American occupation.? As Saturday Night Live put it, in 2007 he "stumbled out of a soup kitchen with a basketball and a cigarette". However, in 2004, he got his first piece of nationwide exposure when he delivered the keynote speech to the Democratic National Convention. Despite the relatively low coverage of the speech by major cable news networks, videos of the speech have garnered over twelve million views on YouTube. Obama begins the speech by stating, "On behalf of the great state of Illinois, crossroads of a nation, land of Lincoln..." (Obama 1). This start to the address immediately sets into people's mind that he is not just a nobody, he is a state senator. Additionally, he ties himself to Lincoln through their shared home state. This seems to make the audience more apt to listen to Obama, which is very effective. Obama then turns to the stated purpose of his speech, promoting nominee John Kerry, saying "...a man to lead us who embodies the best this country has to offer." (Obama 3). This acknowledges Kerry's nomination for president from the Democratic Party. Additionally, it announces Obama's belief that Kerry truly is the best nominee that the party has to offer. When he later states all of the things that he believes embody the best of John Kerry, he sticks to non–partisan issues; healthcare, energy independence, freedom, and hard work take the forefront of his list. This list coupled with the anaphora ("John Kerry believes") further enforce the point that John Kerry is the best choice for president. His statement "...in a dangerous world, war should never be the first option." (Obama 3) juxtaposes Kerry with the Republican candidate, George Bush, who was criticized for rushing into the Afghanistan War. This raises Kerry relative to his opponent. • 16. Compare And Contrast Democratic Party And Republican Party The two major political parties in the United States of America are the Democratic party and the Republican party. Both have mostly differing views as Democrats tend to be liberal and Republicans tend to be conservative. Democrats, usually, believe in the inherent good of humankind while Republicans tend to believe human nature is not inherently so pure. The two parties also have different opinions on the role of the government; Republicans believe the government is there to protect the peoples' rights and Democrats believe the government should have a strong role. Another important topic to cover is the American's rights versus responsibilities. Democrats tend to believe we are guaranteed more rights than given responsibilities and Republicans believe the opposite. With all this in mind, which party has a more ethical and correct platform? The democratic party's platform states" cooperation is better than conflict, unity is better than division, empowerment is better than resentment, and bridges are better than walls." Democrats believe in removing barriers and creating opportunities. One way this can be accomplished is by ending systematic racism; this can be done by pushing for social reform, removing the Confederate flag from public property as it is a racist symbol and by closing the racial pay and wealth gap. Another reform the democrat will push for is the criminal justice system. Privatized prisons and detention centers need to be ended as well as change for ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Recently the National Football League has seen some very controversial behavior, during the National Anthem players have sat, kneeled, raised fists and embraced teammates who have done the following to raise awareness for police violence. But while doing this they have disrespected our army who are all over the earth protecting us so that we can do the things that we love such as playing football. I think that the players in the NFL should not be able to kneel during the National Anthem because it disrespects a country that is fighting so the people in our country can feel safe. First of all I feel like the NFL players should not be able to kneel is because it is very disrespectful to veterans and people currently serving in the U.S military. According to the Daily Mail "The president and other critics argued that the playing of the national anthem was the wrong time for protests, regardless of the reason, because the song represents U.S. national unity and respect for those who serve in the military." There was the old man whose beards were glazed by the winter's frost, as he hopelessly waited for a ride across the river. Due to the frigid north wind, his body was numb and stiff. Edward, who was passing by saw this desperate old man, who looked so confused and helpless. He asked the old man, "what are you doing here at this late hour?" The freezing man answered, "I am waiting for a ride to take me home." Edward took some time with the old man, as they waited for a ride to take him to the next side of the river. The wait seemed endless and ineffective. However, they both heard the faint, steady rhythm of approaching hooves dashing along the icy path. Anxiously, the old man and Edwin watched as several riders curved the bend. He let the first one pass without seeking attention from him. Apparently, Edward was very annoyed, asking him the reason for not stopping the passing horseman. The man kept quiet as he checked out on whether there was another one coming. The another one passed by, followed by other two. A relevant example is the Afghani response to the war against terrorism. Aaaron Delwiche published a story on his site which was retrieved from the BBC. They reported a story in 2002, form the the Afghan Islamic Press (AIP) about the propaganda material that was being distributed in Afghanistan. The pamphlets were distributed in Nangarhar Province in Eastern Afghanistan. The following is an quote from that pamphlet: It is a well known and open fact that since mankind has been in existence a tireless and endless struggle has been waged between good and evil. Good was always victorious and evil was destroyed and devastated. This struggle continues today. Some Muslims have been confused and disappointed by this anti terrorist campaign, but thank God, they separated the true Muslims from the hypocrites . . . (America) captured strategic points and put its armies in the sacred places of the Muslims . . .by creating pretexts and conspiracies, as America was afraid of the success of Muslims in the world," (Author, Unknown). Although the source and authenticity of the pamphlet are unknown, it does appear to reflect the views of 'true Muslims'. Judging by this letter they hold serious contempt for America. They spread this hate by polarizing the two parties with the words 'good' and 'evil'. The Muslim community being the previous and America being the latter. These prejudices create ... • 33. The Campaign Year 1988 : George Bush And One From Michael... For this assignment, I chose the campaign year 1988 to compare and contrast two advertisements, one from George Bush and one from Michael Dukakis. The advertisement I chose to view for George Bush was entitled "Family/Children" and the advertisement I chose to view for Michael Dukakis was entitled "New Era." 1) Republican, George Bush: In George Bush's "Family/Children" advertisement, the main focus was George Bush as an American family man who has met every challenge in his past, and he is proud to be an American. Because of this focus, I would categorize this advertisement as biographical. Democrat, Michael Dukakis In Michael Dukakis's "New Era" advertisement, the focus was on Dukakis's many achievements: creating jobs, lowering debt, and cutting taxes. This ad inferred that Dukakis would be qualified to bring America into the next era of economic greatness. Due to the focus of this advertisement, I believe the category that best fits is issue–oriented. 2) Republican, George Bush: In George Bush's campaign advertisement, two people were talking about George Bush: Barbara Bush and a male narrator. The first speaker, Barbara Bush spoke highly of George Bush through a sincere tone as she described how she wished people saw him as she sees him. The next speaker was a male narrator who also spoke highly of George Bush in a reverent tone as he explained that George Bush met every challenge given to him by his country. The tones each speaker used, reaffirmed the message ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 34. Essay Campaign Fundraising: Democracy for Sale There is one sure fire way to know that the political campaign season has started in the United States, and it simply involves turning on a television. There is no need to turn to change the channel to one of the news networks. Watch the advertisements and eventually words like "liar", "cheater" and "thief" will blare from the television as a political attack advertisement airs. These attack advertisements, better known as political attack ads, have become a staple in American politics and a nuisance for the majority of citizens. A survey I did showed when a political attack ad aired 82% of people tuned out the ad; 10% muted their televisions; and the remaining 8% turned off their televisions (Kang). So why do Americans have to endure the ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... FECA put limitations on campaign advertising by political candidates. Lastly FECA created the Federal Election Commission to oversee and regulate campaign financing (The FEC). With all the restrictions placed on direct campaign contributions to political candidates, this type of contribution is known as "hard money". One would assume this would make political campaign fundraising a difficult task, but in the 2008 presidential campaign one billion dollars was raised by candidates (Banking). Cleary "hard money" cannot be the only thing bankrolling our politicians. This is where "soft money" plays a role, it is the loophole used by politicians to remove the cap on their fundraising (Gill). "Soft money" is a donation made to National Party Committees rather than a political candidate. This money cannot be directly used to promote candidates, but it can be used to promote a political party's interests. This means that a political party cannot run a campaign advertisement that directly ask viewers to vote for the party's candidate, but they can run advertisements that include the candidate promoting the party. There is also no limitations on how "soft money" can be used to portray candidates of other political parties, meaning that it can be freely used to finance political attack ads. The biggest issue with "soft money' is that Federal Election Commission does not ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 38. Essay about College Education is the Best Investment The Value of a College Education Why is it important to achieve a college degree, certificate or diploma? Generally speaking, what is the importance of having a college education? This is a question that I have been debating and fighting with myself for the past five years. Is it because with a college education a person can get a better job, earn more money and ensure himself of a better life? Or is the whole concept of college a fraud and a scam to manipulate individuals in feeling inferior without it? In this paper, I am going to enlighten you of the pros and cons of having a valid college education and what it means to me. Senator John Kerry said in a 2004 presidential debate that "Our college students represent only 20 percent ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... I believe that college graduates are also the ones whose children are inspired to earn a valid education. College graduates generally have better jobs, earn more money than their average peers which simply results in them enjoying a better quality of life. On the negative or less optimistic side, it seems to be universally accepted that college education is a good thing; however, thousands of colleges and millions of students spend vast amounts of time and money chasing some sort of degree, diploma or certificate. But what is the value of these qualifications? Most college students (me included) gets brainwashed or sidetracked by administrators of education. They make it seems as though having a college education is the only way doors will open for students. Certificates, diplomas, and degrees are held up as a status symbol and the key to money, power and success. However, the truly powerful are not those with degrees, but people who stand back and look at what is really important in life. These people are found in every part of society. Take my present boss for instance, Carol Levine. Carol never attended college; she actually was a high school drop out who eventually went on to receiving her GED. Today she is the general manager for a fortune 500 company which is also one of Florida's number one title insurance ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 40. Presidential Campaign Of President Obama Political campaigns can elevate a candidate's position, or a poorly run campaign can doom that candidate's chances no matter how good the candidate is. At the end of the day all that matters is winning. That is the goal of political campaigns in a nutshell. There have been many tactics implemented when trying to run a campaign. Of the tactics implemented there are those that are believed to work better than others. Of those that work better than others are, mobilizing base voters by properly identifying who they are, having a clear message and spreading that message to voters, debate performances and fundraising efforts. In this paper the 2008 presidential campaign of current president Barack Obama will be measured along with the 2004 presidential campaign of John F. Kerry. In this paper both campaigns will be analyzed on what tactics they used properly, where they were not as effective and what could have been differently. One of the most important factors when trying to run a successful political campaign is properly identifying and mobilizing base voters. According to the readings in the book Presidential Elections: Strategies and Structures of American Politics, it gives reasons why people do and do not vote. One of the reasons people do vote is because voting in some way or another makes the voter "feel good." However when a campaign properly identifies their base voters, they can pretty much assume that those voters are going to go out and vote, but more importantly ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
