2. The first Omsk fortress was founded in 1716 by Cossack detachment under the
command of D. Buchholz who went to expand and strengthen borders of the
Russian Empire by the order of Peter I. Omsk was a border fortress and until
1797 it was also a prison. Then in 1768 a new, the second, fortress was built.
One of the most famous Russian writers F. M. Dostoyevsky served his sentence
here.
Nowadays after the repairing work the fortress has become an open air
museum.
