located at the end of Knight street on the highest place of Greek
medieval town of Rhodes on the island of Rhodes.
• The Palace is the castle from 14th century which stands on the
place of Byzantine fortress from 7th century originally built as
Byzantine citadel on basement of the Temple of God of Sun /
Helios /
• It is square building designed around big courtyard with
impressive towers, massive walls and sophisticated decorative
elements and it is one from few examples of Gothic architecture
in Greece .
4. • After the Knights Hospitaller occupied Rhodes and
some other Greek islands (such as Kalymnos and
Kastellorizo) in 1309, they converted the fortress into
their administrative centre and the palace of their
Grand Master.
• The Palace was damaged with eartquake in 1481 and
it was rebuilt again.
5. • After the occupation of the island in 1522 by the
Ottoman Empire, the palace was used as a
command center and fortress. It was also used
as a jail.
• The lower part of the palace was seriously
damaged by the explosion of munition in 1856.
As a result, many rooms on the first floor were
destroyed.
• Between 1937 and 1940, the Italian architect
Vittorio Mesturino rebuilt it to become a
holiday residence for King Victor Emmanuel III,
and later for the dictator Benito Mussolini.
6. • In 50´s of 20th century Rhodes was united with Greece.
• The Palace in that time became the museum.
• Inside there is more than 150 rooms from which only
24 are open for visitors.
• Many of these rooms have exhibitions that show the
history of Rhodes, as well as a rich collection of 16th
and 17th century jewellery, handicrafts, weapons, books
and paintings.
7. • The floors are decorated with mosaics of late
Hellenistic, Roman and early Christian days
dug in the island of Kos.
• One of the most famous is the Medusa of the
2nd Century BC.
