How do we analyse film
1. How do we analyse Film?
Genre is a French word meaning ‘type’. Film genres have been present since the beginning of
cinema. It has a far longer general history which ages back to Ancient Greece, at which time
Aristotle grouped theatre plays by type. Presently most cultural production, either television,
magazines, music, painting or literature, ends up being held responsible for one genre or
another. In all cases what makes a genre possible is the reality of common elements or
conventions through a variety of productions. In other words, it is the recognition of repetition
through a series of productions that results in them being represented as a certain type.
