PR Enema

1. PER RECTAL ENEMA

2. Indications
• Evacuation of bowels
• Administration of per rectal medications

3. Contraindications
• Colonic Surgery or patients with obstructions due to risk of
perforations
• Increased risk in patients who has undergone gynecological surgery or
Radiotherapy
• Paralytic ileus

4. Equipments required
• Gloves
• Gauze pads
• Lubricants
• Bedpan
• Enema Solution

5. Procedure
• Explain the procedure and obtain verbal consent of the patient
• Warm the enema solution to the body temperature (heat stimulates
rectal mucosa)
• Ask patient to empty the bladder before procedure
• Ensure patient's privacy

6. Procedure
• Position the patient
• Place machintosh sheet underneath
• Perform DRE
• Lubricate the nozzle of the enema bottle
• Expel air from the bottle
• Gently separate the buttocks, and insert
into the Anal opening, into the rectum.
• Gently expel the contents into the rectum and withdraw the
container.
