4. WHAT IS HOUSEKEEPING?
• Housekeeping is the part of an organization
which deals with keeping the rooms clean,
comfortable and properly equipped for the
guest in a hotel.
• Housekeeping establishes a hotel’s
reputation for cleanliness and quality. It is
“The Backbone of a hotel”.

5. Housekeeping plays a very important role in hospitality
industry such as:-
To achieve the maximum possible efficiency in ensuring the
care and comfort of guests and in the smooth running of the
department.
To ensure a high standards of cleanliness and general upkeep
in all areas for which the department is responsible.
To ensure that safety and security regulations are made known
to all staff of the department.
To deal with lost and found articles.
IMPORTANCE and ROLE
7. GUEST ROOMS : This section of
housekeeping looks after the cleanliness,
maintenance and aesthetic upkeep of the
room.
PUBLIC AREAS : This section of
housekeeping maintains clean public area
like lobbies, swimming pool, restaurants
etc.
CONTROL DESK : The housekeeping control
desk is the central hub or the nerve center
of the housekeeping department.
LINEN ROOM : Guests room contribute to
more than 50% of the total hotel sales and
more than 60%-70%of net profit.
8. UNIFORM ROOM : Hotel staff must
always be well groomed and smartly
dressed as they are ambassadors of
the hotel and must be at their best
at all times.
LAUNDARY : Staff are the brand
ambassadors of the hotel. When a
guests sees smart looking brand
ambassadors, they feel reassured
that the hotel will take care of their
needs.
HORTICULTURE : This section of
housekeeping takes care of the
landscaping, indoor plants and
flower arrangements.
9. CO-ORDINATION WITH
OTHER DEPARTMENT
Food and beverage service : The food and beverages
department consists of the both the service staff as well as
the kitchen staff. the co-ordination of housekeeping with
restaurants and banquets halls is mainly.
Front office : Rooms are of chief concern to the front office
and housekeeping department. it is important for the
department to continuously exchange information on room
status.
Security Department : The co-ordination here is mainly
concerned with the prevention of fire and thefts and the
safekeeping of keys and lost property. there are so many
security hazards on the floor that this is important.
10. KITCHEN : Housekeeping supplies day to day fresh inform,
dusters to the kitchen people and ensure through pest control
inside the kitchen.
MAINTENANCE DEPARTMENT : One of the most important
functions of housekeeping department is to maintain the hotel
or the purpose of keeping the furniture in working order for
the safe of the guest. Hence a proper co-relation is necessary
with the engineering department.
Stores : Co- ordination with stores ensures the availability of
day of day-to day necessities of housekeeping. larger hotels
have a store attached to the housekeeping department stocks
linen. Supplies and so on.
Purchase : the purchase department procures out of stock
item for housekeeping such as guest supplies and amenities
,stationery, linen, cleaning materials and equipment ,and so
on.

the backbone of the hotel. It establishes a hotel’s
reputation for cleanliness and quality. The major
part of revenue comes from rooms. So it is
important to have a proper housekeeping.
Also to run a hotel there must be a good co-
ordination between housekeeping and other
departments.
