2. How it was presented?
■ The story was presented through different traditional and digital news outlets in
order to appeal to different audiences and at times get across a different purpose.
■ These include The Sun, The Guardian and The Independent newspapers. The story
was also distributed through social media and tv news. This allowed the news to
be presented through traditional methods as physical newspapers, but also online
their dedicated newspaper websites. This has developed over the years using
technology which allows more exposure to the story as more people will be able to
access it. TV news is also useful to how the story was shown as news shows will
tend to read the latest news every hour.
■ Social media is beneficial into how the story was presented as you are able to
receive daily updates on platforms such as Twitter and BBC News app. Digital
methods are important for a younger audience as they are more likely to read the
news whilst it is typically more likely that the older audience will read the
newspaper or listen to the radio. Digital news is instantly accessible and therefore
comes with many other advantages.
3. The Guardian
The Guardian website front cover from the digital version shows the
scene of the incident to create the scene of the article. The use of images
for this article is minimal compared to other news sites demonstrating a
more text based story. The title of the story for this newspaper describes
the incident as the mental health incident where he remained in hospital
and on bail, this is interesting as this headline is different to the other
platforms. This could be to appeal to a more cultured, empathetic
audience. The format that this article is written in is very simple as it
shows the story in small paragraphs giving it an easier understanding. The
article that was written by the guardian is trying to make you believe that
the cause of the attack was due to mental health problems. Although The
Guardian newspaper is labour party there is nothing within the article
that influences a one sided article or language used. A benefit of using
this platform to prevent the story was that the readers were able to see a
factual statement about what happened. There is the option for people to
respond via the website to produce user generated content, however it is
important to be mindful of moderators online. As mentioned before this is
more of a Labour stance which interestingly doesn’t believe in the royal
family as much as Conservative do, however as the readers of The
Guardian are supposedly more liberal it is written in a way that shocks
the audience for the safety of the Queen.
4. The Sun
The Sun has presented it’s digital article about the incident in a different
way compared to The Guardian. The first thing that strikes out in this
article is that the context of the title doesn’t mention the mans mental
health as well as presenting a video to watch. Further down to this there
is less text presented within the article as they use images to show what
happened with small captions. In The Sun’s article the writer is trying to
make the audience believe that the incident was related to the
coronation. They also mention the fact of witnesses telling them what
happened which shows that the newspaper were getting views from
different sides. As The Sun newspaper is conservative there is a lot of
mention towards the coronation as well have bias in favour of the royal
family. The benefit of this style of newspaper is the format is more simple
to read with a visual look. As the language is less advanced it will allow a
younger target audience to understand the story. Social media would be
used to share this story by distributing it on their website, social media
platforms and Snapchat.
5. ■ It is worth mentioning that these
newspapers are owned by different
companies.
■ The Daily express - Reach PLC
■ The Daily Mail –The General Trust
The Daily mail makes you believe that we as
readers should be scared due to the use of the
word shotgun. Interestingly there is no use of
image within this particular front cover as it is
trying to get across the seriousness of the story.
It has told the story slightly differently, focusing
on the weapon rather than the safety of people.
The Daily express makes you believe that it’s
also very serious and uses language like
‘lockdown’ which is quite triggering to people
following COVID 19. The story makes you believe
that everyone is at danger at the palace using
this language and although key information has
been shared across all the different outlets I’ve
looked at, this does use very different language
to scare the reader.
6. BBC News
BBC News used there online platform to report on the
incident. Within the article the BBC have included videos
from the incident whilst also writing a report regarding
what happened. In the article it was also said that the
reporter was at the scene when the incident happened.
This shows that the reporter was able to give a view
about what happened, giving her own opinion. BBC News
also posted a video reporting from the scene whilst also
getting the views from those such as The Royal Regiment
Of Fusiliers. The article are also making the readers
believe that the attack was not terror related. Although
BBC News favour the conservative party and are 75%
funded by the government there is no evidence within
the article that suggests that there is any bias. The
benefit of using BBC News as the platform to show the
news is due to the fact it is a worldwide broadcaster that
will intrigue more people into seeing the news.
7. The radio and tv
■ An advantage of using traditional media is that an older target
audience are more likely to use this. Elderly people are more likely
to listen to the radio and read newspapers as they find it easier to
use than digital such as phones. Having different ways to present
news ensures that everyone is able to receive the latest news. An
example of this is LBC News. This radio station primarily discusses
the latest topics with the latest news. These also include different
views from politicians. This type of news is useful as it runs
throughout the day meaning those can listen on the way to or back
from work. This will also mean there is an influence from various
political parties due to those having different views. Tv is another
benefit as it provides insightful news using mainly images and videos
from the incident. Some people may prefer this rather than reading
paragraphs of text. However TV will have less bias as they will be
using the facts and figures rather than an opinionated view. The
benefit of using this as a platform is that they will have a story and
reporter at the incident as soon as the news breaks in order to get as
much information. Using digital platforms will also focus more on the
younger target audience
8. Social media (twitter)
An advantage of using social media as a platform for news is that they will
be able to gain a mass audience which increases the exposure of the
story. Providers such as ITV news will use twitter to inform a different
type of audience about the news. They capture the attention of the
audience by using a short headline with a picture of breaking news whilst
adding the link to the article. This will increase the interactions of the
tweets as more people will be likely to comment about the situation and
share it with others. People also most likely retweet the tweet which
there followers will be able to see and read the tweet. Furthermore
people will likely comment there opinions and views on the situation
which will encourage others to start a discussion. Having more
interactions will increase the growth of the news story and get more
people involved. Interestingly, they use a similar heading to that of some
print and online media news outlets to show the consistency in the story.
9. Conclusion
In conclusion the stories have been told in different ways through the platforms. A example of this is The Sun used a
more visual look and less text to entice a younger audience into reading the article however LBC use a British radio
station to share their views and telling the story in a way that relates to there opinion rather than using information
from the news story. All the platforms will include key information about the events of the incident that will be used
to educate the preferred target audience for the platforms. Overall from this it shows that the story was able to reach
exposure through both digital and traditional platforms which allows the audience to pick there choice. The benefits
of using radio and social media to promote the story is that individuals will be able to comment there thoughts about
why it happened and how it could be prevented.
Some platforms don’t use imagery, but this is quite rare. As people want to be entertained by pictures and videos
rather than reading content it helps to encourage loyal readership and higher circulation if audiences are presented
with media to support the articles.
On the whole, political parties do not influence the story as this is about people/mental health/The Royals rather than
something political.
The story is ultimately shared the same way, but different spins are focused on. Some platforms and outlets focus on
the weaponry, others focus on the safety and others focus on the mental wellbeing of the man.
