1. Evaluation Question 1
In what ways does your media product challenge,
develop or use conventions of real media products.
Stereotypical Protagonist and Antagonist
Throughout my media product the protagonist is conveyed in a
certain stereotypical light, however this has also been challenged
with the possibility that the protagonist could be either characters as
it is still uncertain how the male character is taken.
Similar to 'Along Came a Spider' the antagonist is the female but
this is dormant until the end of the film. With this, the film
withholds mystery and creates an enigma for the audience which is a
typical convention of a real media product.
2. In what ways does your media
product challenge, develop or use
conventions of real media
products.Midway Narrative
Within my product, me and my partner
decided to enter the narrative half way
through, adding an intense feeling of
mystery and to conduct questions within
our audience. Alike this a real media
product example is the film 'Limitless' as
it again has a midway narrative.
Limitless was our inspiration for this
technique as it created a strong and
powerful enigma and instantly intrigued
the viewer.
3. In what ways does your media
product challenge, develop or use
conventions of real media
products.Soundtrack:
For the soundtrack, alike the majority of films in the
thriller genre we wanted to create a climax; we did
this by adding momentary silence, intriguing our
audience. This is common convention of real media
products. For instance, Limitless and The prestige
both use a very well thought out soundtrack which
is very tense and creates an obvious climax. In my
media product the soundtrack is piano based
however we combined the simple piano sound with
a metallic and tense track. This allowed us to
intrigue the audience and allows elements of shock
and suspense; very similar to real media products.
4. In what ways does your media
product challenge, develop or use
conventions of real media
products.Fast Paced Editing
With every thriller film fast paced editing is
key as it causes confusion and tension
among so many other things, so with
my product this was a critical aspect.
With the editing, we sped it up as the
tension rose, which fitted in with the
plot and the soundtrack. Through doing
research, a film with very successful
editing was se7en, which, in its varied
amounts of close up shots and sketchy
effects, caused the perfect amount of
tension and suspense. With this, it
gave me ideas about sound effects and
shots which I have tried to apply to my
product whilst still trying to make it fit in
with the plot and pace.
5. In what ways does your media
product challenge, develop or use
conventions of real media
products.
Idents:
With every film product, idents are used
to signal to the audience the genre and
add a starting tense or creepy aspect to
the film, so for my product, getting key
ideas to fit in with the aspect was
important. This is alike Warner Bros
pictures, and although this mainly
focuses on family or PG films, has still
released Thriller films and has adapted
its ident to this particular role:
So, for my ident, firstly 'twisted
Animations' which fits with the plot as
the story is unclear and cruel, and 'they
watch you productions' which, again fits
as the boy is taken and the variation of
shots show people watching, all of this
sending an idea of secrets and mystery
to the auidience which is a key theme in
my product.
6. In what ways does your media
product challenge, develop or use
conventions of real media
products. Voiceover:
Like 'Limitless' and other popular
thriller films, a voice-over was
added to my product to strike
questions with the audience and
create key enigmas that I needed to
make my product a thriller. This
was also critical for the halfway
narrative so that the audience were
confused in an intriguing manner
but not completely lost. As the voice
over starts, it contrasts greatly with
the romantic birthday scene and the
'you think ive killed him, dont you?'
which instantly causes a confused
reaction which I aimedfor. And, with
the voice over beginning at a black
screen it engages the audience in
the same way that the titles and
voice overs in 'limitless' does,
creating a better and more
structural plot.
