An island with a great history, on which we will
reffer to completely briefly. The History of Corfu
and the events which have taken place on it,
have contributed to the present picture of the
island and the way of thinking of its hospitable
inhabitants.
Many have passed through this beautiful,
evergreen island and even more were those who
because of its favourable geographical position
and its natural beauty have desired to conquer it.
From the mythical Phaeceans, according to
Homer, up to the Corinthians, Illyrians, Vandals,
Goths, Romans, Normans, Venetians, French,
English and Russians.
Corfu was considered a centre of shipping,
commerse and culture. Archaeological findings
being discovered periodically prove the history of
the island. According to findings in a cave of the
village Saint Matthew, next to the Byzantine
fortress of Gardiki, it was proved that the island
has been populated from the Paleolithic era.
Many are the historical monuments saved up to
today, making Corfu a pole of attraction for
archaeologists and lovers of antiquity.
The names that the island has taken through
time are not few: Makris, Sheria, Coryfo, island
of the Phaeceans, Drepani....
